It had been five long years since the Jamaican-born reggae artist landed high on the American charts with “Boombastic” and his follow-up LP, 1997’s Midnight Star, was such a colossal flop that Virgin dropped him from the label, presuming that his hitmaking days were in the past.

Yes, him, again.
Matt Murdock. Daredevil. The subject of our last six get togethers.
But not to worry, we shan’t be talking about him again. Ever. Daredevil #612 was the last part of a four-part story called “The Death of Daredevil.” So that’s it, isn’t it? Daredevil is dead.
I mean, it’s not like Marvel would kill off a character and then bring him or her back to life, is it?
In Daredevil #609, the start of the four-part story, Matt was hit by a truck while saving a kid. I don’t know if it was a Mack truck or a semi with a hemi or even a hemi-demi-semi-quaver, but it was big. Big enough to send Matt to the hospital and to reevaluate his lot in life. Lots.
And Matt decided what he was going to do, if it was the last thing he did, was...

Evelyn “Brandy” Foster, who managed the career of daughter Jodie Foster, died May 13 at her Los Angeles home from complications related to dementia, her family announced. She was 90.
Evelyn Foster also guided the career of her son, Buddy Foster, who starred on the 1968-71 CBS series “Mayberry Rfd” as the son of Ken Berry’s lead character. Foster is also survived by daughters Lucinda and Constance.
“Evelyn was without a doubt the strongest person her family has ever met, a champion, a fighter, full of fire and love,” her family said in a statement. “No one could beat her style, all five feet tall with naturally ‘corkscrew’ hair. Her family will remember those dimple smiles and big hugs and well-placed four-letter words. No one messed with Nana, an original like no other. May she live in all of us forever.”
Foster was raised in Rockford, Ill., and performed as a big band singer.

The thing about Kenny is that he had no ego. There was nothing pushy about him — he was just one of the sweetest souls. I don't think he had any idea how talented he was.
A lot of people only know him from F Troop or Mama's Family, but he was a phenomenal song-and-dance man. He was funny, he was sexy — he was the whole ball of wax.
I first saw him in 1960 when he was doing The Billy Barnes Review. I was on The Garry Moore Show back then, and I told Garry we had to have ...

Ray Cooper, former Virgin Records America Co-President with Ashley Newton — given credit for the worldwide success of the Spice Girls — died on Saturday, July 28, in Guildford, Surrey, England. He was 69 and had been suffering from a rare neurological condition, Progressive Primary Aphasia (Ppa), which also affected Monty Python’s Terry Jones, causing loss of speech.
Virgin Records founder Richard Branson called him “an extraordinary delightful individual and an incredible talent, Virgin Records would never have grown into the music force it became without him.”
Cooper was originally named to the post with Newton in September 1997, after the departure of Virgin President/CEO Phil Quartararo, who left to join Warner Bros. Records. The two came over from Virgin U.K., which they led to the third-largest music group in Britain.
Cooper was one of the first of a wave of U.K. execs who made their way to the U.S.

When it comes to Julie Andrews' health, she knows better than anyone that just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. The 82-year-old singer and actress — known for her timeless roles in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and of course, her illustrious Broadway career — has been outspoken about her health ever since undergoing vocal chord surgery in 1997. When she awoke from the surgery — the goal of which was to remove noncanerous nodules from her vocal chords — her gorgeous singing voice was all but destroyed. "If it had happened earlier, it would have been really devastating," she once told People of her trauma. "As it was, it was devastating." Julie posing with Ken Berry. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "I thought at the time [of the surgery], my voice was what I am. But it seems it's not all that I am," the actress, who went on to star and sing...

By any standard, The Andy Griffith Show was not an easy act to follow. After all, it became one of the most popular shows throughout its run in the 1960s, and grew even bigger over the decades thanks to reruns and the nostalgia factor. But what’s truly amazing is that series star Andy Griffith decided to leave the show after eight seasons, and instead of simple cancellation, it evolved into the series Mayberry R.F.D., which was essentially the same show, but without Sheriff Andy Taylor or his son, Opie. Instead, the focus shifted to widower farmer (eventually head of the town council) Sam Jones, raising his son, Mike, and they were surrounded by all the regular supporting characters of Mayberry — including Aunt Bee. Amazingly it worked, much of it because of actor Ken Berry, who stepped in as Sam. "Andy and Don Knotts had had an oral agreement that...

In their continuing mission to act as publisher for every possible Japanese video game that at least one person in North America wants to play, Xseed Games has announced that Killer is Dead is far from the only title that they are bringing to the West in 2013.
First up on Xseed’s lineup is the release of Ys I & II Chronicles+ for Windows PCs sometime this month. Far from simple ports of the first two games, these will be “enhanced remakes” of the classic games that also mark the franchises’ first appearance on Steam.
Next up Xseed plans to fulfill the wishes of every Wii owner who signed on for Operation Rainfall, and bring Pandora’s Tower to North America. The company didn’t reveal exactly how widespread the release for the localized Wii game will be, but it is set to launch on March 26, 2013 for $39.99.

One of the most fascinating aspects of our podcast is watching the struggle within the Walt Disney Company to blend reality and fantasy. From the beginning, Disney had stated that he wanted movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to be perceived as films for adults, as opposed to films for children or families. I’m always heartened to see that comment brought up in modern conversation, because the stigma that animation is specifically for children hasn’t ever dissipated in popular culture. What frustrates me is the film Disney refers to, and how it became a template of sorts for the animators and filmmakers who work at the Walt Disney Company.

Chicago – Say or sing “I’m so glad we had this time together…” and persons of a certain generation will immediately respond, “…just to have a laugh or sing a song.” The theme to the “The Carol Burnett Show” is indelibly etched in show business memory, and Time Life Video is taking advantage of those days with the DVD release of “The Carol Burnett Show: Carol’s Favorites.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
This is a supposed compilation of Carol Burnett’s favorites episodes, in their entirety, as if we were settling down to watch an episode so many Saturday nights ago. This is advantageous to get a feel for how the show was presented in that era of television, but it also demands patience through a lot of throwaway gags and songs – remember when Vicki Lawrence had a chart topping singing career? Remember driving a Ford Frick? This is a different kind of TV sketch comedy,...

*****
Some films acquire a bad reputation that sticks like a bad smell, driving potential viewers away before they ever see it. Everyone knows that Alien³ and Alien Resurrection are terrible even especially those who have never seen the film. This fate happens particularly to notorious bombs – especially to films that (temporarily) kill off franchises. There is a perverse feedback loop in place, the film bombed because no one went to see it, and since the film bombed it must be terrible, so no one wants to watch it.
But this is confusing quality with popularity. They can be linked, but films bombing may result from any number of factors...

“The first rule of all drive-in sequels: make the same damn movie you made the first time!”
-Joe Bob Briggs
Herbie Rides Again stands proudly alongside Halloween III: Season of the Witch as the two films that most deliberately break the sequel rule. It is debatable which is more cruel. Halloween III has no Michael Myers (and for that matter no witches) but never explains why. No doubt many in the audience when it was first released must have been wondering when Michael Myers was going to show, right up until the moment the film ended.
While discarding most of what made the first film work: Dean Jones as racer Jim Douglas,...
