Do audiences ever ask for a History Lesson? Robert Altman gives them a smart, if diffuse, image of America as a showbiz invention, commercialized and packaged. Paul Newman is the prepackaged white hero surrounded by a jolly circus; Buffalo Bill’s trick seems to be to get his colleagues, the dispossessed minorities and especially the vanquished Native Americans to cooperate with his self-aggrandizing fantasy. One of Altman’s better scattershot ensembles sketches an amusingly hollow Buffalo Bill in Paul Newman, but the director’s style keeps emotional involvement at arm’s length… make that telephoto lens’ length.

One of country music's cutest couples is officially married! Carly Pearce and Michael Ray exchanged vows Sunday evening in a romantic ceremony right outside of Nashville, People confirms. Family, close friends and even a few country music stars watched the Grand Ole Opry's Bill Cody perform the ceremony. And now, it's officially time to party! "Michael and I were together last night and we were like, 'This is really crazy because it snuck up on us so fast.' We have been engaged for nine months and we are like, 'Oh my gosh, it's here,'" Carly previously shared with Taste of Country when discussing her special day. "Our wedding is very much going to be for immediate...

The blending of two disparate but popular film genres – in this case, the horror/sci-fi film with the saddle opera - was hardly new when The Valley of Gwangi hit the big screen in 1969. This film’s most identifiable predecessor, one pitting cowboys against a prehistoric monster, might be The Beast of Hollow Mountain (1956), but truth be told Hollywood had been combining these two genres almost from the very beginning. In the 1930s and ‘40s, audiences thrilled to the ghostly monochrome exploits of such western serial heroes as Ken Maynard, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Buster Crabbe with such films as Tombstone Canyon (1932), The Vanishing Riders (1935), and Wild Horse Phantom (1944). Universal’s Curse of the Undead (1959) was a later but no less interesting experiment for Hollywood’s preeminent fright factory. The studio removed the vampire from the usual atmospheric Gothic trappings of old Europe and dropped him onto the sagebrush plain.

Lacco Ameno, Ischia, Italy -- Franco Nero, whose interpretation of the brooding, sharp-shooting title character in Sergio Corbucci's 1966 Spaghetti Western classic Django inspired more than two dozen spinoffs, says he's starting work on a new film explaining the final chapter in the character's life. Speaking on the sidelines of the Ischia Global Film & Music Fest, Nero told The Hollywood Reporter the new film will be set in 1915, in the early days of cinema when heroes of the Old West -- like real-life cowboy heroes Wyatt Erp and "Buffalo" Bill Cody -- worked as consultants for western-themed films

Nashville, Tenn. -- Darius Rucker's surprise invitation to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry is a moment he says he will always cherish – and now fans will be able to share the experience with him over and over again.
The singer, who rose to fame as the frontman for South Carolina rockers Hootie & The Blowfish, began pursuing his lifelong passion for country music a few years ago. Now he is the video host for one of two new tours that have been added to the Opry's backstage tour line-up.
The tours are the "VIP Behind The Opry Curtain Tour" and the "Opry House Post-Show Tour," which Rucker hosts.
"They're going to get to relive that night, and that moment" he was asked to join the Opry, said Rucker, who was inducted shortly after the invitation last October. "But they're also going to see some other great things behind the scenes.

Brooks Barnes at the New York Times posted a puff piece yesterday, pretending to explore John Lasseter's response to the critical reception to Cars 2. Lasseter gives the pat "I don't read reviews" response while Barnes seems to believe most of the criticism of Cars 2 had something to do with Pixar's recent trend of sequel-izing their films and critics simply sharpening their knives, ready to pounce. While I wasn't one of the people that disliked Cars 2, I got a different impression from the rash of negativity, and Lasseter opens the door to one particular real issue with not only Cars 2, but all big budget films coming out of Hollywood, in a comment Barnes never even addresses. In the closing of the piece Lasseter responds to being asked whether the negative reviews hurt him by saying, "I make movies for that little boy who loves the characters...

Andy Serkis as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Photo: 20th Century Fox Rise of the Planet of the Apes features what looks to be some astonishing special effects from Weta digital as they have extended the techniques employed in Avatar. Weta has taken things a step further in what appears to be a photo-realistic portrayal of Serkis playing the film's lead ape, Caesar, and over at the Hollywood Reporter Carolyn Giardina has taken this opportunity to ask whether Serkis's motion-captured performance will be able to score the actor a Best Actor Oscar nomination, an honor, she says, "eluded him ten years ago when he played the tragic creature Gollum in The Lord of the Rings."
The article appears to be more of an editorial shedding light on Weta's work and performance capture in general, but Giardina's attention-grabbing headline seems to have overshadowed the piece's intention. The...

Back in February news that Justin Lin (Fast Five) had been attached to direct a potential new Terminator feature at Universal popped up as Arnold Schwarzenegger left office as California's governor and word was that he may be interested in returning to the franchise that made him a mega-star.
One week later our very own Bill Cody offered five suggestions for Arnie's post-gubernatorial career. One of those five was "Don't do another Terminator film."
A little over two months later and Bill's suggestion has apparently fallen on deaf ears as Deadline's Mike Fleming reports a package is being shopped at studios as I type for a new Terminator film with Justin Lin directing, Robert Cort (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure) producing and Arnold starring. And apparently Universal, Sony and Lionsgate are looking hard at the package.
If you ask me, I don't see how this could possibly work. The soon-to-be...

In the same article in W Magazine that brought us out first look at the lead character in director David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo he offered up a couple of quotes regarding the critical praise of his latest, Oscar front-runner, The Social Network. "I hate the awards part of the moviemaking process," he continued. "And besides, on Social Network, I didn't really agree with the critics' praise. It interested me that Social Network was about friendships that dissolved through this thing that promised friendships, but I didn't think we were ripping the lid off anything. The movie is true to a time and a kind of person, but I was never trying to turn a mirror on a generation." [...]

I finally see Tron: Legacy next Monday, which means I am one of the last people on the planet to see it as screenings have been held all over and critics from all over have seen and reviewed it. RopeofSilicon's own, Bill Cody, already saw it and attended the press junket and will have more to offer in the future, but I told him not to tell me a thing about what he thought. I've done my very best to avoid any reviews or talk of the film in hope of going in absolutely fresh, and that includes trailers as well as the video below.
Soundworks Collection has once again offered up a sound featurette for the new film featuring sound re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo, supervising sound editor Gwen Yates Whittle and sound designer Steve Boeddeker. This isn't a film that will be up for Best PIcture Oscar, but I...

If "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" died at the box office this past August, it's enjoying the heavenly embrace of its true fans now. During election season, one of the fiercest campaigns waged hasn't been led by any political candidate, but rather the cast and crew of "Scott Pilgrim" who have gone far beyond the call of duty to restore honor to Edgar Wright's gloriously insane adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel with a barnstorming tour of the country that began in Los Angeles last month at the New Beverly Cinema where everyone from star Michael Cera to director Edgar Wright showed up for the film's first official midnight screening and will continue at a free screening the Bloor Cinema in Toronto on Friday, sold out dates at the Brattle Theatre in Boston this Saturday (where the 7:30 show is not yet sold out) and the Village...

This weekend Seattle, Wa will be invaded by a large group of "Achievers" when the Lebowski Fest makes its annual trek to the Pacific Northwest. On Friday night there will be a screening of the now classic Coen Brothers' film The Big Lebowski in a large rock and roll venue, followed by a first come first serve bowling party on Saturday night, October 16.
If you don't know about the Lebowski Fest, you should. This is the eighth year of the Festival. It started out as a party in Lexington, Kentucky then grew into a traveling road show that includes stops in numerous cities including New York (this year's fest features a performance by the band Diamondhead featuring Moby), Philadelphia, DC, Boston, Orlando, the UK and Los Angeles where the Lebowski Fest annually sells out Wiltern Theater and it's 2,300 seats for a raucous screening of the film.

Photo: Fox Searchlight One film we keep hearing about is Gravity, the sci-fi survival thriller from Alfonso Cauron (Children of Men) that has now twice been turned down by Angelina Jolie. The difficulty in putting the film into motion has been finding a suitable replacement for Jolie because, while Robert Downey Jr. has committed to a supporting role, the picture is going to have to be carried by the lead actress.
Gravity centers on a woman who is the sole survivor of a doomed space mission attempting to return home to her daughter. The role, which has been compared to that of Tom Hanks in Cast Away, requires the actress to be the lone on-screen character for much of the film. Sam Rockwell wonderfully handled a similar role in last year's Moon, but unlike that film, Gravity is not a small independent production. Cuaron himself...
