Broadway had been making progress toward an industrywide recovery, but new data shows halted momentum in the most recent season.
According to data from the industry trade group The Broadway League, overall grosses for the 2023-2024 season were down about 2.5 percent compared to the previous season, reaching $1.54 billion compared to $1.58 billion the prior year. And compared to the 2018-2019 season, the last full season before the pandemic closed all theaters, grosses were down 17 percent.
Even if viewed as largely flat compared to last season, that spells trouble for the industry, given the rising cost of producing a show.
“Every year our expenses go up at least five percent, if not more, because we so outpace inflation,” says Ken Davenport, producer of the Neil Diamond musical A Beautiful Noise. “So flat is terrible.”
Attendance was also largely flat compared to this past season, which ran from May to May, coming in...

The Cannes Croisette has been busy with receptions, parties, pop ups, dinners and the hustle and bustle of celebrities trying to get to the red carpet. Because fashion and film are entwined in a relationship that’s stronger than ever before, film festivals like Cannes are filled with fashion brand events that extend the style conversation beyond the flamboyant clothes of the red carpet. This year, brands from Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Dior to Michael Kors and Kilian Paris have all been having parties bringing together friends of their respective houses all amid the city’s celebration of film.
On Wednesday night, May 22, fragrance brand Kilian Paris hosted a star-studded party at a restaurant-turned-nightclub, where the brand launched its newest scent Sunkissed Goddess. Kilian Hennessy, the founder of Kilian Paris, greeted guests and posed for photos with them. Attending the party were Kelly Rowland (who had previously had a tense...

As the 77th Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25) arrives at its halfway point, here is THR executive editor of awards Scott Feinberg’s assessment of the awards prospects — at the Cannes closing ceremony and later in the fall — of the films that have screened at the fest so far.
The Two That Popped
One cannot know what the specific preferences and priorities of the Greta Gerwig-led main competition jury are, but one can categorically state that two competition films — both of which are so original and out-there that they have to be seen to be believed — have been particularly well received. Both garnered nine-minute standing ovations and rave reviews, including particular praise for their leading lady.
The first is The Substance, a body-horror flick from French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat that might be described as Sunset Blvd. meets Freaks, and an instant classic. Demi Moore, in a gutsy career-best turn...

Tom Ripley is one of literature’s great con men, and Andrew Scott is a perfect choice to play him. The Fleabag and Sherlock actor is charming and has a sophisticated air… and yet there’s something a little off about him. (Even when he played a priest in Fleabag, he had a mischievous glint in his eye.) He slips effortlessly into the title role in Netflix’s Ripley — all eight episodes are now streaming; I’ve seen the first four — and the lush black-and-white cinematography is a joy to behold. The series is badly hampered by an overly deliberate pace,...

On the second season of Max’s real estate reality show Selling the Hamptons, bad-boy agent and new castmember Dylan Eckardt reveals to the cameras regarding his castmates: “I barely like them at all.”
In another scene, agent Peggy Zabakolas walks away from a team get-together and says to her fellow agent (and onetime singer) Ashley Allen, who’s also a new castmember, “Let’s try to stop calling other women bitches.”
Amid the setting of the Hamptons home market — a residential fantasyland of mega-mansions expressly designed to engender a relaxed second-home vibe — the drama on the show includes accusations of trying to steal listings from each other, tensions over nepo babies in the biz and even an open house, led by castmember Mia Calabrese, at a residence where construction isn’t completed. On Friday morning, March 15, star real estate brokers across the country awoke to the news that the embattled National Association of Realtors (Nar), which represents around 1.5 million agents, had made an industry-altering deal. Not only will Nar settle several lawsuits claiming artificial inflation of commissions to the tune of $418 million, but also it will institute rule changes that may bring soaring real estate prices down while decreasing realtors’ commissions significantly.
“Nar has worked hard for years to resolve this litigation in a manner that benefits our members and American consumers. It has always been our goal to preserve consumer choice and protect our members to the greatest extent possible,” Nar interim CEO Nykia Wright said in a press release. “This settlement achieves both of those goals.”

The moviemaking business is alive and well, and somehow giving several talents the greenlight in a 24-hour span. Ranked in order of interest, from best to good-enough:
The Hollywood Reporter reports (from Hollywood) that Lily Gladstone and Martin Scorsese will reunite via Charlie Kaufman: the latter has written The Memory Police, an adaptation of Yoko Ogawa’s acclaimed sci-fi novel which the Best Actress nominee will lead and Scorsese is executive-producing. Reed Morano (I Think We’re Alone Now) is taking directing duties on the film, somehow both Kafkaesque and Orwellian, as the official synopsis suggests:
On an unnamed island, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses. . . . Most of the inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few able to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. Loki scored its biggest tune-in of season two for the week of its finale, rising by almost 200 million minutes over the prior week. That’s the good news.
The bad news for the Marvel/Disney+ series is that despite the jump, Loki still finished its second season well behind the first in terms of viewing time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Kids’ favorite Bluey led the overall rankings for the week of Nov. 6-12, and Friends continued to post higher than usual numbers two weeks after the death of star Matthew Perry.

Bre Tiesi had a dramatic exit during the Selling Sunset Season 7 finale and her future on the Netflix reality series remains in question.
“I sure did walk out. I haven’t decided,” Tiesi told Extra in an interview.
Co-star Emma Hernan was next to Tiesi and weighed in saying there were “a few pros and a few cons,” with the empanada maker calling herself one of the “pros” for Tiesi to remain on the show.
“Here’s one of my pros,” Tiesi said pointing to Hernan. “There’s some things that need to be worked out for me to consider coming back.”
Tiesi joined the cast in Season 6 and quickly found herself in the middle of drama at the Oppenheim Group. Although she was able to turn things around in Season 7, an explosive confrontation with a colleague from her past (Cassandra Dawn), Tiesi was seemingly done with the show.

All The Light We Cannot See notched another week atop Netflix’s English-language TV charts, with viewership for the limited series continuing to climb.
The World War II story based on Anthony Doerr’s novel managed 10.1M views from November 6 to 12, up from the 9.8M it racked up in the week it debuted. This is quite a showing for All The Light, and it’s by far the most viewing for any series this week.
But, as of now it still has a long way to go before it could reach the streamer’s most popular list. Queen Charlotte is currently at No. 10 on that list with just over 80M views in its first 91 days.
Selling Sunset Season 7 soared up the list to second place (from No. 8 last week). The latest installment of the reality series nearly doubled its weekly audience with 4.7M views.

Line Renaud and Dany Boon give low-key, sincere performances as they reunite for an eventful cab ride through Paris
A fourth collaboration between French funnyman Dany Boon and one-time music-hall sensation Line Renaud (who played his mother in 2008 Euro-hit Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’tis), this two-hander has a strong conceit: Madeleine (Renaud) relives her life in the backseat of the cab driving her through Paris to a nursing home, with troubled chauffeur Charles (Boon) as her confessor. The film’s gaze is fixed in the rear-view mirror far more than the Before Sunset-style dalliance it occasionally resembles, but it’s not straightforwardly nostalgic.
Madeleine’s tale starts off rose-tinted: played in flashback by Alice Isaaz, she has a wartime romance with an American soldier, which produces a son. But after her Yank beau heads back over the Atlantic, she takes up with wrong ’un Ray (Jérémie Laheurte), who resents the...

Bre Tiesi's complex relationship with Nick Cannon, the father of her son Legendary, was the center of a lot of drama in "Selling Sunset" season six, which premiered on May 19. The newcomer in Netflix's real-estate reality TV show was first announced as a cast member in August 2022, alongside longtime Oppenheim Group employee Nicole Young. Upon Tiesi's arrival to the Oppenheim Group in season six, her connection to Cannon ruffled a few feathers at the office - namely with costar Chelsea Lazkani. Throughout the season, Tiesi remained fairly open about her situation with Cannon - he's fathered 12 kids total with six women - despite some of her costars being openly against it.
In one season six episode, Young said of Cannon, without Tiesi present, "I don't understand his motivation, you know, if he does love these women, why complicate it? It's already complicated." Meanwhile, Lazkani, at one point, called...

November is shaping up to be a solid month of programming over at Netflix as the streamer prepares for the return of old favorites and highly-anticipated fresh titles. Among the lineup is the first part of The Crown‘s final season which will focus on Princess Diana (played by Elizabeth Debicki). Also returning for more drama is Part 2 of Virgin River‘s (above) fifth season. Selling Sunset is also back with new episodes for reality fans. And bridging the gap between scripted and reality is the launch of Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, which puts real-life competitors in the position seen in the hit Korean drama with less fatal consequences. Plus, don’t miss event series like All the Light We Cannot. Check out the anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, featuring the voice cast of Edgar Wright‘s 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Other can’t-miss titles? Best.
