The Beatles were often seen as some of classic rock’s greatest rebels — but what were they rebelling against? Different fans will give different answers, but one of the other rock stars from the 1960s has his own feelings on the matter. He said that Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen had the same mindset as the Fab Four.
Donovan said The Beatles and other rock stars felt ‘a mass generational angst’
Donovan is a psychedelic folk singer who is known for hits such as “Mellow Yellow,” “There Is a Mountain,” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” He also crossed paths with The Beatles many times. Donovan famously influenced much of the music of The White Album.
During a 2018 interview with Goldmine, Donovan discussed the social issues that cast a shadow over the 1960s counterculture. “The rivers were being poisoned as was the air,” he said. “Two world wars and a depression were produced.

Over the course of his life, Paul McCartney has been the subject of countless books about his life and time with The Beatles. Few upset him more than a book by longtime Beatles confidante Peter Brown. With writer Steven Gaines, Brown published The Love You Make, a book that spanned from the band’s teenage years to shortly after John Lennon’s death. McCartney took his copy of the book and burned it.
Paul McCartney felt betrayed by a book about The Beatles
In 1983, Brown and Gaines published The Love You Make, which pulled from Brown’s experiences as well as interviews with Beatles associates and the band themselves. Though many were happy to help with the book, the final product rankled. It detailed Lennon’s alleged sexual relationship with Beatles manager Brian Epstein and claimed McCartney had an illegitimate son, among other things. Brown sent out copies of the...

The Beatles were, overall, better at writing ballads than any of their contemporaries. Despite this, The Beatles’ “The Long and Winding Road” is not one of their prouder moments. Here’s an exploration of why the track just isn’t as good as some of their other slow songs.
The Beatles’ ‘The Long and Winding Road’ feels disingenuous
The Beatles gave us some of the best ballads of all time, such as “Yesterday,” “Something,” “And I Love Her,” “Here, There and Everywhere,” “Hey Jude,” and “Let It Be.” Despite its popularity, many critics just don’t enjoy “The Long and Winding Road” as much as the other songs.
That might be because the track is so sentimental. Rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be cool, and “The Long and Winding Road” is as emotive as a Carpenters hit. Of course, the same could be said of most Beatles ballads.

Exclusive: In a move that ought to make fans of The Beatles twist and shout, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes and his Neal Street Productions have set plans to make four separate theatrical films — one on each of the members of music’s most famous and enduring band.
Mendes will direct all four of the films, and this marks the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison – have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.
Mendes conceived this grand vision. He’ll tell interconnected stories, one from each band member’s point of view. The dating cadence of the films will be revealed closer to the films’ release. I’m told they are locking down writers quickly.

Rogers wrote Don’t Forget Me over the course of five days in late 2022, early 2023. Her sole collaborator on the project was Ian Fitchuk, who co-wrote eight of the album’s 10 songs and also played the majority of the instruments and served as its co-producer alongside Rogers.
“I wanted to make an album that sounded like a Sunday afternoon,” Rogers said in a note accompanying today’s announcement. “Worn in denim. A drive in your favorite car. No make up, but the right amount of lipstick. Something classic. The mohair throw and bottle of Whiskey in Joan Didion’s motel room. An old corvette. Vintage,...

Paul McCartney paid tribute tonight to his fellow Wings co-founder Denny Laine, who died Tuesday at 79.
“I have many fond memories of my time with Denny: from the early days when The Beatles toured with the Moody Blues,” the Beatles legend wrote on social media. “Denny joined Wings at the outset. He was an outstanding vocalist and guitar player.”
McCartney added: “He and I wrote some songs together the most successful being ‘Mull of Kintyre’ which was a big hit in the Seventies. We had drifted apart but in recent years managed to reestablish our friendship and share memories of our times together.
“Denny was a great talent with a fine sense of humour and was always ready to help other people. He will be missed by all his fans and remembered with great fondness by his friends. I send my condolences and best wishes to his wife, Elizabeth and family.

Taylor Swift is hinting at the meaning behind one of her Midnights tracks!
Swifties originally believed that Taylor‘s 2022 love song, “Sweet Nothing,” is about her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn.
However, there just might have been a different inspiration for that song. Taylor liked a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) about a theory that involves another celebrity couple.

The “Anti-Hero” singer liked an old tweet from October 2022 that compared a Paul McCartney quote to a lyric in “Sweet Nothing”.
Speaking about his relationship with ex-wife Linda McCartney, Paul said, “I would come back from a run with a poem to share and having listened Linda would say, ‘What a mind.’”
In her romantic Midnights track, Taylor sings, “On the way home / I wrote a poem / You say, ‘What a mind’ / This happens all the time.”
There definitely seems to be a connection there.

Shortly into his relationship with Linda McCartney, Paul McCartney asked her to visit him in Los Angeles. She agreed, though she didn’t tell McCartney. Therefore, when he walked through the door of his rented bungalow, he was surprised to see her there. She found him with an array of guests, which, according to Beatles associate Tony Bramwell, seemed to embarrass him.

Paul McCartney has been married three times, and John Lennon attended none of his weddings. Lennon died before McCartney’s second two weddings, and The Beatles were at such a low point in their relationships that none had attended McCartney’s first. Still, McCartney took time to bring attention to Lennon during his wedding in 2011. Here’s why McCartney wanted to pay his respects to his late friend.
Paul McCartney honored John Lennon’s birthday at his wedding
In 2011, McCartney married Nancy Shevell, whom he began dating in 2007. This was McCartney’s third marriage; his first wife, Linda McCartney, died in 1998, and he finalized his divorce from his second wife, Heather Mills, in 2008.
The couple wed at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in a small ceremony that included both their families, Ringo Starr and his wife, Barbara Bach, and George Harrison’s widow, Olivia Harrison. After the ceremony, the group...

Since its release, Paul McCartney’s song “Wonderful Christmastime” has sharply divided fans. While some people see it as a holiday classic, others find it cloying and repetitive. When discussing the song, a musicologist said its flaw for many lies in its simplicity. Still, the holiday song is incredibly successful.
A musicologist broke down why a Paul McCartney song annoys fans
In 1979, McCartney released the song “Wonderful Christmastime.” In the decades since its release, people have struggled to decide whether it is a holiday classic or a song with no place in the Christmas canon. Musicologist Nate Sloan said one of the song’s biggest problems is that it is “simple to a fault.”
“It moves through the verse section of the song faster than a sleigh with no brakes,” Sloan told Mental Floss. “Before you know it, ‘that’s enough’ and we’re off to the titular chorus. It...

Paul McCartney was the final Beatle to get married when he tied the knot in 1969. While one might expect to see pictures of the McCartneys celebrating with The Beatles and their wives, these images don’t exist. The other Beatles did not attend McCartney’s wedding. When reflecting on this, McCartney said he couldn’t remember if he’d invited them. Still, he understood why they didn’t attend.

Fans gathered outside of McCartney’s London home every day and shouted at Linda when she walked past. Once, McCartney felt fans had gone too far. When he scolded them, though, they were completely unapologetic.

The split had been acrimonious, but after the dust settled, the surviving Beatles had improved their relationships. McCartney was also able to look back fondly on his friendship with John Lennon. Paul McCartney confirmed what we all knew about The Beatles on a recent episode of his McCartney: A Life in Lyrics podcast: Yoko Ono’s presence during the band’s recording sessions didn’t exactly make for a pleasant work environment.
McCartney dug into the making of Let It Be, The Beatles’ 1970 final album. As he put it, the band members’ relationships were already strained, and those tensions rose thanks to an “inseparable” John and Yoko.

At this point in the podcast, the artist’s cohost, Paul Muldoon, replied, “Well, except that there is a reason why not. You’re there to do some work,...

Sometimes classic rock feels like it was just one big, happy, constantly collaborating family. One of the members of The Moody Blues said he co-wrote Paul McCartney’s “Band on the Run,” although the song’s writing credits tell a different story. Regardless, it’s undeniable the Moody Blues member did a lot for Wings.
A Moody Blues member who joined Wings said he wrote Paul McCartney’s ‘Band on the Run’
Denny Laine was a member of The Moody Blues who later became a member of Wings. During a 2023 interview with Naples Daily News, he said he co-wrote two of Wings’ most famous hits: “Band on the Run” and “Mull of Kintyre.” He received a co-writing credit on the latter but not the former. “Band of the Run” is credited to Paul and Linda McCartney, with Paul as its producer.

The Beatles stocked up on snacks in the studio. According to Beatles audio engineer Geoff Emerick, the band members were very protective of their food. If anyone touched their snacks, they exploded with frustration. This trait didn’t stop them from taking other people’s food, though.
The Beatles thought all snacks but their own were fair game for consumption
According to Emerick, The Beatles didn’t want anyone eating their snacks. They didn’t see a problem with eating other people’s food, though.
“Food was always very proprietary among The Beatles,” Emerick wrote in his book Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles. “Mal [Evans] would get everybody his own thing, and there was no sharing, no eating family style; no one was allowed to try anyone else’s food. John Lennon accused the press of “shellacking” Yoko Ono and Linda McCartney. John had a (probably controversial) take on the situation. Despite any drama from back in the day, Yoko and Linda more than proved themselves.
John Lennon revealed why he and Yoko Ono had ‘deep sympathy’ for Linda McCartney
During a 1980 interview in the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, John discussed the public perception of Yoko and Linda. “You know Linda has taken the same kind of shellacking Yoko got and we have a deep sympathy for her because we know what she’s been through,” he said.
“She got the same kind of insults, hatred, absolute garbage thrown at her for no reason whatsoever other than she fell in love with Paul McCartney,” John added. “It’s just a crying shame the way both Linda and Paul — uh,...

Graham Nash got to know John Lennon relatively well over the years. He understood that the Beatle’s personality was relatively caustic at first, but he managed to break through and establish a friendship. Because of this, Cass Elliot asked Nash about what Lennon was like. Nash answered honestly, which brought Elliot to tears.
Graham Nash told Cass Elliot that John Lennon might be mean to her
Nash was a fan of The Mamas and The Papas and was interested in Michelle Phillips, so he went to Western Records to meet the band. He wound up speaking to Elliot, though, who wanted to know about British rock music.
“Inside the studio, Michelle, John, and Denny were huddled around a microphone, putting an overdub on ‘Dancing Bear,'” Nash wrote in his book Wild Tales. “Michelle was every bit as advertised: gorgeous and sexy — but otherwise engaged — so I wound up talking with Cass.

Keith Richards rose to fame with The Rolling Stones just as The Beatles began to dominate the world. In trying to establish The Rolling Stones as a successful rock band, Richards and his bandmates knew they had to reject the Beatle image. Richards shared how trying to avoid similarities to The Beatles was good for the band.
Keith Richards said The Rolling Stones didn’t want to be like The Beatles
The Rolling Stones began working with Andrew Loog Oldham as their manager. Oldham had previously worked with The Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, and had helped the band establish their image. When he began working with the Stones, he wanted them to adopt a similar image. They were not interested.

Paul McCartney married his first wife, Linda, in 1969. The pair dove right in when it came to dating. McCartney invited her across the ocean to London to spend time with him and she quickly agreed. When she arrived at his home, though, she was a bit startled by what she found. According to McCartney, she found his living situation shocking.

Paul McCartney met his first wife, Linda Eastman, in 1967. He was still with The Beatles and would be for another few years, but his time with the band was wearing on him. McCartney frequently felt tired and disillusioned. He shared how a brief comment from Linda changed his life perspective and helped shake him out of a behavior he’d developed because of the band.
Paul McCartney said his first wife Linda made a comment that changed his life
When McCartney met Linda, he was at the height of his career and constantly working. As a result, he was often exhausted when they met up. When he apologized to her for his fatigue, she made a simple remark that stunned him.

Paul McCartney was helpless as he watched The Beatles fall apart despite his best efforts to stop the breakup. The unofficial songwriting competition between Paul and John Lennon stressed the band to the breaking point. Yet Macca couldn’t keep himself from forming a new band, and it might have saved his life. McCartney’s Wings bandmate Henry McCullough pulled a knife and drove away a person who said he wanted to kill Paul.

Paul McCartney developed a knack for finding inspiration for his songs in front of him. It wasn’t always that easy. One musician called McCartney and John Lennon idiots as songwriters in the early 1960s. The dynamic duo teamed up to prove him wrong before their partnership ended. In the late 1960s, McCartney snuck in a reference to his wife, Linda McCartney, in a sad Beatles song that also lamented the business affairs that made the band’s split an ugly one.
Paul McCartney referenced the carefree side of his life with Linda McCartney in ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’
Despite the bitterness surrounding the band in late 1969, The Beatles managed to crank out a gem of an album with Abbey Road. It was the last record they made together.
“You Never Give Me Your Money,” the song that kicked off the Side 2 medley, expressly mentioned the messy business dealings.

Elton John has announced his retirement several different times, but Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr took a different approach when they wanted The Beatles to stop live performances. Rather than announcing it, they simply stopped. McCartney said he never wanted to do a grand farewell tour or even break up The Beatles when he got sick of them. He believed there was always a chance of reunion. McCartney specifically said that he didn’t want to take John’s approach.
Paul McCartney didn’t want The Beatles to approach a farewell tour like Elton John did
After playing a show in San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1966, The Beatles never toured again. They continued to make music together for the next several years, though. McCartney said they brought up the possibility of breaking up before they officially split, but he tended to push back against it.

Paul McCartney wrote classic rock songs for numerous artists besides The Beatles. For example, he penned Badfinger’s “Come and Get It.” Subsequently, Paul revealed what he thought of the song and the band.
Paul McCartney left Linda McCartney in bed to write Badfinger’s ‘Come and Get It’
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul discussed how “Come and Get It” came together. “I wrote this very late one-night at Cavendish Avenue, leaving Linda in bed and saying, I’ve got an idea for a song,” he recalled.
Paul had a positive reaction to the song immediately. “I went downstairs and just whispered it into my tape recorder,” he said. “I played it very quietly so as not to wake her.” Paul described the tune as “a very catchy song.” Notably, The Beatles recorded a demo of “Come and Get It” that appears on some copies of the album Abbey Road.

Browse through old photos of The Beatles, and you’ll find dozens, if not hundreds, where they’re smoking cigarettes. The band’s concerts always smelled like urine, but the Fab Four’s clothes probably stank of Marlboros and Dunhills. Paul McCartney’s addiction didn’t last, though, as a near-death experience in 1973 led him to quit smoking, at least for a while. Other musicians joined him in giving up cigarettes in the decades since.

The Fab Four had their limousines swarmed by fans, played a show in Montreal amid Ringo Starr death threats, and barely escaped their one trip to the Philippines in 1966. Yet Paul said making the Wings record Band on the Run in Lagos, Nigeria, trumped them all.

For Mary McCartney, directing the enthralling documentary If These Walls Could Sing on the history of London’s Abbey Road studio wasn’t just as a tip of the hat to her father Paul McCartney’s celebrated career, but also to her own life virturally growing up there, watching musical history being made. And although Dad participates as one of the interviewees, this is not just a story of The Beatles, but rather an eye- and ear-popping tale of a place where musical magic, on just about every level, was made, and continues to be made. The title tells it all as Mary McCartney’s splendid documentary, which premiered at Telluride last September and is now available on Disney+, covers the waterfront of Abbey Road’s 90 years.

Paul McCartney began writing songs in the late 1950s and hasn’t stopped since. It’s why he’s written more than 1,000 songs in his career, though the real total is probably higher. He has dozens of No. 1 hits to his name with and without The Beatles, but Paul set an unbreakable record when he wrote “Live and Let Die.”

There was one Beatles song Paul never wanted released (“The Long and Winding Road”), but the plan for “Live and Let Die,” his 1973 song with Wings, was always to have it go global.
The theme song to the James Bond movie of the same name came to life in 1972. Then-Apple Records head, Ron Kass, knew someone connected with the Bond franchise. Kass called Paul and asked if he wanted to do a Bond theme song.

Paul McCartney has been writing songs almost as long as he’s been alive. He played an Eddie Cochran song to impress John Lennon during an audition to join The Quarrymen, and the pair started writing originals soon after. The rest — The Beatles, Wings, a prolific solo career, being called an idiot by an artist who covered one of their songs — is history. But how many songs has Paul written? Let’s take a look.
Paul McCartney | Robert R. McElroy/Getty Images Paul McCartney has written at least 1,059 songs
John and Paul routinely shared songwriting credits on their Beatles tunes. Even if one contributed far more to the formulation of a song than the other (such as “The Ballad of John and Yoko”), both were listed as co-writers.
The duo started their own publishing company, Northern Songs, to house the rights to their music. The enterprise published hundreds of Fab Four songs.

Paul McCartney disappeared from public view in the waning days of The Beatles. Paul McCartney and Wings did have two successful albums in Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway. However, the band needed an album that cemented them as one of the great bands of the 1970s. That album manifested itself in Band on the Run, a highly successful record many consider a highlight of Paul McCartney’s, even with his albums from The Beatles. Wings did take several risks making the record, and guitarist Denny Laine said it was like “being a gambler.”

Of all The Beatles, Ringo Starr was the most successful in his movie career. Each acted with the band and appeared in films afterward, but Starr has the most extensive filmography. Critics agree that he showed promise as an actor; he was natural and charming onscreen and could have had a successful career. Unfortunately, he wasn’t very selective in the films he agreed to appear in, which negatively impacted his career. Here are four of Starr’s films to avoid.

John Lennon was the most controversial Beatle, but Paul McCartney also had moments when the public turned against him. These days, most people view him in a positive, near-reverent light, but he’s courted controversy. Here are three times McCartney found himself in hot water with the public.

In 1969, Lennon announced he was leaving The Beatles, but the group kept this news quiet.
“There was all sorts of weirdness going on where record contracts were being negotiated, and our not-so-good manager at the time, this guy called Allen Klein, he was saying, ‘Don’t tell anyone because I’m in the middle of a negotiation,'” McCartney said in an interview with Apple Music. “I was saying, ‘You’ve gotta tell ’em.’ You can’t pretend the group’s still together. We’re gonna get a new...

Paul McCartney responded to The Beatles’ break-up by releasing a pair of solo albums under his own name. Then he formed the band Wings. It was still something of a solo gig. Macca wrote the music (including songs he wrote on the spot) and played many of the instruments, but the group dynamic got him touring again. His bandmate said one Paul mistake stayed on a Wings song from the signature album Band on the Run.

Paul McCartney is gearing up to share his new photo book 1964: Eyes of the Storm, and in celebration of its June 13th release, the newly-reopened National Portrait Gallery in London will host a major exhibition of 250-plus photographs taken during the height of Beatlemania.
1964: Eyes of the Storm came about after McCartney recently unearthed rolls of film he’d used nearly 60 years ago and hadn’t seen since. These photos encapsulate The Beatles in perhaps their most candid form, traveling around Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami.
Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm will be open between June 28th and October 1st, 2023, putting on display these relics captured over a three-month period in which The Beatles first began to reach peak superstardom.

In the 1960s, The Beatles were the biggest band in the world, and their fans were willing to do anything to feel closer to them. This included breaking into their homes. While this seems like an extreme action to take, it happened more than once. Here are three times Beatles fans broke into their homes and stole things.

Before George Harrison and his first wife Pattie Boyd married, she had moved a number of items into his home. His property had a high fence, but fans still managed to make their way onto the grounds.
“The gate was operated manually, though, and it wasn’t long before the marauding fans discovered where George lived,” she wrote in her book Wonderful Tonight. “Hordes of girls used to hang about outside, waiting for me to go out.
