Passionately pursuing your dreams and not letting anyone stand in your way as you set out to achieve your goals is a powerful message present in several aspects of Woody Allen’s latest independent romantic comedy, ‘Magic in the Moonlight.’ The main character in the film, Stanley Crawford, is an admired illusionist who isn’t afraid to let go of his fame as he sets out to prove that people in his field aren’t genuinely gifted. Actress Erica Leerhsen, who plays a supporting role in the movie, is also effortlessly and powerfully fulfilling her dream career with her third film collaboration with the Academy Award-winning writer-director. ‘Magic in the Moonlight,’ which is [ Read More ]

It seems every new Woody Allen film brings out in force the writer/director’s detractors, who kvetch that it’s “not one of his best” and that it’s “just another Woody Allen movie.” The first statement is certainly undeniable since he’s made so many masterpieces and the second observation is more or less true but so what? Magic In The Moonlight is currently sitting on a measly 52% over at Rotten Tomatoes with the 78-year old Allen being attacked for making the kind of movie he’s most known for — and most liked for — so long as he does it well. And with Magic In The Moonlight, Woody Allen has done it very well indeed. It’s not on the level of his great films – it’s not Annie Hall, Manhattan, or Blue Jasmine, but Magic In The MOONLIGHTis a kind of movie you rarely see in late...

Title: Magic In The Moonlight Director: Woody Allen Starring: Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Simon McBurney, Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater, Erica Leerhsen, Marcia Gay Harden, Eileen Atkins. Woody Allen enchants again. This time he takes us to the French Riviera in the late twenties, where witticism, magnificent dresses (designed by his longtime collaborator Sonia Grande), alluring revivals of tracks of the period (performed by Woody’s jazz-band companion Conal Fowkes), build up an amusing and profound romantic comedy. Colin Firth plays the most celebrated magician of his age, British Stanley Crawford, who performs under the disguise of Chinese conjuror Wei Ling Soo. The Englishman has a sky-high opinion of himself and is [ Read More ]

The marketing push for Woody Allen’s latest, a period romantic comedy titled Magic in the Moonlight, has been atypically slight in recent weeks, but Sony Pictures Classics is finally kicking its campaign into high gear with the release of dozens of images from the film, in addition to a large synopsis. Allen and company have no real reason to worry about his film’s box office chances, however – with his reputation and a cast including Emma Stone and Colin Firth, Magic in the Moonlight should cast quite a spell in theaters when it opens later this month.
A new set of images from the film, highlighting its stellar cast and period setting, have landed online, and you can check those out below. In addition to Stone and Firth, Magic in the Moonlight features Hamish Linklater, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Erica Leerhsen, Eileen Atkins, Simon McBurney, Antonia Clarke and Jeremy Shamos.

Okay , we still know nothing about Woody Allen’s next movie that is currently shooting in Rhode Island and Providence starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone (some have speculated it’s a college professor/student relationship story). Though there’s word today that Parker Posey is also part of the cast. But otherwise, details are… zilch. So in the meantime, let’s move over to Allen’s current movie, “Magic In The Moonlight.” It’s a romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a charlatan spiritualist, and personal and professional complications ensue when the man falls for the spirited young swindler. Colin Firth stars as the Englishman and Emma Stone plays the unlikely charlatan. The movie also stars Hamish Linklater, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Erica Leerhsen, Eileen Atkins, Simon McBurney, Antonia Clarke and Jeremy Shamos. Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight begins hitting theaters on July 25 and so far I've only heard from one person that's seen it, but the response was positive over the upcoming romantic comedy starring Emma Stone and Colin Firth. The story follows an Englishman (Firth) brought in to help expose a psychic medium (Stone) as a fake. Personal and professional complications ensue. Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater, Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Erica Leerhsen and Simon McBurney co-star. The film is set in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the Cote d'Azur, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age, which makes me want to see it even more as I absolutely love that area. Today I have for you 18 new pictures (though a couple I think you may have seen before) and a new poster for the film along with the following,...

The film is set in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the South of France, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age. Like many of his recent films, Woody Allen's latest flick, "Magic in the Moonlight," is filled with familiar faces, and two of them are front and center on the movie's new poster.
The poster (below), premiering today exclusively on Moviefone, features stars Emma Stone and Colin Firth decked out in 1920s period garb, a nod to the film's Jazz Age setting. In "Moonlight," Firth plays a Brit known for his work debunking fake spiritualists, who travels to the south of France to unmask another assumed fraud, played by Emma Stone.
Unfortunately for Firth, he ends up falling for Stone instead, an inner struggle that seems to be playing out on the poster. Stone appears kooky, with a far off look in her eyes; Firth looks skeptical, yet can't keep his gaze off of her.
The period romantic comedy, written and directed by Allen, also stars Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver,...

I think we're all still scratching our heads as to why Sony Classics decided to take five films to this year's Cannes Film Festival (more details on those films here), but decided not to take Woody Allen's Cote d'Azur-set drama Magic in the Moonlight. Set in the 1920s on the French Riviera (wait, why isn't this at Cannes again??), Woody Allen’s 5,0000th film (ok, less), “Magic In The Moonlight,” is a romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle. And, of course, personal and professional complications ensue. That’s all we’ve known for several months, but new plot details have emerged along with two new photos from the film. Colin Firth stars as the Englishman and Emma Stone plays an unlikely charlatan. The movie also stars Hamish Linklater (Miranda July’s “The Future”), Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Erica Leerhsen, Eileen Atkins, Simon McBurney, Antonia Clarke and Jeremy Shamos. It’s perhaps not as star-studded as you’re used to from a Woody Allen film but when you’ve got Emma Stone and Colin Firth in the leads, that’s obviously more than enough. If you’ve...

I heard about The Butterfly Room – an American suspense thriller with an Italian sensibility, starring the British-born Barbara Steele – almost a year ago, and I’ve been waiting ever since on the proverbial pins and needles to see it.
Well, I got plenty of pins and needles in the squirm-inducing scenes involving the pinning of butterflies to specimen boards! Be sure to read my The Butterfly Room review for the details!
In a nutshell, it was well worth the wait.
I figured I’d be lucky to catch a streaming link somehow, never dreaming I’d actually get a personal invite from the film’s director to see it in a historical indie movie theater just down the street from my house – and what’s more, the regal Ms. Steele was in attendance!

This upcoming month, there are two interesting genre titles playing on Fearnet that you should take note of; 'Eden Lake' and 'Dahmer.' Why? Because they both represent early movies for actors that have proved to be outstanding performers in the arts long before they honed their craft. In the case of 'Eden Lake,' the film is fronted by Michael Fassbender, long before he played Magneto in the 'X-Men' films, stole the show in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' & played the android David from 'Prometheus' with such cold, calculated perfection. Also, you can catch 'Dahmer,' the bio pic from director David Jacobson, which stars Jeremy Renner in one of his first cinematic lead roles. Now he's an Avenger in the Marvel Universe! So it got me thinking about other examples of successful stars you may have totally forgotten were in genre films.

It's become quite obvious what draws me to the theater more than anything, the work of directors I've come to admire, appreciate and expect great things from. Certainly a film's subject matter adds to that excitement, but most often it's because the directors I most anticipate tell stories I most want to see brought to life. However, what today's list of my top ten most anticipated movies of 2014 illustrates is that even when the subject matter isn't necessarily something in my immediate wheelhouse, the thought of a new movie from one of my favorite directors makes such subject matter immediately more interesting. Or, as in the case with one particular film on this list, the subject matter, the development of the film itself and the talent involved makes it an obvious choice for my top ten, which we'll get to right now... If you've missed any of the previous installments...

When he’s still working on a film – as is the case with his latest – Woody Allen tends to rival Marvel and J.J. Abrams for secrecy in terms of what information he lets slip. He has, however, finally announced the title and let loose a couple of pictures from his latest, which we now know is called Magic In The Moonlight. Recently wrapped in the South of France, the film appears to be a period piece, which puts us in mind of Midnight In Paris (there’s no evidence yet that there will be scenes set in the present day, but who can tell when Woody keeps everyone sworn to secrecy?).What we do know is that Allen has assembled a typically great cast, with Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater, Eileen Atkins, Simon McBurney, Erica Leerhsen, Catherine McCormack, Paul Ritter and Jeremy Shamos all...

Acclaimed director Woody Allen never has a problem landing big stars for his projects, and his latest offering, which he announced today will be called Magic in the Moonlight, is no different.
The film, which takes place in the south of France, stars Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater, Simon McBurney, Jacki Weaver, Jeremy Shamos, Paul Ritter, Catherine McCormack and Erica Leerhsen. The images show Stone, Firth and Gay Harden in fanciful 1930s attire at an extravagant mansion in the French countryside. Vintage cars appear in the background on one photo. While Woody Allen tends to keep all details of his movies close to the chest until he's damn well ready to let you know, we now know at least one thing about his next annual movie: it has a title. You can hereafter refer to Allen's next film as "Magic In The Moonlight," and then discern what that means. The cast for this one is strong as per usual, with Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater, Simon McBurney, Jacki Weaver, Jeremy Shamos and Erica Leerhsen all on board for the movie that was shot this summer in the south of France. So perhaps a light, jaunty, Euro escapade the way Allen knows how, which sounds about right given the title. And check out the first look images, which feature some old timey hats and cars. No release date yet, but given how his last few pictures have gone,...

It’s really quite an amazing feat that Woody Allen has been able to remain as prolific a filmmaker as he has. Even at the age of 77, an age many would have been retired for several years upon reaching, he has never failed to deliver a film every year for over the past two decades. Granted, not all of them have been good. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Whatever Works, and To Rome with Love didn’t exactly hit the mark of quality that we’ve come to expect from him, but he’s also delivered Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and the brilliant Midnight in Paris, one of the best films of his career.
Despite the fact that his latest film, Blue Jasmine, hasn’t even premiered yet, Allen has already recruited a cast for his next project, which we already know includes Colin Firth and Emma Stone as the leads.

Woody Allen's next project is slowly assembling a potent-looking cast. Marcia Gay Harden and Jacki Weaver are the latest to sign up, adding a double dose of Oscar firepower to a roster that already boasts Colin Firth and the not-yet-Oscar-nominated-but-sure-to-be-one-day Emma Stone. It's been a veritable recruitment drive from the filmmaker. Eileen Atkins, Hamish Linklater, Simon McBurney, Jeremy Shamos and Erica Leerhsen have also survived the arduous (we like to imagine) recruitment process to join the fray. As usual with the great and prolific New Yorker, plot details are under wraps and the title remains firmly 'Tbc'. One of these days he's just going to forget the former altogether and we'll end up queueing to see Untitled Woody Allen Summer Project. We do know that this will be produced by Allen’s longtime associates Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, that it's a comedy shot in the South of France...

The latest Untitled Woody Allen Project is gaining steam as his 2013 feature is almost in theaters and lord knows the 77-year-old writer/director isn't going to lay around and do nothing. We already knew Emma Stone and Colin Firth would star and, as with all Allen projects in their early stages, we don't have any plot details outside the fact it will shoot in the South of France (le Midi). However, today we get a lot more names to add to the cast. The Wrap reports Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater (Lola Versus), Simon McBurney (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Jeremy Shamos (Taking Woodstock) and Erica Leerhsen (Anything Else) have joined the cast. I'm seeing Allen's Blue Jasmine (7/26, Spc) in just under two weeks and can't wait. It's actually going to be a double feature for me that day... along with The Conjuring of all films.

Well, with his latest "Blue Jasmine" coming to theaters later this month, it's time for Woody Allen to stick to his schedule and start getting his team together for his next effort. As per tradition, Allen is prepping his annual outing to a movie set, and he's added a bunch of new actors. Veteran Eileen Atkins, character actress Marcia Gay Harden, indie fave Hamish Linklater, familiar Brit face Simon McBurney, Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver, Jeremy Shamos and the young Erica Leerhsen (who you have forgotten was in both "Anything Else" and "Hollywood Ending") have all signed up for Allen's next movie, joining the previously announced Emma Stone and Colin Firth. As usual, there no story details or even word if it's a comedy or drama, which is usually the case for Allen projects -- they stay under warps until the last possible moment. But we do know he'll be shooting in France.
