Nearly 10 months after Ozark went out with a literal bang, showrunner Chris Mundy is giving the final word on that final (gun) shot. At the end of the Netflix crime drama’s series finale, released in April 2022, private investigator Mel Sattem (Adam Rothenberg) confronts Marty and Wendy Byrde (Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) at their home… only to find himself on the business end of a gun in the hands of Jonah Byrde (Skylar Gaertner), Marty and Wendy’s son. And after that last episode cuts to black, viewers hear a gunshot, leading some to wonder which characters in the scene met their maker. “Definitively in my mind, and anyone’s free to think whatever they want, but in my mind, he absolutely shot Mel, and Mel is dead, and that’s that,” Mundy said at an Ozark Q&a panel in Hollywood on Friday, February 17, per Variety. “I just...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the fourth and final season of “Ozark.”
At the final “Ozark” panel, the series creator and cast finally brought some clarity to the show’s final minutes and the demise of a fan-favorite character.
Speaking at the Netflix-hosted Q&a panel in Hollywood on Friday, the Emmy Award-nominated creator Chris Mundy divulged with his SAG-nominated actors, Jason Bateman and Julia Garner, exactly how and why the series ended with two surprise deaths in the final scenes.
Mundy explained that finalizing the last 14 episodes brought upon loads of creative strife, as he understood the need to stick to a thematic intention of exploring the Byrdes’ motivation of “building a myth” and how, as a result, they were ultimately “creating a curse.”
In regards to the final two deaths of the series, first with Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) and then with Mel Sattem (Adam Rothenberg), Bateman explained,...

Through Dec. 4, the Ahmanson Theatre is showing Danny Robins’ supernatural play 2:22 — A Ghost Story, starring Constance Wu, Finn Wittrock, Anna Camp and Adam Rothenberg. Directed by Matthew Dunster, the London hit centers on two couples who gather for dinner in a home that may be haunted and make a pact to stay up late to know for sure. THR sat down with the cast and asked whether they know for sure.

Spooky season will soon be in session at L.A.’s Center Theatre Group.
The nonprofit theater company has set Constance Wu, Finn Wittrock, Anna Camp and Adam Rothenberg to star in 2:22 — A Ghost Story, a four-person play described as an “intriguing, funny and scary supernatural thriller.” Previews at Ctg’s Ahmanson Theatre begin Oct. 29 with an official opening set for Nov. 4. The play will then run through Dec. 4.
Written by Danny Robins and directed by Matthew Dunster, A Ghost Story follows Jenny (Wu) who believes her new home is haunted while her husband Sam (Wittrock) isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, an old friend Lauren (Camp) and her new partner Ben (Rothenberg), and after a conversation about beliefs and skepticism, the foursome make a pact to stay up until 2:22 a.m. to know for sure.

It was “a hard way to go” for Marty and Wendy Byrde in the final four minutes and 28 seconds of Netflix’s “Ozark” but utterly gratifying. The 14th episode of the fourth and final season was helmed by executive producer and star Jason Bateman, stepping into the director’s chair for the first time this year.
In those final moments, we see that Mel (Adam Rothenberg) has broken into the Byrdes’ home. The viewer has just witnessed Ruth being killed by Camila. With the audience fixated on Bateman sitting at the table, the camera pans out to see Mel. A tension-filled monologue while holding the cookie jar containing the ashes of Wendy’s brother Ben (played by guest actor drama nominee Tom Pelphrey) is impossible to breathe through.

Cinematographer Eric Koretz was deep into work when the 2022 Emmy nominations were announced, and had no way of learning that he’d received a bid — his career-first — for shooting the fourth and final season of “Ozark.” “I was actually on set with no internet,” Koretz revealed to Gold Derby in a new webchat (watch our exclusive video interview above). “I found out a couple hours later — but it was over text, basically, when all the texts started coming in.”
One of three DPs to work on the 14-episode fourth season of the Netflix drama — which was split into two parts that debuted on January 21 and April 29, respectively — Koretz didn’t even board the show until halfway into its farewell installment, but went on to shoot a quartet of episodes from Part 2: “The Cousin of Death” (Ep. 8), “Pick a God and Pray” (Ep. 9), “You’re the Boss” (Ep. 10) and his nominated episode,...

From the very inception, music was indispensable to setting the tone on “Ozark” and making its crime-ridden world and morally complex characters come alive. So, for music supervisor Gabe Hilfer, there was absolutely an impetus to add a musical exclamation point as he and showrunner Chris Mundy were working on the Netflix drama’s fourth and final season. “It was a big focus,” exclaims Hilfer in a new webchat with Gold Derby. “[The show]’s not a musical, we don’t use hundreds of songs… but when we do, they’re very specific, deliberate and intentional, and they’re talked about and discussed behind the scenes.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The fourth season of “Ozark” was a unique one — and that’s not just because it was the show’s farewell installment. It was also the Netflix drama’s longest season ever with 14 episodes and split into two seven-episode blocks that debuted on January 21 and April 29, respectively. “We thought of it as two different seasons, just because people were going to experience it that way,” Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy tells Gold Derby in a new webchat. “When you pasted all [episodes] together, they had to make coherent sense… So, it was a little tricky. It’s one season, but it’s not, and it’s two seasons, but it’s not.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

It's hard to believe it, but Ozark has wrapped its run.
After four seasons of a pressure cooker-like environment, the Netflix juggernaut wrapped its run late last month.
Naturally, there are questions about whether the franchise could continue with a spinoff.
“It’s definitely something that people have talked about a bunch,” showrunner Chris Munday shared in an interview with TV Line.
“There’s nothing definitive. We’re lucky that people seem to really like the show so there’s obviously going to be some interest there.”
The shocking finale said goodbye to fan-favorite Ruth (Julia Garner), who was killed off.
Given the interest in that character, there had been rumblings pre-finale that Garner could reprise the role in a new series.
“There are still ways to stay inside the show and revisit things,” Mundy said.
“I’m sure people probably would’ve been happier if Ruth was out there.

This article contains spoilers for all of Ozark.
There are a lot of evil people on Ozark. The Navarro cartel was filled with your stereotypical drug villains. Morally corrupt federal agent Roy Petty (Jason Butler Harner) served as a hateable antagonist in the first couple of seasons. Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) was the type of old hag you love to despise. Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) showed the result of what the Byrdes would eventually become. But no person in the show was more frequently loathsome than Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney).
Wendy made decisions for four seasons that put her family and others in grave danger, even giving the go-ahead to the cartel to murder her own brother at the end of the third season. She was always ready to sacrifice anybody and everybody in the name of “getting out” and “saving her family”. Sounds a bit familiar, right? Wendy seemed...

Note: The following contains spoilers for the “Ozark” Season 4 Part 2 finale.
Planning a satisfying TV show ending is difficult, especially when a vast majority of the characters you’ve introduced throughout the series are dead. But luckily “Ozark” showrunner Chris Mundy had already come up with a version of the series finale ending way back during Season 2 of the Emmy-winning Netflix series.
“There’s a line in the opening episode of Season 2, where Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) are on the dance floor and it’s like his black tie gala and you catch up to it a later in the episode,” Mundy told TheWrap in a recent interview about the series finale. “They’re talking about the places they could move if they run away, and at one point Wendy suggests Hyannis Port and he’s like, ‘What are we the Kennedys now?’ and she’s like,...

This article contains spoilers for the final episode of “Ozark.”
Say this much for the final moments of “Ozark”: They speak to the show’s sense of its own importance.
After four seasons, the Byrde family’s saga came to its conclusion with the launch of the drama’s final set of episodes on Netflix — or, at least, the part of the story we as viewers see concluded. The implication of those last seconds is that Marty and Wendy, the amoral husband and wife played by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, will indeed accomplish everything they want, and will do so with the buy-in of their son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner).
In the finale, the Byrdes throw a charity gala that represents their emergence from the depths they’ve occupied to become, once more, legitimate citizens. After the event, their last real threat emerges: A private investigator (Adam Rothenberg) who reappears to confront the couple.

This article contains spoilers for Ozark season 4.
Throughout the entirety of Ozark, Marty and Wendy Byrde (Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) have repeatedly found themselves in unfathomable danger, only to escape it by throwing someone else under the bus. Their indirect death count is impossibly high, with most of the people who oppose them ending up in the grave. Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner), perhaps the biggest victim of the Byrde family’s wrath, realizes this and continually calls them a poison to everyone they touch. She warns people to stay away from the Byrde’s at all costs, something she is never able to do herself.
In fact, Ruth’s hotheadedness actually ends up being her downfall in this final seven-episode stretch of the show. When we last saw the show’s most popular character, she was headed out of the Byrde home with a shotgun, ready to take down...

The Byrde family makes one last effort to escape their criminal empire in the Season 4 Part 2 trailer of “Ozark.” The series will come to an explosive finish on April 29 when the final seven episodes debut on Netflix.
According to the official logline: “Marty and Wendy are rid of Helen and climb to the top of Navarro’s empire. They find another opportunity to get out of the Ozarks but some past sins won’t stay buried and the most dangerous threats come from blood.”
In the trailer, Marty (Jason Bateman) fears for the survival of his family as Ruth (Julia Garner) seeks revenge. “I’m just sick of having blood on my hands, Wendy. It doesn’t bother you?” Marty says, to which Wendy (Laura Linney) responds, “You’re so desperate to be the good guy.”

Netflix has released the official trailer for “Ozark” Season 4 Part 2, but if you’re fearful of spoilers you may want to hold off on watching — this one seems to potentially show a bit too much footage.
The fourth and final season of the Emmy-winning series was split in half, with the first batch of episodes dropping in January and leaving viewers on a whopper of a cliffhanger: Julia Garner’s Ruth Langmore, distraught by the murder of her cousin Wyatt, appeared to be on her way to murder new cartel boss Javier (Alfonso Herrera).
In the full trailer for Part 2, we see where that road leads. There are also rising tensions between Jason Bateman’s Marty Byrde and Laura Linney’s Wendy Byrde. “You’re so desperate to be the good guy,” Wendy tells Marty, while the two are clearly at the breaking point in their money laundering empire.

There are also rising tensions between Jason Bateman’s Marty Byrde and Laura Linney’s Wendy Byrde. “You’re so desperate to be the good guy,” Wendy tells Marty, while the two are clearly at the breaking point in their money laundering empire.

Ozark's endgame is in sight.
Netflix on Wednesday confirmed the second part of the final season of its hit crime drama will premiere sooner than you think.
The final seven episodes are set to launch on April 29 around the world, just three months after the first part.
We admit, we thought we'd be waiting until much later in the year for the final episodes, and after the conclusion to the first half, we're counting down the days to find out how all of this plays out.
"Marty and Wendy are rid of Helen and climb to the top of Navarro's empire," teases the logline.
"They find another opportunity to get out of the Ozarks but some past sins won't stay buried and the most dangerous threats come from blood."

Not quite two years will have passed between the release of “Ozark” Season 3 on Netflix and the upcoming premiere of Season 4 on January 21 — but for fans, that’s a very long time to wait to find out what is next for Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney).
Now at least fans have some clues. Netflix released a trailer January 6 for the first seven episodes of Season 4. (The second seven episodes will stream at a later date.) Here, Marty and Wendy seem poised to be free of their obligation to drug kingpin Omar Novarro — if they can just fulfill a few more small demands. Watch the trailer in the video below, which also teases a tense standoff with the FBI, more Julia Garner intensity, and Linney serving cool ruthlessness.

Netflix has debuted a trailer for Part 1 of the fourth and final season of “Ozark,” which premieres on Jan. 21.
The series stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as Marty and Wendy Byrde, who get entangled with the local criminals of the Ozarks in Missouri after moving there to continue their money laundering scheme. Season 4 will follow the couple after the killing of Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer), an attorney for the Navarro drug cartel. Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) brings Marty and Wendy further into the operation while they try to escape the Ozarks, but their past continues to haunt them.
“The Navarro cartel has been made aware that you intend to start producing heroin again,” Marty says to Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) in the trailer. “They have instructed us to warn you their response is gonna be quick, and it’s gonna be brutal.”
“We’re just the messengers here,” adds Wendy.

Jason Bateman dropped by Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” set on Thursday. Bateman was just down the hall rehearsing “Saturday Night Live,” so it wasn’t much of a commute — or a risk.
Among the topics the two discussed was the unfortunate fact that Bateman’s excellent Netflix thriller “Ozark” will be coming to a conclusion with Season 4, which will be divided up into two 7-episode runs.
“We do land the plane in a very satisfactory way,” Bateman assured the NBC host, who is a few episodes behind.
“You’re happy with it?” Fallon asked.
“Yeah,” Bateman, who also directs on the series, replied.
That’s all we can ask for. Beyond a change-of-heart about a Season 5 — you know, kind of like fellow Netflix drama “The Crown.”
Bateman, who plays accountant-for-the-cartel Marty Byrd on “Ozark,” then handed out a key money-laundering tip.

Other than The Walking Dead, AMC doesn't have any other unqualified hits that would be guaranteed renewal on broadcast network television. In fact, the cable network's second highest performer is the prequel, Fear the Walking Dead, which always runs a distant second to the original, in the Nielsen ratings race. Suffice it to say, the network could use a big hit. Enter the Dietland TV show. Does this new series, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and UnREAL executive producer Marti Noxon have more staying power than the average dieter? AMC is going off their diet. Vulture reports the network has cancelled Dietland after only one season.
The dark comey centers on Daisy Chain magazine ghostwriter, Plum Kettle (Joy Nash). As this perpetual dieter starts to broaden her perspective on self-worth and feminism, someone starts taking out men who have been accused of sexual abuse and assault. Now Plum is caught between two worlds, while she is still trying to make sense or her own life. The series also stars Julianna Margulies, Robin Weigert, Adam Rothenberg, Tamara Tunie, and Erin Darke.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for the Sept. 11 episode of “Castle Rock.”)
The final episode of “Castle Rock” runs two stories in parallel: the present action that has the Kid trying to convince Henry to help him, and the past, in which we finally see (some of) what happened to Henry when he was 12.
We’ve been getting tidbits of this story all season, partially because Henry doesn’t seem to remember all of it, and partially because he refuses to tell anyone what really happened. The broad strokes that everyone in Castle Rock knows are these: One day, Henry Deaver went into the woods with his adopted father, Reverend Matthew Deaver (Adam Rothenberg).

Later, Matthew was found at the base of a cliff, badly hurt from a fall and near death, and Henry had disappeared.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for the finale episode of “Castle Rock.”)
The final moments of the first season of “Castle Rock” wrapped up most of the plotlines of the show, but it also ended with a whole lot of ambiguity.
In last week’s episode, the Kid (Bill Skarsgard) explained his own identity and where he came from to Molly (Melanie Lynskey). The Kid claimed he was the child of Ruth (Sissy Spacek) and Matthew Deaver (Adam Rothenberg) from another, parallel reality — and that he’d been trapped in this world by Shawshank State Penitentiary Warden Lacy (Terry O’Quinn) for more than 15 years.
The Kid wanted Henry (Andre Holland) to take him to the woods, since Henry could see the gateway between the worlds that would allow the Kid to travel back to his home reality.
The episode ends with a time skip that finds that Henry didn...

(Note: This post contains spoilers from the Aug. 15 episode of “Castle Rock.”)
Hulu’s “Castle Rock” might have just given an explanation to why the fictional Maine town is the focus of so much supernatural spookiness in the universe of Stephen King novels.
The show, which is partially its own King-esque story and partially an adaptation of some of his spooky ideas and recurring themes, started down the path of explaining what the heck is going on — at least partially — in its Aug. 15 episode, “Filter.” The episode finds Henry (André Holland) heading into the woods after uncovering some old videos of trips he and his dad used to take out there, wondering if there might be answers from his past to find.

[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for “Dietland” Season 1, Episode 3, “Y Not.”]
When IndieWire first spoke to “Dietland” creator Marti Noxon about her new AMC dark comedy, she mentioned a number of influences on the show. But while the premise has elicited more than one comparison to a lady version of “Fight Club,” Noxon’s go-to inspiration was “The Wizard of Oz,” specifically in how it visually represented the journey of self-discovery for Plum (Joy Nash).
“When I kept talking about visual references, I was like, I don’t want it to be one of these gray shows,” she said. “I don’t want it to be all blue saturated. I want it to be like a technicolor. It has a kind of musical quality. There are drab places, but then there are these other places that are just hyper-colored. Plum starts in kind of Kansas, but where she ends up should be over the rainbow. It should be colorful,...
