Ever since Steve Rogers decided to hand his shield off to his buddy Sam Wilson (a.k.a. Falcon) at the end of Avengers: Endgame, fans have wondered what was next. We got a Disney+ series that showed Sam’s hesitance to pick up the mantle of Captain America and the history that comes with it. By the end of the series, he knew he was the only person who could take on the role of Captain America. Now, where do we go? It looks like the upcoming story of super heroes and alter egos, Captain America: Brave New World, will tell us when it reaches theatre screens on February 14, 2025.

Marvel Studios has been quiet for a little while, but Kevin Feige and company made a splash at CinemaCon 2024 by showing off several minutes of footage from one of their next big movies.
One of the most astonishing things about the 15-year-long cultural phenomenon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that they managed to get a mass audience to care about limp characters like Thor and Captain America. As a comics reader in the 1990s, I recall that those who read Thor and Captain America books were snickered at; the X-Men, Batman, Spider-Man, and the then-rising Image Comics characters were considered way cooler. Thanks to the MCU, however, Captain America (previously played by Chris Evans) was now hip, and his movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is often vaunted -- rather debatably -- as one of the best films in the long-running series.

Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.
In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

Like most areas of the entertainment industry outside of acting, casting and costuming, television writing was generally one big boys club until women began making (incremental) inroads during the 1990s. There were trailblazers like "I Love Lucy" scribe Madelyn Pugh, but that trail was walked far too infrequently for far too many years.
Anyone who possessed a conscience knew this was unacceptable, which is why it's disappointing that a politically progressive (particularly for his era) writer like Rod Serling never made a concerted effort to work at least one female writer into "The Twilight Zone" mix during the series' five seasons (which stretched from 1959 to 1964). To be fair, Serling did adapt the work of women for certain episodes; in fact, a tale that many consider the show's finest half-hour, "Time Enough at Last," was based on a short story by sci-fi/fantasy writer Lynn Venable. But he never managed to...

George Harrison was the most spiritual member of The Beatles and tried to incorporate his faith into his everyday life. Over the course of his career, both with The Beatles and as a solo artist, Harrison wrote songs about his spirituality. He was not behind one of The Beatles’ songs that he thought was good publicity for God, though.
George Harrison said this Beatles song was spiritual
In 1967, The Beatles released “All You Need Is Love.” John Lennon wrote the song after their manager, Brian Epstein, informed the band that they were to appear on the Our World broadcast. This was the first-ever live, multinational broadcast and allowed the band to get their new song to millions of listeners. They recorded the song in the studio with a number of other musicians.

“Satire is a dangerous game In Hollywood,” Billy Wilder once observed. “It invites self-immolation.” Still, the satiric spirit looms large in many of this year’s buzzworthy movies: American Fiction, Poor Things, Saltburn, Air, The Holdovers and even Barbie.
All mobilize satiric weaponry — humor, irony, even ridicule — in advancing their perspectives. The clever corporate barbs in Barbie are soothingly pink-coated, but by contrast the protagonist in American Fiction is a blunt and self-destructive novelist. His work supposedly is not satiric enough nor Black enough for him to register success.
Barbie was heralded at the Golden Globes while American Fiction was snubbed. The latter still earned the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, a SAG Awards Cast nomination and a spot on the AFI’s Top 10 Films of 2023.

Ridley Scott is responsible for many film classics that will be recognized in the zeitgeist for years to come. Two of his most celebrated works come from the sci-fi genre, with the films Alien from 1979 and Blade Runner from 1982. Although, of the two, Alien was the one that became an instant classic, while Blade Runner was initially a flop that had acquired its following over time and it is now recognized as one of the greatest films in science fiction with its profound themes, stellar effects that still hold up, and a fully realized noir-ish world.
As franchises and the re-visiting of intellectual properties dominate the modern film world, both of Scott’s signature works have been given sequels/prequels in recent years. Alien: Covenant would be Scott’s follow-up to the Alien prequel, Prometheus, and Blade Runner 2049 would be the direct sequel to Scott’s cult hit that...

Director Ridley Scott is reflecting on his decision to step down from directing the ‘Blade Runner’ sequel due to a scheduling conflict with 2017’s ‘Alien: Covenant’. The director regrets his decision of not directing ‘Blade Runner’, reports Variety. “I shouldn’t have had to make that decision,” Scott said in a recent interview with Empire magazine. “But I had to. I should have done ‘Blade Runner 2’.”
After being attached to the project, Scott announced in 2014 that he would no longer direct the ‘Blade Runner’ sequel, instead choosing to helm the sci-fi horror film ‘Alien: Covenant’, starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride.
Denis Villeneuve served as director on ‘Blade Runner 2049’, which is a follow-up to the 1982 original directed by Scott – which included Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas and Jared Leto.

Ridley Scott is looking back and opening up about not being able to direct the Blade Runner sequel. The filmmaker had been announced by Alcon Entertainment back in 2011 to helm the follow-up to his 1982 film that starred Harrison Ford.

Ridley Scott's original "Blade Runner" will always continue to be the gold standard of dreary, cyberpunk sci-fi. Although it took time for it to be as highly regarded as it is today, Scott's dystopian futuristic noir is a masterpiece that has yet to be equalled, even if Denis Villaneuve's startling sequel, "Blade Runner 2049," came awfully close.
It's rare to be remembered for even one landmark science fiction film that exists on the same level that "Blade Runner" occupies, let alone be responsible for two revered classics. Yet, that's exactly what Scott was able to accomplish with "Alien." Within a span of three years from 1979 to 1982, Scott spawned both properties and eventually spun H.R. Giger's indelible Xenomorph design into a successful franchise.
Over time, it's been revealed that "Alien" and "Blade Runner" actually exist within the same universe. In a perfect world, Scott would have been able to...

Chile’s Clara Films and Barcelona-based VFX studio Unbound Hub have forged a strategic development pact for the upcoming dystopian TV series, “Numana.”
Created by Argentine writers Jesica Arán (“Pájaros Negros”) and Soledad Velasco (Disney+’s “Dreaming High”), the project participated at Conecta Fiction’s High End Pitch session.
“We are thrilled to partner with Unbound Hub in the development of ‘Numana,’” said producer Clara Larrain of Clara Films.
“Nowadays, investors fear unpredictable budgets that a series like this can mean, so having Unbound Hub on board this early will be instrumental not only in bringing our dystopian vision to life, but in reducing risk.”
“Together, we aim to create an immersive and captivating viewing experience that will maximize production value and simplify our VFX journey,” she added.
“Numana” is set in the year 2069 when babies are made on demand by an all-powerful company called Numana. Alex and Mia are among those babies-on-demand.

"Captain America 4" now has a new name. Originally titled "Captain America: New World Order," the movie is now "Captain America: Brave New World." Whether the new movie will pay tribute to Aldous Huxley's classic 1932 sci-fi novel "Brave New World" remains to be seen, and reps for Disney did not respond to Popsugar's request for comment about the change.
Anthony Mackie, who stars as hero Sam Wilson, announced the news on his Instagram on June 6. "When Harrison Ford tells you how kicking ass should look, you listen!" he wrote in the caption. "LoL… Thanks for the on set wisdom and laughs my friend! Can't wait to do it again… Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World in theaters May 3, 2024." However, shortly after Mackie shared that post, Marvel pushed back the film's release by two months.

The New World Order has fallen. We’re now in a Brave New World. Since the announcement of a fourth Captain America film, with Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson in the lead, fans have had one nagging concern: that subtitle.
To the uninformed, there’s nothing terribly wrong with Marvel calling its movie Captain America: New World Order. After all, the movie will deal with the Leader and the Serpent Society establishing a secret government, causing trouble on the world stage. However, the phrase has been used by Right Wing conspiracy theorists in the U.S., often with racist and explicitly anti-Semitic views. While Marvel likely did not mean to invoke these ideas, there’s no denying that the title may have put a damper on the first movie starring a Black Captain America for some.

With just a single, relaxed, behind-the-scenes pic posted on Instagram by Anthony Mackie, everything changes for Captain America’s next big-screen MCU outing. Formerly known as New World Order, the fourth Cap movie will now proudly bear the title Brave New World, as shown on the back of the chairs in Mackie’s on-set snap. At first glance it’s a superficial change, but it’s probably a sensible idea to move away from a phrase thrown around by George Bush Sr in the ‘90s and embrace something a little more Shakespearean.
‘O brave new world, that has such people in’t.’ So says Miranda in The Tempest. She was, obviously enough, not talking about the cast of Cap 4, but if she had been, she wouldn’t have been wrong. As Mackie’s photo attests, the film includes the not inconsiderable presence of Harrison Ford as General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross...

Is Aldous Huxley the new head of Hydra?
Marvel Studios has renamed its fourth First Avenger film “Captain America: Brave New World,” changing the 2024 release’s original title of “Captain America: New World Order.” The May 3 release date has not changed.
“Brave New World” is also the title of Huxley’s altogether too predictive 1932 dystopian novel, set in a futuristic World State. Disney did not explain the reason for the change in its Tuesday morning release, though the phrase “New World Order” carries a whiff of globalist politics that the literary “Brave New World” does not.
The studio also released its first set photo from the movie, currently in production. Harrison Ford and Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson and takes over the mantle of Cap for “Brave New World,” can be seen yukking it up behind the scenes.

There’s a rich, storied history of independent bookstores in Southern California, from Pasadena’s Vroman’s to Chevalier’s Books in Larchmont Village (which has welcomed everyone from Howard Hughes to Aldous Huxley and Nat King Cole through its doors, which first opened in 1940).
Now, as some consumers tire of buying books online from faceless corporations, a new generation of community-focused shops is sprouting up throughout Los Angeles – giving life to writers and readers across different neighborhoods.
In Pasadena, there’s Octavia’s Bookshelf; in Highland Park, North Figueroa Bookshop; in Mid-City, Palm Grove Social; in Santa Monica, Zibby’s Bookshop. All serving vastly different audiences with unique and carefully curated stock, LA’s indie bookstore movement is a reminder that print isn’t quite dead.

Simulant is a sci-fi thriller directed by April Mullen starring Robbie Amell, Jordana Brewster, Simu Liu and Sam Worthington.
It is a world full of misery, ruled by technology in which humans count for little, because Artificial Intelligence controls everything.
No, it’s not Italian neorealism. For at least the next six months, it’s science fiction.
Not the best.
Movie review Simulant (2023)
The trouble with dreams is that sometimes they come true, and the fictions that Aldous Huxley and George Orwell (or even Philip K. Dick) imagined are starting to come true with the advent of AI, and Simulant is just one of the thousands attempts of rendering to come.
It’s neither disastrous nor is it good, but the seed that brings it to life has neither an apotheosis formulation nor anything we don’t read about on the newspapers in a daily basis, nor is the story development brutal enough,...

One of the greatest honors someone can receive from the United Kingdom is receiving a knighthood. However, not everyone wants the title. This included rock star David Bowie.
Who gets to be knighted by the British monarchy?
Anyone can be nominated for knighthood (or damehood for women), but they must meet the monarch’s criteria. The nominee will have made an important contribution to the UK and the world, inspiring and influencing others with their work. Only citizens of the UK can officially be made knights or dames. However, people from all over the world can receive an honorary version of the title.
The late Queen Elizabeth knighted almost 300 people during her reign. This included diplomats, politicians, business leaders, artists, humanitarians, and athletes. Some of the most notable people who received knighthoods over the last few years include Paul McCartney, Emma Thompson, Elton John, Sean Connery, Bill Gates, Angelina Jolie,...

The Episode: "Black Mirror," season 1, episode 2, "Fifteen Million Merits"
Where You Can Stream It: Netflix
The Pitch: The official Netflix synopsis of "Fifteen Million Merits" is:
"After failing to impress the judges on a singing competition show, a woman must perform degrading acts or return to a slave-like existence."
The woman in question is Abi, played by Jessica Brown Findlay, who later co-starred in the Peacock adaptation of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," one of the great dystopian novels. Yet in some ways, Abi functions as more of an ideal for Bing, who gives an impassioned speech in "Fifteen Million Merits" where he refers to Abi and her singing talent as "the one thing I ever came close to anything real about.

After years of development, “BioShock”, the 2007 first-person shooter video game is being prepped as a new live-action movie, to be directed by Francis Lawrence, for streaming on Netflix:
“…incorporating ideas by 20th century dystopian and utopian thinkers Ayn Rand, George Orwell, and Aldous Huxley, as well as historical figures John D. Rockefeller and Walt Disney, the game sees the player guide ‘Jack’, after his airplane crashes in the ocean near the ‘bathysphere terminus’ that leads to the underwater city of ‘Rapture’.
“Built by the business magnate ‘Andrew Ryan’, the city was intended to be an isolated utopia, but the discovery of ‘Adam’, a genetic material which can be used to grant superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline.
“Jack tries to find a way to escape, fighting through hordes of Adam-obsessed enemies, and the iconic, deadly ‘Big Daddies’, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and eventually learning of Rapture's past.

Double Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund has been named new Honorary President of Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival, the biggest movie event in Scandinavia..
The “Triangle of Sadness” helmer will act as an advisor for the Swedish fest and “leave his artistic imprint on the festival program,” promised the organizers. That includes the upcoming 46th edition, starting in January.
“It was both an easy and a joyful choice to accept this heavy title,” said Östlund, who will succeed previous presidents, Ingmar Bergman and Roy Andersson
“We share the vision of a more vital cinema culture, free from nostalgic throwbacks. We will have to do this work in many different areas, but I can reveal that the first one for us to lecture is the cinema audience.”
“They must learn the difference between scrolling for dopamine on individual screens and to take part in a show,” he added.

Ruben Ostlund, who’s been on a world tour presenting his Palme d’Or winning film “Triangle of Sadness,” made his first trip to Morocco for the Marrakech Film Festival. He was on the ground to deliver a joyful and jam-packed masterclass, following the footsteps of Jim Jarmusch, James Gray, Asghar Farhadi, Leos Carax and Julia Ducournau, who also turned up on the Moroccan stage this year. Ostlund also took the time to chat with Variety in the Pierre Hermé tea house nestled in the lush gardens of La Mamounia palace.
Ostlund, who traveled with his wife and one-year old, said he did not regret having committed to a theatrical distribution strategy with “Triangle of Sadness,” even if the market hasn’t fully recovered from the pandemic. The movie began its global rollout in theaters in late September and has so far grossed approximately 11 million, with many more markets to launch.

Rolling applause, and lots of it, greeted Ruben Östlund and the cast of Triangle Of Sadness as they entered the Cannes press conference this morning.
Call it cathartic for a global audience that’s been mired too long by Covid, inflation, and the dreariness of the Ukraine war. Cannes is notorious for its somber, three year hour movies. However, Triangle of Sadness in its Farrelly Brothers-esque vomit and poop antics, provided a reason for the press corps here to laugh, and, boy, are they responding to it after last night’s crowd gave the pic one of this Cannes’ longest standing ovations.
The movie, which Östlund bills as his “end of Western Civilazation,” follows a fashion model and her model casting agent partner, played by Charlbi Dean and Harris Dickinson, who wind up on luxury yacht, the poorest of those setting sail, and are ultimately stranded on a deserted island.

Woody Harrelson will reteam with “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund for his next film “The Entertainment System is Down.”

In “Triangle of Sadness,” Harrelson plays a rabid Marxist who is the captain of a cruise for the super-rich. The yacht sinks, leaving survivors, including a fashion model celebrity couple, marooned on an island. As Östlund described it during the presser,...

“She was such a trailblazer,” says Carmen Cusack of Clare Booth Luce. The Tony-nominated actress (“Bright Star”) played the multifaceted author and politician in the musical “Flying Over Sunset.” The one of a kind show explores the surprising ways in which Luce (along with Cary Grant and Aldous Huxley) experimented with LSD as a form of therapy. “I couldn’t believe I had never heard of her,” reveals Cusack, “she was doing it all. She was navigating the political climate when there were no other women in that situation.” By exploring Luce’s highs and lows on stage, she developed a deep appreciation for this “fascinating” woman. Aldous Huxley, Cary Grant and Clare Boothe Luce – a grouping that might sound more like the set-up for a joke than the premise of a musical – were, in real life, proponents of lysergic acid diethylamide, what we’d now call early adopters. Though each of them tripped the light phantasmagorical during the 1950s, the writer, the movie star and the ambassador never actually came face to face, much less mind to mind, at least as far as we know, but they somehow should have, a situation the new, very original and often delightful musical Flying Over Sunset seeks to rectify.
With a book and direction by James Lapine (Into The Woods), music by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Michael Korie (Grey Gardens), Flying Over Sunset boasts a top-notch creative team and cast and a physical production that’s one of the most ravishing on Broadway. Starring Harry Hadden-Paton, Carmen Cusack and Tony Yazbeck, the 1950s-set musical about three real-life celebrities experimenting with LSD features a book and direction by James Lapine, music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Michael Korie. The work of fiction was inspired by the lives of writer Aldous Huxley (Hadden-Paton), playwright, diplomat, and congresswoman Clare Boothe Luce (Cusack) and movie star Cary Grant (Yazbeck). “American Housewife” (ABC)
After an untimely exit by one cast member and five seasons under its belt, the Katy Mixon-starring sitcom called it quits.
“Call Your Mother” (ABC)
Kyra Sedgwick’s foray into multi-cam comedy proved short-lived: the network pulled the plug after just one season.
“For Life” (ABC)
ABC pulled the plug on this drama series, but there might be a renewal elsewhere in its future.
“mixed-ish” (ABC)
The Mark-Paul Gosselaar/Tika Sumpter-starring “black-ish” spinoff lasted two seasons.
“Rebel” (ABC)
The cancellation of this decently-rated debut series loosely based on the life of Erin Brockovich was so shocking even its leading lady Katey Sagal had something to say about it.
Absentia (Amazon Prime)
Stana Katic’s “Castle” follow-up proved to not have the same staying power, with its third season being its last.
“All Rise” (CBS)
Another series with some unfortunate mojo, this legal drama eked out...

Flying Over Sunset, Lincoln Center Theater’s James Lapine-Tom Kitt-Michael Korie musical interrupted by the pandemic, will return for preview performances in November, marking the nonprofit theater company’s reopening after the shutdown.
Starring Harry Hadden-Paton, Carmen Cusack and Tony Yazbeck, the 1950s-set musical about three real-life celebrities experimenting with LSD begins performances at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on Thursday, November 4, with an opening set for Monday, December 6.
Also at Lincoln Center, the Off Broadway production of Intimate Apparel in the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater begins previews Thursday, January 13, 2022, opening Thursday, January 27.
Both productions were in previews when New York’s theater shutdown hit in March 2020.
“Ecstatic excitement barely begins to describe the feelings we have about reopening,” said Lincoln Center Theater Producing Artistic Director André Bishop, who called the productions “two wildly different musical works whose lives were cut short well over a year ago.

To say that Lionsgate’s sci-fi film “Voyagers” never honors its true nature would be overstating the case and unfair to filmmaker well-intentioned Neil Burger’s latest directorial effort. But as an initially thoughtful, would-be intelligent sci-fi morality tale that loses its way, there is something to be said about the manner in which “Voyagers” undermines its considerate Aldous Huxley-ian contemplation of human nature in the name of thrills, entertaining audiences, and simple-minded messaging.
