In 1948, tickets to the Met Gala were $50 apiece. In 2024, a single entry fee for the exclusive social event was about $75,000. Despite the high cost, celebrities, designers, and the who’s who of NYC and beyond shell out for the gala, which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Since the ’70s, the annual affair has attracted household names wearing the most haute couture fashions — always adhering to the chosen theme. See some of the most out-there and iconic guests and looks at the Met Gala over the years.

Did Anna Wintour add more tables to this year’s Met Gala? Because the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art felt especially crowded on Monday evening, May 6, teeming with Hollywood A-listers wearing a plethora of artful looks. And while not everyone leaned into the evening’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” for the most part the stars acquitted themselves well in looks that ranged from quiet elegance to over the top and outrageous.
Even with the nature-centric theme, the night surprisingly was highlighted by some stars in neutrals. Nicole Kidman offered a great backstory for her black and white Balenciaga gown, while Cardi B served up the night’s best drama in a Windowsen black gown that almost spanned the width of the museum steps. Flesh-toned gowns likewise were abundant, including Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta and Lizzo in a custom floral-inspired corset gown by Paris-based designer Victor Weinsanto.

Colman Domingo opened up about the inspiration behind his 2024 Met Gala look, which he says was a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman and André Leon Talley.
Domingo was among many celebrities who walked up the steps of The Met to celebrate the new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” This year’s gala theme was “The Garden of Time,” and Domingo wore a cape that extended from his jacket and paired it with wide-legged pants.
“They both wore capes when they were at the Met,” Colman told E! at the event. “Everything I do, I feel like it’s gotta be for the culture. It’s gotta be more than just for me.”
He continued, “I wanted to honor these brothers who were here before me as well.”

When Cicely Tyson started crafting her 2021 memoir Just As I Am, her longtime friend and fashion designer, B Michael, began to conceptualize an idea for a book of his own, cataloging their working relationship together from the day the barrier-breaking actress first stepped foot in his atelier in 2005.
“She loved it and said that would be great and amazing, but [told the designer] ‘Help me finish my book first,’” B Michael recalls, laughing.
When Tyson passed away on Jan. 28, 2021, just two days after her memoir was published, B Michael put his book idea on the back burner.
Now three years later, Muse Cicely Tyson and Me: A Relationship Forged in Fashion, has come to fruition from publisher Harper Collins. Kevin Macdonald’s moving 2018 bio-doc, Whitney, did a great job of fortifying Whitney Houston’s legacy while wiping away the smear of the predatory celebrity culture that made a mockery of one of contemporary pop’s most exceptional talents during the worst and most public period of her drug addiction. Another price-of-fame subject, disgraced British fashion designer John Galliano, is a trickier prospect that does the director no favors.
If you come to this film looking for a brisk overview of his achievements in couture, you might find High & Low more than serviceable. Footage of shows, especially from Galliano’s big-budget tenure as creative director at Dior make for fabulous wardrobe porn, highlighting the haute theatricality and ravishing romance that turned him into a fashion rock star. But if you’re expecting the definitive closing leg of the redemption tour, it’s unlikely you’ll find this a persuasive argument...

In one of the silliest running gags of The Other Two’s third and final season, Cary (Drew Tarver) dates a Method actor whose commitment makes Jared Leto’s Suicide Squad antics look like child’s play. As Lucas (Fin Argus) slips from one role to the next, he inhabits each one 24/7 — adopting the personality, habits and even the backstory of whatever serial killer or Hallmark boyfriend he’s playing that week. It’s not until the finale that he stops working long enough for Cary to get a glimpse of the real Lucas, and when he does it turns out he’s not much of anyone at all.
Without a role to disappear into, Lucas is left to wander the forest naked and confused, so disconnected from his own identity that he’s surprised to learn he’s Australian. (“No wonder he books,” Cary mutters.) His booked-and-busy career is...

The fashion world is honouring the late Karl Lagerfeld in a big way. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on Friday morning that the theme for the 2023 Costume Institute Benefit, aka the Met Gala, will be “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”.
The announcement was made at Lagerfeld’s photo studio in Paris, which journalist Derek Blasberg noted has remained “untouched” since the designer and Chanel creative director’s 2019 death.
The upcoming exhibition will feature 150 of Lagerfeld’s designs from Chanel, Balmain, Patou, Fendi, Chloe and his own personal line. The pieces will be accompanied by Lagerfeld’s sketches.

“Alone Together” was originally reviewed out of the 2022 Tribeca Festival.
Katie Holmes turns out to be one of the best chroniclers of the Covid-19 lockdown to date: Her sophomore feature as a director, “Alone Together” (which she also wrote), captures many vivid details on the subject overlooked by even documentaries.
But Holmes’ artistic ambitions aren’t lofty, as she seems to have set her sights on Lifetime movie rather than Oscar bait.
The opening scenes are stunning. On March 15, 2020, as news alerts flood the airwaves, June (Holmes) ventures outside her building, on her way to an Airbnb upstate booked by her boyfriend, John (Derek Luke), to wait out the pandemic. She’s been told by her employer it should all blow over in two weeks. (Ha!)

André Leon Talley, a major influencer of style and fashion in the best sense of the word, died on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at the age of 73 in White Plains, New York. I ran into André at the Yigal Azrouël showroom a few years ago. I held the elevator door for him and the two of us had a lovely chat on style. He wanted to look in my shopping bag to see the green dress I had purchased that morning and gave it two thumbs up. It felt like the most normal thing to have a chat with André Leon Talley. That doesn't happen too often between total strangers in New York.

Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter moves from Venice into 579 theaters this weekend — the first in a welcome stream of specialty films from the Lido, Telluride and Toronto that could, perhaps maybe, buck up the struggling arthouse market this fall. The film is 90% certified fresh and hails from Focus Features, which presented one of the rare specialty hits of recent months, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.
That film came out in mid-July before the Delta Variant reached full sweep. It was released on nearly double the number of screens.
The Card Counter stars Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan. William Tell (Isaac) a military interrogator haunted by his past just wants to play cards. But his spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he’s approached by Cirk (Sheridan), a vulnerable, angry young man seeking help to get revenge on a military colonel (Willem Dafoe). ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Costume Designers Reveal Their Favorite Looks on the Film’s 15th Anniversary
“The Devil Wears Prada” turns 15 on June 30, but like any good fashion piece, it remains timeless.
Anne Hathaway plays Andy Sachs, a recent college graduate who has come to work at Runway, a high-fashion magazine overseen by haughty editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep. Emily Blunt co-stars as Andy’s colleague, Emily, with Stanley Tucci as Nigel, the magazine’s art director.
Costume designer Patricia Field was Oscar-nominated for assembling the film’s stunning wardrobe, from its magnificent array of coats to the selection of moody sunglasses. Assistant costume designer Tracy Cox, who worked with Field on the final season of “Sex and the City,” was relatively new to the job when he joined the team.
“I knew I was involved with something special because Meryl Streep was there,” Cox says. “When she came in and we had her fittings and picked out her wigs and all of that,...

Netflix's Halston unpacks the titular fashion designer's colorful life story throughout the highlights of his illustrious career. The miniseries, which stars Ewan McGregor as the icon, especially sheds a light on Halston's drug habit, which many in his inner circle believed to be an addiction at his height in the '70s. In Halston, he's first tentative about drug use, admonishing his assistant for taking speed. But by episode two, Halston's hookups start to become drug-laced affairs. But which ones did he take, exactly? While the men who offer Halston drugs never directly name the substance, it's very likely cocaine.
Along with using cigarettes, joints, and drinks, the real Halston also snorted cocaine regularly after trying it during his summers on Fire Island. He was known to frequent a famous club called Studio 54, where drug-fueled parties unraveled as the designer hung out with big names such as Liza Minnelli,...

André Leon Talley’s contributions to fashion are well known inside the hallowed halls of Vogue, but his exuberant personality and colorful style have made him a cultural figure in his own right. Cinephiles first became aware of the former Vogue editor-at-large when he stole scenes in 2009’s “The September Issue.” An omnipresent figure in shades at Anna Wintour’s side, Talley’s tossed off witticisms lightened the mood as he lamented a “famine of beauty.” Last year, Talley got his own dedicated silver-screen treatment in Kate Novack’s excellent documentary, “The Gospel According to André.”
Distributed by Magnolia Pictures to largely positive reviews, the “Gospel” fills in the gaps of how this fashion icon came to be; from his humble beginnings in the Jim Crow era South, to his Brown undergraduate thesis on Charles Baudelaire, to his early runway reporting in 1970s Paris and his tenure at Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine.

Trends come and go, but one thing has remained a constant in the fashion world for decades. Being on the cover of Vogue is a really big deal. Melania Knauss knew it when she was a beaming bride-to-be in 2005, making her Vogue cover debut in the $100,000 Dior gown she wore when she married Donald Trump. In preparation, the Slovenian model had gone to Paris Fashion Week with the magazine's editor in chief, Anna Wintour, and then-editor at large André Leon Talley, who helped her pick out her wedding dress. Trump had even proposed on the way to the 2004 Met Gala, the extravagant Costume Institute benefit Wintour has chaired every year...

Kate Novak’s doc looks beyond André Leon Talley’s florid persona to reveal a man of honesty, wit and huge resilience
André Leon Talley is a standout figure in fashion: a 6ft 6in African American dressed in kaftans and jewellery so big you can probably see it glittering from space. For years he worked as Anna Wintour’s right-hand man at American Vogue, but really what made him famous was the bling.
From a distance he appears faintly ridiculous, like a character from Zoolander. But with her thoughtful, unexpectedly serious film Kate Novak proves Talley’s doc-worthiness. He emerges here as a man of tremendous resilience whose outsider success paved the way for people of colour in the elitist world of fashion.

Chicago – He’s not a household name, but his influence has affected the closets of those households. André Leon Talley (“Alt”) is a New York City fashionista of the highest order, despite a background that would never predict that fate. But a person in the right place at the right time with the right work ethic can product magical results, and “The Gospel According to André” conjures that journey for Talley.
Rating: 3.5/5.0

The rest of the show is the life story – of an African American boy coming from the Jim Crow American South and driving the media of fashion – and the talking heads around that story, the cream...
