Sean Baker’s “Anora” is betting big with a fall release date.
The feature, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, will be released October 18 from Neon, IndieWire can confirm. The limited release window makes “Anora” primed for the fall festival circuit, with possible inclusions at Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF, which concludes right before “Anora” will hit theaters.
“Anora” stars “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” breakout Mikey Madison as an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). Writer/director Baker previously helmed Oscar-nominated film “The Florida Project,” groundbreaking iPhone movie “Tangerine,” and Simon Rex’s career-best “Red Rocket.”
The release of “Anora” on October 18 proves that Neon has high hopes for the Palme d’Or winner. Neon has released a trio of Palme d’Or winners before, all in October and all going on to be Oscar-nominated.

On the indie side of filmmaking life, Sean Price Williams has seen it all. He’s worked with the Safdies, Alex Ross Perry, Nathan Silver, Robert Green, and Athina Rachel Tsangari, and often more than once. He’s the premier chronicler of New York City independent movies behind the camera, typically shooting on celluloid, and bringing surreal, gritty poetry to character-driven stories that feel on the ground like portraits of versions of ourselves.
One of the most unabashedly movie-loving cinematographers working today, Williams last year moved to directing for the sprawling, scratchy-edged tale of East Coast youth, “The Sweet East,” which remains in theaters and features stars like Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex, Jeremy O. Harris, and Ayo Edebiri.
But even more recently than that directorial debut, he released a “1000 Movies” book via Metrograph Editions, a simple, unadorned paperback that offers, rather than commentary, pages listing his favorite essential films and...

In what will surely come as a huge shock to the general public and cause no small number of monocles to pop out, Amazon MGM Studios has elected to retitle Zoë Kravitz's feature directing debut, which was previously going under the not-at-all provocative moniker "Pussy Island." Kravitz's film will instead be released as "Blink Twice," which for me conjures memories of David Tennant's 10th Doctor desperately warning Carey Mulligan not to blink around the Weeping Angels in the classic modern "Doctor Who" episode "Blink."
That association isn't entirely inappropriate, either. "Blink Twice," like "Blink," is a potpourri of horror, mystery-thriller, and humor with an English actor at its core. In this case, it's Naomi Ackie of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody," and "Master of None" season 3 fame starring as a young woman who accompanies a tech billionaire -- played by Kravitz's current real-life significant other,...

By now, movies should surely have taught us all that going to remote tropical paradises with mysterious billionaires should be right up there on the travel danger list with, say, flying Ryanair. Yet still people keep accepting those invitations. And we suppose when the person doing the asking is Channing Tatum in full Chanrisma mode, it's hard to turn it down, but Naomi Ackie finds that out to her cost in the first trailer for Blink Twice, which you can find below…
With Zoë Kravitz making her directorial debut here, the film finds Ackie as cocktail waitress Frida, who meets tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum). There's an instant connection and soon he's whisking her and her best pal Jess (Alia Shawkat) away to his private island to party with his loopy trustafarian friends.
Initially, it all seems wonderful — sun soaked days, party-filled nights. But then strange things start to happen.

It helps to have friends. Look no further than the first trailer for Zoë Kravitz’s Blink Twice, which boasts a stronger ensemble than your average directing debut: Channing Tatum, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Alia Shawkat, Christian Slater, Geena Davis, and a last-second appearance from Kyle MacLachlan. The cast is led by Naomi Ackie, and ahead of an August 23 release there’s a first, LCD Soundsystem-punctuated trailer that suggests she did well hiring Adam Newport-Berra.
Here’s the official synopsis: “When tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. "Are you having a good time?" Amazon MGM Studios has revealed the first official trailer for Blink Twice, a mystery thriller marking the feature directorial debut of actress Zoë Kravitz. She's co-writing & directing in collaboration with another writer from the "High Fidelity" series she starred on recently. It's opening in theaters in August. "This summer, make some memories." Naomi Ackie stars as Frida is a young waitress in Los Angeles who has her eye on tech entrepreneur Slater King. On a dream vacation to his private island, strange things start to happen. Frida will have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out alive. Uh oh... Co-starring Channing Tatum as Slater, along with Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Kyle MacLachlan, Haley Joel Osment, Geena Davis, and Alia Shawkat. At first glance, this reminds me of Don't Worry Darling with many similarities, but it also seems like...

A teenage girl meets all manner of extremists, hipsters and hoodlums in Sean Price Williams’ amusing, contemporary adventure
High-school student Lillian (Talia Ryder) gets separated from her classmates and chaperones at a pizza parlour during a school trip to Washington DC because a deranged shooter is convinced paedophiles are operating out of its basement. And so begins an adventure up and back down the eastern seaboard, taking Lillian from her native South Carolina up through the nation’s capital, to New York City, Vermont and beyond, meeting all manner of eccentrics, extremists, hipsters and hoodlums. It’s the sort of lolloping, weird ride through society that’s a textbook example of the classical picaresque, in which a low-born, none-too-honest but appealing protagonist gets up to stuff. Think of 18th-century novels like Tom Jones or Moll Flanders, but updated to contemporary America – although the film contrives to get Lillian dolled up in revolutionary-era petticoats and corsetry,...

“The Righteous Gemstones” star Tony Cavalero has joined the cast of “Lips Like Sugar,” a crime thriller set during the 1984 summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles, starring Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson.
Cavalero is best known for his breakout performance as Keefe, the lovable ex-Satanist turned fan-favorite mullet man, in Danny McBride’s cult hit HBO series. “The Righteous Gemstones” was renewed for a fourth season last July.
With “Lips Like Sugar,” Cavalero joins a buzzy ensemble which also includes Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis, Sasha Calle, Kathryn Newton and Erin Moriarty. Exclusive: The Sydney Sweeney & Paul Walter Hauser title, Americana, which was one of the prolific acquisition titles from last year’s SXSW, has finally seen its worldwide rights go to Lionsgate.
Why did a movie with big stars and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes take so long to sell? I understand part of the hold-up stems from the pic’s financier, Bron Studios, going into bankruptcy.
The Tony Tost written and directed movie follows local outsiders and outcasts in a small South Dakota town whose lives violently intertwine after a rare artifact falls onto the black market. Americana also stars pop singer Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, Gavin Maddox Bergman, Simon Rex, Derek Hinkey, Toby Huss, and Harriet Sansom Harris.

Nic Pizzolatto got his career as a storyteller started by writing short stories and a novel called Galveston, then made his move into television by writing a couple episodes of the first season of the AMC series The Killing. He wasn’t pleased with that experience, telling Nola.com that, “I want to be the guiding vision. I don’t do well serving someone else’s vision.” So he left The Killing as it headed into season 2 and went off to create his own show: True Detective, which found a home at HBO. Pizzolatto’s deal with HBO was renewed twice over the years as he crafted three seasons of True Detective, with his final deal with the network earning him $3 million a year. He was going to work on the network’s Perry Mason reboot, but had to let it go so he could focus on True Detective. Once True Detective season 3 wrapped up,...

For those who don’t know, Zoe is making her feature film directorial debut with the movie, which stars Channing and Naomi Ackie.
Zoe previously explained how the title was intentional.

Amazon MGM has announced (via Deadline) that they will be giving the thriller Pussy Island a global theatrical release on August 23rd – but, to the shock and surprise of no one, they’re not actually going to be releasing the film under the title Pussy Island. The feature directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz (who played Catwoman in The Batman), the thriller is now going by the title Blink Twice. Turns out Zoë Kravitz did, in fact, change the name of her provocative “Pussy Island.” Kravitz’s feature directorial debut, which she co-wrote with “High Fidelity” scribe E.T. Feigenbaum, will receive a theatrical release from Amazon MGM Studios on August 23 as the newly-titled “Blink Twice.”
Kravitz previously told The Wall Street Journal Magazine that she would not change the name of the feature after writing it in 2017 and later updating the script “a million times” as the #MeToo movement made her rethink the premise.
“Blink Twice” follows tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum), who invites cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) on a dream vacation to his private island. Yet, while on the trip, strange things start to happen and Frida begins to question her reality.
Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan, and Geena Davis round out the cast. “Blink Twice” is produced by writer/director Kravitz,...

When we first reported on the directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz (The Batman) the project was titled Pussy Island, but we’ve learned this week that the thriller is now titled Blink Twice.
Deadline brings us this latest update today, reporting that Kravitz’s Blink Twice – Pussy Island was the better title, but I digress – will be released by Amazon MGM Studios on August 23.
It’s interesting to note that the film will be released in theaters, rather than debuting on Prime Video. Whereas Doug Liman’s Road House, also from MGM, is going direct to Prime.
Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie star in the MGM thriller.
In Blink Twice, “Tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, and sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. It’s paradise. Wild...

The Florida Project director Sean Baker has come on board to executive produce Modern Whore, Nicole Bazuin’s documentary adaptation of Andrea Werhun’s sex work memoir.
The feature-length hybrid film is currently shooting narrative re-enactments as part of a doc based on Modern Whore: A Memoir, a 2022 book that recalled Werhun’s work as an escort and in strip clubs, for which Bazuin provided extensive photography.
The illustrated memoir in turn sprang from a 2020 short film Modern Whore that Werhun starred in, Bazuin directed and which had its world premiere at SXSW. The Modern Whore feature documentary will be told from Werhun’s perspective and have her portray her former escort alias Mary Ann and her stripper persona Sophia, as well a more recent foray into OnlyFans as part of her sex work career in Toronto.
The indie will also incorporate writing and collaborations with other sex workers telling their own stories.

Unlike a movie, a TV show is not generally meant to be consumed in a single sitting. It is, at least in theory, designed to be enjoyed episode by episode. So having already celebrated the best series of the year (and the best TV performances), we’re here now to highlight a few individual chapters that particularly stood out to us from our hundreds and hundreds of hours of viewing.
As a rule, we excluded any title that had already made either of our individual top 10s. (Sorry, Richie episode of The Bear. And “Long, Long Time” from The Last of Us. And half this season of Succession. Half this season of Reservation Dogs. And, and, and …) This was in part to save ourselves the trouble of singing praises we’ve already sung so many times before, but mostly in an effort to spread the love. For the same reasons,...

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Jeffrey Wright with the Montecito Award at a Feb. 15 event. At the event, Wright will discuss his career leading up to this year’s performance in “American Fiction,” for which he has received lead actor nominations for the Gotham, Spirit, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
“I’ve been a fan of Mr. Wright since I first saw him in 1993 in the original Broadway production of “Angels in America.” I’ve since admired that he brings a high level of class and integrity to every role he does. Yet, no film had capitalized on his extraordinary range and virtuosity until “American Fiction.” It is about time,” Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
Wright has received Tony, Emmy, AFI and Golden Globe awards and has appeared in “Rustin,” “No Time to Die,” “Westworld,” “Asteroid City” and “The Batman.”
Past recipients of the Montecito Award include Angela Bassett,...
