Just After Dawn on the morning of May 15, 2019, more than a dozen cops arrived at a home in the placid suburb of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. Armed with a search warrant, they ordered a member of the household to sit down and denied her access to her cellphone. Similar searches took place at other properties in Woodstock, New York, and Brooklyn. When it was over, according to court documents, the police left with cellphones, Usb drives, iPads, 1,300 pages of “physical documents,” four Apple MacBooks, and files filled with banking records.

Celebrated Spanish filmmaker María Trénor’s debut feature “Rock Bottom” will premiere in the main competition at this year’s Annecy Festival, and she has given Variety exclusive access to the film’s first trailer.
Produced by leading Catalan producer Alba Sotorra, the film is inspired by the life and music of U.K. artist Robert Wyatt. Trippy rotoscope animation interspersed with experimental segments tells a story set in the decadent 1970s in both New York and Mallorca. Wyatt’s album “Rock Bottom” scores a paradise-like beach story overflowing with art, flirtation, and recreational drugs. The film deftly weaves the fantasy experiences of Bob and his partner Alif in the two cities, creating a single time and place that could only exist in fiction. Or on a really good trip.
Variety recently caught up with Tenor to discuss her feature debut ahead of its Annecy world premiere.

Washington state isn’t just the birthplace of grunge; it’s also been the backdrop for some truly iconic music videos. Here are some you might not know were filmed in the Evergreen State. Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit Filmed in a desolate high school gym, this video heralded the grunge revolution. Kurt Cobain along with his band members, captured the raw teenage angst set against the backdrop of chaotic pep rallies and rebellious cheerleaders. As noted by Kurt Cobain in late 1991 studio sessions, his presence added authenticity to what became an anthem of a generation. Mudhoney’s Touch Me I’m Sick...

When You Visit Bob Ritchie at his home in the jagged hills outside Nashville, the guy who will likely greet you at the door is a tall, well-dressed, exceedingly polite gentleman who goes by “Uncle Tom.” Because of course he does. Ritchie makes his living as Kid Rock, but a big part of being Kid Rock these days involves doing things that are simultaneously provocative, offensive, and, at least to him, funny. It tracks, then, that a middle-aged white guy who began his career more than three decades ago in...

Dave Grohl honored Steve Albini during Foo Fighters’ concert in Charlotte on Thursday night by dedicating the band’s performance of “My Hero” to the In Utero producer.
“Tonight I’d like to dedicate this song to a friend that we lost the other day, who I’ve known a long, long time,” Grohl said. “He left us much too soon. He’s touched all of your lives, I’m sure. I’m talking about Steve Albini. For those of you who know, you know. For those of you who don’t know, just remember that name: Steve Albini. Let’s sing this one for him.”

Nirvana have paid tribute to Steve Albini by sharing the four-page letter he sent the band before agreeing to record their beloved final studio album, In Utero. Albini passed away yesterday (May 8th) at the age of 61.
The letter was posted on Nirvana’s official Twitter account, accompanied simply by the caption, “Steve Albini.” In the document, Albini outlines his steadfast philosophies, both regarding his approach to recording and his approach to business. Effectively, it’s Albini responding to Kurt Cobain’s request to produce the album by saying, “Only if we do it right.”
“I think the very best thing you could do at this point is exactly what you are talking about doing: bang a record out in a couple of days, with high quality but minimal ‘production’ and no interference from the front office bulletheads. If that is indeed what you want to do, I would love to be involved,...

Steve Albini, the revolutionary music engineer who helped define the sounds of the ‘80s and ‘90s, has passed away at 61. The cause of death has been ruled a heart attack.
Following a bout on the zine scene, Steve Albini hit the music world full force in the 1980s, founding pivotal punk band Big Black, which helped evolve the genre past expectations and was a seminal band of the post-hardcore movement. He, too, formed Shellac in the early ‘90s.
But outside of these bands, Steve Albini was by far better known to music lovers of the era for his work as an engineer. The first major record he worked on was the Pixies’ Surfer Rosa in 1988, an album so influential for Nirvana that they insisted on bringing Albini on board for their Nevermind follow-up, In Utero, with Kurt Cobain himself noting that the drums alone would be enough to change their sound.

In six short years, Big Black pushed underground rock to become edgier, more stomach-churning, and more pyrotechnic. On the handful of EPs and two full-lengths, Atomizer and Songs About Fucking, they released, Steve Albini, who died Tuesday, wrote about everything from child abuse to murderous gangsters and always with a wink as if shining a dark mirror back at buttoned-up middle America. But by 1987, the group — which included guitarist Santiago Durango, bassist Dave Riley, and a drum machine called Roland — decided it had accomplished its mission. So they booked a...

Steve Albini, a singer and guitarist best known for producing some of the most groundbreaking and influential albums of the alt-rock genre, died of a heart attack at his Chicago recording studio Electrical Audio. He was 61.
Albini’s death and cause of death was confirmed by Taylor Hales of Electrical Audio.
Born July 22, 1962, in Pasadena, Albini moved to the Chicago area after high school to study journalism at Northwestern University. While there, he began writing for local punk rock ‘zines and beginning to record and engineer albums for local bands.
Stubbornly opposed to the larger music industry and its exploitation of artists, Albini formed the Chicago-based band Big Black in 1981, recording the first of several albums, an EP for the Chicago label Ruthless Records, a label he co-managed. That band last until 1987.

Steve Albini, the legendary record producer and engineer behind Nirvana’s In Utero, Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, and countless other classic alternative rock albums, has died of a heart attack. He was 61 years old.
News of Albini’s death was confirmed to Consequence via a staff member at his recording studio, Electrical Audio in Chicago.
Preferring the term “engineer” over “producer,” Albini was lauded for his minimalist approach to recording sessions and focus on capturing the natural sound of musicians’ performances. As a singer and guitarist in his own right, Albini also led the bands Shellac and Big Black.
Albini was born in Pasadena, California, on July 22nd in 1962. He went to college at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and spent most of his career based in Chicago, where he founded Electrical Audio.
His music career essentially started as singer-guitarist of Big Black, a band he formed while still a student at Northwestern.

For the past 30 years, Kathleen Hanna has made a career unapologetically — and often uncomfortably — speaking truth. Go on, take everything – and everyone down a peg. Courtney Love is going after some of the most popular female artists on the scene and of all time, taking digs at everybody from Taylor Swift to Madonna. Well, let’s hear it, Miss World!
Courtney Love’s former band Hole made its mark by being one of the key female-led grunge acts of the ‘90s. But for her, today’s music is all just a copy of a copy. “It’s great that there are so many successful women in the music industry, but lots of them are becoming a cliché…Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music. They’re all the same. If you play something on Spotify, you get bombarded with a lot of stuff that’s exactly the same.”
So, which modern acts make Courtney Love’s celebrity skin crawl? Taylor Swift for one.

If you really want to know about making music, fame, exploitation, addiction, egos and challenging personalities – look to fiction. Here are our favourites
Making a movie about an iconic musician can be perilous – there are so many stakeholders with differing versions of events, and so many diehard fans looking for a perfect representation of their hero, that many music biopics end up being sanitised and glib. Look no further than Back to Black, Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Amy Winehouse biopic, for a perfect example of a film that attempts to satisfy every involved party and ended up offending a lot of fans and critics instead.
Movies about fake musicians, on the other hand, tend to have a lot more to say about making art, the struggles of fame and the music industry than most biopics. Although many of them are thinly veiled studies of real celebrities, the freedom offered by creating a character – such as Blake,...

With a new BBC radio series now launched, Courtney Love is once again proving the power of the adage “go large or go home.”
In a wide ranging interview with the UK’s Standard today, the former Hole front woman puts forth her take on some of the biggest names in the music industry. Let’s just say, Love bites in deep in the newspaper, to quote from her 1998 tune “Celebrity Skin,” to get her pound of flesh from Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Madonna and recent Coachella headliner Lana Del Rey.
“Taylor is not important,” the People vs. Larry Flint star says of the superstar.
“She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love added.
The contrarian opinion on Swift is a big shift from where Love was on the Folklore singer just over two years ago.

We mustn’t dwell… no, not today, not on Rex Manning Day. Today marks the 30th anniversary of Rex Manning Day, the fictional day celebrated in the Allan Moyle disaffected teen comedy Empire Records. Rex Manning Day is celebrated to honor the memory and legacy of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who on April 8th was found dead in his Seattle mansion on Lake Washington Boulevard from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after dying on April 5, 1994.

In 1991, Nirvana closed out their seminal album Nevermind with a song titled “Something in the Way,” in which Kurt Cobain imagined what life would be like if he lived underneath the Young Street Bridge in his hometown, Aberdeen, Washington. Now, that historic bridge is facing destruction.
Connecting North Aberdeen with the city’s downtown area, the bridge was built in 1956 and inspired Cobain’s classic lyrics, starting with the lines “Underneath the bridge/ tarp has sprung a leak…” In the 30 years since his death, the bridge has become a memorial of sorts for Cobain, and currently sports layers of well-wishes and Nirvana-related graffiti on its walls.
But, as explained by a website created by the city of Aberdeen for the project (via Guerrilla Candy), the bridge is suffering from the effects of “aging and deteriorating bridge conditions.” Now, with a $23 million federal funding grant, the city is hoping to revitalize...

Kurt Cobain‘s daughter Frances Bean Cobain is sharing a message on the 30th anniversary of her dad’s passing.
In case you weren’t aware, Frances, 31, was just 20 months old when Kurt died by suicide in 1994.
On Friday (April 5), Frances took to Instagram to share a touching tribute for her late dad, 30 years later.

Frances shared a slideshow of photos from her childhood, including some of her and Kurt.
“In the last 30 years my ideas around loss have been in a continuous state of metamorphosing,” she wrote in the caption. “The biggest lesson learned through grieving for almost as long as I’ve been conscious, is that it serves a purpose. The duality of life & death, pain & joy, yin & yang, need to exist along side each other or none of this would have any meaning.”
Frances then described the love she could have had with Kurt.

Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, has posted a heartfelt tribute to her late father on the 30th anniversary of the Nirvana frontman’s death.
Kurt took his own life at the age of 27 on April 5th, 1994, when Frances Bean was just a year-and-a-half old. The now 31-year-old Frances Bean took to Instagram today to describe her feelings of loss and to honor her late father.
Her full post, which is accompanied by a slideshow of family photos, reads as follows:
“30 years ago my dad’s life ended. The 2nd & 3rd photo capture the last time we were together while he was still alive. His mom Wendy would often press my hands to her cheeks & say, with a lulling sadness, ‘you have his hands’. She would breathe them in as if it were her only chance to hold him just a little bit closer, frozen in time.

Thirty years after the death of Kurt Cobain, the BBC will air a documentary that it says will “demystify” the Generation X icon and grunge music legend. Moments That Shook the Music: Kurt Cobain, a feature-length documentary directed by John Osborne and produced by Touchdown Films, airs Saturday, April 13, on BBC iPlayer and BBC 2, as part of programming entirely dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Cobain’s death. The Nirvana frontman died on April 5, 1994, in what was ruled a suicide.
“This documentary aims to demystify that moment and tell the story in a direct and accurate way with footage shot by the people who were there,” said Osborne in an interview with the BBC. “Kurt Cobain was the reluctant voice of a generation and his death has left a huge void. The only way to make sense of what happened is to make a testimony that audiences won’t be able to stop watching.

Mumbai, April 2 (Ians) Auteur Imtiaz Ali is one of the rare filmmakers who strikes a perfect balance between philosophy and entertainment in his stories.
While his earlier works like ‘Socha Na Tha’ and ‘Jab We Met’ were more on the entertaining side, films like ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009), ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Tamasha’ have aged like a fine wine and have cultivated a new fan base which craves for deeper meaning to a story as much as the entertainment.
The filmmaker is now gearing up for his ninth film, the biopic based on the highest selling Punjabi musician of all times, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’.
“There are a lot of ‘9’ happening,” Imtiaz told Ians as he seems in a quirky mood.
“Nine is my favourite number, A.R. Rahman (his music composer) also loves nine, he has made ’99 Songs’ and ‘Chamkila’ is my ninth film”.

In moviemaking, directors manage the extreme stuff. Matt Reeves, who made The Batman, etched some rough memories as well. He nearly said no to Warner Bros.’ Batman offer due to the film War from the Planets of the Apes.

It was a major project. However, Reeves adhered to his storytelling passion and made it work. It’s interesting to explore, how he pulled off Robert Pattinson’s Batman film. Reeves’ determination radiates through, even when facing the cosmic chaos of showbiz.

It is not coincidental that Netflix is releasing the Diljit Dosanjh-Parineeti Chopra-starrer ‘Chamkila’ a day after Sidhu Moose Wala’s death anniversary, for the subject of the biopic, singing sensation Amarjit Singh Chamkila, was as controversial in his lifetime as Moose Wala and he too was shot dead, but the case remains unsolved till today.
At the time of his assassination, along with his wife Amarjot and two of their band members, on March 8, 1988, the man Amit Trivedi described as the “Elvis of Punjab”, was 27 years old, at the peak of his career, and in so much demand that he was said to have been booked for “366 days in a year”.
Moose Wala was 29 when he was killed on May 29, 2022, allegedly on orders from Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar’s associate, Lawrence Bishnoi. If Moose Wala was controversial in his lifetime for his espousal of a gun culture – the same gun...

The skeletons in Harvey Weinstein’s closet came pouring out one October morning in 2017. All of the people he had tried to silence with his power for decades, no longer wanted to hide his crimes from him. Within 24 hours, one of the most powerful people in Hollywood had a manhunt out for him.
People from all corners of the industry were accusing him of horrible things with mountains of proof to back them up.

Going from years of being drunk with power, there was no way Weinstein could buy his way out of this problem. Before this, he was known as ‘the Bully of Hollywood’; a man who held his power over everyone who dared to cross him and played filthy.

Setting the tone with a slower, orchestral rendition of Nirvana’s Something in the Way, the first trailer for The Batman gave fans a preview of what to expect: a much darker, if not brutal, portrayal of the beloved DC character. With a teaser leading up to the thrilling moment when the music stops, Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight was supposed to be a Batman unlike any other. And it only got better from there.
While a lot of trailers continue the stale practice of turning a popular song into a dark cover, Kurt Cobain’s original song was fully embraced in The Batman trailer.

The 2022 film was an outlier, free from the usual superhero trappings and resolutely downbeat, and the follow-up should also go beyond the conventional
Matt Reeves’ The Batman feels like a movie out of time, a superhero epic wonderfully bereft of fantasy elements, superpowers and magical bells and whistles. It is the kind of comic book movie that people who do not really like comic book movies can love, a sumptuously languid crime procedural that is full of orchestral, spiky splendour and Gotham City grit. A superhero flick that is so different from the likes of The Flash or Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that it might as well be from a different film genre entirely.
And it is here perhaps that we should give credit to Warner Bros’ struggling DC regime. No matter how terrible its now-abandoned “extended universe” became over the past decade or so – and there were some...

Few things are as synonymous with rebellious, raucous, no-good rock ‘n’ roll as finishing a set by smashing a guitar — be it Kurt Cobain, Phoebe Bridgers, or Pete Townshend. When it comes to the latter, however, bandmate and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey might not have the same drive to use his axe like… well, an axe. In fact, Daltrey has compared smashing a guitar to breaking the neck of something (or someone) else he holds close to his heart: his wife.
During his recent appearance on Shaun Keaveny’s Daily Grind podcast, Daltrey described the one time he engaged in such destruction, as well as the guilt that followed. “The trouble is the guitar was worth 50 gigs,” Daltrey said. “I’ve only ever smashed one guitar and I’m really sorry I did it.”
To illustrate just how deep his feelings of shame ran, Daltrey turned to the surprisingly violent analogy.

By the time you figure out where a song by New York rapper and producer Xaviersobased is coming from, it’s usually already over. On 2021’s “115 & LSD,” which the 20-year-old cites as a creative breakthrough in his music, he builds up a cacophony of exotic-bird whistles, overlapping hums, overheard yells, exploding machine-gun shells, and blown-out 808s across just two minutes. Xavier’s songs often repeat halfway through at double speed; his voice tumbles through verses about twerking and trapping and blunt toking and Xbox. “On My Own,” from his recent mixtape Keep It Goin Xav,...

While John Lennon was still in The Beatles, he put out an album with a cover that shocked people around the world. His bandmates even had to field calls from reporters about it. On the cover of Two Virgins, one of three experimental albums Lennon released with Yoko Ono, the couple posed naked. When his aunt saw the image, she complained that Lennon looked ugly. This, he said, was his intention.
John Lennon surprised people with one album cover
In 1968, Lennon and Ono released Two Virgins. The cover featured full frontal nudity, prompting many record stores to put the album in a paper bag in order to sell it. Lennon shared the intention behind the photograph.

Everyone basically agrees that John Lennon and Kurt Cobain are two of the biggest names in classic rock. Yoko Ono, on the other hand, had no interest in those comparisons — but Cobain himself did! Here’s a look at why he identified with the “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” singer so much but wasn’t a fan of Paul McCartney.
Yoko Ono said Kurt Cobain had similarities to John Lennon and so did all rockers
During a 2013 interview with Songfacts, a reporter asked Yoko about the state of rock music. “Rock music is rocking now!” she replied. “We are telling the world, we are going to survive, in whatever condition we are put in.”
The reporter asked Yoko if she thought Cobain was similar to the “Imagine” singer, especially considering that both of them were so honest in their songs and in interviews. “Don’t waste your time checking...

A global search for Paul McCartney’s missing 1961 Höfner guitar ended successfully when the Beatles pop star was reunited with his guitar in December. McCartney bought the musical instrument in 1961 in Hamburg, Germany, for $38. The guitar was used in some of the classic Beatles hits, including Love Me Do and She Loves You. It was stolen from the back of a van in West London in 1972.

The search for the instrument was initiated last year when McCartney urged manufacturers Höfner to find his long-lost guitar. Nick Wass for Höfner, and Scott and Naomi Jones, two journalists, headed the search project named The Lost Bass Project.

Tierra Whack has dropped “27 Club,” the latest preview of her new album, World Wide Whack. Stream it below.
A reference to the infamous 27 Club of celebrities who died at the age of 27 — including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain — the new single was produced by Whack’s frequent collaborator J Melodic and ProdbyBRIANNA. The track dives deep into Whack’s mental health, as she sings about losing touch with family and friends while embodying the pain of coming up against seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
After explicitly mentioning thoughts of suicide, Whack sings, “Like a glass full but I’m empty/ Said, ‘I’m broken, can you fix me?’/ If I’m dreamin,’ you should pinch me/ Got a gun to the head, don’t tempt me.”
Addressing the song in an Instagram post, Whack wrote, “I was in a dark place for a long time, and no one knew. I...

Lisa Roberts, who co-founded the band Hole with Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson in 1989, packed her bags and relocated to Ukraine at the outbreak of the country’s war with Russia.
Roberts’ move to Ukraine was revealed in a new interview with The Daily Beast, in which she recalls first being drawn to the Ukrainian cause via the country’s heavy metal community. Once she learned that friends of hers — and members of the Ukrainian metal scene — were in need of dire assistance, she moved to Donbas to serve as the logistics manager for the humanitarian Ngo Road to Relief.
Before joining the front lines in Donbas, the California native had been working for a major company in logistics and felt her skills could be translated to the humanitarian aid efforts needed in Ukraine. She volunteered with Ngo last year to provide aid to Donbas’ ransacked villages, and is now...

The Beatles paved the way for many things, including the British ska scene, the mainstream acceptance of psychedelia, and the entire genre of heavy metal music. It’s also arguable a song from The Beatles’ The White Album inspired Nirvana and other grunge bands. Here’s a look at the track and what Kurt Cobain had to say about The Beatles.
The Beatles’ ‘The White Album’ has a dark song that feels like a Nirvana doing blues
The White Album runs the guts of emotions. It’s happy, nervous, angry, lovesick, and sad. One song from the album is both very angry and very sad at the same time: “Yer Blues.” The blues-rock number is one of the hardest-rocking tracks in the Fab Four’s discography. In it, John Lennon unleashes a lot of negative emotions, including a desire to die.
It’s easy to see “Yer Blues” as a predecessor to grunge.
