By 1984, films like “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars” (1977) “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T.” (1982) had firmly established the summer blockbuster craze, with Steven Spielberg productions leading the way. On June 8, 1984, two films were released simultaneously that continued the summer blockbuster trend, while also establishing new trends with their combination of horror/comedy and fresh marketing and merchandising strategies. Unsurprisingly, one film was produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and his “Gremlins” battled for the number one box office spot with familiar faces from “Saturday Night Live” who were now “Ghostbusters.” Their quotable scripts and at-the-time unique blend of humor and gore have had long-lasting effects on the film industry and on pop culture that continue to resonate four decades later. Read on for more about the 40-year anniversary of both “Gremlins” and “Ghostbusters.”

In 1997, Platinum Studios co-founder and chairman Scott Mitchell Rosenberg came up with a unique genre-mash concept. What if classic Western tropes were infused with a gritty alien invasion storyline?
This idea birthed the graphic novel "Cowboys & Aliens," where gunslingers Zeke Jackson and Verity Jones witness the crash-landing of an alien spaceship during a caravan ambush. The aliens that disembark the ship are not the friendly, benevolent type -- this is a race bent on invading and conquering Earth by destroying everything they set their sights on. Now, it is up to the cowboys to work together with the local natives to defeat the aliens at all costs, even if it means adapting to their superior, futuristic weapons to nudge the odds in their favor.
Although the one-sheet for Rosenberg's graphic novel was always geared toward a big-budget film adaptation, it wasn't until 2011 that the Jon Favreau-helmed "Cowboys & Aliens" was released,...

Tom Hanks and filmmaker Steven Spielberg attended a special ceremony in Normandy at the American Cemetery above Omaha Beach to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
The Saving Private Ryan star appeared emotional as he watched American D-Day Veterans receive France’s highest honor, the Légion d’Honneur, from President Emmanuel Macron.
“When I look around here today, I see boys in high school, early in college, doing the right thing,” Hanks told NBC News upon arrival at the event.
The day marked the massive military operation in which 156,000 men, 7,000 ships and 10,000 vehicles attacked German forces in Normandy on June 6, 1944.
Spielberg and Hanks collaborated on Saving Private Ryan in 1998. The film told the story of the invasion of Normandy and won Spielberg an Academy Award for Best Director.

Olivia Cooke saw herself become a household name after her success with Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, and the adaptation of Ernest Cline’s groundbreaking love-letter to 80’s pop culture. Since the mid-80s, the PG rating has been mostly exclusive to films aimed at kids, and even though there have been releases that pushed its boundaries, they’re few and far between. However, for a long time, this wasn’t the case, as before the PG-13 rating was introduced, films were either rated PG or R, with the latter only being reserved for extreme cases, such as Evil Dead.
This flawed system would finally undergo a massive change, thanks to Steven Spielberg and his blockbusters, especially Gremlins, which too earned a PG rating upon its release. But had the creators stuck to the initial draft of Chris Columbus, the horror would’ve definitely been given the same treatment as that of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead.

Jude Law has been teasing audiences for decades now. His looks, charm, tenacity, and willingness to channel that success in interesting, unexpected directions have always been admirable. But one of his riskier pivots — perhaps only in retrospect — was David O. Russell’s 2004 ensemble black comedy, “I Heart Huckabees.” Co-starring Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, and many others, the film follows a group of interconnected lives all being investigated by “existential detectives.” Law had admired Russell and, unlike some of Russell’s past players, continues a relationship with the auteur to this day, but knows the film and the process of making it can be viewed with a negative light.
“The experience of making that film was bizarre,” said Law in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “We were all there doing it for nothing, just loving being in each other’s company and playing. I remember fantasizing,...

Taking cinema screens by storm, the sci-fi action genre has become a staple cash cow for Hollywood. However, on the other end of the coin, filmmakers with a vision have managed to turn it from a cash cow into some of the most astounding pieces of art ever. The likes of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, and Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One stand out as some of the most popular and acclaimed outings in recent times.

Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.
Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.
Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. The biggest sitcom stars of the 1970s roughly in Hanks' age range were getting star vehicle...

Steven Spielberg’s works speak for themselves. Over the years, he has been labeled as one of the most respected directors of all time, and his pure talent can be credited for this. However, even the mightiest have their bad days, and the director has certainly released some films that did not work. One of the best examples of such a film would be his 1991 film, Hook.
Steven Spielberg’s Hook I Sony Pictures
A lot was going on during the production of the movie. The film famously had some very difficult times when it came to its cast, budget, and the director himself. Amid this, Spielberg and Julia Roberts seemed to have some serious bad blood. The actress was going through a serious breakup, and there were a lot of eyes on the film. This made her performance quite a tedious one for the director.

George Lucas is often hailed as the founder of perhaps two of the most treasured franchises – Star Wars and Indiana Jones – in the realm of classics.
But while he may have birthed the globally astronomical Star Wars saga, Steven Spielberg was the one to alter the trajectory of the space opera film series with a single hire, albeit inadvertently so.

Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois had been a formative album for director and choreographer Justin Peck, and so when it came to reinterpreting it for the stage, Peck felt a responsibility to do right by the other longtime fans.
After initially toying around with the format of the piece, Peck, who is resident choreographer of the New York City Ballet, turned to a dance-based show, without any dialogue. Instead, the narrative plays out through movement and songs from the album, performed by three vocalists and a band. The idea was to give fans something new to explore, via a new storyline, while tapping into their own experience with the album.

Despite a copious amount of violence, multiple deaths, and slimy, goopy scenes wherein little monsters get blended, torched, melted, and otherwise horribly mutilated, Joe Dante's Frank Capra spoof "Gremlins" was released on June 8, 1984, with a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Producer Steven Spielberg recognized that "Gremlins," in being so tonally whimsical, wasn't quite raw enough to warrant an R-rating, yet also realized that it might be a little too terrifying for the kids who were allowed to see PG-rated movies. Spielberg suggested to the MPAA that it introduce a PG-13 rating to cover films like "Gremlins." It should also be noted that, in 1984, a PG rating was similarly given to Spielberg's violent adventure film "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," so it was high time a stop-gap be included.
The PG-13 rating was introduced on July 1, less than a month after "Gremlins" opened. Weirdly,...

Deadline reports that Kristen Stewart will make her small-screen debut with The Challenger, a limited series following Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space.
The Challenger is based on The New Guys, written by Meredith E. Bagby, and comes from Kyra Sedgwick’s Big Swing Productions, which set it up at Steven Spielberg’s Amblin. Sally Ride was part of the first class of NASA astronauts to include women. After completing her training, she flew aboard the space shuttle Challenger on several missions, becoming the first American woman to fly in space. When the Challenger exploded in 1986, she became part of the Rogers Commission, which investigated the reason behind the explosion. It was later revealed that she had provided key information about the O-rings, which were later determined to be the cause.

Joe Dante's "Gremlins" is a one-of-a-kind blockbuster from an era when studios hadn't quite yet developed the formula for producing hit movies. In the early 1980s, executives under pressure to find projects capable of breaking the coveted $100 million domestic mark relied heavily on movie stars or bestselling books, but to strike gold you needed vision. That meant finding a visionary.
There were two 30-something film brats who fit this profile during that period: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. And since Lucas was, at the moment, a two-franchise man with "Star Wars" and the just-taking-off Indiana Jones series, Spielberg, who'd just set up his production company Amblin Entertainment at Universal Pictures, was the closest thing to a Walt Disney alive and unfrozen in Hollywood.
After scoring a one-two box-office knockout in 1982 with "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Poltergeist," Spielberg was eager to expand his burgeoning showbiz empire. For his first official,...

The sky must have been the limit for a young Harrison Ford sailing through Hollywood during the peak of his fame and popularity. But unlike the immortality of his legendary on-screen characters, the actor was very much bound to become a victim of his advancing age, and slowly recede into the backgrounds in favor of newer, fresher, and younger talents.

Creativity runs through the blood of artists like the Star Wars veteran and just like Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, he refuses to give up on working until he can no longer do so.

Steven Spielberg has delivered some impeccable Hollywood projects that continue to serve as a great inspiration for filmmakers. However, many often forget that the director himself was a newbie once upon a time, just like any other in the industry. Despite facing challenges, he created a masterpiece like Jaws (his second feature film), which was a complete nightmare to shoot.

The Matrix. Risky Business. Memento. Midnight Run. Bound. Four Bad Boys movies. Joe Pantoliano (or Joey Pants – as everyone calls him) is one of the most successful and iconic character actors of our time – and that’s just from his movies! Let’s also not forget that the man played perhaps the most vicious Sopranos character of all time (the dreaded Ralph Cifaretto on twenty-one episodes). Indeed, Joey Pants has had a career like no other. I gotta say, it was truly an honour to chat with the man on Zoom in honour of this return in Bad Boys: For Life, with his character, Captain Conrad Howard, so popular that it looks like Will Smith himself pushed for him to return despite having been killed off in the last movie.

Mark Andrews, director of Pixar’s Academy Award winning animated feature “Brave” and a writer on Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Primal” and “Samurai Jack,” is attached as the showrunner of animated series “Kyōryū,” about samurai dinosaurs living in a postapocalyptic Japan.
In development at Wellington, New Zealand-based Floating Rock, an animation and VFX studio, “Kyōryū” is set in Japan in a future where dinosaurs have outlasted humanity. Genetically engineered, they are far more intelligent than their pre-historic ancestors. That said, atavistic instincts can flare, making for tribal wars.
Unveiled last September, the “Kyōryū” proof-of-concept trailer went viral, with 1 million views in its first 10 days of release, now 2.1 million views to date on YouTube, and an estimated reach of over a million.
The trailer also attracted Andrews. “‘Dinosaurs in postapocalyptic Japan?’ I want to see that show without even knowing what the story’s about! We’re going to give the audience...

Folk horror aims for the darkest parts of our imaginations. The creatures that dwell out of sight can frighten and speak to larger cultural concerns. Tom Hanks was fated to lead Penny Marshall’s comedy feature that made history more than three decades ago. But, as it turns out, two rather exceptional actors reportedly passed down the film that was well on its way to becoming a box-office sensation.

Can you imagine a film where the Tardis doors swung open to reveal Tom Cruise, with Pamela Anderson potentially at his side, all under the visionary direction of Steven Spielberg?
Well, few Hollywood ‘what-ifs’ are as intriguing as the renowned director’s involvement with Doctor Who, with reports of megastars and massive cinematic overhauls being considered. Spielberg has mostly picked his own projects, reading books to adapt, finding real-life tales to dramatize, and then working with writers to develop screenplays. So, when rumors of his involvement in the Doctor Who film surfaced in the early 1990s, Whovians went into a frenzy, latching onto any hint of this project.

In 1980s Poland, Tadeusz Baranowski’s comic books stood out by a mile, full of color, absurd humor, and odd characters. Now, director Wojtek Wawszczyk is referencing them in his hybrid CG/live-action animated feature Diplodocus, which screens in this year’s Annecy Presents sidebar at the iconic French festival.
“That’s how I started to draw – I was copying these comics! I discovered them as a 6-year-old. Without them, I wouldn’t be doing this,” he told Variety ahead of the film’s debut.
He first met Baranowski – who has a cameo in the film – as a student. Soon, a friendship was forged.
“I actually approached him back then, 20 years ago, and said I would like to bring his comics to the screen one day. Last December, I showed him and his wife Ania the almost-finished film. They told me the spirit of Baranowski is present in every frame.

(Helen Hunt's character needs to face and survive an F5 tornado to exorcize her childhood demons.)
Actually, there's a world in which this is an awesomely preposterous plot, but "Twister" offers only mechanical blockbuster storytelling. The film –- from...

With 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," Steven Spielberg and George Lucas reimagined the pulp heroes of the 1930s and '40s and introduced the world to their version in the form of Indiana Jones. Five years later, that particular formula found its way to Hong Kong when Jackie Chan co-wrote, directed, and starred in "Armour of God," an adventure flick that allowed him to put his own martial arts-infused spin on the concept.
