Cannes film festival
Seven world leaders – including Charles Dance’s dozy US president – are trapped in a forest in this amusing but bizarre apocalyptic comedy
Cate Blanchett has supplied the strangest moment of this year’s Cannes film festival; for Brits of a certain age, anyway. Her character reverently invokes the name of the late Roy Jenkins, Labour grandee and former chancellor of both the exchequer and Oxford University. Blanchett plays a fictional German chancellor called Hilda Ortmann who mentions Jenkins as the first president of the European Commission allowed to attend a G7 summit Perhaps in her next film Blanchett can do a big speech about Peter Shore.
Rumours is an amusing drawing-room absurdist comedy, co-written and directed by Canadian film-maker Guy Maddin with his longtime collaborators, the brothers Evan and Galen Johnson. The title is inspired by the 1977 Fleetwood Mac album, because of the emotional crises that are...

If laughter is the best medicine, comedy spots should be considered essential businesses, comedian and director Mike Binder said.
“I am so surprised that the governor and the mayor of the state and the city have not declared the comedy stores essential businesses. I think people need to laugh so hard and so bad,” he said during a showtime Panel on Thursday.
Binder, joined by comedy stars Bill Burr, Sebastian Maniscalco and Annie Lederman, spoke about the upcoming Showtime docuseries The Comedy Store.
Directed and executive produced by Binder, the five-part series looks at the long lasting legacy of Hollywood’s The Comedy Store. Featuring interviews with a number of the industry’s biggest jokers and deep looks into the tragedies and victories shared by the spot’s community of notable alumni, The Comedy Store examines how the Mitzi Shore’s Sunset club served as a launch pad for the...

Comedy clubs like Los Angeles’ storied Comedy Store should be allowed to reopen despite the pandemic, says director Mike Binder.
“I have to say, I am so surprised that the governor and the mayor of the state and the city have not declared comedy clubs an essential business. Because I really think it is. I think people need to laugh so hard and so bad,” said Binder, speaking to reporters on Thursday to promote his upcoming Showtime docuseries “The Comedy Store.”
According to Los Angeles County’s reopening plan, night clubs are considered one of the highest risk business and won’t be allowed to reopen until stage 4, along with large entertainment venues and sporting events.
“I know [The Comedy Store owner] Peter Shore has put together some incredible plans to keep people safe, distanced … I know it could be done,” Binder said. “They’ve refused everything, but I do think it’s really important,...

Artist Sam Taylor-Wood surprises us with an old-fashioned, affecting film exploring John Lennon's early years, writes Philip French
As composers, performers, producers and the subjects of documentaries, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr have made a remarkable contribution to the cinema over the years. The dominant figure, of course, has been Lennon. He's been impersonated by his fellow Liverpudlian Ian Hart in both Backbeat, Iain Softley's film about the Beatles in Hamburg, and The Hours and Times, Christopher Munch's picture about his 1963 trip with Brian Epstein to Barcelona, and more fleetingly in Todd Haynes's Bob Dylan movie I'm Not There. He's at the centre of a fascinating documentary on his political activities, The Us vs John Lennon (2006) and haunts the shadowy edges of The Killing of John Lennon, Andrew Piddington's 2006 portrait of his assassin, Mark Chapman. Now we have Sam Taylor-Wood's feature debut,...

Comedian Pauly Shore is suing his older brother over allegations he abused their elderly mother.
The Encino Man star has accused Peter Shore of improperly caring for their ill mother Mitzi, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease.
Mitzi has been "rendered susceptible to unscrupulous behaviour and other undue influence because of her condition", according to Shore's lawsuit obtained by RadarOnline.com.
Pauly has also accused his brother of improperly running their business venture, the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, which their mum founded.
The brothers and their mother are the sole directors of the venue, but the actor claims he was "improperly" removed from the board of directors by Peter, the company's chief executive officer.
Pauly is demanding his brother provide tax returns as well as financial reports from the last 36 months in a bid to correct the situation.
