There are Christmas movies and then there are Christmas movies -- as in, the ones you can't escape knowing about even if you tried, like "Home Alone," "It's a Wonderful Life," "Miracle on 34th Street," and, of course, "A Christmas Story." You may not love them all equally; in fact, you might actually outright hate some of them! And yet, there are moments and quotes from these films that will remain burned into your brain until the day you die. It's also inevitable that you'll end up having to revisit them during the annual winter holidays, whether it's because you legitimately love them or because you've finally given up trying to convince everyone to agree on something new to watch during one of your family gatherings and just thrown on "Elf" for the umpteenth time instead.

Last week, we looked at Wtf Happened to the cast of A Christmas Story in a special yuletide edition of Wtf Happened to this Celebrity. This week, we’re digging back into Bob Clark’s 1983 classic, A Christmas Story, and looking into how the film itself got made in the first place. While many consider it one of the definitive holiday movies now, in 1983, it was a pretty modest film that came from a director best known for exploitation films, Bob Clark.
Indeed, the Canadian Bob Clark had already made one Christmas classic, 1974’s Black Christmas, which is widely regarded as the first classic-style slasher film, within having also made the most popular Canadian film of all time, 1981’s Porky’s. Yet, neither of those hard-r films would have you think Clark could make a gentle, PG-rated Christmas movie that would stand the test of time. Suffice it to say, he pulled it off,...

Given that 1983's "A Christmas Story" only continues to grow in popularity with each passing year, one of my favorite party tricks to use when a relative or friend is in the throes of TNT's annual 24-hour marathon of the heartwarming holiday comedy is explain how it and 1974's "Black Christmas" — a bitter, bleak, and uncompromising horror classic — were made by the same director, Bob Clark.
It's a fun bit of trivia because both movies are so diametrically opposed in tone, with each exploring very different facets of Christmastime. Yet when examined closely, "A Christmas Story" and "Black Christmas" have a surprising amount in common, with the films containing a streak of knowing cynicism when it comes to the trappings of the holiday.
As it turns out, this isn't by coincidence. While Clark was never really an auteur director, careening as he did between numerous genres and budgets, his...

Although "A Christmas Story" was not a big hit when it first released in theaters in 1983, it's long since become one of the most famous holiday movies of all time. We can credit the TNT channel for this; in 1997 they started airing 24-hour Christmas marathons of the movie, and throughout the whole month of December "A Christmas Story" still plays on the channel seemingly every day. The TNT executives decided that everyone was going to learn to love this movie, whether they wanted to or not.
Of course, the movie would never have caught on as well as it has if it wasn't legitimately good. As /Film's own Demetra Nikolakakis put it, the reason it's so great is because it "chooses nostalgic realism over rose-tinted glasses." The movie is about an adult Ralphie reflecting on his childhood, and it never sugarcoats just how terrible so many parts of childhood are.

"A Christmas Story" is a staple of the holiday season, with annual 24-hour marathons on TBS and TNT. This year we have double the Ralphie fun because a sequel, "A Christmas Story Christmas," is streaming on HBO Max. Not only that, but Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie, and his Wild West Picture Show Productions partner Vince Vaughn, have started a new video podcast called "A Cinematic Christmas Journey." The first episode is about "A Christmas Story," and we're getting some fun tales from the set.
It's hosted by Billingsley and Nick Schenk, the screenwriter for the Clint Eastwood films "Gran Torino," "Cry Macho," and "The Mule," as well as the new sequel "A Christmas Story Christmas." For this episode, Schenk and Billingsley welcome Ian Petrella, who played Ralphie's little brother Randy, R.D. Robb, who played Schwartz, and Scott Schwartz, who played Flick. Bob Clark's 1983 holiday classic, "A Christmas Story," has become a traditional watch for countless people across the globe. Based on Jean Shepherd's semi-fictional anecdotes in his 1966 book "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash" and set during the winter of 1940, "A Christmas Story" is arguably one of the most recognizable Christmas films ever made. Ralphie's pink bunny pajamas, Flick licking a frozen flag pole, the constant chant of "you'll shoot your eye out," the secret Ovaltine commercial, and of course, "the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window" from the old man's leg lamp have all become Christmas cultural staples of the holiday season.
Since 1997, TNT has been airing a 24-hour marathon dubbed "24 Hours of 'A Christmas Story,'" which means plenty of people have watched the film so many times, it's not unlikely that someone could recite any random line from the script from memory.

What do you want for Christmas this year? Is it a Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle? Is it a fuzzy pink bunny costume? A very sexy leg lamp for your window? Heck, you may even have The Old Man's leg lamp in your own home already. But maybe you'd like all of that and more inside the actual house from the 1983 film "A Christmas Story." If so, we have good news. The Parker household -- now a museum centered around the classic holiday film -- is up for sale, according to Variety. Don't celebrate just yet, though. There are a lot of conditions, and you'll probably have to sell all your other presents to afford it.
If you don't watch "A Christmas Story" several times each holiday season as I do, the modern classic is set at Christmas in 1940s Indiana. Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) wants nothing...

The holidays, in general, are about family. Spending time with family, appreciating family, and also, getting really sick of family after an afternoon listening to that one crazy uncle rant just a little too long about god knows what this time. But that sense of family leads to wanting to watch family-friendly, wholesome content, which is no doubt part of why "A Christmas Story" is on TV around the clock every December. It's become a genuine classic, beloved enough to have been added to the National Film Registry. Not bad for a movie about a little kid just hoping to get a Bb gun for Christmas.
Along the way, Ralphie — our protagonist — gets into mischief with his friends, drops an F-bomb in front of his old man, and gets a little too into his father's major award (that just happens to be shaped like a woman's leg). Come to think of it,...

Few Christmas movies seem to be as frequently rewatched — and well-loved — as "A Christmas Story." Sure, "Home Alone" gives Ralphie a good run for his money, but it's hard to beat the annual 24-hour "A Christmas Story" marathons. Whether you always hunker down for the day-long ordeal or indulge your family by watching the classic movie once every few years (a situation that I can personally relate to — my dad's a big fan), "A Christmas Story" has certainly slipped its way into many people's holiday customs.
Of course, it certainly doesn't hurt that the movie is an ode to family, childhood innocence, and nostalgic traditions. If the holiday season tempts us to reminisce about simpler, happier days — when Christmas was met with pure, childlike excitement, the playground was the center of the universe, and hot chocolate tasted extra-sweet — "A Christmas Story" is an indulgence that chooses nostalgic realism over rose-tinted glasses.

For that reason, we’ve collected the below streaming guide of holiday favorites, old and new, so you know exactly where to find your favorite Christmas movies this year. We’ve generally based this on where they’re available to watch without an additional surcharge on top of a subscription. It’s hard to imagine now, but A Christmas Story wasn’t exactly a hit when it opened in theaters in 1983. It’s mainly due to the film’s constant rotation on cable television during the holiday season that it achieved its current status as a beloved Yuletide classic. So it makes perfect sense in the current streaming era that its long-belated, awkwardly titled sequel A Christmas Story Christmas should make its debut on HBO Max. (Yes, there was 1994’s My Summer Story and 2012’s direct-to-video sequel A Christmas Story 2. But this film ignores them, and so should you.)

It's been almost 40 years since the holiday classic "A Christmas Story" followed young Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) as he pined for the ultimate Christmas gift back in the glory days of the 1940s: an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time. The original 1983 holiday comedy has become a fierce favorite around the holidays, so much so that it's earned a now-traditional 24-hour marathon every single year, stretching from Christmas Eve into Christmas Day.
Now Peter Billingsley has returned for "A Christmas Story Christmas," which seeks to give fans a legacy-quel that follows an adult Ralphie as he attempts to give his own family a Christmas they'll never forget. Not only is Billingsley back as Ralphie in front of the camera, with his brilliant and occasionally mischievous blue eyes still shining bright behind rounded spectacles, but...

Peter Billingsley, the blond moppet from “A Christmas Story,” was 11 years old when he starred in that 1983 holiday-sleeper-that-became-a-classic (though it depends who you ask — I’ve always been something of a Scrooge about it). The image of Billingsley from “A Christmas Story” — goggle-ish glasses, beaming gopher grin — became, in its way, as iconic a movie signifier of raucous kiddie-culture spirits as Macaulay Culkin’s cheeky gaze of frozen horror in “Home Alone.” But that was 40 years ago. Billingsley is now 51, and he’s the dad in “A Christmas Story Christmas,” a latter-day sequel to the movie that a lot of people (maybe too many) think of as their all-time favorite Yuletide TV bliss-out.
In “A Christmas Story Christmas,” Billingsley, as the grown-up version of Ralphie Parker, is still a likable actor, but he’s lost any trace of that rascally Bb-gun exuberance. He now resembles the former NBC News anchor...

When Bob Clark’s “A Christmas Story” hit theaters the week before Thanksgiving 1983, no one could have foreseen the cultural impact the family comedy would have on the holiday film canon. A modest box office showing (it took in 2 million its first week and failed to crack 20 million during its full run), mixed reviews, and some awards attention from Canada’s Genie Awards added up to a hazy picture of a film that was good enough but hardly a game-changer. Later, of course, came the television airings, landing the film in near-constant rotation during the holiday season and turning it into an unexpected holiday favorite. Familiarity, it seems, didn’t breed contempt when it came to this TNT and TBS staple; it only inspired outright adoration.

Because 1983’s “A Christmas Story” has achieved iconic status among holiday movies and has become a nostalgic cornerstone to millions of fans who revisit it every December, it’s easy to forget that the film’s initial success came from its skewering of nostalgia itself.
The original tagline ironically called the film “A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas,” and director Bob Clark’s adaptation of Jean Shepherd’s comic reminiscences struck a chord precisely because it revealed the greed, venality, occasional cruelty, and recognizably human behavior that lurked beneath the Norman Rockwell façade of hazy Yuletide memories.
After several unsuccessful attempts to craft a sequel to Clark’s film, we finally get “A Christmas Story Christmas,” which brings back several of the original movie’s cast members. If you grew up with cable in the ‘90s, you’ve tuned into TBS’ 24 Hours of A Christmas Story marathon at least once. A Christmas Story is a 1983 Christmas comedy directed by Bob Clark and based on Jean Shepherd’s semi-fictional book, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash from 1966. The film stars Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, Peter Billingsley, and Zack Ward. The tale of a kid trying to swindle his way into an “official Red Ryder carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle” has become a holiday classic thanks to the yearly airings. It was an independent film with very little notoriety until the early ’90s when Turner Broadcasting began airing the film across TCM, TNT, and TBS during the holidays. Perhaps you've watched the 1983 film "A Christmas Story" over and over again. It would be no surprise. It's often on a loop on Christmas Day. Heck, it might have been on enough in the background of your holiday celebrations that you've seen it more than "Star Wars." From the leg lamp that graces so many of our windows around the holidays, to the terrifying store Santa Claus, to saying, "You'll shoot your eye out" in reference to a rather dangerous Christmas toy, you've definitely heard of it. Today we have a new trailer for the sequel from Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max, "A Christmas Story Christmas," a name that could be a theme for many of our actual Christmases.
(Let's not dwell on the fact that there were a few other sequels, including "My Summer Story" in 1994, or the direct-to-dvd sequel that takes place six years after the original...

One of the most famous Christmas films of all time is getting a sequel. HBO Max released the first teaser for “A Christmas Story Christmas,” set to release on the streamer November 17.
The repetitively titled film is a sequel to 1983’s “A Christmas Story,” directed by Bob Clark and based on Jean Shepard’s 1966 novel “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.” Set in the ’40s, the original film starred Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, an ordinary 9-year-old boy engaging in various hijinks around Christmastime while desperately yearning to get a Bb gun for the big holiday. Shepard narrated the film as an adult Ralphie reminiscing about his childhood. The film was a moderate success during its original theatrical run, grossing about 69 million against a 3 million budget, but became a seasonal classic thanks to repeated television airings, and receives annual 24-hour marathons on cable channels such as TNT and TBS.

HBO Max has dropped the first footage of Peter Billingsley in his return as Ralphie in the upcoming A Christmas Story Christmas, the sequel to the classic holiday pic A Christmas Story.
The brief teaser trailer opens with a panoramic look at the Parkers’ living room, an exact replica of the way it appeared in the 1983 movie, and ends with Ralphie as an adult slipping on his signature plastic-rimmed glasses.
The film follows an adult Ralphie (Billingsley) in the 1970s, who returns to the house on Cleveland Street to deliver his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had growing up. With the same attention to real-life tone of the first, Ralphie reconnects with childhood friends, reconciles the passing of his Old Man and sows the seeds for the origins of the beloved holiday classic.
Ian Petrella, Zack Ward, Scott Schwartz and R.D. Robb also are reprising their roles from the original,...

While it’s much easier to gather with family this year, that doesn’t mean we can’t uphold some well-worn holiday traditions, like settling in on the couch with some hot cocoa to watch Christmas movies. Even if you’re not physically in the room with them, watch parties using integrated apps or Zooms or other virtual meetups means you can still have a collective, shared experience — just over the internet.
And if you are lucky enough to be in the same place as your family, you can spend time with your loved ones and cherish the fact that you’re able to be close to them Irl when so many people cannot be with theirs.

This tribute to director Bob Clark and the 1983 chestnut “A Christmas Story” was originally published Dec. 20, 2007 on the Variety blog “Littleton On the Air”
It’s that wonderful time of year, time for repeated viewings of the holiday pic that never, ever gets old, 1983’s “A Christmas Story.”
TBS is obliging with its annual 24-hour marathon of the pic, starting Monday, Christmas Eve, at 8 p.m. Et. My family’s “Christmas Story” DVD is well-worn — no matter how many times we’ve seen it, we crack up at the scene where Darren McGavin unpacks his “fra-gi-le” major award. We can pretty much recite this movie from start to “you’ll shoot your eye out” finish.
But this year the fun of the pic that perfectly balances the sweet ‘n’ sour ‘n’ silly of the season comes with a tinge of sadness for the memory of “Christmas Story” helmer Bob Clark,...

Hugh Hefner was a huge fan of the holiday classic “A Christmas Story” — so huge that he actually had a replica of the movie’s famed leg lamp in the dining room of the Playboy mansion year-round, and he would screen it at his movie night at the estate during the yuletide season.
“I think one of the reasons he liked this one is because it’s set in 1940, so it was set during the days of his youth,” said Jeremy Arnold, author of the new book “Turner Classic Movies: Christmas in the Movies,” who first saw the comedy at Hefner’s home in 2002.
The film’s star, Peter Billingsley, found himself talking about the movie with the Playboy founder at a screening. “He said, ‘We’ve seen your movie here frequently and we’re big fans.’ He was very warm and very, very welcoming.”

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look at Bob Clark‘s holiday classic, ‘A Christmas Story‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
‘A Christmas Story’ (1983)
Director: Bob Clark
Screenplay: Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown & Bob Clark based on the novel ‘In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash,’ by Jean Shepherd
I know there’s a lot of people out there who regret the commercialization of ‘A Christmas Story‘ and sure, it’s totally out-of-hand. There’s a live televised version of ‘A Christmas Story‘ that happened on TV recently, which is one of the more benign examples to occur. I’d be remissed if I didn’t bring up the egregious straight-to-dvd sequel they made a couple years ago to widespread scorn; if for no other reason than the fact that there already was a sequel to ‘A Christmas Story‘ out there!

These live televised musicals that NBC started have become the new craze. Now Fox is jumping in on the action and doing a live musical version of the classic 1983 film A Christmas Story, which is my favorite Christmas movie ever.
It was recently announced that Matthew Broderick is set to star in the live televised event as the adult version of Ralphie, who is the narrator of the story. I've gotta say... that's pretty perfect casting in my opinion. He's such a Ralphie-like kinda guy!
The narration in the original film was done by Jean Shepherd, who created A Christmas Story in 1966 with a short story that he wrote. The story revolves around a nine-year-old boy, who is hoping and wishing for the perfect Christmas gift... "a Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time."

Did you know that the new movie Vacation is based on a true story? Well, okay, techically it's a continuation of a series of movies that started off with a 1983 feature adapted from a short story that was based on real events. John Hughes wrote the source tale, titled Vacation '58, for National Lampoon magazine back in the late '70s, while he was primarily employed at a Chicago ad agency. The story was based on a cross-country road trip he took with his own family as a kid. It's not quite memoir because he changed the names and surely exaggerated a lot of the funnier bits, but it reads as real as something by humorist Jean Shepherd, who worked with similarly autobiographical material (and coincidentally also saw his stories turned into a hit...

The late Bob Clark is known for co-writing and directing 1983’s A Christmas Story, based on the short stories of Jean Shepherd. I was flipping through an old magazine and I came across this quote. "I remember the first person I ever laughed at while reading was Max Shulman." I might not have paid any more attention to it than I usually do to denture adhesive ads or reports of alien abductions, except that the person who said it was Woody Allen. And when the Woodman talks, people listen. Well, at least people in the person of me.
But Max who? I Googled away: 1950s writer, originally from Minneapolis, wrote the novel the groundbreaking TV sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis was based on. Yeah. Maybe you've already had your fill of holiday programming, but this is when it gets serious.
With Christmas coming at midweek this year, that still leaves several days for networks to offer signs of the season ... some of which have been shown already this year but still are hugely appropriate for viewing. And maybe even more so, the closer to the actual holiday it gets.
Zap2it has selected a sampling of some of the home-screen gifts being presented in the coming days.
"The Wizard of Oz" (Sunday, Dec. 22, TNT): It had a 3-D and IMAX retrofitting recently, but there's something comforting about going "Over the Rainbow" with the Judy Garland-starring 1939 classic at home.
"Home Alone" (Sunday, AMC): Young Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) makes things tough for thieves (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) who invade his house in this 1990 family favorite.

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise
I suspect that when most folks are asked what movie is most firmly ingrained in their lives, many would list The Princess Bride, The Godfather or even Scarface. For me it's my holiday favorite that I can watch the year round -- A Christmas Story. I never asked Santa for an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle like Ralphie (Peter Billingsley), but I did want a pink bunny suit -- even if it would mean that I would look like a "deranged Easter Bunny" in the words of Old Man Parker (Darren McGavin).
One of my little idiosyncrasies is throwing movie quotes into everyday conversation, and this film adaptation of the satirical recollection by late humorist and radio personality...

There's a menswear store on a quaint cobblestone street in my suburban New Jersey town whose Christmas window display each year includes a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a fishnet stocking. That no one thinks this is tacky or even unusual is a tribute to how remarkably pervasive "A Christmas Story" has become over the past three decades.
At the time of its release 30 years ago this week (November 18, 1983), the movie was a cult favorite at best. Since then, however, it's become the indispensable Christmas movie for a couple of generations of viewers, as essential a holiday staple as "It's a Wonderful Life." Tens of millions are expected to watch at least some part of the film when it airs 12 times in a row during the annual TBS "24 Hours of 'A Christmas Story'" marathon on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Is it too early for Christmas movies? Not if this weekend’s box office is any indication, with The Best Man Holiday giving Thor: The Dark World a run for its money. Also, it was pretty much this weekend 30 years ago that a little classic called A Christmas Story debuted in movie theaters nationwide. Today, Bob Clark’s beloved adaptation of Jean Shepherd’s autobiographical stories is a staple of the season. Back when it opened on November 18, 1983, however, it bowed in third place behind fellow newbie Amityville 3D and the ongoing hit The Big Chill. But it rose to first place in the following week, only to fall back down and eventually way out of the top ten by the very holiday in its title. More people saw Yentl on Christmas weekend that year than A Christmas Story. As is the case with most holiday movie favorites, this one really gained popularity and became canon through...
