The literal translation of Cesare Pavese's novella "Tra donne sole" is either "Among Women Only" or "Among Lonely Women."
It is generally agreed that, in this film, Michelangelo Antonioni settled on the themes that would populate all his later films. These would come noticeably to the fore five years later in L'Avventura (1960), probably the definitive Antonioni film.
Unreleased in the US until 1963 where it was generally greeted with disappointment following the critical raves over L'Avventura (1960).
