In the world of Medusa Deluxe, beauticians wield scissors like knives and hairsprays like pistols. Hairstyling competitions are fraught spaces stacked with talented participants. Anyone can tame an unruly mane, but only a handful can turn it into a work of art.
“I’m in the middle of a Georgian fontange,” one stylist snaps in the opening scene of Thomas Hardiman’s exciting directorial debut. “You can’t just walk away from that shit.” Tensions are high in this dressing room. Outside the door, police patrol the hall. Sirens blare in the distance. The death of Mosca (John Alan Roberts), one of the stylists, has paused the competition and forced a temporary lockdown.
The atmosphere is thick with suspicion. This is a cutthroat bunch, a community whose members convene annually to flaunt their skills and prove themselves. There are public alliances and private allegiances. Betrayals abound, too. Everyone has a theory.

There’s been a scalping at a Northern England hairdressing competition.
It’s all any of the hairdressers — “hair artists” might be a better description, given the towering Marie Antoinette-level coifs and rainbow-colored cascades and expertly sculpted geometric ‘dos they’ve designed — can talk about. The victim is Mosca, the presumed frontrunner before being found dead and mutilated. No one’s canceled the event, however, and his peers are prepping their models for the runway. The show must go on.
As for the suspects — well, where do we start?...

Few, if any, single-shot movies ever justify the conceit. In fact, most of them do their material a disservice through the distraction that emerges naturally from the trickery. In other words, audiences are often put into the position of looking for the seams in the filmmaking, on the hunt for evidence of the artifice. In the case of writer-director Thomas Hardiman’s Medusa Deluxe, though, artifice is the entire raison d’être.
Set within the backstages of a cutthroat hairdressing competition, the film opens with a riled-up Cleve (played with dazzling fire by Clare Perkins) recounting the story’s inciting incident while fussing over a disgruntled model’s coif. Stylist Mosca (John Alan Roberts), presumed to be heavy competition, has not only been discovered dead, but also scalped. The remaining contestants are now sheltering in place and turbo-gossiping about who his presumed murderer could possibly be. At the same time,...

Elaborate braids, teased curls, and brightly colored dye all mix together at the hands of talented hairstylists prepping their models for an annual hair competition. Similar to the beautiful intricacies of hair styling, writer/director Thomas Hardiman weaves through an intriguing murder mystery with the audience at his mercy. An arresting and visually stunning achievement, “Medusa Deluxe” breaks the framework on storytelling and sheds the skin of a subculture in the process.

In “Medusa Deluxe,” the serpents aren’t in the hair, but all around it: a writhing, hissing collective of human predators slinking around the various parlors and platforms of a high-level hairdressing competition. Most are venomous, and at least one is deadly, or so it seems when a star stylist is found, not just murdered but quite literally scalped, the night before his widely expected victory in the contest. That’s the setup for British writer-director Thomas Hardiman’s splashy, hooky debut feature “Medusa Deluxe,” an arch, gossip-fueled murder mystery that delights more in rounding up its many unusual suspects than in any kind of logical, procedural detective work: Whodunnit isn’t a pressing question in a film where everyone is 100 that bitch.

Though famously ambivalent about film adaptations of his work — to the degree of never watching some — Alan Moore has written a screen original in “The Show,” perhaps attracted to a more hands-on approach to the medium now that he’s officially retired from comics. This playfully wayward mystery set in his native Northampton turns that burg into a kind of midlands Gotham, where not-quite-superheroic intrigue unfolds as convolutedly as possible. Fun if perhaps a little too tongue-in-cheek for its own good, the results will no doubt appeal most to Moore fans who’ll revel in his Byzantine plotting, noirish tropes and other signature elements. Fathom Events is providing them one-night U.S. theatrical access this Thursday, Aug. 26; release in other formats is as yet unannounced.
“The Show” is directed by Mitch Jenkins, a photographer who’s collaborated with the “Watchmen” scribe for 12 years, including on several shorts that introduced some of its characters and ideas.

"We've saved you the best seat in the house..." Shout Factory has released a new official US trailer for the strange, eccentric, indie film titled The Show, directed by filmmaker Mitch Jenkins. This premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year, and we featured an early teaser trailer back then. A man's search for a stolen artifact leads him to the haunted town ("Northampton - a strange and haunted town in the heart of England as dangerous as he is") filled with Voodoo gangsters, masked adventurers, Depression-era private eyes and violent chiaroscuro women. From the mind of writer Alan Moore comes a new feature film starring Tom Burke (seen in The Souvenir), Siobhan Hewlett, Alan Moore (oh yes), Ellie Bamber, Darrell D'Silva, Richard Dillane, Christopher Fairbank, and Sheila Atim. Welcome to The Show. I'm still not sure what to make of it, and this new trailer doesn't really help much.

Alan Moore has often seen his iconic comic book creations—be it Watchmen, V for Vendetta or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen—get adapted as big screen efforts that typically end up being the focus of his own critical wrath, but an upcoming passion project film, bearing the deceptively-generic title, The Show, will likely avoid that fate, since he not only penned the script, but actually fields an onscreen role.
Mitch Jenkins directed The Show off Moore’s script, continuing behind-camera work he did for three shorts from Moore’s 2014 anthology fantasy film, Show Pieces, to which this film bears a thematic connection, and similarly features Moore’s onscreen reverie-riding character named Frank Metterton. Check out the trailer for The Show just below.

Cult comic book writer Alan Moore, best known for "Watchmen" and "V for Vendetta," has just debuted the first film he has scripted, a 30-minute short called "Jimmy's End." Like a lost fantasy sequence from "Twin Peaks," "Jimmy's End" sees James/Jimmy (Darrell D'Silva) explore a fantastic afterlife of burlesque dancers and thugs. The film, directed by Mitch Jenkins, features music by Andy Broder (Fog), Adam Drucker (doseone) and Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio). Several of Moore's works have been made into films; "V for Vendetta," "Watchmen," "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" and "From Hell" are all based on Moore's work, though he has what can generously be described as a complicated relationship with the adaptations and has publicly distanced himself from them. The film is a part of Vice Magazine's Motherload.tv YouTube channel. Check it out...

It's well documented that Alan Moore has little or no time for any of the Hollywood movies that have been adapted from his iconic graphic novels, from V for Vendetta and Watchmen all the way through to Stephen Norrington's 2003 The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. While anyone who has watched the last film may sympathise with the Northampton-based writer, Moore has often seemed deliberately reactionary when it comes to other people's appropriation of his work. Zack Snyder's bravura 2009 take on Watchmen, in particular, grips limpet-like to Moore's original style and narrative, yet received the same scorn as its siblings.

Executives at Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) have delayed the opening of their latest production after the lead actor was "seriously" injured by a prop firearm.
Antony and Cleopatra is due to launch in Stratford-upon-Avon, England on 20 April but opening night has been pushed back until 10 May after Darrell D'Silva hurt his hand when a fake gun misfired.
The incident occurred earlier this month, and D'Silva has undergone surgery and returned to rehearsals - but theatre bosses have decided to postpone the show until he has fully recovered.
A statement issued by the RSC reveals the star sustained a "serious injury to his hand from the mechanism of a prop firearm" during technical rehearsals.
RSC artistic director Michael Boyd adds, "I am very pleased Darrell is making a good recovery. He has shown great grit in returning to the show so quickly after a serious injury. But he is still in a sling and playing through pain. We have restaged much of the show to accommodate a one-armed Antony, and have lost a great deal of rehearsal time, so I have taken the decision to postpone our scheduled press night.
"Obviously it's not a decision to be taken lightly, but I would like to give the company the chance to showcase the production to critics when Darrell has had a little more recovery time. We do take health and safety very seriously and, of course, have instigated a full investigation into what happened."...
