Initially, Babes was thought to have breakout hit potential, and was scheduled on Thursday nights after The Simpsons. The show could not hold the audience and plunged to the bottom of the ratings. Producer Jeff Stein was brought in to save the show after one of the series' executive producers, Brian Levant, left the show. Stein's new direction was "no more fat jokes. Why would we make these women look sad? There's nothing sad about them. These are three vivacious girls."
