It’s not news that Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic character Tony Stark is widely considered one of the most powerful and, well, egoistic characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While his extraordinary smarts are what set him apart from every other superhero, the lifestyle he leads and the personality he sports — especially at the beginning of his tenure — further contributed to it.

However, while he manages to turn into a softie in the later events of his story arc in the Cinematic Universe, especially around Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, he does set his ego aside for one other Marvel character as well.
In fact, not only this but on closer observation, one would realize that he actually even breaks his rule for this very character too: Howard Stark, i.e. Tony’s dad.

Christopher Nolan’s biopic thriller Oppenheimer dominated the box office last year, and the film has been praised for its compelling storyline and incredible portrayal of the father of the atomic bomb. Fans should know that this is not Nolan’s first rodeo when it comes to adapting the life of a real person on the big screen.
Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer / Universal Pictures
He has written a script long ago on the life of aviator Howard Hughes, but the project did not get off the ground because he was beaten to it by fellow veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The latter directed 2004’s The Aviator starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

While Oppenheimer was Christopher Nolan’s first biographical drama to hit the big screens, this wasn’t the Oscar-winner’s first time penning a script surrounding a real-life figure. Before changing the superhero landscape with The Dark Knight, the director had plans to make a biopic about the American aerospace engineer Howard Hughes, for which he even wrote a script.
But as the story goes, Nolan’s passion project never materialized as before the director could make his pitch, Martin Scorsese was already working on Hughes’ biopic, The Aviator. However, it wasn’t all in vain for Nolan, as his experience working on the script for his Howard Hughes biopic came in handy while penning Oppenheimer.

Speaking of the unmade biopic, Christopher Nolan deemed his script for the canned project the best he’d ever written.

Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" best handled the topic of choice.
Dark Matter Season 1 Episode 1 and Dark Matter Season 1 Episode 2 are the latest on this topic.
Duplicate characters existing in separate dimensions is hardly a novel concept on television (or almost any creative medium).
The first such episode featuring a parallel universe was, no shock, on the 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone, "The Parallel." An astronaut returns from a lengthy journey to find his world not quite the same as he remembers it.
Another early example came in 1970 on the soap opera Dark Shadows. Vampire Barnabas Collins found a room in his mansion, Collinwood, a portal he used to escape to parallel time.
This concept was most vital in the 1967 Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror." It was set in a dimension where evil twins of the Star Trek characters lived.
This mirror universe was revisited on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine...

Throughout his extensive career spanning decades, Leonardo DiCaprio has embodied a diverse array of characters, ranging from romantic leads to extreme personas like Hugh Glass in The Revenant. However, there remains one that surprised the actor the most, particularly with his obsessive tendencies.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have collaborated on a number of projects together as actor and director. Beginning their partnership with Gangs of New York, the duo went on to work on films such as The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the recent Killers of the Flower Moon. The duo are also rumored to collaborate again on a Frank Sinatra biopic.
While the two have worked together on many projects, they have also developed projects that have never seen the light of day. One of those was apparently a biographical drama on Alexander, The Great. The two never got to make it, but the duo may have no regrets about it as Colin Farrell’s version of the film ended up almost costing the actor his career.

Drake turned up the heat on Friday, following up the official release of his Kendrick Lamar diss track “Push Ups” from earlier this week with “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which appears to feature AI vocals from Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg.
Late Friday night, April 19, the rapper took to social media to share another scathing rebuke toward Kendrick, and unlike “Push Ups” — which also takes shots at Future, Metro Boomin, Rick Ross, and the Weeknd and drew shots back from Ross and others — this one takes direct aim primarily at Kendrick.

Leonardo DiCaprio turned down perhaps almost as many films as he ended up starring in. There was one feature he was seriously mulling over doing that he decided to pass on for another project.

Ed Ruscha, running late to class one day in 1950, accidentally stiff-armed a glass-panel door at his junior high in Oklahoma City. “My hand went right through that door, all the students looked up, and there I was just dripping with blood,” says Ruscha, sipping a macchiato while seated behind a marble-topped desk in the skylit library of his Culver City studio, a sprawling 9,000-square-foot affair that was previously a movie prop house and before that an aerospace factory for Howard Hughes.
“I had this scar on my wrist for years,” he explains, rolling up the sleeve of an indigo button-down to inspect his left forearm, a rakish smile curling over his lips at the prospect of unearthing some remnants of that lacerating memory. “It’s almost gone by now.”

The annals of unmade Christopher Nolan films are not particularly long. Perhaps one of the legendary projects mentioned in the past was Nolan’s unrealized Howard Hughes project—some brief elements of which he folded into Bruce Wayne’s recluse period in “The Dark Knight Rises.” There was also, at one point in the past, Nolan’s intentions of remaking the surreal 1960s TV series, “The Prisoner,” created by and starring Patrick McGoohan (which is loosely rumored to be among the next projects he is thinking about making post “Oppenheimer”).

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was not only one of the biggest movies that came out in 2023 but it was also one of the movies that managed to sweep the most during the award season. Oppenheimer won the Best Picture award at the 96th Academy Awards held on March 10th, 2024 along with Nolan winning the Best Director award.
Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer became the third highest-grossing movie of 2023. One of the most significant things about Oppenheimer is the alternative scenes between colored and black and white to convey the story from both subjective and objective perspectives. Now, fans are curious about Nolan’s next big project and according to reports, it’s the one he left behind in 2009.

Paul Giamatti turned the tables on Leonardo DiCaprio when Oscar nominations were announced, with Giamatti nominated for Best Actor for “The Holdovers” while DiCaprio was snubbed for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” But 19 years ago it was the other way around.
SEETop 20 Oscar snubs of performers: Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Willem Dafoe …
In 2004 the Oscar lineup for Best Actor consisted of Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”), and the eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”). Someone who was notably absent that year was Giamatti for “Sideways.”
Prior to the nominations announcement DiCaprio was recognized at every major precursor for his performance as Howard Hughes, a real-life filmmaker, pilot and businessman, in Martin Scorsese‘s “The Aviator.” Among those plaudits, he won the Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actor. The movie itself received 13 Oscar noms overall, including DiCaprio’s Best Actor bid.

Leonardo DiCaprio, once again, missed out on an Oscar nomination.
But that comes as no surprise.
DiCaprio’s portrayal of easily-led naiveté and of greed blotting out love helps to set the tone of last year’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” just as his vexed internal conflict drives “The Departed” forward and his headlong passion launched a million “Titanic” fans.
It’s hard to feel bad for DiCaprio — who, first of all, is among the world’s most famous (and famously high-living) celebrities, and, what’s more, did indeed finally get his trophy. After an aggressive campaign that leaned hard on the notion that he’d been pushed to the edge of safety, and, perhaps, sanity in “The Revenant,” he picked up his award.
And while his derring-do and his survival instincts in that film were indeed a feat, they weren’t what DiCaprio does best. This makes him...

Michael Mann is one of the top directors in Hollywood, long used to calling his own shots. When Joe Roth was running Disney Motion Pictures, he asked Mann if his “60 Minutes” expose “The Insider” with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino (1999) would make money. “Probably not,” Mann said. Roth made it anyway. It wasn’t a hit ($60 million worldwide), but it scored seven Oscar nominations, including Picture, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. Like many of Mann’s movies, it also gained stature over time.
But for all of Mann’s classic films, there are as many movies that didn’t get made in his oeuvre. It takes a lot for him to decide that he should expend the time and energy to go forward with a project, partly because his standards of performance are so high. For example, after directing four movies with high degrees of difficulty in a row Mann...

Ready your rocket pack and dig out your best leather suit – David Oyelowo seems pretty positive about the direction his Rocketeer sequel is going.
David Oyelowo’s follow-up to Disney’s live-action original, The Rocketeer, was first announced in 2021 – and we’ve not heard much about it since. In a recent interview, though, Oyelowo offered a bit of an update on the current state of the project.
“We have forward momentum,” Oyelowo told TheWrap.

Movie stars are a thing of the past, a relic of an era of Hollywood that simply no longer exists. But there are still a few performers who have the draw and the talent to be considered as such. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of them, and his list of achievements looks to grow yet again following the release of his latest project, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The engrossing film, which is based on David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book of the same name, details a series of murders during the 1920s after oil was discovered on Osage land. DiCaprio stars as Ernest Burkhart, the permanently frowning nephew of Robert De Niro’s William Hale, a crime lord masquerading as a friend of the Osage who pulls Ernest into his murderous scheme to steal Osage headrights by having him marry Lily Gladstone’s Mollie Kyle.

Martin Scorsese Honors Robbie Robertson’s Legacy with Tribute Concert: The Musician ‘Broke Barriers’
Martin Scorsese honored late rocker Robbie Robertson with the tribute concert “Robbie Robertson: A Celebration of His Life and Music,” during which the auteur recalled how Robertson’s scores marked a “turning point” in his career.
The private memorial concert was hosted at Village Studios in Los Angeles, with artists Jackson Browne, Rocco Deluca, Angela McCluskey, Blake Mills Group, and Citizen Cope performing. Robertson, the former The Band guitarist, died at age 80 in August 2023. Scorsese first met Robertson during concert documentary film “The Last Waltz” in 1976; the duo collaborated for decades after, with Robertson serving as the music producer and composer on films like “The King of Comedy,” “Silence,” “The Aviator,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and most recently, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
“We kept working together for the next 45 years,” Scorsese said of Robertson scoring “Raging Bull” and adding another working layer to their friendship. “Forty-five years of...

Kate Beckinsale was photographed at Leonardo DiCaprio‘s birthday party in an outfit that has everyone talking!
The 50-year-old actress – who was seen holding hands with her friend, costume designer Gabriella Morpeth – was dressed in a gown from The Blonds that seemingly referenced one of Leonardo‘s famed films!
Keep reading to find out more…
The front of the dress had a huge, sapphire stone on the front, reminiscent of The Heart of the Ocean from 1997′s Titanic. The necklace is a prominent part of the film. It’s a gift to Kate Winslet‘s Rose, and is part of the drawing Leo‘s Jack paints of her in the nude.
The premise of the film also revolves around the necklace, as searchers are scavenging the bottom of the ocean floor at the Titanic’s wreck site to try and find the jewel…while all along, Rose still had it in her possession.

Christopher Nolan’s career rebounded quite nicely after his planned Howard Hughes biopic was scrapped to make way for “The Aviator.” But that doesn’t mean he’s seen Martin Scorsese’s film about the famously eccentric businessman and pilot.
Nolan told Variety that he admitted to “The Aviator” actor Leonardo DiCaprio while collaborating with the Oscar winner on “Inception” that he had never watched Scorsese’s 2004 period piece. “The Aviator” was released by Warner Bros., the studio which Nolan partnered with for close to 20 years.
Nolan’s take on Howard Hughes was expected to cast Jim Carrey, but Nolan had to walk away from the script after Scorsese’s film went into production.
“It was very emotional to not get to make something I’d poured all that into,” Nolan said of the project.
Now, even with Scorsese crediting Nolan among the few filmmakers still preserving the merits of cinema today,...

Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

"I never would've guessed that I'd have won for Best Actor in a Comedy," Leonardo DiCaprio said when he collected his Golden Globe for "The Wolf of Wall Street" in 2014. DiCaprio has played many different roles -- some dramatic, some thrilling, and many that seem to be suffering perpetual panic attacks. In the past decade, however, DiCaprio has started to include levity in that anxiety.
In "Killers of the Flower Moon," DiCaprio plays Ernest, a simple guy and a veteran who falls in love with an Osage woman. But soon enough, Ernest gets involved in a crime ring and a conspiracy to murder Osage members for their money. There are hints of DiCaprio's past performances in Ernest. There's a bit of his anxiety-ridden undercover cop from "The Departed," some of the boyish charm from his earlier roles, and also the in-over-his-head escalation of "The Wolf of Wall Street." He is charming,...

Actor Johnny Depp dove headfirst into the character of Willy Wonka in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and he got his inspiration from watching children’s TV shows.
Depp’s interpretation of Willy Wonka was almost childlike, with some people comparing him to the persona Michael Jackson displayed. Depp, who often embraced character acting, said in this instance, he wanted to model Willy Wonka after someone who spoke to children in somewhat of a “musical” way.
“On this film with Willy Wonka there wasn’t specifically any one or two guys that were models, so to speak, for the character, but there were memories that I have of when I was a little kid of watching children’s shows and children show hosts,” he told IGN.
“And I distinctly remember, even at that age, their speech pattern and their kind of musical quality of the way they’re speaking to the camera,...

Spy Ops Episode 7 ended with the CIA gathering up Taliban fighters to offer them jobs with Afghan intelligence and the military. Gary, the CIA case officer, did everything he could to make sure ex-Taliban fighters were given a chance to be reintroduced into society. The final episode of Spy Ops Season 1 is about a Russian submarine that sank off the western coast of America and how American officials were intrigued by its presence. Will America get a hold of this war machine and unearth some secrets about Russian intelligence?

When a Soviet submarine carrying nuclear warheads sunk into the north Pacific in 1968, the CIA took on a hugely ambitious project to recover it.
To keep it all a secret, the agency enlisted the help of Howard Hughes, who provided the agency cover, the guise being that the deep ocean activity was part of his company’s mining exploration.
The six-year CIA project — called Project Azorian — is one of the episodes of the new Netflix series Spy Ops, which looks at some of the most notorious spy operations in history.
The agency is collaborating with the producer of the series, Big Media, often shedding new light on Cold War-era and more recent operations that involve Argo-like risks and secrecy, while certain details still remain classified.
Other episodes delve into the intrigue surrounding the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, and another in 2001 to sneak a CIA team into...

John Lennon‘s son, Sean Ono Lennon, first saw The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine on television years after its debut. The movie seems to have helped him reach a major epiphany about his father. Subsequently, the film influenced a lot of pop culture, including a television special co-starring David Bowie.

The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine came out in 1968. Sean wasn’t born until 1975. The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. It's been a long road, getting from there to here.
One might recall in June of 2023, it was announced that several key executives and programmers at Turner Classic Movies were callously canned by the new management at their parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. For many, this was tantamount to nixing TCM altogether. CEO David Zaslav made this decision at the end of a string of bad decisions that made him look like the film world's most callous villain. After the weird rebranding of HBO Max to merely Max, it was starting to look like Zaslav didn't give a damn about film history.
It certainly looked that way to Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson, three lovers of vintage film and advocates for the preservation of classics. The trio famously called Zaslav to appeal for the retaining of TCM and the re-hiring of some of their old staff. A...

Among all working U.S. filmmakers, few have built as faithful and fervent a following of critics and cinephiles as Michael Mann. Mann’s acolytes have secured such sleekly hard-boiled genre works as “Thief” and “Heat” a permanent place in the American canon, while staunchly advocating for the merits of more divisive titles like “Blackhat” and “Miami Vice” — the latter, released to mixed reviews and moderate box office in 2006, today attracts reverent crowds at repertory screenings. Such is the power of Mann’s men (and women): At 80, Mann has made just 12 films in a career spanning five decades, but his legacy is wholly secure.
The Academy, however, has never quite joined the cult. Only once has a Mann film connected with a wide swath of Oscar voters: That would be 1999’s scorching Big Tobacco takedown “The Insider,” a box-office disappointment that nonetheless boasted enough artistry and gravitas to land seven nominations,...

"One of the most audacious intelligence operations in history." Greenwich Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Neither Confirm Nor Deny, about a secret mission during the Cold War. It will be available to watch at home coming up in late September. American spies locate a sunken Soviet submarine before the Russians can find it, but get caught in a game of cat and mouse with the press when a journalist discovers their secret. During the Cold War, the CIA secretly raised a sunken Soviet nuclear submarine from the depths of the Pacific Ocean. The six-year operation included an intricate cover story by billionaire Howard Hughes. Drawing on declassified documents and never-before-seen interviews, Philip Carter's doc Neither Confirm Nor Deny tells one of the highest-stakes, yet least known stories of the Cold War. This looks wildly fascinating, especially with these people telling stories of what really happened.

Oscar-winning screenwriter of films including One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Scent of a Woman
In the late 1970s, Bo Goldman was researching a script about Melvin Dummar, the unassuming Utah factory worker, gas station owner and former “Milkman of the Month” who was named as a $156m beneficiary in a will supposedly written by Howard Hughes but later successfully contested in court. Slowly, a realisation dawned on the screenwriter: “This man is a failure just like I am.”
It seemed an unusual conclusion to reach. After all, Goldman had written the book and lyrics for a Broadway musical, First Impressions, based on Pride and Prejudice, before he was 30, and won his first best screenplay Oscar (shared with Lawrence Hauben) for adapting One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), Ken Kesey’s novel set in a psychiatric institution, by the time he was 45.

When Bo Goldman, the two-time Academy Award screenwriter of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Harold and Maude," passed away on July 25, 2023 at the age of 90, the world lost a master dramatist and a razor-sharp observer of human behavior. Hailed by his Hollywood peers as a "screenwriter's screenwriter," Goldman possessed an unerring ear for dialogue and a cliche-eschewing sense of narrative. Be it a wistful satire of the American dream or a bruisingly authentic depiction of divorce, his name on the poster guaranteed an honest, offbeat view of humanity.
And it almost never happened. Goldman was born in the midst of the Great Depression on September 10, 1932. His father owned a chain of department stores that had fallen on hard times, but that didn't stop the besieged patriarch from sending his son to the prestigious likes of Phillips Exeter and Princeton University. Screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for his scripts to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Melvin and Howard” and was among a select group of film scribes including Robert Towne and William Goldman considered to be among that generation’s best, died Tuesday in Helendale, Calif., his son-in-law, director Todd Field, confirmed to the New York Times. He was 90.
Goldman was also Oscar nominated for 1993’s “Scent of a Woman.”
The 1976 Oscar he shared with Lawrence Hauben for co-adapting Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was a particularly impressive achievement considering that “Cuckoo’s Nest” represented only Goldman’s second screenplay and the first to be produced. Bo Goldman, the late-blooming guru of screenwriting who received Academy Awards for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Melvin and Howard, has died. He was 90.
Goldman died Tuesday in Helendale, California, his son-in-law, director Todd Field, told The New York Times.
Goldman’s first screenplay was, years after he wrote it, directed by Alan Parker for Shoot the Moon (1982), which featured Diane Keaton and Albert Finney in a raw, seriocomic drama about a disintegrating marriage.
He also co-wrote the Mark Rydell-directed rock drama The Rose (1979), starring Bette Midler in an Oscar-nominated turn, and Martin Brest’s Scent of a Woman (1992), which netted him his third Academy Award nom (and Al Pacino the best actor Oscar, too).

Christopher Nolan is revisiting his best unmade movie, a Howard Hughes biopic.
The “Oppenheimer” writer-director revealed to The New York Times that he reached “satisfaction” with his shelved script that was overshadowed by Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett. “The Aviator” was released in 2004, with Nolan’s follow-up to 2002’s “Insomnia” instead being “Batman Begins” in 2005.
Now, Nolan is detailing how the scrapped Hughes film inspired the writing process for his other biopic, “Oppenheimer.”
“I wrote the [‘Oppenheimer] script relatively quickly once I started writing, but I had a lot worked out beforehand. Many years ago, I had written a script about the life of Howard Hughes that never got made because I wrote it right as Scorsese was making his own film,” Nolan said. “But I cracked the script to my satisfaction, and that gave me a lot of insight on how to distill...

Few filmmakers stoke the kind of loyalty and obsessive deconstruction as Christopher Nolan does.
Over 12 films and 25 years, he has made head-spinning, intricately constructed journeys into the mind, time, magic and Gotham City. And audiences have been more than happy to go along for the ride. He is one of the few filmmakers working today who can also get hugely expensive, original movies made.
And this week he’s back with his latest film, “Oppenheimer,” a historical epic about J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the man who oversaw the construction of the first nuclear weapon in the waning days of World War II. Full of gorgeous, IMAX-captured imagery and structural ingeniousness, it feels in many ways like the ultimate Nolan movie. That is, of course, until the next Nolan movie.

While “Oppenheimer” has been touted as Christopher Nolan’s first biopic, that’s not necessarily true. It’s only the director’s first biopic to hit the big screen. Decades ago, Nolan wrote the screenplay for a biopic about aviator and business tycoon Howard Hughes, but the project never took flight because Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hughes, beat him to it. Nolan told The Daily Beast in 2007 that his Hughes biopic was the best script he’d written, and he even lined up Jim Carrey to star as Hughes. Nolan said Hughes was the role that Carrey was “born to play.”
Nolan’s Howard Hughes movie never materialized, but learning how to distill the life of an iconic American figure into a movie script would pay off years later when it came time to penning “Oppenheimer.”

When John Lennon’s second son, Sean, was born in 1975, his father had been one of the most famous people in the world for well over a decade. While The Beatles had announced their breakup in 1970, public interest in a reunion hadn’t waned. They were still a globally beloved band. Still, Sean knew very little about this. Lennon explained that he never talked about the band to his son. He never even played their records around the house. Lennon explained the straightforward reason why he avoided the subject.
John Lennon avoided talking about The Beatles around his son
Lennon’s first son, Julian, grew up in the midst of Beatlemania — it was impossible for him not to notice his father’s fame. Sean, however, was born after the band broke up. Lennon said he didn’t see why it was necessary to talk about his former band with his younger child.
