Irony dwells in the bones of "Merrily We Roll Along," a musical that plays backward in time. The 1981 sinking of the original Broadway production of "Merrily We Roll Along" is a chaos best told by the documentary "Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened." The critics and audience were reportedly baffled by the reverse chronological storytelling and director Hal Prince's purposefully amateurish methodology, which casts high schoolers and young adults playing fortysomethings aging down to twentysomethings. It closed down after 44 previews and 16 performances. The loss demoralized the creatives so much that lyricist-composer Stephen Sondheim and Prince — mavericks who birthed successes like "Company" and "Sweeney Todd" — halted their collaboration for years. This short-lived run underscores the musical's themes: friendships breaking up and showbiz realities thwarting artistic plans.
Away from Prince's high-schoolish shell, major productions have repackaged "Merrily." This material also turned out to be a fitting endeavor for filmmaker Richard Linklater,...

Richard Linklater took inspiration from the musical numbers in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie.”
The “Hitman” writer-director revealed to NME that he saw the billion-dollar movie multiple times.
“I liked the musical numbers,” Linklater said. “I liked the movie a lot. It’s worth seeing a couple times.”
He added, “The best thing that happened to cinema in a while is ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie.’ Sends a good message. I’m glad those are doing well.”
Linklater is currently working on a musical himself, with the decades-spanning adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along.” The film stars Paul Mescal as a Broadway composer who leaves his theater pals (Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein) to pursue becoming a Hollywood producer.

Paul Mescal is ready to face his next two decades alongside director Richard Linklater.
Mescal is starring in Linklater’s adaptation of “Merrily We Roll Along,” which will be filmed over 20 years, similar to how Linklater shot coming-of-age movie “Boyhood.” The film is an adaptation of the beloved Stephen Sondheim musical, which itself was an adaptation of a Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.
“Merrily We Roll Along” follows three friends pursuing careers in the entertainment industry and how their lives change as they age; the story is famously told in reverse chronological order. Mescal is cast as composer Franklin Shepard, with Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein playing the other two friend characters.
“I think I’m going to spend the next 20 years regretting choices that I made in some sequences,” Mescal told Esquire UK, “and then forgetting about others and being like, ‘Oh, fuck! We shot that in 2035!’ That’s crazy.

Barbra Streisand recently reiterated critical comments surrounding Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, saying that his take on the story was the “wrong” one.
“I thought it was the wrong idea,” the 79-year-old icon said in a Sunday appearance on Australian talk show, The Sunday Project. “Look, it was a big success. I can’t argue with success. But I don’t care so much about success as I do originality.”
A Star Is Born originated as a 1937 film from David O. Selznick, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. Moss Hart adapted it in 1954, with Judy Garland and James Mason starring, with a third version, directed by Frank Pierson, released in 1976.
Streisand was, of course, personally invested in A Star Is Born, given that she starred alongside Kris Kristofferson in the most recent adaptation, prior to Cooper’s.

Filmmaker Richard Linklater has long been admittedly “pretty slow on the TV thing,” as he once said at the Television Critics Association panels back in 2017. However, he’s coming to the small screen with a nonfiction project for CBS All Access, as announced today at the winter TCA event. The streamer has given a series order for “The Untitled Richard Linklater Project,” a docuseries executive-produced by Linklater and documentary filmmaker Bill Guttentag, both of whom are Oscar winners.
The 10-episode series, per CBS, “takes place in and around Austin, Texas, Linklater’s hometown, and will provide a window onto the colorful and diverse world of animal rescue through moving, humorous and powerful stories of animals and the humans who love them.” His last TV foray was the 2012 Hulu travel series “Up to Speed.”

Richard Linklater set an unusual precedent when the 2014 film Boyhood came out. It was a film he had worked on for twelve years, telling the story of a boy, his sister, his parents, and the world around him. It was a great movie, and the most interesting part was how he chose to tell the story. Instead of casting multiple people to play each role, or use makeup to age an adult in the film, he simply shot the film over a twelve year period. So when it was all said and done, you watched those characters grow upon the screen. It was really cool. It’s more of a gamble to do a film this way, but I think it’s a pretty cool payoff with the end result. He’s now taking on a project with the same format, but this time, it’s even more ambitious.

Director Richard Linklater broke ground with his 2014 coming-of-age film “Boyhood,” which unfolded across 12 years, filming every year, and went on to be nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Produced by longtime Linklater collaborator Ginger Sledge, and possibly with the involvement of producer Jason Blum and Blumhouse, the film will be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-nominated stage musical “Merrily We Roll Along.” Sondheim’s 1981 musical is based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and it takes place across 20 years, with sources saying that Linklater will maintain fidelity to that timeline.

Let it be known 20 years from now, when climate change has set upon the world murderous heat, flooded cities, famine, mass displacement, and a religious fervor the likes of which were unseen since the plague, that on August 29, 2019, someone typed “Richard Linklater, you crazy motherfucker.” One-upping just about any time-based cinematic experiment, he’s set himself the task of adapting Stephen Sondheim’s 20-year-spanning Merrily We Roll Along in an insanely literal manner, filming a segment every year for the next, well, you get the idea. [Collider]
Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! lead Blake Jenner will star as Franklin Shepard, a Hollywood film producer whose former life as a Broadway composer we follow in bits and pieces; Beanie Feldstein is to play Mary Flynn, his best friend and a theater critic; and Ben Platt will play Charley Kringas, Frank’s former best friend and lyricist. In my over-confident, thoroughly wrong pre-event analysis of the nominations for Sunday’s Writers Guild awards, I drew an analogy between screenwriters and architects, the first providing blueprints for movies and the second for buildings. I had in mind bigger buildings than “Eighth Grade” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
I was thinking of towering, or mini-towering, achievements — “Roma” in the original screenplay category won by “Eighth Grade,” and “BlackKlansman” or “A Star is Born” or “Black Panther” for the adapted category won by “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Both wins last night were shockers, but Bo Burnham’s win for “Eighth Grade” is the kind that brings down. . .oh yeah, big buildings. Neither the screenplay nor the movie is nominated for an Oscar and that hasn’t happened with a WGA winner since Steve Martin won for the 1987 “Roxanne.”
Its failure with academy voters is why I discounted “Eighth Grade”‘s chances,...

Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” has been named the best adapted screenplay of 2018 by the Writers Guild of America, while Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade” was named the year’s best original screenplay in a surprising upset over Oscar Best Picture and screenplay nominees “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice.”
“Eighth Grade” is not even nominated for the original-screenplay Oscar, making it the first WGA screenplay winner not to be nominated for the Oscar since Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003.
While “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” is an Oscar screenplay nominee, it was not nominated for Best Picture and was competing against three films that had been nominated in that category — “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “A Star Is Born” — plus “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Thus, Oscar nominee “The Favourite” was not eligible at WGA as this foreign production did not go through the lengthy process of proving its eligibility.

When Eric Roth was approached to work on A Star Is Born, his response wasn’t one of excitement, but of fear. “This had been done a lot of times, and I didn’t know whether I could crack the code to make it special and modern,” the screenwriter says. “The fear was trying to do it again, [and] whether anybody was really interested anymore.”
The fourth iteration of a classic screen story, pairing a starlet on the rise with a more established hand for a transcendent, challenging romance, the film started out in the hands of Clint Eastwood, who had his own take in mind. Eventually, Eastwood left the project, though his co-writer Will Fetters remained behind, to help Bradley Cooper script his feature debut. Then came Roth—an Oscar winner behind Benjamin Button and Forrest Gump—who read the pair’s draft and was direct in expressing his thoughts.

Last fall’s audience-pleaser is indeed a pleasant surprise, not because it’s a classic but because it isn’t plain awful. An unnecessary third remake of a Depression-era Cinderella story has been concocted to showcase the special talents of Lady Gaga, who indeed comes off as the most personable and deserving star-to-be-born since Judy Garland. Bradley Cooper stunned the industry by wearing almost all the creative hats on this thing — and producing an entertainment that will enhance the careers of all involved.

“A Star Is Born” has always been a great talent vehicle, including the new Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga version, which Warner Bros. opened Oct. 5. Previous versions showcased big-name talent, but there’s also a stellar lineup of people who almost made the film but didn’t, including Cary Grant, Cher, Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, Beyoncé Knowles and, behind the cameras, Mike Nichols, Quincy Jones and Clint Eastwood.
The new film is officially the fourth version, but it’s sort of the fifth. In 1932, Rko made “What Price Hollywood?” about an L.A. waitress who becomes a movie star while her alcoholic mentor declines. In the July 19, 1932, review, Variety shrugged, “It’s a fan magazine interpretation of Hollywood.” Five years later, Selznick Intl. Pictures’ “A Star Is Born” had so many similarities that Rko considered suing.
Each version added an innovation: Technicolor in 1937, musical numbers for the 1954 Judy Garland film,...

Hollywood’s allure, insatiable ambition, and the price of fame are at the center of one of the most oft-told stories in show-biz history: “A Star Is Born.” The latest edition, with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, is the fourth to be made, and the third to be music-centric. Variety has already written many articles about that one, which is released today — read Owen Gleiberman’s review here — but how do the previous renditions stack up?

There's a proverb that says, "you can't take it with you," popularized by playwrights George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart in their 1936 Pulitzer Prize-winning production of the same name. Steve Ross I Remember Him Well: The Songs of Alan Jay Lerner Birdland Jazz Club, NYC Monday, January 22, 2018
Lerner who?
Getting serious for a moment, this is the fact around which we will orbit: What really constitutes American culture? Literature and architecture and painting -- yes, certainly. But what particularly animates our hearts is song -- and, in particular, the living energy of the American musical theater. In that buoyant realm, there’s no greater literate master than lyricist and writer Alan Jay Lerner (1918-1986). The open-and-shut-case evidence for this assertion is his CV: On A Clear Day, Brigadoon, Gigi, Paint Your Wagon, An American In Paris (story and screen play), Camelot, and -- most famously, My Fair Lady.
Watching our black and white TV, as a child I noticed my parents (and the studio audience) were delighted by a singer I’d never heard of. I could not understand the big to-do about him.
