- On March 12, 1917, Montgomery was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, suffering from kidney, bladder, and liver ailments. Surgery was done on March 20 but Montgomery soon took a turn for the worse and died in the hospital, with his partner Fred Stone at his side for most of his final week. The two were starring in a production called "Chin Chin" at the time Montgomery was stricken.
