“The Regime” showrunner Stephen Frears is a man of few words when it comes to music — at least according to award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat. But that wasn’t a bad thing. The two had previously collaborated, and Desplat liked that approach, as it gave him free reign to come up with compositions that he could bring back to the director.
Recruited for HBO’s “The Regime,” starring Kate Winslet as the chancellor who reigns over an unnamed Central European country, Desplat looked to Winslet’s acting, design and costumes for inspiration. “The music needed to be charged with humor, but not too much,” he says. “There also needed to be an ominous presence. There’s something uncomfortable about these people. They’re almost sad, and they’re crazy and unique, so the music had to show that desperate world.”
He found himself writing music that was layered with “Mitteleuropa sounds.

Back in 1997, Disney’s Hercules became a massive hit, earning a total of $252.7 million on an $85 million budget, which was an exceptional amount of money at the time. It also became a part of history as one of Disney’s most beloved animated features. The original movie featured the voice talents of Tate Donovan (as Hercules), Danny DeVito (as Philoctetes), James Woods (as Hades), and Susan Egan (as Megara), but the House of the Mouse thinks it is time for a remake and so a live-action version is coming along. Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct and while we don’t have any known cast members for you, we have some interesting rumors.
Not so long ago, we reported that Dua Lipa is being eyed to take over the role of Megara, and in this report, we can confirm that a name is being mentioned in association with the role of Hades,...

The series of murder mysteries that began with the 2019 film Knives Out and continued with the 2022 film Glass Onion is set to keep on going with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which has writer/director Rian Johnson back at the helm. Johnson and his collaborators are being very secretive about this project right now, but there’s a lot of hype for it – so we figured this would be a good time to start assembling a list of Everything We Know About Wake Up Dead Man. Here we go:
Title
Johnson got the title Knives Out from a Radiohead song. When it came time to make the sequel Glass Onion, he got the title from a song by The Beatles. So it’s only fitting that the third film in the franchise have a song-inspired title as well. But while Radiohead and The Beatles were from England,...

Jerry Seinfeld opened up about the negative reception of his latest Netflix movie, Unfrosted. Seinfeld shared that he didn’t care about the critical opinion and commented that he wanted to read the negative reviews since he found them to be funny. The film is loosely based on the invention of Pop-Tarts toaster pastries, and Seinfeld played Bob Cabana, a character based on William Post who created them.

It was almost exactly one year ago when we learned that Hugh Grant – whose credits include Notting Hill, Love Actually, Wonka, and Unfrosted – had signed on to star in the A24 horror film Heretic, which is coming our way from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Now Deadline reports that A24 is planning to give Heretic a wide theatrical release on November 15th.
Details are scarce, but the story has something to do with two missionaries that attempt to convert a dangerous man. Here’s how Deadline describes it: Two young missionaries become ensnared in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse after they knock on the wrong front door.
There’s no word on who Grant plays in this scenario, but it would be very cool to see him take on the role of the dangerous man, and it seems likely that we’re going to.

With Wake Up Dead Man castings coming thick and fast, we’ve got a handy guide to who’s not in the Knives Out 3 cast so far.
Since Knives Out 3 was officially announced (and renamed Wake Up Dead Man) last week, the casting news has been flying thick and fast. Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott and Kerry Washington were first out of the bag, with Glenn Close following up close behind.
That’s five whole names! In one week! Far too many, if you ask us. With that in mind, here’s everyone Not cast in the third Knives Out Mystery (so far). Feel free to comment below if we’ve missed anyone.
Daniel Day-Lewis
If there’s one thing that could pull the famously retired actor out of, well, retirement, surely it would be a new Knives Out? We’re not actors, but even we’d bite...

A live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series was in development for Paramount+ and had even been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order by the streaming service, but Deadline now reports that the project is no longer moving forward.
However, the Dungeons & Dragons series isn’t entirely dead, as Hasbro Entertainment will be shopping it to other potential buyers. It’s also said the series will receive a creative update which will be tackled by a new creative team. The version which was sold to Paramount+ was overseen by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper), who wrote the pilot script and was going to direct the first episode. Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) was brought on to serve as executive producer and showrunner last year.
The report states that Hasbro remains committed to the Dungeons & Dragons TV series, meaning that it will likely be a matter of when, not if, the project emerges elsewhere.

Jerry Seinfeld, the legendary comedian, recently teamed up with the charming and versatile actor Hugh Grant, in their new Netflix film Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. Jerry Seinfeld said he is nostalgic for the “agreed-upon hierarchy” of American culture in the 1960s, adding that he misses “dominant masculinity.”
Seinfeld shared the comments on Tuesday’s episode of the Honestly With Bari Weiss podcast, where he said he feels cultural hierarchy has “absolutely vaporized in today’s moment.”
“That is why people lean on the horn and drive in the crazy way that they drive,” he continued. “Because we have no sense of hierarchy. And as humans, we don’t really feel comfortable like that.”
Seinfeld was speaking in connection to his recent Netflix film (and feature-length directorial debut) Unfrosted, which tells the fictionalized origin story of the Pop-Tart and takes place in Michigan in the ’60s. During their conversation, Weiss told the comedian she felt the film represented a nostalgia for “a sense of one conversation, a common culture.”

It all started in 2019 when Lionsgate released Knives Out. At the time, director Rian Johnson was not beloved by many because of his polarizing work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so the movie was sort of an attempt at redemption for the filmmaker. Starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, the film was a whodunnit that featured an ensemble cast, and it was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as Knives Out became one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre.

‘If you see one movie this summer, see Star Wars. If you see a second, see Austin Powers.’ Thus spake trailer-man, in the teaser for Mike Myers’s upcoming comedy sequel, and to a great extent, that’s exactly what happened in the summer of 1999. Well, almost.
The 20th century was running out of time and that summer was impatiently filled with as many tantalising prospects as any big movie season in recent memory. It appeared to be the summer of comebacks. Following Terrence Malick’s long-awaited return to directing in the recently-released The Thin Red Line, Summer ’99 would see not only George Lucas but Stanley Kubrick making their much-delayed encores – though we knew by then that this was actually Kubrick’s swan song.
An exercise in peak-nostalgia seemed inevitable, but the season proved to be full of surprises. None more so than the success of that second Austin Powers film,...

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. Jarvis and his seemingly more secure lead male costar, Hiroyuki Sanada, displaced both Tom Hiddleston (“Loki...

Prince Harry cannot expand his privacy lawsuit against the publisher of U.K. tabloid The Sun to include allegations against media mogul Rupert Murdoch and presenter Piers Morgan, a London judge has ruled.
The Duke of Sussex’s lawyers were hoping to sue over claims that Murdoch and other top executives were part of an effort to conceal and destroy evidence of unlawful information gathering. The prince alleges that he was targeted by journalists and private investigators working for News Group Newspapers (Ngn) titles The Sun and the now-defunct News Of The World, which closed in 2011.
In March, he sought to amend his case to add new allegations, including that The Sun ordered private investigators to target his now-wife Meghan in 2016. He was further refused permission to push the timeline of the case back to 1994 and 1995, to include allegations involving his late mother, Princess Diana, as Judge Timothy Fancourt of...

“We never quite know if his intentions are good or manipulative… that is very appealing to work with because it allows you to keep people guessing,” remarks Matthias Schoenaerts about his starring role on the HBO limited series “The Regime.” The actor plays Corporal Zubak, a man with a violent past who is summoned to work at the palace for the chancellor of a fictional European nation. As he describes, the character is “somebody trying to move from dark to light,” who is “coming out of a very dark place” and “gets the opportunity to really profoundly change his life.” As a result, “He’s not one dimensional.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Created by Will Tracy of “Succession” and other politically-savvy shows, “The Regime” features a unique tone, moving from satire and farce to drama about authoritarianism and state violence. Schoenaerts says the overall style of the show comes from the directing,...

For those who adored Jerry Seinfeld’s iconic sitcom, Unfrosted might come as a peculiar turn. While everyone’s favourite cereal mascot does star, the reception is far from sugary. Some critics label it one of the decade’s worst movies. The Plot and the Peculiarity Unfrosted tells a wacky tale purporting to unveil the birth of Pop-Tarts amid cereal wars between Kellogg’s and Post in the ’60s. Starring Seinfeld as Bob Cabana, a fictional executive, and supported by an ensemble cast including Melissa McCarthy and Hugh Grant, it leverages historical nostalgia for laughs. According to Variety, it is fairly clear that the

Unfrosted might not be fully accurate in its portrayal of the race to create the first toaster pastry, but it does capture an essential truth: The more specific nostalgia is, the more universal its appeal. Which is why Unfrosted’s director, co-writer, and star Jerry Seinfeld’s personal passion for the Pop-Tart can be seen through the lens of a subversive yet somehow sweet look back at the ’60s, a time when kids roamed free (and right into dumpsters) and Shakespearean actors moonlighted as cereal mascots.

The founder of a U.K. charity, to which Hugh Grant is famously a major donor after contributing around 75,000 pounds, has become the subject of an extensive BBC exposé for faking viral stories of kindness to make money.
On Thursday, the BBC released a documentary, Britain’s Hero Plumber Exposed, with an accompanying report accusing Depher founder James Anderson of lying in X posts, using photos of non-consenting beneficiaries and spending company cash on a house and a car.
Anderson has accrued a huge online following in recent years for his social media posts detailing the desperate pleas for help his charity has answered — prompting two million pounds in donations, according to BBC analysis of company accounts and even receiving letters of thanks from the late Queen Elizabeth II and the now-King Charles.

Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont opened up about meeting fantastic people in a callous industry like the film industry during a 2014 interview. He hated that the tabloids painted a bad picture of an actor like Tom Cruise without getting the full picture of how he is in real life. Darabont shared that people should ask his good friend Simon Pegg about the kind of human the Mission: Impossible actor was.

Tom Cruise has made one thing crystal clear when it comes to stunts, he’s practically invincible, and there’s nothing he can’t pull off. Yet, now that he’s seemingly conquered everything there is to be conquered in the stunt world, fans are itching for him to return to some of his villainous roles.
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996)
With a career spanning decades and a resume that includes nearly every stunt imaginable, Cruise’s return to portraying compelling antagonists seems like the most logical next step to his fans. It’s not just fans who are eager for this, even esteemed figures like Scott Derrickson, the director behind Doctor Strange, have recognized the brilliance of Cruise’s past performances in thrillers. Derrickson’s endorsement, labeling one of Cruise’s films as one of the top five thrillers ever made, only adds fuel to the anticipation surrounding Cruise...

Jerry Seinfeld wanted Chris Rock to parody Will Smith slapping him at the 2022 Oscars for his Netflix movie Unfrosted.
While appearing on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s podcast Fly on the Wall this week, Seinfeld said he initially wanted to cast Rock in the role as the host of the Bowl & Spoon Awards, which eventually went to Cedric the Entertainer.
“We shot that right after the Will Smith slap,” Seinfeld said. “I was going to have somebody come up on the stage and have Chris punch ’em out as they got there.”
However, Rock “wasn’t up to perform” the parody of the incident. “He was a little shook from that event,” Seinfeld explained. “That was what that scene was going to be, but Cedric saved the day.”

Days after it was launched, a TV advert for a new iPad has been withdrawn by Apple following an online backlash. “We missed the mark,” the tech giant says. “Sorry.”
Apple evidently hit a nerve when it launched a new TV advert, in which symbols of art, culture and creativity – musical instruments, books, tins of paint, even an arcade cabinet – were crushed in a hydraulic press like Linda Hamilton killing a T-101 endoskeleton.
Mere days after its launch sparked an online backlash, Apple has apologised for the advert, intended to promote a new form of iPad. Tor Myhren, Apple’s VP of marketing, admitted in a statement that the advert “missed the mark” and said that it won’t air on television.
“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” Myhren said in a statement to TheWrap.

Apple has put out some of the most innovative and memorable commercials ever. We think of the iconic 1984 ad and the early iPod spots with silhouetted music lovers dancing to “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” Now, Apple has done the exact opposite of those, inadvertently pushing people away from the product.
Apple CEO Tim Cook posted the ad – titled “Crush” – on X this week, accompanying it with: “Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created, the most advanced display we’ve ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create.” The ad itself features a wealth of human achievements – from music to mathematics – being crushed in a hydraulic press, ultimately creating the new iPad Pro. That it is set to Sonny and Cher’s “All I Ever Need Is You” definitely has meaning.

On July 5, 1989, NBC aired the first episode of Seinfeld, the legendary sitcom that ran for nine years and influenced television comedy and beyond.
The pilot, in which Jerry Seinfeld tried to find out if a girl he knew liked him or not, made a disgusting impression on NBC executives. Somehow the creators of the show managed to get permission to shoot four more episodes (the first season turned out to be very short). At the same time, some of the mistakes were fixed: from the second episode, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known from Saturday Night Live, joined the main cast in the role of Seinfeld's ex. And the rest is history.
Jerry Seinfeld was not particularly eager to return to the screen – over the past 25 years, he has made a few stand-up routines, played himself in sitcoms, and voiced an annoying bee in Bee Movie. So it's surprising that the comedian would...
The pilot, in which Jerry Seinfeld tried to find out if a girl he knew liked him or not, made a disgusting impression on NBC executives. Hugh Grant is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood, and his perfect combination of wit and charm only makes it more understandable why. Needless to say, his very charming personality and physical features are also the reason why a lot of the roles he has donned have been in rom-coms. But even through those rom-coms, Grant has displayed quite a bit of action.

However, one time, this display of action in a similar ruthless manner as Tom Cruise almost ended up killing him. This happened in the iconic film that set him up as the King of rom-coms and is still regarded as a masterpiece, Four Weddings and a Funeral. But that isn’t the only surprising fact, because Grant was actually never the first choice to play the protagonist in that movie!

Jan de Bont’s action thriller Speed is considered to be one of the best in the genre. Moreover, the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves was the equivalent of a cherry on top. The romance is a slow burn as the characters keep the audience waiting for something to happen between the two but it isn’t until the very end that Annie and Jack share a passionate kiss.
Jan de Bont’s Speed (1994).
However, this didn’t mean that there wasn’t a spark between the two as they held on to their dear lives in the speeding bus. They do share a few moments of eye contact here and there and as per Sandra Bullock, this really helped the two to build a connection before their big kiss; something which she hilariously dubbed as “foreplay.”

Poliakoff’s first film starring Charles Dance is reissued, and whil the story rambles and some of the acting isn’t great, it retains a confident power to intrigue
There is great archival and historical interest to the 1987 feature film debut of writer-director Stephen Poliakoff, which now on re-release. It is a peculiar, cerebral and often strangely toothless mystery drama with some pretty wooden acting, but also some fascinating, secret London locations, used with flair. These include the Kingsway tram tunnel – gateway to a veritable catacomb of secret spaces under the city – and the gigantic Edmonton incinerator (now the Edmonton EcoPark). Hidden City offers points of interest in its drama; chiefly, the assertive and characteristically haughty performance from Charles Dance as an educational psychologist who stumbles on an occult conspiracy. Dance incidentally has the most outrageously handbags-at-dawn fight with Bill Paterson (“Mind the suit!”) – an un-macho showdown to be compared...
