The State Department will screen 20 Days In Mariupol, nominated in the feature documentary Oscar category this year, at an event on February 27.
Elizabeth Allen, the under secretary of state for public diplomacy, will give remarks at the screening along with Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.
The event is tied to the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion into Ukraine, which is Saturday. Through February and March, U.S. embassies and American spaces will be hosting screenings.
The documentary also is getting a new theatrical release and will air on PBS on Thursday.
The film is directed by Mstyslav Chernov, who was part of a team of Associated Press journalists who were trapped in Mariupol. They were the only international reporters left in the city. In a statement, Chernov said, “The suffering and destruction you see in the documentary continues today as the war in Ukraine rages on.

Earlier, Leguizamo told a reporter that he “definitely” would be hitting the campaign trail for Joe Biden in 2024.
Asked about Biden’s outreach to Latino voters, Leguizamo said, “I think he’s doing the right things, which is getting Latin consulatns and talking to Latin experts who tell him how to address us, and make the effort. If you make the effort, we will be there, but you have to make the effort. I think he’s doing all that — him and Kamala Harris as well.”

This is as sexy as Hollywood pix got in 1960. John O'Hara's novel about class snobbery and the drive for success posits Paul Newman as a moody go-getter. In glossy soap opera fashion, his silver spoon-fed bride Joanne Woodward morphs into an unfaithful monster. Some adulterous relationships are excused and others not in this glossy, morally rigged melodrama. In other words, it's prime entertainment material. Archivist and activist Carl Malamud once likened state and federal cases as the source code to America's operating system. Unfortunately, many legal documents remain hidden from public inspection. One example comes from a lawsuit filed this past July by DirecTV against Al Jazeera America. The complaint was submitted with heavy redaction. If there was an award given to the year's most extreme blacking out of so-called "secrets," the parties involved in this dispute would surely deserve to beat any spy agency for this one. Earlier this week, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White stood up to

Ivor Novello last film: 'Autumn Crocus' (photo: Ivor Novello and Fay Compton in 'Autumn Crocus') Can a plain looking, naive spinster school teacher ever find real love in faraway places? This was a question asked by Shirley Booth in Arthur Laurents' 1952 stage play The Time of the Cuckoo; Katharine Hepburn in the 1955 David Lean-directed film version, Summertime (1955); and Elizabeth Allen in the 1965 Richard Rodgers-Steven Sondheim musical adaptation, Do I Hear a Waltz? Can such a woman's yearning for romance ever be satisfied? "Yes" and "No," according to Basil Dean's fine 1934 British film Autumn Crocus, which marked the last film appearance of British stage and screen superstar Ivor Novello (Alfred Hitchcok's The Lodger). Autumn Crocus starts out during the holiday season, when two British schoolteachers decide to spend their vacation together on the Continent. Soft-hearted Jenny Grey (Fay Compton) longs to see the Austrian Alps,...

Charlton Heston movies: ‘A Man for All Seasons’ remake, ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (photo: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur) (See previous post: “Charlton Heston: Moses Minus Staff Plus Chariot Equals Ben-Hur.”) I’ve yet to watch Irving Rapper’s melo Bad for Each Other (1954), co-starring the sultry Lizabeth Scott — always a good enough reason to check out any movie, regardless of plot or leading man. A major curiosity is the 1988 made-for-tv version of A Man for All Seasons, with Charlton Heston in the Oscar-winning Paul Scofield role (Sir Thomas More) and on Fred Zinnemann’s director’s chair. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Thomas More’s wife in the TV movie (Wendy Hiller in the original) had a cameo as Anne Boleyn in the 1966 film. According to the IMDb, Robert Bolt, who wrote the Oscar-winning 1966 movie (and the original play), is credited for the 1988 version’s screenplay as well. Also of note,...

Back in April, members of the cast of Happy Days, including Marion Ross, Erin Moran, Don Most, Anson Williams, and the estate of the late Tom Bosley, filed a lawsuit against CBS, claiming that the network violated breach of contract and owed them for merchandising revenues that they had been cut out of. The $10 million suit claimed the stars of the sitcom “were guaranteed five percent of royalties profits if their images appeared on a product.”
CNN.com reported yesterday that the fraud claim was thrown out by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White, who ruled in favor of CBS.

A judge in California has thrown out a claim from Happy Days cast members who allege TV bosses committed fraud by failing to pay them for merchandising sales.
A number of the sitcom's stars, including Marion Ross, Anson Williams, Don Most, and Erin Moran, filed a $10 million (£6.3 million) lawsuit earlier this year, claiming CBS chiefs owed them money from sales of Happy Days-themed merchandise which features their images.
They were subsequently handed cheques with values ranging from $6,000 (£3,750) to $6,500 (£4,063), but vowed to press ahead with their case.
The group suffered a setback on Wednesday when Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White ruled in favour of CBS on the fraud claim.
The case will now proceed only with a breach of contract suit and the actors cannot receive punitive damages at the 2012 trial, according to CNN.
The group's lawyer, Jon Pfeiffer, says, "We intend to press forward with the lawsuit. If we can't punish the defendants, we certainly intend to expose their practices."
The series ran between 1974 and 1984.

Nicollette Sheridan’s prospects are getting slimmer in her wrongful termination lawsuit against ABC and Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, reports the Associated Press. After limiting the damages the former Housewives villainess could win at October’s trial, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White urged Sheridan to resolve the suit. “You’re going to spend a lot of money on this case,” White told attorneys.According to Sheridan’s suit, she was unceremoniously fired from the show after complaining about physical abuse from Cherry. Los Angeles, California (X17online) -- Former Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan will only get one season's lost wages for the show, a judge ruled Monday. The judge in Sheridan's lawsuit against ABC and executive producer Marc Cherry ruled that if Sheridan wins an upcoming jury trial, she will get only season six's lost wages from the show instead of that season plus two more. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White urged the parties to come to a settlement, saying, "You're going to spend a lot of money on this case." Sheridan originally sued for $20 million, saying she was slapped in the face by Cherry and then written off the show. The actress then dropped claims of emotional abuse and later, the judge tossed her claims of sexual harassment and assault. Now, the lawsuit is over wrongful termination. Judge White said Sheridan's role on the show beyond the...

Nicollette Sheridan hit another setback in her lawsuit against ABC and "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry, the Associated Press reports. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White limited the actress' potential damages from the claim, ruling that she could only receive one season's earnings if she wins the suit, rather than two seasons or more, which her attorney had argued for. The ruling effectively limits Sheridan's potential win from the case to the $980,000 that she would have earned on Season 6 of "Housewives," had her character, Edie Britt, not been...

The 47-year-old actress – who is suing for wrongful termination and gender discrimination – has been urged by Judge Elizabeth Allen White to settle the case before it goes to trial in October.
The judge warned: "You're going to spend a lot of money on this case."
During a hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday (29.08.11), Nicollette's lawyer Patrick Maloney called for jurors to be allowed to consider whether the star was entitled to wages for at least two extra seasons.
However, the judge ruled she could only seek damages for one year's pay, approximately $980,000 after declaring the show's producers had discretion to write out Nicollette's character Edie Britt when they saw fit to do so.
In yesterday's hearing, the judge – who has already thrown out her harassment claims against show creator and executive producer Marc Cherry – ruled the actress cannot make reference to the programme chief's alleged rude behaviour towards others during the trial.

A Los Angeles judge has urged Nicollette Sheridan to settle her lawsuit for wrongful termination from Desperate Housewives after ruling the actress will only be entitled to limited damages if she wins a court battle.
The star filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against show creator Marc Cherry last year, alleging he slapped her in the face after she expressed an opinion about a script he had written, and then fired her when she complained to producers.
Sheridan, who played sexy real estate dealer Edie Britt in the series, later amended the suit but still sought damages for wrongful termination and gender discrimination.

The judge presiding over former "Desperate Housewives" star Nicollette Sheridan's lawsuit against series creator Marc Cherry and ABC may have made a decision benefiting the actress. Reuters reports that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White rejected ABC's complaint that one of the causes of action mentioned in the suit is nebulous. The network attempted to get one of the accusations thrown out because it involves three claims: discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation and age. In response, Judge White wrote in a tentative order: "Although annoying, inconvenient and inconsiderate, the failure to separate the three distinct wrongs does not result in an inability to understand what is alleged." Sheridan played Edie Britt on "Desperate Housewives" from 2004 through 2009 before her character was killed off. In the $20 million lawsuit, Sheridan is suing for wrongful termination, and assault and battery, among other claims. The suit, filed in April, now moves toward the discovery phase.
