In just a brisk 70 minutes, the film explores loneliness, life in post-pandemic Japan, and the importance of human connection. Minor spoilers follow

The CBS comedy “Ghosts” has won over fans with its slick humor and the chemistry of its ensemble cast. Each character is so deeply established and entertaining that it would be easy to see why any given performer could be singled out as an audience favorite. One of the show’s shining stars is Danielle Pinnock, who plays Alberta Haynes, a jazz singer who was murdered and still doesn’t know by whom. The character’s self-proclaimed grandeur is hilarious, while Pinnock’s singing ability and the corresponding ego she gives Alberta is a joy to watch. She may be sitting in 28th place in our current Emmy odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, but Pinnock is absolutely in this race.

Would “The Sopranos” finale have been as impactful if it hadn’t included Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”? And what would “Grey’s Anatomy” be without its frequent use of the Snow Patrol song “Chasing Cars”? These and many more unforgettable musical TV moments all occurred before the establishment of the Best Music Supervision Emmy category. Since 2017, the award has served the purpose of honoring the people who enhance TV shows by incorporating existing songs into episodes and thus stirring up viewers’ emotions.

“I thought that must be from an earlier season,” remembers Robin Urdang about seeing her name as a 2022 Emmy Award nominee. The music supervisor on the Amazon Prime comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was looking to see if her colleagues Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore earned a nomination for their original music and lyrics when she came across her own citation, which came as a surprise to her, and she feels “thrilled and grateful” for the recognition. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As music supervisor, Urdang collaborates closely with series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino on the song choices for each episode, as well as the show’s songwriters, music editor, music producers and others. The fourth season went into production during the pandemic, which impacted some of her process. All marriages have secrets.
The Cleaning Lady Season 1 Episode 7 explored an in-depth look at Marco and Thony's marriage. It also showed even more details of Arman and Nadia's relationship.
By now, neither of these two couples seemed to stay together for love. In Nadia's case, they appeared to honor their vows because of duty or a desire for joint power.
While the rest of the family seemed delighted to have Marco home, Thony seemed uncomfortable.
She almost treated Marco as an old friend more than her husband, avoiding intimate contact. Her priority was Luca, so the family celebrated a year of holidays that Marco missed.
Hower, Thony made it all about Luca. She avoided kissing and becoming intimate with Marco, stating that they still had many issues to work out.
Marco: What is it? Before you left, things were getting better. We were working things out.
Thony: We were still sleeping in separate beds.

TV provided a lot of memorable musical moments this year.
Some were amazing, and some were very disturbing.
Plus a few classics were dusted off and found new life during these dark times.
1. "Wonderwall"/"Bad Romance"/"Let It Go" - Ted Lasso
Just when you thought Afc Richmond football couldn't score any higher in the adorable and endearing categories, they went to a karaoke bar on Ted Lasso Season 1 Episode 7.
Sam's rendition of "Wonderwall" was heartfelt. Coach Beard's performance of "Bad Romance" would make Lady Gaga proud. Then Rebecca brought down the house with "Let It Go."
The only thing more entertaining than the singers were the reactions of the usually gruff Roy Kent and a shirtless Dani Rojas.
2. "I Want to be Evil"/"Someone to Watch Over Me - Lucifer
Compared to Lucifer Season 4, the first half of Lucifer Season 5 didn't feature the cast showing off their vocals as often.

Whether it’s the Devil sitting down at the piano in his penthouse or Lilith belting out a tune in a 1940’s club, music has always played an integral role in the Lucifer gestalt. With a full blown musical episode planned for the second half of season five, and the noir homage “It Never Ends Well for the Chicken” already in the books, it’s time to reflect on some of the fantastic musical choices showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich have made.

In “Feast of the Epiphany,” a narrative-documentary hybrid, the line between fiction and reality is demarcated quite clearly, even as those two modes remain in constant dialogue — and the conceit is entrancing precisely because of its elusiveness. Beginning as the overtly make-believe story of a dinner party before segueing into surprising verité terrain, this unique feature from directors Michael Koresky, Jeff Reichert and Farihah Zaman is too unconventional to court more than an art-house audience. Still, those interested in experimental works that incite contemplation and debate will find much to chew on throughout the course of this concise, canny effort, which recently premiered at BAMcinemaFest.

The history of film critics contributing to or creating actual films is long and storied. From the groundbreaking works of Cahiers du cinéma writers that made up the French New Wave to Susan Sontag’s little-seen Duet for Cannibals to James Agee’s screenplay for The Night of the Hunter to Eugene Archer’s acting appearance in La Collectionneuse, they have frequently played a direct role in the process of crafting a feature-length film. While this is no guarantee of quality, it allows viewers to dissect not just a filmmaker’s predilections but also their particular, characteristic translation of pre-established ideas on movies to the narrative and visual form.
Entering into this tradition with Feast of the Epiphany are Michael Koresky, Jeff Reichert, and Farihah Zaman; the former two are the co-founders and editors of the film website Reverse Shot (one of the web’s finest resources for modern movie...

Andrew takes a nerdy dive into the pop culture real and fictional that's made its way into the world of Red Dwarf...
Creating culture within science-fiction can be tricky. It’s potentially alienating, with the audience required to understand allusions without a reference point. Then again, if you throw in too many contemporary references, the future starts to look dated pretty quickly. Red Dwarf has walked that fine line, building its own stars and entertainment but chucking in the familiar, just to keep the world grounded. We take a look at humanity’s future culture as seen through the eyes of Lister, Rimmer, Cat, Kryten and Holly.

There’s a nagging question at the heart of Denis Villenueve’s Blade Runner 2049, and it’s to do with need. Why does Ryan Gosling’s Detective K need a robot wife (Ana de Armas), programmed to speak in a diaphanous lisp? Why does he need an apartment? What purpose is there for a robot to blend in? Everyone in his world can almost smell his oiled gears, his falseness. So why does he need the trappings of reality? Like Twin Peaks: The Return, Blade Runner 2049 has to interrogate its own incongruous existence so many years after the artifact that gave it life first entered the cultural bloodstream. Why does this film exist, beyond the potential box office? Why have writer Hampton Fancher and producer Ridley Scott gone back here? Who needs this? The film seems aware of itself as an automaton theatrical event. It watches itself; taking place behind glass,...

We are knee-deep into a summer of dreary sequels, kids’ fare, and a few whip-smart outliers. If you’ve already seen the likes of The Beguiled and Baby Driver, perhaps staying home with a book is a better idea than trekking to the cinema. Let’s dive into some worthy film-centric reads.
Wonder Woman: The Art and Making of the Film by Sharon Gosling (Titan Books)
Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman is one of the biggest superhero success stories, and it deserves that designation. The classification makes reading a book like Wonder Woman: The Art and Making of the Film feel like a celebratory affair. After a brief account of the character’s comics history, we delve into designs for Themyscira, concept art of Dr. Maru’s laboratory, and somber depictions of battle. What stands out, however, are drawings and photographs showing the film’s winning costume designs. It is illuminating,...

Late last week, I got a chance to see Ridley Scott’s latest film, the franchise outing Alien: Covenant. A sequel to Prometheus and prequel to Alien, it is still a few weeks out, but 20th Century Fox is clearly feeling bullish about it. You’ll see what think in detail later on this month, but with it fresh in my mind, I wanted to take a look at Scott’s career on the whole. A few years ago I ranked his ten best movies, and I’m going to be doing that again today, just wish an added twist. Scott is fairly prodigious with his outings, so this can be a fairly consistent thing. There’s always some new coals in the fire for him. Before I get to the top ten list, I figured I’d do a full ranking of total filmography, up until those best ones,...

Exploring the director’s fascination with spying.
The cinema of Steven Spielberg is one that’s built around fascination and a need to understand. As a director he is an explorer, but not one interested in unearthing grand artifacts, rather one in search of intimate treasures, an explorer of explorers, so to speak, someone to whom the process of discovery is much more interesting than the discoveries themselves.
As such, his films are rife with surveillance, characters spying on or otherwise surreptitiously watching other characters, tracking their behavior, their actions, their being, for the purposes of gathering information, good and bad. Think of the Nazis on the trail of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark peering over newspapers, or the future crime detectives in Minority Report scanning time for illegalities, or the government scientists after E.T. creeping about suburbia.

When Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at age 27, popular music lost one of its most talented young voices. She had stunned the world in 2006 with her breakthrough album, Back To Black, which showcased her larger-than-life vocal range and songwriting skills that belayed her tender years. By the end of her life Winehouse had become infamous for her personal problems and drug-fueled exploits, but her music will endure long after the tabloid headlines are forgotten. While most of her songs are autobiographical, featuring lyrics brimming with equal parts wit and vulnerability, she wasn't afraid to add her own unique twist to familiar tunes.

If you’ve watched TV in the past 10 years, chances are you know Bear McCreary’s music. He’s become one of the most (if not the most) sought-after and prolific composers in television, ever since he came into his own writing the boundary-pushing score for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. He counts The Walking Dead, Outlander, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. among his credits. And this March theater-goers got to experience his music with a big screen presentation; he composed the chilling and thrilling score for J.J. Abrams’ 10 Cloverfield Lane. Today McCreary is juggling so many projects that he can’t count all his current TV shows and movies and video games — “I can’t even tell. I honestly don’t even know,” how many projects he’s in the midst of, he said during an interview at Cafe Laurent in Culver City, CA. The...

A former soldier turned security guard struggles with his Ptsd when called upon to protect a shady businessman’s wife and child
Writer-director Alice Winocour has described this tense tale of a soldier back from Afghanistan serving as security detail in the home of a wealthy Lebanese businessman as a chance to make “a genre movie” in an “area usually strictly reserved for men”. Matthias Schoenaerts is the Ptsd-afflicted Vincent through whose paranoid eyes and hair-trigger responses we experience the unfolding narrative. Diane Kruger is the businessman’s trophy wife, left at home by her shifty husband in whose absence Vincent becomes her paid-for protector. With early hints of both Sliver and Someone to Watch Over Me, Disorder (originally entitled Maryland) develops into something more intriguing thanks in large measure to a brilliant expressionist soundtrack by Mike Lévy (aka Gesaffelstein), which does most of the heavy lifting when it comes...

Happy Birthday, Ira Gershwin A lyricist, Gershwin collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century. With George he wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows, featuring songs such as 'I Got Rhythm', 'Embraceable You', 'The Man I Love' and 'Someone to Watch Over Me'. He was also responsible, along with DuBose Heyward, for the libretto to George's opera Porgy and Bess. The success the brothers had with their collaborative works has often overshadowed the creative role that Ira played. However, his mastery of songwriting continued after the early death of George. He wrote additional hit songs with composers Jerome Kern 'Long Ago and Far Away', Kurt Weill and Harold Arlen.

We talk to Ridley Scott about his new film The Martian, his career in film, including Alien and Blade Runner, and his plans for Prometheus.
When we met Ridley Scott in a plush London hotel one September afternoon, the director was relaxed and jovial. And well he should be; his latest film, The Martian, has already garnering glowing notices, and for our money, it's Scott's best film in years. The story of astronaut Mark Watney and his struggles to survive alone and hungry on the hostile surface of Mars, it's full of humour, drama and eye-popping visuals.
As the film opens in the UK, we were lucky enough to talk to Scott about all kinds of movies from his voluminous body of work, including Alien, Blade Runner, Legend, The Counsellor and lots more, all leading up to his plans for the three Prometheus movies he wants to make, and finally,...

Alien 3 was released on this date in 1992. We look back at the different versions of the movie we almost saw.
This article originally appeared on Den of Geek UK.
When the credits rolled on 1986's Aliens, the inevitable question from many moviegoers was, "What happens next?"
For 20th Century Fox, and writer-producers David Giler and Walter Hill, it took nearly six years to figure out an answer to that question. Certainly when Aliens was in production, director James Cameron had some ideas about a sequel; he once spoke about the prospect of Ripley, Hicks, and young Newt - a makeshift family thrown together by that film's events - meeting up again for a second sequel to Alien.
“I know that James Cameron had planned to have Hicks, Ripley and me in Alien 3, to have a family-type thing," Newt actress Carrie Henn said in 1995.

The constantly busy Ridley Scott always has lots of potential films in production, so here's a look at what he might be up to next...
Since his debut in 1977 with the historical drama, The Duellists, director Ridley Scott has gradually built up an eclectic body of work. His Hollywood career began with the stunning one-two sci-fi punch of Alien and Blade Runner, before heading off into fantasy (Legend), thrillers (Someone To Watch Over Me, Black Rain) and road-trip drama (the Oscar-winning Thelma And Louise).
As James Clayton pointed out in his recent Friday column, the 70-something Sir Ridley shows no sign of slowing down, and if anything, his slate of forthcoming films is somewhat bewildering - in what seems like every other interview, the director will mention another project of one sort or another, which makes working out what he's likely to be...

Although Ridley Scott’s career may not have as many hits as Speilberg’s or Scorsese’s despite being active for just as long, his work has influenced the art of filmmaking just as much. While Speilberg may have blazed trails with his storytelling and Scorsese with his characters, Ridley Scott made waves due to the sensory impact of his movies on their audiences. Like George Lucas, Scott understood the importance of visual and audio stimulation and how these attributes could be used as impactful film making tools.
