Byron Houck attended the University of Oregon and became a professional baseball pitcher; he played for the Philadelphia Athletics in the American League (1912-1914), the Brooklyn Tip-Tops in the outlaw Federal League(1914), and the St. Louis Browns in the American League(1918); he had a lifetime won-lost record of 26-24, with an earned run average of 3.30. He played for some years in the minor leagues, most notably in the Pacific Coast League, where he pitched for a team owned by "Roscoe Fatty" Arbuckle; through that connection, Houck was introduced to Buster Keaton and started working behind the scenes as a cameraman.
