Any film centered on demonology has an inherent responsibility for success: to make you, the jaded viewer, believe… or at least, to convince you to suspend your disbelief for just a few hours. Whether or not the film’s protagonist(s) are able to do so or not is dependent. In many, like director Scott Derrickson‘s own The Exorcism of Emily Rose, our main character is convinced of the Satanism at hand, desperately trying to get others to listen, while in others, like The Last Exorcism, our lead is one of the last to be convinced of the Devil’s works. Derrickson’s latest, Deliver Us From Evil, is one of the latter tales, in which our hero is slowly pushed to believe, bringing the audience along with him. Ralph Sarchie (played here by Eric Bana) in real-life is a retired NYPD detective, and it’s his memoir upon which this film is based. Bana...

The creator of Family Ties, Gary David Goldberg, has died following a long battle with brain cancer. He passed away this morning at his home in Montecito, just two days short of his 69th birthday.
Goldberg began working in television in the early 1970s and in 1976, at the age of 32, became a writer on The Bob Newhart Show. He went on to write for many other legendary shows like Lou Grant, Alice, Phyllis, The Tony Randall Show, and M*A*S*H.
In addition to Family Ties, Goldberg created shows like Brooklyn Bridge and The Bronx Zoo, and co-created Spin City.
Family Ties ended after seven seasons and 176 episodes. The show had lost a lot of steam but 36.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the finale.

Janet Carroll, a veteran film, TV and stage actress who played Tom Cruise’s mother on vacation in 1983’s Risky Business, died Tuesday in New York after a long illness. She was 71. During a career that spanned three decades, the Chicago native also had recurring roles in two long-running sitcoms: as the owner of the store in which shoe salesman Al Bundy (Ed O’Neill) works in Fox’s Married … With Children and as the wife of stuffy anchorman Jim Dial (Charles Kimbrough) on CBS’ Murphy Brown. Carroll also worked regularly on TV’s The Bronx Zoo opposite Ed Asner and

Perhaps once regarded as a quirky, whimsical visualist known for his eye-popping music videos (Bjork, Beck, White Stripes) and his often pop-surrealist indie films ("Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind," "The Science of Sleep"), French filmmaker Michel Gondry has really challenged the boilerplate concept of who he is as an artist in recent years. He's taken on a tentpole super-hero film ("The Green Hornet" starring Seth Rogen), made a stylistically unadorned and deeply personal, yet unsentimental documentary about his aunt ("The Thorn In The Side") and another superficially quirky mainstream comedy that's actually quite a sincere tribute to the joys of community ("Be Kind Rewind").
Community, fraternity and a sense of belonging are themes that go as far back as 2005's "Dave Chappelle's Block Party" (in of itself a communal event) and these social motifs are definitely present in his latest effort, "The We & The I," which recently premiered in...
