After proving his worth in Taylor Sheridan’s neo-western drama Yellowstone, Kevin Costner has continued his tryst with the genre with his latest film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 which he has written, produced, directed, and starred in. Set during the American Civil War period, the movie is the first installment in a 4 part film series that premiered in the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Kevin Costner saddled up to the Campari Lounge at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday for a 75-minute conversation about his life and career that was funny, revealing and even tear-jerking.
It was all part of The Hollywood Reporter executive editor (awards) Scott Feinberg’s annual taping at Cannes of his Awards Chatter podcast, and took place just hours before Costner unveiled his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, at the festival.
During the lively conversation, Costner seemed energized by the crowd, at times standing up and wandering toward them, or facing the picturesque view of the Croisette and pretending to have a conversation with himself (or a wise adviser) wherein he’d interrogate his decisions, like spending his own money on his movies.
Costner invested $20 million of his own money into Horizon, deferred his fees and took out a loan on his Santa Barbara home to make it happen,...

There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive it has been Kevin Costner. Okay, well Clint Eastwood too. And that has been true right from the beginning of his career when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985, and he also made an impression as title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Oscar-winning 1990 Best Picture Dances With Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. For the past few seasons he has prominently been involved in a more contemporary take in his hit TV series, Yellowstone. But without question his most ambitious and sprawling swing yet, Horizon: An American Saga, which kicked off...

While most would say The Untouchables is the movie that made Kevin Costner a star, in many ways, Orion’s No Way Out solidified his stardom. The film was shot before The Untouchables, with him scoring the leading role after being cast by Lawrence Kasdan in the Western classic Silverado (as a way to make up for cutting all his scenes from The Big Chill). No Way Out was the first time he headlined a big film on his own, and it was the perfect showcase. If gave him a chance to do action, drama and romance, with his backseat love scene with Sean Young noted as one of the steamiest in Hollywood history up to that point.
It was part of an essential three-movie deal that Costner signed with the now-defunct Orion Pictures, which included Bull Durham and Dances With Wolves, both of which helped cement him as one...

In recent years, Kevin Costner has been seen less on the big screens and more on his television series “Yellowstone,” currently bringing astounding ratings to the Paramount Network. Westerns have been good to Costner at the movies, with his most successful winning him two Oscars as producer and director of “Dances with Wolves” in 1990.
Costner almost had a career that ended before it really started. After very small roles in a number of big films such as Ron Howard’s “Night Shift” and the Jessica Lange vehicle “Frances” Costner then got what could have been a star-making role. However, his role as a suicide victim in flashback scenes for “The Big Chill” was cut by director Lawrence Kasdan. The same director wou would later make it up to Costner by casting him in a showy role in the film “Silverado.”

Angela Bassett will receive an Oscar this year, after all.
The “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star is among four people the academy’s board of governors will present honorary Oscars to at the Governors Awards later this year, the academy announced on Monday. Legendary writer, director, and actor Mel Brooks and acclaimed editor Carol Littleton will join Bassett as honorary Oscar winners. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will go to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter.
Bassett was a popular pick to win her first competitive Oscar this year for the Marvel sequel, but the actress lost Best Supporting Actress to “Everything Everywhere All At Once” co-star Jamie Lee Curtis. The origins of Lawrence Kasdan's "Wyatt Earp" rest within the troubled production of Kurt Russell's "Tombstone". In the early 1990s, Kevin Costner, who was busily branding himself as an all-American hybrid of Gary Cooper and James Stewart, hooked up with "Glory" screenwriter Kevin Jarre to make "Tombstone," an epic film about the legendary, real-life lawman. This would've afforded the ambitious Costner a connection to another red-white-and-blue big-screen icon, Henry Fonda, who'd turned in what was then considered the definitive performance of Earp in John Ford's 1946 classic, "My Darling Clementine."
But Costner, who'd just won Oscars for Best Picture and Director with "Dances with Wolves," disapproved of Jarre's ensemble vision. He wanted his warts-and-all take on Earp to be the film's sole focus. When Jarre resisted, Costner bolted the project and pursued his own telling of Earp's tale.

Ahead of the Feb. 18 event, Denering looked back at some of his prized work, including a piece seen in Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur classic.

The final mural appeared in the compound of park owner John Hammond (played by Richard Attenborough) in various shots of the action flick.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger with the Bad Batch and Omega still left on the deserted desert planet, hoping Cid will come rescue them before their rations run out.
With classic Western story riffs and a score and location to match, this episode puts the heroes...

One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time is returning to TV more than four decades later. “Fawlty Towers,” the beloved British sitcom starring John Cleese, is getting a revival, with the “Monty Python” star set to return.
The show is being developed at Castle Rock Entertainment, with Matthew George, Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Derrick Rossi executive producing for the studio. Cleese will write and star in the revival with his daughter, Camilla Cleese.
“What I like about Matt is that, unlike many producers, he really ‘gets’ the creative process,” Cleese said in a statement announcing the project. “When we first met, he offered an excellent first idea, and then Matt, my daughter Camilla, and I had one of the best creative sessions I can remember. By dessert we had an overall concept so good that, a few days later, it won the approval of Rob and Michele Reiner.

You might not know this if you're under 25, but Kevin Costner was a huge movie star before he was the world's biggest TV star. Yep, before playing the borderline psychopathic patriarch John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan's insanely popular "Yellowstone," Costner starred in many of the 1980s and '90s' biggest movies.
Costner first showed up on the silver screen in bit parts in the early 1980s. He started stealing scenes in supporting parts, quickly establishing himself as one of his era's most bankable "everyman" leading men, alongside Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Tom Hanks. Costner's legendary run as an A-list movie star included Academy Award winners, bonafide blockbusters, cinematic classics, and, yes, some of the biggest bombs of all time. I'm not going to talk (much) about those. Instead, I'm going to count down Costner's 14 best movies ever. If you're planning your own personal Costner movie marathon, check out this list.

Multiple movies coming out in quick succession, dealing with similar subject matter, is nothing new in Hollywood. It's a phenomenon called Twin Films, and we're not referring to the shared filmography of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.
In 1964, both "Dr. Strangelove" and "Fail Safe" were released, dealing with the threat of nuclear war -- though, obviously, one is a satire and the other is a straight drama. More than 30 years later, late '90s movies like "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak," "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact," and "Antz" and "A Bug's Life" carried on this tradition. But in the early '90s, there was a sudden rush to produce movies about legendary American lawman Wyatt Earp with the 1993 film "Tombstone" and, well, "Wyatt Earp," which came out the following year.
These days, the one most people tend to remember is "Tombstone," thanks largely to a scenery-chewing performance from Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday.

Before "The Untouchables" made Kevin Costner a bankable star, the only points of reference directors and casting agents had to gauge his acting potential were two early films, the coming-of-age road trip movie "Fandango" and Lawrence Kasdan's bombastic Western "Silverado." Brian De Palma saw something in Costner's cocksure portrayal of Jake in "Silverado" and thought he might be able to add a spark and an edge to federal agent Elliot Ness.
After landing the role, Costner had the unenviable task of going up against Robert De Niro's blazing-hot energy as Al Capone. In a now-famous Hollywood story, Bob Hoskins was originally set to play Capone until De Niro accepted the part, forcing De Palma to pay 200,000 to Hoskins to not appear in the film. Costner landed 1 million for the role, which was a big gamble for a production that already had a 25 million budget. Costner's star was definitely on the rise,...

The Friday the 13th franchise is very important to me, so it always hits me hard when I hear that someone involved with the series has passed away… and last Friday night, the news broke that we have lost another Friday the 13th alumnus. Someone who played the hockey masked icon Jason Voorhees himself: stuntman Ted White. White had already been working in the entertainment industry as an actor and stuntman for thirty-five years by the time he was offered the chance to play Jason in 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (watch it Here). It’s not a job he was thrilled to do, he didn’t even want to be credited on the movie, but he accepted it because the pay was good. As years went by, White eventually realized that he had been involved in something special and started connecting with fans at conventions.

Stuntman and actor Ted White, who played Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter" among other roles, has died at the age of 96. Convention owner Sean Clark confirmed the news on Facebook (via Bloody Disgusting), writing that White "passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home."
White's personal website notes that he was born on January 25, 1926, "in a small town in Texas." At the age of 17, he went into the U.S. Marine Corps, which saw him stationed in the Pacific on Iwo Jima during World War II. He attended the University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship and was also a Golden Gloves boxer before moving to California, where he assembled an impressive list of stunt credits, including "Creature from the Black Lagoon," "Giant," "Rio Bravo," "Planet of the Apes," the 1976 "King Kong," "Escape from New York," "Road House," and the 2000 "Gone in 60 Seconds" remake.

The character of Otto West in "A Fish Called Wanda" is a marvelous comedic creation. He is, in no particular order, a demolitions expert, a narcissist, a pervert, a psychopath and a moron. Otto does not, of course, believe he is a moron, and his deep conceitedness shields him from this truth -- even though he has been called "stupid" enough times to specifically insist that people must not fling this epithet at his person.
There is a broad theatricality to Otto's idiocy, but he must be desirable enough to convince us that a wily con artist like Wanda Gershwitz (Jamie Lee Curtis) would go to bed with him repeatedly. There were dozens of character actors thriving in 1988 who could've met both prerequisites, but the role screamed for a movie star willing to make a spectacular ass out of himself. Before 1987, Kevin Costner might've been best known in Hollywood for the movie in which he didn't appear.
Lawrence Kasdan's "The Big Chill" gave just about everyone involved a massive career boost, and probably would've done likewise for Costner had he not been cut out of the film. He played Alex Marshall, the character whose death by suicide brings a group of college friends back together for a fall weekend in South Carolina. Though Kasdan shot flashbacks featuring Costner, he ultimately cut them out of the movie, which became a Baby Boomer favorite.
Costner's bid for movie stardom officially began in 1985, with lead roles in Kevin Reynolds' "Fandango" (another Boomer nostalgia piece) and John Badham's "American Flyers." He also landed a flashy supporting role in Lawrence Kasdan's Western throwback, "Silverado." The first two films not only bombed, they barely received a theatrical release, while Kasdan's movie performed well below the studio's commercial expectations.

Casting movie stars can be a tricky proposition, especially if you're making a big-budget film with unproven talent. In 1987, that's exactly what Kevin Costner was. He'd appeared in three box-office bombs in 1985, and, prior to this, had been cut out of Lawrence Kasdan's Baby Boomer smash "The Big Chill." But after missing out on the more established Don Johnson (who was red hot at the time thanks to "Miami Vice"), Costner wound up being Brian De Palma's Eliot Ness in the hit-hungry director's big-screen rendition of "The Untouchables." And while De Palma had a bit of movie star insurance in Sean Connery as the veteran beat cop Malone, David Mamet's masterful screenplay screamed for a larger-than-life Al Capone.
De Palma only had eyes for Robert De Niro, and he had a history with the actor, having worked with him in the counterculture comedies "Greetings" and "Hi, Mom!

There’s someone new on the horizon…and that someone is Thomas Haden Church. Church has signed on to co-star in Kevin Costner’s latest, Horizon.
News on the cast of Costner’s long-awaited western has been coming in quite steadily. Earlier this month, with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Luke Wilson all inked contracts before Thomas Haden Church.
Horizon will be Kevin Costner’s fourth film as director, following 1990’s Dances with Wolves, 1997’s The Postman and 2003’s Open Range. Costner, it seems, is taking that number quite literally. For his latest endeavor, Costner wants to go epic, churning out “four different movies.”
“They’re going to get to see it the way I intended it to be seen. It will eventually be cut up into [hour-long episodes] or 42 minutes…But their first viewing of it will be as four 2 hour and 45-minute movies. And every three months, one will come out.

Veteran cameraman Lou Barlia, whose film credits include “Superman” and “Steel Magnolias,” died in his home in Las Vegas on Saturday, June 25, after a brief battle with mesothelioma cancer. He was 92.
Born and raised in New York, Barlia started his photography career in his early teens after his father brought home a camera he spotted on the train tracks. During and after his high school years, Barlia worked in a photo studio at the School of Industrial Arts in New York. He was later drafted into the army, where he received the Bronze Star and other citations for his service as a combat cameraman during the Korean War.
In the 1950s and ’60s, Barlia worked on several commercials, documentaries and TV shows before starting his career in feature films in the 1970s. He worked behind the camera for dozens of films between the ’70s and late ’90s, including “Serpico,” “Slap Shot,...

Kevin Costner is starring in a TV Western! News broke on May 3, 2017, that the ruggedly handsome actor, no stranger to a Stetson, would play rich cattleman John Dutton in Yellowstone, an upcoming contemporary take on a distinctly American genre. The buzz in the heartland turned into a roar of approval. And no wonder: Costner had serious cred. He’d saddled up plenty onscreen, from his 1985 breakout film, the adventurous Western Silverado, to sensitive 1990 game-changer Dances With Wolves, which won him two Academy Awards. With this new project, what vision of the West would we get? Turns out, one we’d never seen before. Yellowstone occupies a distinct spot carved out by cocreator Taylor Sheridan, who grew up in rural Texas. The actor turned writer-director was already critically lauded for his 2015 crime thriller Sicario and neo-Westerns Hell or High Water and Wind River. Sheridan has proven adept at capturing the friction at the borders between lands,...

The Outlaws is one of the best shows of the year.
With its blend of humor, action, and fine acting, it has everything you'd expect from a TV show with the talent involved.
TV Fanatic chatted with Rhianne Barreto (Rani) and Gamba Cole (Christian) about the show, premiering April 1 on Prime Video.
"It was many things, you know, the possibility of working with Stephen Merchant obviously sits there, you know, number one. He's an icon, not just in the UK but also in the U.S.," Cole shared of what drew him to the show.
Gamba added that the project was personal to him because he was born in Bristol, and he always wanted to go back and act there.
The star said that he connected with the stories and the characters.

The Outlaws premieres Friday, April 1, on Prime Video.
TV Fanatic spoke with creators Stephen Merchant and Elgin James about the highly anticipated series.
Check out the interview below.
How did you both wind up working together on The Outlaws?
Stephen Merchant: Well, I had this very vague idea of people doing community service, based on the fact that my parents used to be involved with that world. When I was growing up, it seemed like an interesting environment for drama or comedy.
You could have a group of strangers, and throw them together. That's always good for drama, conflict, and humor. That's all I had, really. I was introduced to Elgin, and we met up, and hit it off. We felt like there was some sort of meat on the bone and developed it together.
Elgin James: Yeah, I was such a big fan of Stephen, like millions of people.

He co-created two iconic British comedies, The Office and Extras; starred in Hollywood movies including Logan and The Girl in the Spider’s Web; and directed Florence Pugh and The Rock in Fighting with my Family. For his next trick, Stephen Merchant along with Elgin James has created The Outlaws, an ensemble comedy about a group of low-level offenders brought together via community service.
Merchant himself stars in the show alongside Rhianne Barreto, Darren Boyd, Gamba Cole, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson and Christopher Walken as the misfit convicts.

Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.
The Josh Brolin-starring Outer Range premieres April 15 and looks like it could be a wild ride. The synopsis is terse and reads “A rancher fighting for his land and family stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness, forcing a confrontation with the Unknown in ways both intimate and cosmic in the untamable American West.” That, combined with an enigmatic first trailer, has our interest piqued.
Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

Looking for a genre-bending new comedy-thriller that’s already set to return with another season? Then check out Prime Video‘s series The Outlaws. The show from co-creators Stephen Merchant (The Office) and Elgin James (Mayans M.C.) takes a handful of very different individuals and forces them to work together over the course of 100 hours of community payback (a.k.a. community service). Originally debuting on BBC One in the U.K. last year, viewers may have heard about it as the show where Christopher Walken paints over a Banksy, but it’s so much more than that. (Credit: Prime Video) Set in the picturesque English city of Bristol, what starts as a gathering of vastly different criminals turns into a heart-stopping mission to protect one another and possibly get paid along the way. “It began life as a film script actually, but we discovered that there were too many characters really,...

[Warning: The below contains mild spoilers for The Outlaws‘ first season.] Seven troubled souls of varying ages, races, and backgrounds pay for their misdeeds with community service sentences in The Outlaws, a new series that’s part dark comedy and part heist thriller. “I very much like shows that juggle different tones,” explains cocreator and star Stephen Merchant. “Sort of like The Sopranos, which I think is very funny as well as being dramatic.” Among the motley crew: geeky lawyer Greg (Merchant) and veteran thief Frank (Christopher Walken). The connections they forge while cleaning up a run-down building in Bristol, England, could change their lives for the better — or push them further off course. (Credit: Prime Video) Merchant thought Walken would bring a nice blend of charm and menace to the show’s American character and secured the Oscar winner during a visit to his home. “He had lots of smart questions and he made me an omelet,” Merchant recalls. “...

Hulu has released an official trailer for “The Girl From Plainville” — a limited series inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter’s “texting suicide” case.
Based on Jesse Barron’s Esquire article of the same name, “The Girl From Plainville” dives into Carter’s (Elle Fanning) relationship with Conrad Roy III (Colton Ryan) and his following death, which led to her conviction of involuntary manslaughter.
