The "John Wick" franchise isn't just a montage of John Woo-inspired gun-fu combat sequences. The series has used just about everything imaginable to craft intense action scenes, from dogs to, as was the case with "John Wick: Chapter 4," fast-moving vehicles. In fact, cars and other forms of transport have been utilized by franchise director Chad Stahelski throughout the four "John Wick" films, and not just to choreograph fight-scene style "car-fu" sequences.
All the way back in 2014's "John Wick," the titular hitman reluctantly returns to his former illicit lifestyle after his puppy is killed and his Ford Mustang Boss 429 stolen. That first entry in the saga of Baba Yaga saw Wick get revenge for the aforementioned pup killing, but his Mustang remained unaccounted for. Which is why, when "John Wick: Chapter 2" arrived, there was some unfinished business to take care of.

The "John Wick" series is known for subverting action movie tropes. It's part of what has made the Keanu Reeves-led films such a success, with the latest entry, "John Wick: Chapter 4," headshoting a new franchise box office record on its opening weekend. The saga of Baba Yaga has now officially passed the $1 billion mark at the box office, proving that "John Wick" is a bonafide blockbuster franchise.
But while a huge part of the films' success has been upending genre clichés and basically inventing a whole new action subgenre — think "Nobody," "Atomic Blonde," and "Sisu" — sometimes the films just lean into the standard tricks of action movie-making. Case in point: the famous "Baba Yaga" sequence in 2014's "John Wick." The inaugural entry in the franchise features so many classic John Wick moments, but the scene where Michael Nyqvist's Russian crime lord Viggo Tarasov brings his son, Losef...

"John Wick: Chapter 4" exploded into theaters back in March and almost immediately headshot a new franchise record with a $73.5 million debut. And Keanu Reeves' deadly hitman continued his assault on the box office over the next couple of months, eventually pushing the "John Wick" series into $1 billion territory and cementing its status as a blockbuster franchise to be reckoned with. So it shouldn't be all that surprising that Lionsgate is developing a fifth "John Wick" movie.
"What's that?" I hear you ask. "Didn't our beloved assassin perish at the end of 'Chapter 4'?" Well, technically, yes. But this is Hollywood, where no one is ever truly dead — especially if they make you a hell of a lot of money. Which is why it's no shock that during a Q4 2023 earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joseph Drake confirmed that...

While audiences are returning to theaters, it’s still important to know when and where you can watch great movies like Sisu online. Set in the last days of the Third Reich, Sisu is a lean, bloody flick about a war-veteran-turned-prospector who becomes embroiled in a desperate fight against a brutal SS regiment. Fans of John Wick will enjoy the bone-crunching action and fast-paced plot, even if its main character never utters a single line of dialogue—Sisu even boasts a skilled assassin nicknamed for a figure in Slavic folklore, though an arguably more appropriate one than John Wick‘s Baba Yaga). The most striking thing about Chad Stahelski's "John Wick: Chapter 4" is that there is a buttload of it. At a whopping 169 minutes, "Chapter 4" feels like a work print that has yet to be edited down, with every exposition and action sequence left in for good measure. As it turns out, the original cut of the film was actually closer to four hours, so it could have been a buttload-and-a-half.
As the action scenes go, "Chapter 4" has a shootout on horseback, an extended fight in and around a hotel in Osaka, a massive brawl in a Russian nightclub, and a one-two-three-punch climax which strung together a fight in the traffic around the Arc de Triomphe, a shotgun battle in a dilapidated building, and a fight up the 222 steps leading to the forecourt of Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre. It would be physically impossible for Keanu Reeves to keep up the laborious shooting schedule and rigorous action training necessary to make each "John Wick" installment more breathtaking than the last. James Cameron may feel a responsibility to continue making "Avatar" movies based on phenomenal box office success, but Reeves and director Chad Stahelski aren't necessarily beholden to their own iconic franchise. For the executives over at Lionsgate, on the other hand, it wasn't an easy decision to allow their invincible antagonist to finally put down his weapon and ride off into the sunset.
However, "John Wick: Chapter 4" absolutely delivered in every conceivable way with almost three hours of heart-pounding action, gorgeous locales, and a surprising amount of pathos. By the end, it felt only right to let John Wick finally rest, even if it meant an apparently finite death for the character.

Ever since he donned a pair of shades and floor-length trench coat and destroyed a lobby back in the bullet-riddled third act of "The Matrix," the combination of Keanu Reeves, cool clothes, and lots of guns has been box office gold. 2014's "John Wick" substituted the trench coat for a stylish suit and, despite a relatively modest global box office take of $86 million, launched one of the most successful action franchises of the 21st century.
"John Wick 2" doubled the first movie's box office gross, and "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" came close to doubling it again. Now, while "John Wick: Chapter 4" would be hard-pressed to double the previous movie's numbers again, it is looking at another franchise-best opening weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fourth "John Wick" film grossed almost $30 million on Friday (including $8.9 million from Thursday night previews) and is on track for a domestic debut north of $70 million.

South by Southwest is back! And all eyes are on…well, a lot of them are on the Oscars, and not necessarily all on the Austin film, TV, tech, and music festival.
It’s not to say SXSW isn’t bustling or active. In fact one source said attendance through Day 2 of the festival was significantly higher than last year. And strictly anecdotally, there’s a ton of people milling about the Austin Convention Center who are first-timers as well. It’s just that due to the unfortunate, out-of-their-control circumstances of the festival crossing over with the Academy Awards, sources who spoke to IndieWire throughout the weekend felt there’s fewer studios or industry professionals in attendance this year or others arriving and then quickly leaving. That’s not ideal for some films looking to generate buzz or even land a sale.

When Chad Stahelski and David Leitch made the switch from stunt work to directing with "John Wick" back in 2014, they gave rise to a whole new wave of action movies. From "Atomic Blonde" to "Nobody" to "Bullet Train," the "John Wick"-style action thriller has basically become a subgenre in and of itself. But there's nothing quite like the original, and since that 2014 debut, John Wick has been dispatching his enemies in unreasonably entertaining and inventive ways across a full trilogy of films.
Stahelski has been directing solo since "John Wick: Chapter 2," steering the Keanu Reeves-led franchise into ever more epic waters. As the titular hitman uncovers the scope of the underground criminal empire for which he once worked, the John Wick saga has become more ambitious with each successive film — even spawning some upcoming spinoffs with the Ana De Armas-starring "Ballerina" and TV series "The Continental.

The "John Wick" films scarcely disappoint in the realm of action, and that has a lot to do with the talent they bring into the fold with each project. The stakes have, naturally, mounted exponentially since Keanu Reeves' first outing as the Baba Yaga, making "John Wick: Chapter 4" the biggest yet — and meriting a massive ensemble in turn.
Personally, this is the most exciting "John Wick" project on grounds of casting alone. You've got returning players like Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Laurence Fishburne; there's a chance that Halle Berry might return as well, even if just for a cameo. (Wishful thinking? Maybe.) "Chapter 4" will also introduce Bill Skarsgård, Rina Sawayama, and Clancy Brown to the fray — but Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada might be the cast members garnering the most buzz ahead of the film's March 2023 release. Yen and Sanada are both heavy hitters in their own right, so...

Blasting into the mainstream as Rey in 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Daisy Ridley instantly became an exciting new presence in the world of movies. We don't need to wade into the idea of whether or not she qualifies as a movie star since the discourse around that subject has become obnoxious recently, but when you watch her on screen, it's undeniable she has "it" -- that elusive X-factor that draws you in as an audience member and makes you want to see more of what she's doing.
It's now been almost a full eight years since she became a household name. With her newest movie, "Sometimes I Think About Dying," playing at the Sundance Film Festival, it's time to take stock. What's going on with Daisy Ridley these days and does her latest movie do her justice?

Capelight Pictures has acquired all rights for Germany and German-speaking Europe for the movie while Garsu will release the film theatrically in the Baltic States. Purple Plan has picked up rights for Vietnam and Singapore, and the rest of Southeast Asia rights went to Suraya Filem.

“If you want peace, prepare for war”, the title of this latest outing for Keanu Reeve’s un-killable hitman John Wick is taken from this very adage and it is most appropriate. As the “Baba Yaga” is back and in his greatest fight yet. When retired, recently widowed, master assassin John Wick opened the floodgates of wrath upon those who stole his car and brutally killed his puppy (his last hope at a loving companion in a time of grief and final gift from his late wife), who would ever have thought we would get where we are now. Not only have the films led a renaissance and long-overdue appreciation of star Keanu Reeves, they have secured themselves a place in history, as the best action franchise in decades and in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, director Chad Stahelski does the seemingly impossible by raising the bar.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is a gunsmoke hazy, bloody-knuckle ruthless, impossibly badass Wickian continuation. Every offered and foreseeable ass is proficiently kicked. Or karate chopped. Or headshot combo’d. Or shotgun blasted into oblivion. Or attack dog mauled. Or body-slammed through glass. Or swordplay carved. Or pulverized. Or…you catch my drift. Director Chad Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad are three films into their action spectacle franchise, and each has raised the last’s ante. More of the same? Yeah, I’m thinking John’s back…again.
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) finds himself “Excommunicado” on the streets of New York City after killing Santino D’Antonio on Continental grounds. All card-holding rights revoked, blacklisted by Continental employees, and $14 million placed on his head. Can someone with Wick’s assassination skills survive against waves of contract killers hungry for his bounty? Especially while still recovering from his John Wick: Chapter 2 injuries?...

Hell hath no fury when a woman is scorned, and to curb her from destroying the world, we have Hellboy, a demonic beast-turned superhero, who secretly works for the Bprd (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) to keep the world safe from paranormal threats. That's the story in a nutshell, of Neil Marshall's film, which is based on the Dark Horse Comics' character, Hellboy.
Set in England, the story is not as simple as it sounds in the above one-liner. The lady in question is the Blood Queen Nimue (Milla Jovovich), an evil and wicked sorceress who was killed by the mighty King Arthur. Subsequently, her dismembered body was packed in caskets and buried in different parts of the country.
Now centuries later, while Hellboy is busy hunting giants in the English countryside, he confronts a decaying witch called Baba Yaga and reconnects with the young psychic Alice (Sasha Lane...

We've already cleared up who exactly Ghost is in the new Ant-Man and the Wasp movie, but if you've already seen it, you're now probably wondering this: what the heck is a Baba Yaga? If you remember, when Scott Lang (otherwise known as Ant-Man) reunites with his crew to discuss Ghost, computer hacker Kurt compares her strange powers to that of a legendary figure called Baba Yaga. If you've never heard of Baba Yaga, you no doubt wondered if the reference was total invention - some witch-like figure, as Kurt describes. However, it turns out that Baba Yaga is very real - at least, according to Russian folklore.

Last week we heard that Milla Jovovich was in in final talks to join a new version of Hellboy, based on the comic book character created by Mike Mignola. The movie's title has since been shortened from Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen to Hellboy and now we're hearing rumors about other characters who may be appearing. In the comics, Hellboy is associated with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, which fights various occult threats. According to Splash Report, B.P.R.D. members Abe Sabien, Alice Monaghan and Major Ben Daimio will all appear in the new Hellboy, along with Baba Yaga the witch, King Arthur and Merlin, as well as "Gruagach, a fairy creature that looks like a pig and is a vengeful adversary of Hellboy." Of those characters, only Abe Sabien...

Some additional information has surfaced regarding director Neil Marshall's Hellboy reboot. That info involves some of the characters that we'll reportedly see in the movie. These characters are on top of David Harbour's Hellboy, Ian McShane's Professor Broom, and Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen, who is the main villain.
We recently learned from creator Mike Mignola that the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) would play a part in this new movie but that it would put the main focus on the title character. There are several members of the B.P.R.D. team, and Splash Report reveals the team members who will be involved with this new reboot. Here are the details that their inside source offered them:

Arguably horror is the most symbolic of film genres, as it relies heavily on senses and imagery to convey suspense and the moral message of the story. The mark of successful horror films as seen in the last few years such as The Babadook, Don’t Breathe, and this year’s sensation Get Out, have managed to balance tone and exposition well – paving the path for more sophisticated endeavours. Sadly, Caradog W. James’ Don’t Knock Twice seems to be taking backward steps down that path, in what can only be described as a juvenile and slapdash piece of cinema.
The film entails American sculptor Jess (Katee Sackhoff), reuniting with her teenage daughter Chloe (Lucy Boynton) who’s living in a foster home. Jess invites Chloe to come live with her but distraught at her mother’s abandonment, the latter refuses. That night Chloe and her boyfriend Danny...

Beware of the Baba Yaga.
The myth, the man and the legend of The Boogeyman returns in John Wick: Chapter 2.
Keanu Reeves return to play the legendary hitman from the surprise hit of 2014. He is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rom where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers.
Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, John Leguizamo and Bridget Moynahan return for this sequel. The newcomers are Common, Riccardo Scamarcio and Ruby Rose. The movie is directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad.
Lrm had a sit-down interview with actor Keanu Reeves late last month to discuss the action, weapons training and working with his co-stars for the film.
John Wick: Chapter 2 is out in theaters today.

When John Wick was first introduced to the moviegoing masses three years ago, co-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch did a remarkable job of establishing the mythos of Keanu Reeves’ assassin. Often referred to as the Boogeyman and/or Baba Yaga, even when Reeves wasn’t on the screen characters spoke of his elusive hitman in hushed whispers, as though they were fearful of summoning the devil himself. The truth, however, was much worse.
Fast forward to 2017 and we’re on the verge of welcoming Keanu Reeves back to the action scene via John Wick: Chapter 2, and with a February 10th release date fast approaching, Coming Soon has premiered a series of new stills featuring old allies (Ian McShane’s Winston), new adversaries (Ruby Rose’s Ares) and a cute canine companion. I've got four impressive short films for you to check out today. The shorts were beautifully made by Polish animator Tomasz Bagiński and the modern stories they tell are based on Slavic legends. The films range from 13 to 30 minutes, so it will take some time to get through, but it's worth it. I included the title of each film along with a Google translated version of each synopsis:
Basilisk
From the sea to the Tatra Mountains open the gates of hell. It is not known who is behind this, but I know who it stepped: Bogus Kolodziej and his loosely affiliated with the reality of Uncle Eugene. The two police officers look hard in the eye prastaremu danger, and even collide with it through the Polonaise!
Dragon
Castle Krak and its inhabitants are in danger. The city is threatening dragon, which, however, does not resemble at all the legendary monster.

While we fully expect John Wick: Chapter 2 to be another installment of the Keanu Reeves show – they don’t call his relentless hitman Baba Yaga for nothing – Lionsgate and director Chad Stahelski have pulled together a commendable roster of supporting players.
One name that immediately springs off the page, of course, is Laurence Fishburne, and from the Nycc teaser, it seems the actor will have a bone to pick with his old Matrix confidant. Also included in the gallery above are new looks at Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose and Riccardo Scamarcio’s goon tip-toeing gingerly through a hall of mirrors. One thing’s for sure: though Chad Stahelski has taken over at the helm for Chapter 2, the 2017 sequel is just as stylish – if not more so – than its hardboiled original.

This review is an updated version of our review of the PC version and the game’s two Dlc packs.
Some people might dismiss it as yet another action-adventure title, but I still hold great respect for Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of the Tomb Raider series. Rebooting a series is difficult enough, but when you’re talking about Tomb Raider, a series that has such a long and illustrious history, the stakes are that much higher.
Tomb Raider (or Tomb Raider 2013 as some might call it) played it safe in many ways. Drawing inspiration from other games such as Uncharted, the rigid controls and less-than-fluid gunplay were ditched in favor of more freeform traversal and a much more manageable combat system, with an emphasis on melee and Lara’s now trademark bow and arrow.

Jessica Oreck brings sylvan stories of the Slavic forests to life in this part-animated meditation on haunted woodlands
New York documentary-maker and animal-keeper Jessica Oreck manages a well-attuned act of cultural ventriloquism in this nutritious cine-essay looking east for inspiration. Just as the majestic course of the Danube prompted a search for the roots of western culture in The Ister (2004), here the vastness and darkness of Slavic forests draw Polish-narrated reflections on the nature-culture boundary, interspersed with animated segments from the Baba Yaga fairytale. Dampening the recorded sound on the real-life excerpts (lumberjacks, Soviet-style towerblocks, a wedding) that are used as visual wallpaper, Oreck makes eastern European – or rather, human – life seem otherworldly. Occasionally, this hauntological stream flows too quickly, and the insight gets diluted. At its best, however, the imagery cleanses and reinvigorates the ideas in play: a sequence in a headstone-filled forest seems to touch on the defeat...

If our first look at John Wick: Chapter Two found Keanu Reeves’ one-man reign of terror dressed to kill, new pics surfacing online today draw attention to Wick’s new canine companion.

Baba Yaga, the Boogeyman – whatever moniker you place on Keanu Reeves’ stone-cold assassin, John Wick is not a man to be trifled with. Two years ago, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski’s directorial debut drove home that point with style, introducing moviegoers to an action hero that was as ferocious as he was unforgiving, hunting down the men responsible for killing his puppy – and, by effect, the last remaining memory of his late wife – and picking them off one by one.
Borrowing elements from martial arts films and even anime, John Wick was a true breakout hit, and after garnering $80 million plus at the international box office, we now arrive at John Wick: Chapter Two.

Speaking to Ps Blog, Franchise Creative Director Noah Hughes revealed that the aforementioned Blood Ties chapter will welcome players to Croft Manor, a residency steeped in memories and the rich history of the Croft name. It’s part of Square’s way of ushering in Tomb Raider‘s 20th anniversary,...

Contrary to claims that Crystal Dynamics had canned development on the PS4 port, GameStop Italy has listed Rise of the Tomb Raider for release on Sony’s current-gen system on October 11.
First spotted by the folks over at NeoGAF, the listing has now been taken offline, but you can find a screengrab below that also indicates the PlayStation 4 version will come tethered with a full, $60 price tag.
What’s interesting is that, despite Crystal rolling out numerous Dlc packs for the action-adventure sequel, there’s no mention of whether Rise of the Tomb Raider will launch a comprehensive Game of the Year edition for those on PS4. For reference, those add-ons included both Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch and the supernatural frightfest, Cold Darkness Awakened.
Neither Crystal Dynamics nor publisher Square Enix released an official statement on the matter, so chalk this up as a rumor for now.

I have to admit, despite the rather questionable value proposition so far, most of the downloadable content for Rise of the Tomb Raider is at least trying to do something different, something off the beaten path. The last narrative focused Dlc, titled Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, drew elements from traditional Slavic folklore; something you might not expect to see in your typical triple-a, blockbuster game.
For better or for worse, the final piece of Dlc follows the same path as the Baba Yaga Dlc, by dropping you in a new side story with the same mechanics intact. Cold Darkness Awakened whisks Lara away to a new section of the wild Siberian landscape, specifically to a run down Cold War era research station. Due to a botched science experiment by a Soviet scientist, a horrible affliction has spread among the nearby Trinity soldiers (for those who need a reminder,...

Developer Crystal Dynamics has confirmed plans to roll out Cold Darkness Awakened, the final piece of Dlc for Rise of the Tomb Raider, across Xbox One and PC.
Included as part of the sequel’s Season Pass, there’s no word yet how much the add-on will cost as a standalone download. What we do know is that it’ll be available to purchase via the Xbox Marketplace, Steam or, alternatively, Microsoft Windows 10 storefront.
It looks set to be Lara’s darkest adventure yet, too. Arriving on the heels of January’s Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch expansion, Cold Darkness Awakened thrusts our battle-worn heroine into a brutal fight with infected enemies. There’s also mention of a wave-based mode, and you can catch a brief glimpse of Miss. Croft in action via the clip above.
Per Crystal Dynamics:
“Decommissioned during the Cold War, a dormant weapons research base has been breached,...
