- Jim Rittenshaw is happily married to Daisy, or so he thinks. Richard Desborough, Jim's friend from his college days, becomes enamored of Daisy, who leads him on. Desborough lives by the creed "No God. No Sin. No future life." Desborough neglects his own wife and child. His wife Caroline goes to Rittenshaw and tells him what is going on. Rittenshaw then kills Desborough. However, before his spirit can be at rest, Desborough must make right the things he left wronged. He appears in visions to the various characters, even his dog, and one by one they are guided to perform acts that set conditions right. Eventually Flora confesses that she is the reason Desborough was murdered. When Desborough's wife recognizes him, she forgives him, and he is able to depart the earth.
- Paphnutius, a wealthy Alexandrian, is about to embrace the new faith of Christianity, but is persuaded by a friend to first see Thais, the most notable courtesan of her time. He falls in love with her, but is forced to kill a rival and conscience again urges him toward the new faith. He becomes a monk, but leaves the cloister to return to Alexandria to seek to convert Thais. In this he succeeds and she joins a nunnery. He saves her soul but loses his own peace of mind.

In order to break up her son's romance with a supposedly disgraced woman, Mrs. Farwell hires Robert Craig. During a party, Percy announces their engagement, and Helen acts intoxicated to test Robert's feelings for her. When Mrs. Farwell convinces Stella's husband Sidney to accuse Helen of wrongdoing, Robert fights him. Helen then accepts Robert's love and admits she was only drinking ginger ale.
- Abe Potash and Morris Perlmutter, partners in a garment company, hire Boris Andrieff, a poor Russian violinist, as a fitter. Boris falls in love with Irma Potash to the disappointment of Abe, who had hoped for his daughter to marry Feldman, a wealthy lawyer. The violinist is arrested after a labor agitator is shot on the company premises, and the scandal threatens to ruin Potash and Perlmutter. However, the man recovers, and Boris marries Irma with her father's blessing.
- King Philip of Spain is jealous of his more popular brother, Don John, and sends him into battle against the Moors, hoping he will not return. Don John is in love with Dolores, daughter of General Mendoza, but the general discourages her, as Don John is betrothed to the Queen of England's sister. Don John returns victorious, and following a dispute over a secret letter, the king stabs his brother and leaves him for dead. When Mendoza accepts the blame, Dolores, who knows the truth, tells the court she had been dishonored by Don John, causing her father's reaction. Dolores then threatens the king that she will reveal his guilt unless her father is pardoned. The king pardons Mendoza, Don John recovers, and he and Dolores marry.

Pamela surrounds Idalene with luxuries and teaches her to walk gracefully and wear stylish clothes; and soon her blooming charm attracts Breen. At a party Pamela gives in her honor her former critics pay her homage. Idalene refuses Breen's proposal of marriage when she learns that Pamela also loves him; but Pamela suppresses her feelings in favor of Idalene, and the lovers are happily united.

They finally decide to circumvent the New York law by becoming really married in New Jersey, and all ends happily.

Sylvia, introduced as the widow of Captain Milton Brown, falls in love with Don, but her joy turns to panic when her supposedly dead husband suddenly appears. The amused captain allows Sylvia to continue her impersonation for a time but advises her to leave the party. Don, heartbroken, also leaves, but after several adventures in which he helps Sylvia retrieve papers stolen during the party by a German spy, the two lovers are reunited in their true identities, and the play debuts successfully.
- Dorothy Dean, a wealthy young woman with modern ideas, abhors the institution of marriage but discovers that she must be wed in order to receive a wealthy relative's inheritance. Through Judge Roan, the family lawyer, Dorothy meets Don Morton, who agrees to accept a $10,000 check to marry her and then leave her in peace. After the ceremony, however, Dorothy's new husband takes her to a lonely island retreat where he tries unsuccessfully to win her love. Defeated, he leaves the island. In his absence, she is attacked by thieves and is fighting for her life when Don returns and rescues her. Dorothy now realizes that she is happy to have a husband, and the two embark on a real honeymoon.

Seeing Bastling faithlessness makes Muriel realize that Quex is the man for her.

He follows her home to Morevana, and once it is discovered that he is wealthy, the governor offers the American his prized daughter Papova, only to discover that it is the slim princess whom Pike treasures.
