Back in May 1986, fans saw Tom Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell for the first time, in Top Gun. The movie, which is an all-time action classic, introduced us to a number of characters destined to become fan-favorites. However, arguably none came as close to immediately taking that mantle, as Val Kilmer’s Lt Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, the Maverick’s biggest rival initially.

Kilmer’s Iceman finishes at the top of his class at the Top Gun Academy and proceeds to become a close ally of Cruise’s character. Being an integral part of the success that the first movie got, Kilmer was still not certain about whether he would be a part of the second movie, which came out decades later, in April 2022.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot points from “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” which hits U.S. theaters on June 7.
At the climax of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” — the fourth installment of the buddy cop blockbuster action-comedy franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence — something surprising happens.
The franchise’s heroes (and the titular “Bad Boys”), Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowery (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence), have spent most of the movie on the run. They begin the action focused on clearing the name of their dearly departed Capt. Howard (Joe Pantoliano), who has been accused of aiding and abetting the cartels, then get framed themselves. It’s all come down to this — one final showdown with the turncoat cops and drug lords that ordered the hit on Howard in the previous film, 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life.”

Actor Glen Powell was propelled to new heights of stardom when he starred as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick. The Tom Cruise-starrer was the highest-grossing film of 2022 and was even nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Powell’s role as an arrogant yet principled Navy pilot received positive responses from fans and critics alike.
Though Powell portrayed Hangman to perfection, that was not the first role he auditioned for. The actor reportedly first hoped to star as Rooster, the role that eventually went to Miles Teller. However, after being rejected from the role and not being impressed with Hangman on the page, Powell was convinced by Cruise to take the character.

“Freeze mother bitches!” What’s the all-time best buddy cop movie ever made? 48 Hrs? Lethal Weapon? Beverly Hills Cop? Rush Hour? The Nice Guys? In terms of story and dramatic action, any one of these titles warrants serious consideration. But when it comes to the onscreen rapport and natural chemistry between two stars in a buddy cop movie, it’s hard to beat 1995’s Bad Boys – the directorial debut of the divisive filmmaker Michael Bay. Sure, Bay has earned a rightful rep as a bold and boisterous music-video director turned filmmaker who favors big, dumb, pyrotechnic excesses over quality cinematic storytelling.
However, Bay does deserve at least a modicum of credit for pairing the comedic talents of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence together as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett – two immensely likable Miami narcotics officers who trade crackling banter and witty one-liners whose onscreen partnership drives the engagement and entertainment level.

What is the "Bad Boys" franchise, exactly? It's a question worth contemplating, given the unusual history of the series. For one thing, the franchise is nearly 30 years old, and yet the latest entry, "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," is only the fourth film in the series. For another, each film to date has had a radically different identity: the original 1995 "Bad Boys" saw Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and director Michael Bay taking their first steps into feature films together, while 2003's "Bad Boys II" is essentially an insane victory lap, with the trio celebrating their stardom while making what amounts to avant garde art in the guise of a summer action movie.
2020's "Bad Boys for Life" saw Bay hand over the directing reins to the young and hungry directing duo of Adil & Bilall (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah), whose work in their native Belgium (especially 2015's "Black") impressed series producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

As ancient prophecy foretold, the “Fast & Furious”-ification of the “Bad Boys” franchise is made complete with its fourth installment, which builds on the sordid plot twists of 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life”: an undercover affair! A secret cartel love child who murders Joe Pantoliano! DJ Khaled! This trigger-happy soap opera spins a breakneck and broadly entertaining summer blockbuster about the holy trinity of American traditions: family, corruption, and shooting people. This one even ends with a barbecue.
Vin Diesel’s Wagnerian car saga ran out of gas a long time ago, but the story engine that powered it from the streets to the stratosphere has proven a solid fit for this sunbaked nostalgia act, a ’90s-era property straining to stay relevant in a sick, sad world where Deadpool is a bigger draw than Michael Bay, and Will Smith is less famous for his hits than his slaps.

The year was 2022 and the theatres were suffering due to the pandemic the world was in. They found their savior in Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick which made over a billion dollars at the box office. The film stayed in the number one spot for months before being dethroned by Avatar: The Way of Water in December. Regardless, Top Gun: Maverick was the breath of fresh air that theatres and film enthusiasts were in dire need of.

Daisy Ridley, known best for her role as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, had a brand new, critically acclaimed movie in theaters this past weekend. One would be forgiven for not knowing that, though, as Disney didn't launch a huge campaign for the release of "Young Woman and the Sea." Be that as it may, the Mouse House believes they have a winner on their hands, which is why they put the movie in theaters in the first place. But it's not trying to rake in big bucks at the box office, that's for sure. In fact, the studio isn't even reporting box office numbers for the film at all.
Disney is not sharing official figures for "Young Woman and the Sea," which is odd for a company known for its dominance at the box office in the 2010s. Granted, Disney hasn't been nearly as dominant in the pandemic era,...

Following the inspiring true story of American competition swimmer and Olympic athlete Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English channel, “Young Woman and the Sea” aims to offer audiences a more hopeful viewing experience than they’ve been used to lately. Lots of ways to describe how bad it is for theaters. Here’s one: A year ago, the #2 film “The Little Mermaid” grossed $41.4 million; this weekend, the top four films grossed $44.4 million combined.
“The Garfield Movie” (Sony) took over #1 with $14 million and a 10-day total about $2 million better than last week’s #1, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” (Warner Bros.). George Miller’s $160 million-budget prequel dropped 59 percent from a disappointing start and is in a tight battle for #2 with “If” (Paramount). The family fantasy with Ryan Reynolds tentatively stands at $50,000 ahead; to its credit, WB wasn’t aggressive in its estimate. (Tomorrow will tell the actual result).
The good news is that we have touched bottom for the summer, and it will get better from here. Both “Garfield” and “If” had strong holds: “Garfield” dropped 41 percent in its second weekend after a holiday Sunday, and “If” dropped 33 percent and now is at $80 million.

Fortunately, the Anyone but You star was eventually onboard with the role, which led to the actor’s ascend in Hollywood, who is currently one of the biggest bankable young stars on the planet.
However, things might not have been the same if Powell hadn’t instilled some changes in his Top Gun 2 counterpart, which was initially written to be a flat character that served no purpose.

It’s another bummer of a weekend at the summer of box office, where overall domestic revenue looks to be down 69 percent — no, not a typo — from a year ago as Hollywood and theater owners continue to grapple with a lack of big event pics. And year-to-date revenue is now down 24 percent over last year.
For some, there is reason to smile. Alcon and Sony’s The Garfield Movie easily purred past George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to top the weekend chart with an estimated $14 million for a domestic tally of $51.6 million. Alcon fully financed the $60 million film, which crossed the $100 million mark overseas for a global tally of $152.2 million.
Furiosa, costing a pricey $168 million to produce, fell a steep 59 percent to $10.8 million, dashing hopes that it could rebound after a disappointing Memorial Day opening. The dystopian epic is also stalling overseas, where it took in only...

Before she heads back to a galaxy far, far away again, Daisy Ridley is taking to water, with her new film “Young Woman and the Sea.”
Based on the true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, Ridley stars as Ederle, taking viewers on her journey through the water. And, if those shots look particularly stunning to you, it could be because the movie also boasts Jerry Bruckheimer as a producer.
The film marks a bit of a rarity for Disney, as it was meant to go to Disney+ — and eventually will, more on that below — but instead pivoted to a limited theatrical release that could get extended.
Here’s everything you need to know about seeing the film.
What is the release date?
“Young Woman and the Sea” hit select theaters on Friday, May 31.

Young Woman and the Sea allowed Norwegian director Joachim Rønning to return to his roots in more ways than one.
As he was helming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) for Disney, Rønning was in development on a biopic about Olympic swimmer Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926. What would normally seem like a big left turn for a filmmaker who’d been steeped in fantasy worlds was actually a return to the genre of historical drama that first launched his Hollywood career.
In 2013, Rønning and co-director Espen Sanderg’s Norwegian film, Kon-Tiki, received an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film at the 85th Academy Awards. The picture chronicled Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 expedition from South America to the islands of Polynesia, as both Kon-Tiki and Young Woman and the Sea are...

Veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks to us about his latest film, Young Woman And The Sea, and the long process of getting it made.
Some movies descend into the ninth circle of development hell and never return, but Young Woman And The Sea, at least, has a happy ending. Having begun life in 2015 at Paramount Pictures, the project – about real-world swimmer Gertrude Ederle and her 1926 attempt to swim the English Channel – was put into turnaround five years later.
By 2020, the production had lost its original star, Lily James, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly continued to try to get it made, eventually striking a deal with Walt Disney Pictures. There, it was originally intended as fodder for the Mouse House’s Disney+ streaming service, yet the film director Joachim Rønning came back with was so impressive that Disney executives decided to give it a limited cinema release.

Nicolas Cage deserves at least one more installment to his action adventure National Treasure franchise. However, even after 17 years of the release of the second installment, the updates on the movie franchise have been vehemently silent. While most fans want National Treasure to be a trilogy, Cage would need an addition of one more movie to complement that.

National Treasure has been quite a success, but Disney somewhat moved away from the movie series. While the studio put the Cage’s franchise into a coma, a new Dinesy show, National Treasure: Edge of History, was at work but not featuring Cage. After one season, the show was canceled. Now, fans finally have a positive update on the original franchise.

There was a time when Disney made ideal family movies that weren’t animated, or live action reboots of animated films. In fact, there was a time when Walt Disney would take on original live action true stories designed for the whole family to enjoy.
Now, thanks to the efforts of director Joachim Ronning and mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s clout and dedication, the studio has an echo of its past with Young Woman And The Sea, the true biopic and inspiring saga of Trudy Ederle.
In 1926, she became the first woman to swim the English Channel from France to England. Ederle’s remarkable achievement has nearly been forgotten and overlooked in the 100 years since it happened. But thanks to Glenn Stout’s 2009 book, Young Woman And The Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered The English Channel And Inspired The World, and A-List screenwriter Jeff Nathanson who discovered the book while rummaging through a bookstore one day and was convinced it would be a great film, the movie’s long journey to the screen is a successful one.
It still took years even for Bruckheimer to convince Disney to make it, and it is getting only a limited theatrical release before streaming. But hopefully, the inevitable word of mouth for this crowd-pleaser will make it more than limited. This is a big screen film that deserves to be seen with an audience, and not lost in the streaming larder. It also proves that they do make ’em like they used to, at least occasionally.
Basically following the linear story of Trudy (Olive Abercrombie plays the young Trudy), we see her early family life, and then her desire to make a difference for girls. The place she could do that was in the pool, an effort supported by her mother (Jeanette Hain), who knew from a previous ocean tragedy that learning to swim was important for her kids. That not only went for Trudy (Daisy Ridley), but also her older sister Meg (Tilda Cobham-Hervey), who would go on to become her sister’s biggest supporter, even on the boat that accompanied Trudy as she took on the English Channel.
Before that happened in 1926, Trudy would triumph and win a gold medal at the 1924 Paris Olympics. But taking on this task thought only possible for the male-dominated society of the time was something she became determined to do. It is no spoiler to say that indeed, on her second try, she did it even when it appeared she might be dead towards the end of the journey when she got lost in the darkness and separated from those keeping track of her. And in so doing this unheard-of feat, Trudy, who was partially deaf due to a childhood illness, beat previous male records by nearly two hours at 14 hours and 31 minutes (it held for 35 years), and this New York native got the largest victory parade ever in the history of the city. Ever.
But the crux of the story is seeing the perseverance it took to achieve this milestone, a belief that you never give up. Ridley simply embodies that spirit of this young woman (who eventually went deaf and died in 2003 at age 98) and delivers a memorable performance, including complete authenticity in her quest. Cobham-Hervey is excellent as well, and the parents are nicely played by Kim Bodnia as Henry, a dedicated German-born butcher and father who feared for his daughter, but then became a #1 fan, and especially by Hain, superb as the wise and determined mother, Gertrude, with a mind of her own and the will to do what is best for her family.
Stephen Graham is excellent and a lot of fun as the most unlikely of coaches, a man who, in 1911, became the second person to swim the Channel, and now is key to helping Trudy make history.
As you might expect with a Bruckheimer production, it looks magnificent, with excellent cinematography both above and below the waves (Oscar Faura was the Dp), production design from Nora Takacs Ekberg, and a sweeping score by Amelia Warner. Pulling all this off with so many water scenes could not have been easy, but Ronning, well-versed in water from Kon-Tiki and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (which he did for Bruckheimer) was clearly the right choice for the job. It looks sensational.
Producers are Bruckheimer, Nathanson, and Chad Oman.

Top Gun fans waited over thirty years for Top Gun: Maverick, but the wait was well worth it. The film was an overwhelming success, earning rave reviews and grossing $1.4 billion worldwide. Considering those box-office bucks, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Paramount is developing Top Gun 3 with Tom Cruise expected to reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell alongside Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw (Miles Teller) and Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin (Glen Powell).
Although we likely won’t have to wait as long as we did for Maverick, those involved with the threequel aren’t about to rush the project. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer gave a Top Gun 3 update to Games Radar, saying that he’s had “preliminary” conversations with Tom Cruise, but “we’re not there yet. [There’s] ways to go.“

"The Rock" contains some of the best action scenes of director Michael Bay's entire action-laden career, and for my money, it's also one of the filmmaker's best overall movies. Ed Harris' villain is an all-timer, Bay hadn't yet fully given in to all of his compulsions as a visualist, and he's working from a terrific, tightly paced script with an excellent premise and a great ticking clock element. Plus, the film helped cement Nicolas Cage as an unlikely action star, and featured a perfectly gruff performance from the legendary Sean Connery.
By 1996, Connery knew how to wield that legendary status extremely effectively. He was fully aware that a generation of Hollywood executives had grown up watching him play James Bond, who was arguably the coolest character in movies. So when Bay needed help on "The Rock" set fending off a studio executive who was supposed to deliver some bad news about the movie's financing,...

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks to us about director Joseph Kosinski’s untitled Formula 1 movie and the impact of last year’s strikes on its filming.
In early May 2024, reports emerged that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Formula 1 movie had a budget in excess of $300m. An already expensive production due to its real-world racing sequences and A-list stars – including Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem – its costs were reportedly pushed even higher by 2023’s Hollywood strikes.
There were even reports that footage captured during last year’s Silverstone British Grand Prix race had to be scrapped because the sponsor logos splashed across that year’s cars had changed between the 2023 and 2024 racing seasons – something a spokesperson from the Fia (the Formula 1 racing body) denied.

Columbia Pictures’ action-comedy movie “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is set to play in cinemas in mainland China from June 22, it was announced on Thursday.
Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the film is the fourth in the nearly 30-year-old Bad Boys franchise. It sees the titular Miami cops investigate corruption in the police force after their late boss is accused of colluding with a foreign mafia. But the tables are turned and the pair have to go on the run while still trying to solve the case.
The film releases in a multitude of international territories from June 5 and in North America from June 7. The China date, only two weeks later, is in keeping with recent trends that give Hollywood titles near-synchronized outings in the Middle Kingdom and a modicum of marketing runway.

After five-plus decades of moviemaking, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is still breaking his own records. The Michigan native is one of the creators behind the modern-day concept of a crowd-pleaser, and with a résumé that includes the franchises of Top Gun, Pirates of the Caribbean and Bad Boys, it’s natural to assume that one of his many notable hits would boast his highest audience test score. However, that honor instead belongs to his latest film, Young Woman and the Sea, which opens May 31 in theaters.
Directed by his Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales filmmaker, Joachim Rønning, Young Woman and the Sea tells the underdog story of Daisy Ridley’s Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, the largely unknown Olympic swimmer who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926. Quentin Tarantino is a lover of cinema first and a filmmaker second. The maverick director has often been vocal about his favorite films of all time as well as his current favorites. Tarantino has also criticized the changing landscape of the industry, echoing the sentiments of Martin Scorsese, who went on a war against the likes of Marvel and DC.
One film that Tarantino was pleasantly surprised by and loved was Tom Cruise’s action blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. A sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 classic, Tarantino appreciated director Joseph Kosinski’s vision and the respect he showed for the original. Though the Pulp Fiction director had a problem with Val Kilmer’s scene in the film, he mentioned that it still worked.

Top Gun: Maverick came more than three decades after the release of the first film starring Tom Cruise in the lead, and yet, it was as much of a resounding success as the original film from 1986. However, unlike a lot of stuff and people that were brought back from the first movie in this 2022 one, legendary filmmaker Tony Scott wasn’t one because of his devastating demise in 2012.

Since the younger Scott wasn’t there, Cruise reportedly decided to approach the older and equally legendary Scott brother, Ridley Scott, to helm the second movie in his Aviation film series. However, he was surprisingly not only met with a declined request by the iconic director, with the movie going to Joseph Kosinski instead, but was even met with his film being considered mediocre by Ridley!

Daisy Ridley is back on the big screen with one of her finest works to date in Young Woman and the Sea. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the biographical drama about legendary swimmer Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle is the highest testing film of Jerry Bruckheimer’s storied producorial career that includes the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, Beverly Hills Cop and Flashdance. Originally slated for a Disney+ exclusive release, Ridley and co. were rewarded with a limited theatrical run that begins on May 31. Such upgrades don’t come easy given the costs associated with theatrical exhibition, but as Rønning put it, Bruckheimer was “relentless” in his successful pursuit.
The film’s road to theatrical, in a way, parallels the underdog story that Young Woman and the Sea is telling involving Trudy, and Ridley considers this hard-earned achievement to be as rewarding as anything she’s done to date.

Does this headline sound familiar? Yes, it is! Top Producer Jerry Bruckheimer reveals some cool stuff about the upcoming Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt. Think of it like Top Gun: Maverick in the ground. The Tgm team implemented the same techniques to shoot Formula 1 races. But now they utilize four bespoke 6K cinema cameras with Ptz capabilities inside the race car cockpit.

You’ll see the cameras mounted all over the car. You’ve never seen speed, you’ve never seen the G-forces like this. It’s really amazing. As a civilian, I had no idea what it takes to be a driver. The aggression and dexterity, I have so much respect for it. This should be as authentic as we can get it.

As everyone knows, Tom Cruise leads an action-packed life akin to that of a movie star. The actor enjoys a good thrill, and he performs almost all of his own stunts. And it was his dedication that led him to accept one of his most prominent roles, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, in the 1986 action flick Top Gun.
So, in the case of this Paramount Pictures film, the actor had an unusual demand that ultimately saved the film from disaster. Well, after a less-than-ideal experience working with director Ridley Scott on the movie Legend, Cruise was understandably cautious about committing to a new project.
When producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer approached him with the script for Top Gun, Cruise liked it but felt that it “needed some work”.
