Like so many before and after him, Frank Laloggia had a hard time when he first started out in the film business. Yet after booking several roles as an actor, the Rochester native seemed to finally catch his big break. He had been given the chance to write and direct a feature film. Unfortunately, Laloggia’s disillusionment with the industry set in while working on 1981’s Fear No Evil. Severe studio interference was the main cause of his disappointment, and as a result, Laloggia took an extended break from filmmaking. However, the time off between his debut and Lady in White proved to be beneficial; Laloggia returned from his long leave with what many regard as the best film of his career.
With a story partly based on a well-known urban legend from the director’s neck of the woods, it was understandable when people assumed Laloggia’s sophomore film...

Happy Halloween month! It’s time to theme the horror watchlists accordingly. We’re jumping back to the ‘80s for some quintessential Halloween horror for the first week of October.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to 1980s horror movies set on or around Halloween, excluding the Halloween franchise.
Here’s where you can stream these five 1980s Halloween titles this week, from kitchen sink cult gems to made-for-tv chillers!
Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder, Tubi
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house. It happens to be the body of a serial killer, and reading an incantation from a book revives it.

James Cameron’s Spider-Man. Kind of has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Well, unlike the fictional James Cameron’s Aquaman–of which only a few fleeting seconds exist in the universe of the long-defunct HBO series Entourage–a Spider-Man movie written and directed by the legendary filmmaker almost came to pass in the early 1990s.
But like so many superhero and comics-based projects during that time–a relative Dark Ages for the genre–Cameron’s vision for the webslinging high school student never swung into theaters.
Almost all of it was down to legal issues surrounding the rights to Spider-Man, which kept him off the screen for years. But a glance through the “scriptment” that Cameron worked up–a detailed treatment outlining the story, characters, and even passages of dialogue–indicates that Cameron’s conception of the character and his mythos was very faithful in its own way.

Eleven months in to 2021, and Warner Bros. movie streaming strategy on HBO Max is still going strong. Now the list of new releases for November 2021 on HBO Max is highlighted by yet another big ticket film.
King Richard, starring Will Smith, is set to arrive on HBO Max and in theaters on Nov. 19. The movie will tell the story of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. Smith is already getting some early awards buzz for the role so Oscar-heads may want to check this one out.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

Margaret Booth is nominated for an Emmy … sort of.
When the 2020 nominations were announced on July 28, “American Horror Story: 1984” found itself with four bids, including two for makeup. The Emmy ballot goes into detail about all the hard work that went into the show’s makeup, including for the character of Margaret (Leslie Grossman), who memorably slices off her own ear. Alas, the actress herself was snubbed, but at least the makeup teams were recognized for crafting the grotesque scene.
This ninth season of FX’s horror anthology series aired last September-November and told the story of traumatized campers at the hauntingly tubular Camp Redwood. Besides its pair of makeup bids, “Ahs: 1984” also earned nominations for sound editing and sound mixing. The winners of these four Emmy categories will be announced at the Creative Arts ceremony in September. (See details on “American Horror Story” Season 10.)

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on Browse! When did you first read Mario Carvalhal’s screenplay for Browse, and what made you want to bring it to life on screen?

Coming up next week here in North America, Shout Factory's horror imprint Scream Factory is releasing a Blu-ray edition of the weirdo 1981 film, Fear No Evil. This no-budget shocker was directed by filmmaker and actor Frank Laloggia and even won a Saturn Award in 1982 for best low budget film. Here are a few of the taglines: I found the second one pretty funny: "Meet Andrew. The Road to Hell is paved with his Victims." "Alexandria High... class of '81 - All the students are going to Hell, except Andrew... he sent them there!" The plot is pretty simple, though a bit convoluted at the same time, if that makes sense: Andew Williams is a gangly high school student with...

Mary Shelley's iconic creation turns 200 in 2018, and to celebrate two centuries of Victor Frankenstein and his monster, author Christopher Frayling has written a new book (coming out this Halloween from Reel Art Press) exploring the rich history of Shelley's now legendary novel and the influences it has had on pop culture—on the screen, stage, and page. In today's Horror Highlights, we also have a look at Nerdist's short film The Mystic Museum, and details on the HelLA Horror Night charity event at the Los Angeles Theatre, Blackshaw's Scare Slam at the London Horror Festival, the Filipino folklore animated series Umbra, and the video game Guts.

As a first time filmmaker, it takes a lot of courage to not follow the trends. The early ‘80s were flooded with slashers, and for good reason; they were, for the most part, instant ATMs to the studios. Thank God then (or Satan, your florist, a masseuse, whatever floats your boat) for Frank Laloggia, a New Yorker in his mid-20s who decided to go epic out of the gate with Fear No Evil (1981), a parable on Good Versus Evil, capital letters, with a strong Catholic bent filtered through Carrie’s prom dress.
Filmed in 1979 with initial funding coming from Laloggia and the rest from Avco Embassy (who ended up releasing it), this January release found little love from critics (except for Variety) but did pick up the Saturn Award for Best Low Budget Film – and well earned, indeed. Fear No Evil boasts high production values, (more or less) solid performances,...

As a young boy of about 11 or 12, I fell in love with Frank Laloggia’s 1988 ghost story Lady in White. Maybe that’s because it’s told from the perspective of a boy not too much younger than me at the time, or because that boy shared the same love of horror fiction and monster movies that I had growing up. I think, though, that my response had something to do with the fact that Laloggia had crafted that rare thing: a good story—a good ghost story, better yet—and had done so with grace, class, and a lot of heart. Even as a kid, that much was evident.

Directed by Brantley Gutierrez, this alternate version of Will Butler's "Anna" vid stars Emma Stone in a marathon-dance frenzy aboard the purportedly haunted Rms Queen Mary. Ryan Heffington (of Sia fame) conjured up the masterful choreography for this nautical nightmare, which, according to Billboard, is a reinterpretation of the retired ocean liner's "Lady in White" ghost story. Every year as Halloween gets closer, basic cable and the DVD racks at big box stores are flooded with Halloween programming for kids—Disneyfied TV movies and animated specials featuring all their favorite characters in costume. But are these cash-ins any good? If you’re trying to foster a love of horror in your little ones—or just looking for something age-appropriate to show them during October—navigating the seas of “kid-friendly” content can be irritating at best, downright impossible at worst.
Because I both love horror movies and have small children, I have my own picks for what I’ll be showing my kids until they’re of an age for… oh, I don’t know… Cannibal Holocaust. All these choices are subjective and entirely dependent on what different kids can handle.

It’s definitely been a week for good-byes.
My daughters and I spent the weekend in the beautiful, still somewhat quaint small town of Auburn, California, helping to lay to rest and celebrate the life of my dear aunt Mary Pascuzzi, my fraternal grandmother’s sister, who was the centered matriarch of her own family and a stabilizing force for all of us in her extended family as well. She, and my grandmother, were big fans of classic-era American movies and enthusiastically encouraged my interest, just one reason why they’re both held dear in my heart and in my memory. And being Italian, they both had more than a casual interest in The Godfather when it came out in 1972. I remember my aunt Mary talking to me about having seen it and wondering, me at the ripe old age of 12, if I’d had a chance to go yet.

Monster films seem to be having a nice little comeback. We seem to be venturing away from the “Grindhouse” homage films, the torture porn films and the other tropes the genre got stuck in. A film that is on my radar is Dark Was The Night, which was adapted from a screenplay that was on The Blacklist a few years back. We just got word that we shouldn’t have to wait too long to see this flick starring Kevin Durand (The Strain) and Lukas Haas (Lady in White, Inception, Brick). Read below for the official word. We’ve also included a trailer that was posted last year for the film.

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

Nakata Hideo of “Ringu” fame returns again to the supernatural with “The Complex”, following up on “The Incite Mill” and English language outing “Chatroom”, both of which were met with a generally lukewarm response. Written by Kato Junya (“Meatball Machine”) and Miyake Ryuta (“The Grudge: Old Lady in White”), the film revolves around creepy goings-on in the public housing complex of the title, attempting to liven up the usual J-Horror clichés with a few odd twists and quirky touches. After premiering at the Rotterdam Film Festival, the film was somewhat of a surprise hit in Japan, topping the box office for an impressive two week period. Former AKB48 member Maeda Atsuko headlines as Asuka, a young nursing student who moves with her family into the sprawling Kuroyuri apartment complex, site of a series of mysterious deaths a decade previously. Right away she notices something not quite right about the place,...

This week's gonzo teen nightmare Spring Breakers is trumpeting the fact that two of its leads - Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez - traditionally play "good girls". But the whole "teen idol gone bad" strategy is a longstanding Hollywood tradition aimed to help transition pigeonholed teen stars into "serious" actors.
Here are a few fellas who tried the tactic, to varying degrees of success.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Speedway Junky
The squeaky-clean kid from Home Improvement took a step toward tarnishing his image by playing an evil, bisexual hooker in this gritty drama, giving a whole new meaning to "Tool Time"!
Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Mysterious Skin
Jgl also went the hustler route for his breakout from small-screen teen stardom - only the 3rd Rock star went "the full gay" in this unsettling and excellent indie drama.

How does one discover a movie like The Wizard of Speed and Time in 2012/2013? Isn’t it antiquated? Isn’t it beyond overdone and dated and doesn’t the premise just fall apart in the face of what we know about Hollywood; the whole movie is one great big farce filled with anti-truths and nonsensical ramblings of a talented special effects man from 1980-whenever? First of all, none of what you have just read is true save that Mike Jittlov is one talented effects man who happens to have a keen eye for film making and a knack for storytelling that touches the heart, inspires and yet delivers a message all at the same time. This is the kind of movie you want you kids to watch if you want them to grow up to be filmmakers like you never became. Follow your dreams. Learn how to accomplish your goals and never give up.

It’s the month of October. It’s Halloween. No, not the day itself, but tis the season. That means we need to focus on some truly excellent 80’s horror surrounding our beloved holiday. Sure we could give the rehash job to Halloween and its subsequent sequels, but that’s not entirely in spirit of the game although I can assure you that I’m working on something that focuses on the Carpenter magnum opus. Today we’re going to focus on some horror flicks that are about Halloween, but aren’t John Carpenter’s Halloween. Let’s talk about The Day After Halloween, Trick or Treats, Lady in White in our first It Came From 1980X triple feature offering. Each of these movies incorporates something of the Halloween spirit and only one of them actually gets any street cred for being an honest to goodness creep out. There’s...

Tobe Hooper’s Invaders from Mars is one of those films that must’ve traumatized a good percentage of the kids who watched it upon release. Even before it hit video, I remember kids a few classes ahead of me talking about how scary it was. Catching it a year later on VHS, I recall sharing that sentiment.
The movie might’ve faded from memory over the years, but certain scenes remained in my head: The crazed look in Louise Fletcher’s eyes as frog legs dangle from her mouth, Timothy Bottoms’ creepy about-face to sinister father, and the Martian leader’s almost gleeful torment of child hero Hunter Carson at the climax. I had a feeling Invaders from Mars might not hold up to the memory of my seven-year-old self, but this damn DVD has been in my collection for years, and part of my reason for resurrecting Saturday...

If you ever wanted to know what Chris Brown dreams about (and I know that’s very unlikely, we’ve all got lives after all) then here’s the place to be.
Sometimes infamy can strike someone unawares and stay with them forever like a bad smell or a dodgy tattoo purchased after one too many vodka shots. Since 2009, Chris Brown has been notoriously linked with violence but he hasn’t always made it easy for himself in the aftermath. Obviously there was the Rihanna assault case and the resulting community service charge (deserved), which was quite a big deal considering how high profile both artists were at the time. There was no way he was going to escape that with a mere super injunction was he now…
Since then despite new albums, a long hiatus away from the public eye and attempts to change his image/sound the violence...

Writer, producer, director Frank Laloggia of Lady in White (one of the most acclaimed and beloved independently produced American films) is back and in a Big way. Laloggia is at Cannes presenting his 10 minute preview of Miro/Miranda! his new musical comedy and perhaps the most grandly produced (and expensive) promo for a film yet to be made.
“We shot in Italy for 13 days back in September, just south of Florence and not far from where I live.”
With a 40 man crew and dancers culled from Rome, Milan and Florence Laloggia says that he has basically “plucked” the biggest musical number from the film and “shot it”.
“It's a whirlwind 10 minutes of samba, comedy and grand emotion all meant to convey the visual and emotional essence of what I intend to bring to the feature, the story of an Italian man who lives with his Italian mama but dreams of becoming a woman inspired by his idol Carmen Miranda...and does!”
Miro/Miranda! screens at the Palais J on Sunday the 20th at 3pm and at the Palais H on Monday the 21st at 11am.

The first time moviegoers saw Lukas Haas was when he was the 9-year-old Amish boy in Witness, and ever since then we’ve watched him grow up.
The haunted little boy in Lady in White (1988), the alien-fighting teen in Mars Attacks! (1996), and the imperious drug kingpin known as The Pin in Brick (2005) are just a few of his memorable roles. But now he’s taking the lead in the new indie drama Meth Head, as a young man who falls into a Shame-like spiral after getting hooked on the stuff that makes even the most clean-cut souls break bad.

Isn’t Eric Stonestreet’s Cameron a delight to behold on Modern Family? Yeah, well, chuck that guy aside for one week. On tonight’s episode of Ryan Murphy’s FX drama American Horror Story, Stonestreet guest-stars as Derek, a tortured patient of Ben (Dylan McDermott) who is deathly afraid of urban legends. (Stonestreet has dabbled in darker characters prior to his Modern gig, appearing as a killer on The Mentalist and Pushing Daisies as well as an accused rapist/murderer on Nip/Tuck, another Murphy show.) The 40-year-old Emmy winner counted the ways that audiences will find Derek wholly different from Cam.

Our month-long Schlocktober madness comes to an end with our celebration of everyone's favorite holiday, Halloween.
This week, to get us in the spirit of ghouls, goblins and jack-o-lanterns we take a look at three very different Halloween-themed films.
Up first, we see what happens when they try to make a Halloween sequel without Michael Meyers, but instead, with Tom Adkins, Stacey Nelkin, killer Halloween masks, corporate Irish super villains and their cyborg henchmen, when we examine Halloween III: Season of the Witch from 1982.
Then, we debate the merits of a nostalgic ghost story involving a young boy, a murder mystery and racial tension in the 1960's when we discuss Lady in White from 1988 starring a young Lukas Haas.
And finally, that lovable goofball is back, this time battling evil trolls and hamming it up with Ertha Kitt in the 1991 childrens' Halloween comedy Ernest Scared Stupid.
All this plus witty banter between friends,...

Once again it is that time of the year, where ghouls and goblins lurk around every corner, and that weirdo you walk past on you’re way to work is ten times more stress inducing. October has arrived meaning Halloween will soon be following, my personal favorite time of the year. While I eat, sleep, and breath horror year around it is nice to have a full month where its perfectly normal to spend all your waking hours thinking about the ghastly and terror inducing bumps in the night without being looked at like a weirdo or being labeled as a Goth kid (not that there is anything wrong with Goth kids).
This is also the time of year where casual and die-hard horror fans a like go out of their way to watch large amounts of scary movies. Often this is also when various friends or friends of friends...
