Gwyneth Paltrow explained the origins of how one of the hottest new Goop products on the market, the vagina-scented candle, came into existence on Thursday’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
“Goop released a product this week that got a lot of attention. It’s already sold out. I would love you to explain it,” Meyers said, which made Paltrow nod knowingly, put a hand to her face, and giggle.
“Well, it’s a candle. It’s called ‘This Smells Like My Vagina,'” Paltrow said.

“It started as a joke,” she continued, explaining that she was with her perfumer, Douglas Little, when she smelled “this beautiful thing.”

Vampyros Lesbos screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (February 6th and 7th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117)
I can’t believe after all these years I’m finally getting to see a Jess Franco movie on the big screen. This weekend at The Hi-Pointe Theater, Andy at Destroy the Brain is offering up one the late Spanish director’s most noteworthy and beautiful films, Vampyros Lesbos, as part of the Late Night Grindhouse Midnight series.
I first discovered the captivating allure of Jess Franco as a child when his Count Dracula (1970) and Attack Of The Robots (1966) would constantly air on the creature feature syndicate. Even as a kid, I was captivated by Franco’s hypnotic, dreamy style and I can remember being puzzled by a narcotic quality I wasn’t used to. It was when VHS tapes were introduced in the early ‘80s that I really sought out his work.

What can I say about the cannibal subgenre that stormed Euro cinema during the 70′s and 80′s? I love ‘em. I love ‘em when they’re good. I love them when they are not so good. I love them when they are an excuse to put naked women on the screen and cover them in Crayola paint (or reasonable knock off). There are very few that I dislike and most of the ones I dislike came about toward the end of the late 80′s as knock-offs of the best knock-offs that the subgenre ever produced. I’m looking at you Green Inferno (not the soon to be released Eli Roth homage picture either). Today we’re here to discuss Cannibal Terror, a Euro-Cine picture distributed by Severin Films and full of exploitation gold. Hope you brought your appetites because 1980x is going to the jungle, hungry, horny and ready to...

Sad news from Spain. Legendary director Jesús Franco Manera, aka Jess Franco, aka Clifford Brown and a couple dozen more pseudonyms, often took from the names of the American jazz musicians he so admired, has died at the age of 82. Franco suffered a stroke last week from which he couldn’t recover.
His Erotic Rites Of Frankenstein featured a shrieking, silver-skinned Frankenstein’s monster relentlessly whipping a man and a woman tied together over a bed of spikes. It was but one of countless sublime images from the output of the most prolific Exploitation director of all-time (yes, that includes Corman). With a repertoire of over 200 titles, Franco enriched the world of Eurohorror/Exploitation by writing, directing, and scoring a vast variety of films, including masterpieces such as Female Vampire, Count Dracula, Faceless, Night Of The Bloody Judge, Eugenie De Sade, and Venus In Furs, an epic amount of art,...

Some truly sad news out of Spain this morning as the horror genre mourns the passing of one of its most prolific filmmakers: Jess "Jesus" Franco.
As reported by El Pais, the word broke today, where Kike Mesa, director of the 2007 documentary Jess Franco: Way of Life, announced Franco's passing early this morning at the age of 82.
Franco's output was simply staggering, having helmed nearly 200 films ranging from shorts to features (and many uncredited works as well). He is perhaps most known for the 1971 erotic vampire opus Vampyros Lesbos (1971), which focused on a vampire's efforts to seduce a young office worker into the world of undead and erotic delights. More of Franco's most impressive works are The Awful Dr. Orloff (1962), The Blood of Fu Manchu (1968), Exorcism (1975), Bloody Moon (1981) and Faceless (1988).
Mr. Franco was never perhaps as well-regarded as he should've been among his peers. His films were often derided...

This month, Redemption films brings us two remastered Blu-Ray HD transfers of cult sexploitation director, Jess Franco, both starring his wife, and umm, f*ck muse, Lina Romay. The first, Female Vampire (aka Erotikill, 1973), is the most lauded of their frequent pairing, if lauded is indeed an appropriate word to describe the reverie the title has for Franco fans. Indeed, it has elements that do sometimes justify an article in ‘Video Watchdog’ written by Tim Lucas, which asserts that this title is “one of the most erotic and transgressive works in the genre.” To each his own, but this is clearly overly generous hyperbole.
Most will come away feeling more like we’re all just humoring the director’s Ted Nugent sized obsession with sex. The other is the 1974 film Exorcism (aka Demoniac), that, at best, is a chore to sit through, one of the hundreds of copycats spawned by...

I know what you’re all saying how come It Came From 1980 X is doing yet another film outside of the 80′s? Well, the feature film this week is Demoniac. It’s a Jess Franco aka Jesus Franco film from 1974 and released under many different titles. One is Exorcism. Another is L’Eventreur de Notre-Dame. In each of its incarnation and releases in each nation the film has seen a different cut. The version that I discuss tonight is the Wizard Home Video release from the 1980′s rather than the original cut with all its hardcore and violent goodness. It’s also not the more pure 1979 release. This is truly the product of 80′s cutting and hey, we had to talk about Jesus on Easter even if all the good hardcore bits have been cut out and the violence is Made-For-tv ready.

Legendary Brazilian filmmaker Jose Mojica Marins - aka Coffin Joe - was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday July 25th 2009, at the Fantasia Film Festival's Canadian Premiere of his latest film, Embodiment Of Evil, co-written by festival alumnus Dennison Ramalho (Love For Mother Only). The award was a gold-plated Lovecraftian statue made by Montreal artist Rick Trembles (Motion Picture Purgatory), and Marins arrived on stage in a coffin!
Embodiment Of Evil is the long-awaited third installment in the 'Coffin Joe Trilogy', its predecessors being At Midnight I Take Your Soul (1964) and This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse (1967). This gets confusing when one considers that The Strange World Of Coffin Joe (1968) does not contain the titular gravedigger as a character in the film, while other Marins films - such as Awakening Of The Beast (1970) and The Bloody Exorcism Of Coffin Joe (1974) do have plots involving the character,...

Jess Franco, who is perhaps the world’s most prolific living filmmaker, will be honored at the Xxiii Goya Awards Ceremony on February 1st, 2009. Franco will receive a Goya award, which is the highest award issued by the Spanish Academy of Art and Cinematographic Sciences. Much of the popular emphasis on Franco’s work has been on erotica or horror (Eugenie, Vampyros Lesbos, Exorcism, Bloody Moon) but his vast filmography includes action, science fiction, thrillers and mysteries. In addition to working with such creative forces as Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom, Orson Welles and Klaus Kinski, Franco single handedly kicked off the women-in-prison genre with his film 99 Women. Franco has not always worked with the biggest budgets but he has always been a truly original and valuable talent. Check beneath the fold for a video slideshow highlighting over 100 of Franco’s films.
