Parting is such sweet sorrow. After more than a decade of laughter, thrills, and some great tunes, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy has finally coming to an end. The live-action cinematic adventures of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) will close out with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," launching into theaters on May 5, 2023, and audiences should be prepared to bring tissues. Gunn has promised that the trilogy-ender is a real tear-jerker, because some of the Guardians are going to end up six feet under.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will follow the Guardians on their own for the first time since the tragic events "Avengers: Endgame", and they'll be battling the High Evolutionary (the eternally excellent Chukwudi Iwuji), an evil scientist who probably had something to do with Rocket's experimental and painful origin.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is an enigma—a wild swing from Marvel Studios that has put an almost inordinate amount of pressure on director Peyton Reed’s shoulders. Not only has the filmmaker been tasked with delivering a serious, tone-changing sequel to two of the MCU’s funniest (and arguably most overlooked) movies, but also launching the next phase in the Multiverse Saga by introducing a new Thanos-level threat to mass audiences. Considering how much is on the line, it’s no exaggeration to call Quantumania the most important Marvel movie since Avengers: Endgame. Not bad for the little guy…
If you’ve not been closely following Marvel’s every move, you may be surprised to find that studio head Kevin Feige has put so much weight behind an Ant-Man movie. After all, Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp were both palette-cleansers following major Avengers instalments, acting as comedic...

Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most successful and charismatic actors in Hollywood. He’s played numerous characters over his multi-decade career, including some of the most popular in film history. As of late, many audience members recognize him from his iconic portrayal of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While this was many people’s first exposure to both the character and this casting, Jackson actually “played” Fury almost a full seven years before he appeared at the end of Iron Man.
A series of Marvel comics used Samuel L. Jackson’s likeness for Nick Fury
In late 2000, Marvel Comics began a new line of comics known as the Ultimate Universe. These aimed to be a modern take on classic characters without the decades of backstory that frequently make comics inaccessible to new readers. James Cameron’s blockbuster “Avatar: The Way of Water” has overtaken James Cameron’s other blockbuster “Titanic” as the third-highest grossing movie in history at the international box office.
The sci-fi sequel has now generated 1.538 million overseas, trailing only James Cameron’s other blockbuster “Avatar” (2.1 billion) and “Avengers: Endgame” (1.9 billion) in terms of international ticket sales. Cameron, unfortunately, didn’t direct “Endgame” so he’s only responsible for three of the four biggest international releases of all time.
The mega-budgeted “The Way of Water” has resonated across the globe, with 636 million at the domestic box office and 2.174 billion worldwide. On a global scale, the follow-up film ranks as the fourth-highest grossing movie in history following “Avatar” (2.92 billion), “Avengers: Endgame” (2.7 billion) and “Titanic” (2.19 billion). It’ll likely pass the global tally for “Titanic” in the next week or so. Like the original “Avatar,” ticket sales for the sequel have been fueled by Imax and 3D screens,...

Warner Bros./New Line’s “Don’t Worry Darling” is finally hitting theaters this weekend with a low break-even point and a good chance to turn a modest profit at the box office — but it also faces weak reviews and one of the most turbulent marketing campaigns in recent memory.
Independent projections have Olivia Wilde’s thriller starring pop star Harry Styles and Florence Pugh opening to 18 million to 20 million, with Warner Bros. projecting a 17 million start from 4,000-plus locations. With a reported budget of 20 million, it should be easy for this film to make back its money even with a marketing spend highlighted by a splashy premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
But how well it performs depends on a lot of unknown factors. Styles, who has had small roles in films like “Dunkirk,” is an unproven draw as a lead film star despite his massive popularity as a singer...

After months of pandemic-wary patrons and tepid numbers, this year of recovery for the domestic box office is at least going out with a bang. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” webbed up a truly mind-boggling $121.5 million on Friday from 4,336 locations, putting itself on the path toward a projected $242 million opening weekend.
That’s a performance the likes of which haven’t been seen since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” which hit a $156.7 million opening day, months before the world had even heard about Covid-19. Not only is “No Way Home” the first pandemic-era film to surpass the $100 million mark in its first weekend of release, but its success outmeasures the parameters of a pandemic-era box office in general. The film scored the second highest opening day in the history of the domestic box office. The $121.5 million single-day total also measures up as the highest December opening ever and a franchise-best for Sony’s “Spider-Man” series,...

Since movies started in the late 1800s, there have been countless of trends and eras that have come and gone in Hollywood. There’s the Silent Era, which dominated 1911 to 1926. Following the transition to sound, Westerns were the hot genre through the 1930s till 1960. Or the era of black films, traditionally known as film noir during the 1940s and 50s. Now, we’re living in the age of superhero movies which started in the early 2000s and has continued to go strong thanks due to the massive success of Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has effectively kept its plot details covered under a magic cloak of secrecy, but the time for touting approaches, especially as its direct predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, hits theaters this weekend. Consequently, a tradition for Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole pictures has just been fulfilled with a grand unveiling of the 2022-scheduled sequel’s tie-in toys, providing previews of unseen characters and costumes.
Hasbro Toys is now teasing the Marvel Legends 6” scale action figure line’s wave of tie-in toys for Multiverse of Madness. Among the various surprises, the preview provides a potentially profound revelation with a build-a-figure of Rintrah, a somewhat obscure green Minotaur-like sorcerer from the pages of Marvel’s Doctor Strange comics, seemingly brought to live-action glory for the movie, as the plastic suggests. Oddly enough, Elizabeth Olsen’s returning post-WandaVision Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch is nowhere to be found in this wave.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline was hard to keep track of before a universe-changing event occurred in Avengers: Endgame, prompting the main chronology of the series to skip five years ahead mid-movie. Now we’re on the other side of “the Blip,” and the five-year time jump it prompted, but what does that mean for the latest MCU movies and TV shows, including Spider-Man: No Way Home? Let’s break it down, year by year.
MCU: 2018
Endgame begins in 2018, not too long after the events of Infinity War where half the universe was “blipped” out of existence with a snap of Thanos’ fingers.
MCU: 2019-2022
While we have gotten some glimpses into life in the MCU during the Blip, for the most part, none of the MCU stories take place during this time. Many have compared this fictional period to the real-life experience of living during a pandemic, especially during...

Hawkeye Episode 5
It’s Yelena Belova’s world, we just live in it. Or maybe it’s Wilson Fisk’s. Either way, the two characters everybody’s gonna be talking about after Hawkeye episode 5, “Ronin” for once, aren’t Clint Barton or Kate Bishop. It’s a “light on Easter eggs” kind of episode, but there’s still some cool connections to be made. And as always, we’d love to hear from you about anything we might have missed!
Black Widow We get a lot of ties to this year’s Black Widow movie, and not just because of all the wonderful Florence Pugh screen time in the episode, either. In particular, the cold open plays almost like an epilogue to Black Widow, and it could just as easily have been...

Like so many, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers grew up loving Spider-Man — from the animated TV series to the action figures to, as they became adults, Sam Raimi’s live-action movies starring Tobey Maguire. But when the screenwriting team were recruited to work on 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” starring Tom Holland, roughly six weeks before production, their attention wasn’t on the web-slinger. It was on the film’s villain, Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton).
“I think everyone knew that the villain needed some help,” says Sommers. “We definitely worked on that quite a bit.”
Thankfully, McKenna and Sommers’ efforts on “Homecoming” ended up becoming a five-year odyssey with the friendly neighborhood web-slinger. They’re the sole credited screenwriters on 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and the hotly anticipated “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which opens worldwide Dec. 17 and aims to bring at least this chapter of Peter’s journey to a close.

Midway through “Ronin,” Kate finds herself across her kitchen table from Yelena Belova, terrified and confused to be sharing mac and cheese with a trained Black Widow assassin who tried to kill her and Clint earlier that evening. With two episodes left, Hawkeye has a lot of ground left to cover. Exclusive: Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is activating mega presales in international box office markets. Due to begin offshore rollout on December 15, just ahead of domestic’s December 17 debut, the Jon Watts-directed installment has set all-time records in multiple markets for the first 24 hours, and has caused some ticketing websites to crash. We’ve heard tell of fans heading to local cinemas to stand in line for advance buys when they couldn’t get them online.
Awaited with a fever pitch, the Tom Holland-starrer, for example, took $7M in Mexico during the first 24 hours tickets were available last week. That’s a new milestone, coming in 40% above Avengers: Endgame. Other markets to score the best-ever presales in the first full day include the UK, Spain, Brazil and Central America.

One of the first things you notice when watching the new Marvel series Hawkeye is the time and place in which it is set.
The show is located in New York City, and the time is some point after the events of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far from Home — meaning it’s taking place at the end of either 2024 or 2025, since the former took place in 2023 and the latter in the summer of 2024. And yes, we said “the end” of whichever year it’s in, because as one can glean pretty quickly, Hawkeye takes place just a few days before Christmas.
Yes, for the first time since 2013 — when Iron Man 3 was the first and, to date, last entry to take place during this part of the year — a Marvel Cinematic Universe story is set at Christmas time.

The Wheel of Time is off and running for Prime Video.
The highly-anticipated TV adaptation launched last week with a three-episode bow on the streaming service, and it had solid numbers.
“We can firmly say that Wheel of Time was the most-watched series premiere of the year and one of the Top 5 series launches of all time for Prime Video,” Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said in a statement to Deadline.
While the streamer touts The Wheel of Time as the biggest premiere of the year for the service, Prime Video did not release any viewership statistics.
The closest we got was Jennifer saying that "there were tens and tens of millions of streams" for the fantasy drama within its first three days of launch/

Anderson played Detective Kevin Bernard on 50 episodes of the original series, from 2008-10.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Anderson has signed a deal to appear in one season of the revival, so he might be back to wrap up Kevin's storylines.
No other original stars have officially signed up to appear on the series, which will be paired with spinoffs Svu and Organized Crime.
Anderson is currently starring on ABC's black-ish, which is set to return for its eighth and final season on January 4.
Hugh Dancy has also joined the cast, but no details have been revealed about his character.
Burn Notice alum Jeffrey Donovan also landed a series regular role earlier this month.

When you look at the original Marvel Cinematic Universe roster of the Avengers, five of the six team members have had solo films — or in the case of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, multiple standalone efforts, while Black Widow and the Hulk have had one apiece. The only one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to not get his own big-screen adventure? Hawkeye.
Super-archer Clint Barton — played in five MCU films by Jeremy Renner — was originally slated to get his own spotlight movie. But somehow over the course of several years, the idea morphed into a TV show, focusing on the relationship between Barton and the newly introduced Kate Bishop, a young woman who eventually takes up the Hawkeye mantle.

"It was never just a heist!" Time for something truly epic. You've heard of Marvel marathons, you've heard of supercuts, but what if you took every MCU movie to date and put them together into one extraordinarily epic supercut? Yes. Someone did this. A Reddit user called "pizzabryon" has put together and illegally fan-released this supercut which he has dubbed simply The Infinity Saga. Another fan already tried to edit everything together in what is known as "The Sacred Timeline Cut" (a reference to "Loki" and the timeline with all the MCU events), but this one is slightly different. The Infinity Saga takes "every MCU movie from Iron Man to Endgame" (23 in total) and has re-edited everything into chronological scene order. Meaning, whatever year that scene took place, has been put into order that way, including flashbacks and time travel stuff (he says "anything that didn’t involve or show...

Hawkeye and Avengers: Endgame executive producer Trinh Tran never doubted whether Clint Barton/Hawkeye’s Endgame storyline warranted further exploration. Instead, it was a question of which medium was best suited to tell the street-level story of Jeremy Renner’s Avenger and his quest to get home in time for Christmas. Tran, along with her fellow Marvel Studios producers, quickly realized that the Hawkeye project would benefit creatively if it transitioned from the feature film side of the studio to the newly-established Disney+ side.

The arrival of Disney+ series Hawkeye will have Marvel Cinematic Universe archer Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) dealing with the implications of his post-Snap international vigilante spree as Ronin, which made him enemies among the world’s conventional criminals. Yet, rather than hit up one (or all) of his super-powered Avengers contacts, he instead relies solely on the help of an upstart fangirl and would-be arrow-apprentice in Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). This leads to a rather obvious question, which Marvel’s Kevin Feige now addresses.
Indeed, while we’ve been seeing Disney+ Marvel television shows entangle Avengers members in a variety of personal struggles, Hawkeye appears to have uniquely grounded stakes. This is especially clear when remembering that Barton, who helped save the universe from freaking Thanos and his intergalactic army in Avengers: Endgame, now finds himself in New York City during the Christmas season fending off neighborhood street toughs in matching red tracksuits,...

Few actors have dominated movie screens in quite the same fashion as Scarlett Johansson, who will receive the 35th annual American Cinematheque Award on Nov. 18. The American Cinematheque will be honoring Participant Media with its inaugural Power of Cinema Award.
Able to bounce back and forth between massive worldwide blockbusters and critically acclaimed independent productions, the Oscar-nominated Johansson landed Academy consideration for 2019’s “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit,” and has cemented herself as one of the most iconic women on the screen, making her a natural fit for the honor. Upcoming is the animated “Sing 2” in which she voices Ash, the female crested porcupine, one of the main characters of the toon.
Having done comedy, romance, action-spectacle, and nearly everything else in between, she never pigeonholed herself into one genre, opening herself up to various cinematic possibilities.

Way back in 2008, a little movie named Iron Man introduced us to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Debuting the same year as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, it featured many of the same themes as the Batman sequel: a rich, flawed superhero protagonist who relies on technology rather than superpowers to fight the bad guy; living, breathing, human villains to be taken down, and a neo– real world setting in which the laws of nature seem to be reasonably close to those in our own reality.
But while Nolan’s determination to ground his trilogy in verisimilitude barely wavered through his next and final instalment of the Dark Knight Trilogy, 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man has since been on a journey in which he fights off an alien invasion,...

Remember when Clint Barton slayed a bunch of yakuza goons in "Avengers: Endgame?" After his family got dusted in the Snapture, whereby Thanos willed half of all life out of existence, Jeremy Renner's character adopted a new identity -- that of Ronin instead of Hawkeye. He got tatted up and started speaking Japanese and wielding a samurai sword instead of a bow and arrow. When Clint returned after the time jump in "Endgame," Black Widow watched him slice and dice a yakuza boss played by Hiroyuki Sanada in Tokyo, showing how ruthless a killer he'd become.

That’s interesting to think about, isn’t it? Back in 2008, Robert Downey Jr. came to the big screen with a great deal of swagger and attitude as Tony Stark, who would later on in the movie become the namesake that he would go out with near the last part of Endgame, closing out the Infinity Saga. What might have happened had he been given another role though? It’s tough to see him as anyone else at the moment, but if there were another arrogant role that he might have been able to play, it might have been that of Doctor

“Avengers: Endgame” was widely celebrated by moviegoers across the world, but one moment during the movie’s climax got routinely called out for pandering to fans. That moment is when the majority of the franchise’s female superheroes band together for a “girl power” moment during the final battle against Thanos. It turns out Marvel executives had concerns with the scene being too pandering following “Endgame” test screenings. Such news is revealed by executive producer Trinh Tran in the new MCU behind-the-scenes book, “The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
As Tran remembers, it was a viral Twitter photo of Marvel stars such as Zoe Saldana, Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Tessa Thompson and more that “spurred collective talk” at Marvel of bringing the MCU’s female superheroes together. It was around this time that many of these actresses discussed the possibility of an all-female...

Director Douglas Mackinnon, whose credits include “Doctor Who,” “Sherlock” and Neil Gaiman’s “Good Omens,” still recalls the moment he realized that London was no longer the center of the universe in terms of U.K. film and high-end TV production.
He was in his native Scotland, where he was directing a few episodes of “Outlander,” when one of the show’s executives asked what he was planning to do next. “I said, ‘I’ll probably head off to London like usual and look for work.’ And she said, ‘Oh, I’ve never been to London.”

In 2008, Marvel Studios started building something special. With the Robert Downey Jr.-led Iron Man they had a hit on their hands, and they set about constructing a cinematic universe using the film as a strong foundation.
Three years later, they would introduce Thor and Captain America by giving the characters their own solo movies, and in The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 Bruce Banner and Black Widow had joined the party. Hawkeye and Nick Fury were also being mixed into the Marvel batter, and soon the whole thing was ready to bake in 2012’s The Avengers.
For the first time, audiences got to see the Avengers teaming up on the big screen to stop their first apocalypse, and fans couldn’t get enough. Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War would follow – the latter filmed back to back with the concluding part of the Infinity Saga, Avengers: Endgame.

Any red carpet premiere for a Marvel Studios movie is an over-the-top event, and the gala opening for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” on Monday night was no exception. Disney shut down Hollywood Blvd. in front of the El Capitan Theater, where throngs of costumed (and masked) fans crowded the sidewalks on either side, as stars Simu Liu and Awkwafina patiently walked down the (socially distanced) press line, talking up everything from how the film marks a milestone for Asian representation to its many elaborate and kinetic action scenes.
There was an unmistakable buzz of excitement in the air, but it was also tinged with something the MCU hasn’t had to confront in a decade: anxiety. When “Shang-Chi” opens on Sept. 3, it will be Marvel Studios’ first exclusive theatrical release in over two years, and for the first time since the earliest days of the studio...

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed Chinese fans’ most pressing concerns about the upcoming “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” in a recent interview.
Feige held an exclusive 14-minute-long interview in English with the well-regarded veteran Chinese film critic Raymond Zhou on the day of the film’s U.S. red carpet premiere (it’s out widely on Sept. 3), which shone a spotlight on China’s biggest gripes so far about the film.
“Shang-Chi” doesn’t yet have a China release date, and it’s unclear whether it has formally passed censorship. Past franchise successes prove that crossing that hurdle into the world’s largest film market will of course be key to the title’s global gross.
One of the last major overseas trips Feige took before Covid-19 shutdowns was to Shanghai in 2019 for an “Avengers: Endgame” promotional event, he told Zhou, calling it “one of...

The second episode of Marvel’s latest Disney+ series, ‘What If…T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?’, explores the possibility of T’Challa becoming the iconic galactic outlaw in a twist that also involves him being portrayed as very different from the Peter Quill version of the character. It’s safe to say Star-Lord never needed to perform a dance-off to save the universe in this timeline!
As you may know if you visited the site last week, our What If…? reviews are adopting a different format. More of a “breakdown” that we hope will still satisfy regular readers but also help younger viewers and those less familiar with the MCU keep up.

All television shows are collaborative creations, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows add a few layers beyond what’s normal. For Loki head writer Michael Waldron, that meant not only coming into the job with the series already having a premise — a variant of Loki, who was plucked from the timestream after the events of The Avengers, runs afoul of the Time Variance Authority, an obscure group even by Marvel standards — but having to set up the idea of a multiverse of parallel realities, which will be at the center...

Black Widow was a pleasant surprise. Never the top of my Marvel to-do list, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. The smart money had Johansson’s long-tenured Avenger coming back from death despite sacrificing her soul in Endgame’s final act. However, the inexplicable interquel between Civil War and Infinity War allows her legacy to live on while letting the dead remain dead. Black Widow’s death never seemed as much of a done deal as Tony Stark’s. Her sacrifice saved humanity from repeated destruction, and as far as we know, her specific sacrifice came with somewhat absolute rules. Still, knowing

In the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War and the lead up to Avengers: Endgame, one question echoed out across the Marvel Cinematic Universe: who got Snapped, and who stayed?
While the final moments of Infinity War gave us insight into the fates of many an MCU character, not everyone could be included in the movie’s effectively abrupt denouement—and that’s without even considering the MCU characters we had yet to meet. Offbeat auteur David Lynch has nine previous Emmy nominations for his work on the groundbreaking mystery series “Twin Peaks,” but he hasn’t yet won a trophy from the television academy. That could change this year thanks to “Robot Chicken,” of all things. For a filmmaker as idiosyncratic as he is, though, maybe the outlandish stop-motion animated comedy is the most perfectly bizarre way for the honorary Oscar champ to finally claim his first Emmy.
Lynch is on the Emmy ballot for Best Character Voice-Over Performance for playing the Mad Scientist in the show’s 200th episode, “Endgame,” but he wouldn’t be the show’s first nominee for voice acting. Co-creator Seth Green earned nominations in 2010, 2011, and 2015, while Sam Elliott picked up a bid in 2013. Overall, the show has won six Emmys, including Best Short Form Animated Program in 2010, 2016, and 2018, so we know academy members have been watching the show.

Okay, now we’re talking “Summer at the movies”! Yeah, yeah we’ve had the newest entry in a “tentpole franchise” with the mind- (and butt) numbing F9, but this Friday’s big release continues a now 13-year tradition. We’re going back to the multiplex (or a deluxe “single-screen palace” for those lucky few) for a deep dive into the Marvel Cinematic Universe! “Excelsior’, as our much-missed “king of cameos” would say. Oh, and this dive is so “deep’ you may get a bit of whiplash in your reclining theatre seat since it’s a prequel to the film in which we said goodbye to this character, from 2019. But really, after her introduction in 2010s Iron Man II, and roles in six other MCU epics, she, yes S-h-e, is long, long overdue for a solo showcase. And after countless release date changes, it’s finally time for film fans...

When it comes to moviegoers, there are few that assemble as forcefully as the ones who pledge allegiance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Yet for the past two years, superhero enthusiasts have been deprived of Spandex-filled theatrical offerings as the pandemic forced Disney (and Sony) to postpone “Black Widow,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Eternals” over and over again. Sure, there has been a steady supply of Marvel-set TV spinoffs like “WandaVision,” “Loki” and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney Plus to fill the comic book-sized void, but movie theater marquees have been without an all-important Marvel superhero tentpole since “Spider-Man: Far From Home” in July of 2019.
Enter Natasha Romanoff. After a year-plus delay, “Black Widow,” the standalone adventure starring Scarlett Johansson, is finally hitting theaters on Friday and is expected to have the best opening weekend of any pandemic-era release.
