- A daughter of the South is beloved by two men, one an officer in the Northern Army, the other a Southerner like herself. She returns the love of the latter, and when the Civil War breaks out she says goodbye to him tearfully. A year later Wilbur (the Southerner) offers to go in search of an important dispatch which is believed to ave fallen into the enemy's hands. By accident this man has taken with him Wilbur's Cloak, in the pocket of which is his sweetheart's good-by gift - a miniature of herself. Wilbur finds the dispatch carrier dead by the roadside. Neither dispatch nor miniature are in the cloak, and he rides on. He is seen by Northerners, who pursue him. He escapes. and the pursuers give up the chase. The Northern soldiers are under the command of Lieutenant Harrison, the man in love with Wilbur's sweetheart. Into his possession fall the miniature and the dispatch, and believing Wilbur to be dead, he rides to Helen's house to break the news to her. She weeps bitterly, he and he is endeavouring to comfort her when a man bursts through the window. It is Wilbur, who has come to his sweetheart's home as a safe refuge. Harrison is inclined to take him prisoner, but Helen's pleadings cause him to change his mind. His men have caught a glimpse of the fugitive, and there is a knock at the door of the little parlour. They have come to take their prisoner. Harrison fires a pistol into the ceiling and, stepping out into the corridor, her tells his men that he has shot the Southerner. They retire, and when the coast is clear Wilbur hastens away. (Released July 13th. Length 972 ft.)
