David Lynch’s New Project Is An Album And Music Video With ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’ Star Chrystabell
Enigmatic filmmaker David Lynch has reteamed with his longtime collaborator Chrystabell for a new album titled Cellophane Memories.
The album will be released on August 2 via Sacred Bones. Lynch has also directed a video for the album’s lead single Sublime Eternal Love, which you can watch above.
Lynch said today that the origins of the project came from a vision he experienced during a nighttime walk through a forest. Chrystabell said the album contains “many doors that are left open to wonder, wander and get turned around in.”
“It’s like mood music,” she said, “not that it creates mood, but more that it reflects your own.”
Cellophane Memories will mark Lynch’s first public project since Twin Peaks: The Return, which wrapped in 2017 on Showtime. The filmmaker teased a new project on Memorial Day, posting a video to X where he said: “Ladies and gentlemen, something is coming along…...

In the words of The Giant, it is happening again… again. It being another collaboration between director David Lynch and singer/actress Chrystabell, who starred as FBI agent Tammy Preston in “Twin Peaks: The Return.”
Over the Memorial Day weekend, Lynch cryptically teased something new for audiences to “see and hear” on June 5. And no, the project is not the rebirth of his planned post-“Twin Peaks” series, “Unrecorded Night,” canceled during the pandemic. It’s an album with Chrystabell, “Cellophane Memories,” out August 2 via Sacred Bone records. And along with the Wednesday, June Five announcement, the label shared a new video for “Sublime Eternal Love,” featuring Chrystabell and directed by Lynch. Watch it below.
Lynch and Chrystabell, who hails from Texas, first collaborated circa his 2007 film “Inland Empire”. After Chrystabell contributed to that soundtrack, Lynch worked on her debut album “This Train” and following EP “Somewhere in the Nowhere...

The prevailing wisdom on Tim Burton is that he's somewhat lost his way as his career has gone on. Whereas his early filmography is marked by some of the most influential films of the last few decades, his later output has relied a little too heavily on a CGI version of his famously hand-crafted aesthetic and neglected the fundamental elements that make a good story. However, with the news that his upcoming "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" once again embraces practical effects, we might be about to witness a Burton renaissance.
Still, there's no getting around the fact that in most rankings of Tim Burton films, his older work is usually at the top. In terms of critical response, you'll typically find "Ed Wood," his 1994 biopic of the cult filmmaker, in the top spot, followed by more universally beloved classics such as "Edward Scissorhands" or the original "Beetlejuice." I, having become transfixed by...

David Lynch hasn’t directed a feature film since Inland Empire in 2006, but he has directed many shorts since then, as well as all 18 episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return. Last month, we heard that he’s hoping to make an animated film called Snootworld, which was rejected by the Netflix streaming service… but while we wait to find out whether or not Snootworld is going to find a home, Lynch has taken to social media to tease that something is coming from him in June. On June 5th, to be exact.
In a video posted to X, Lynch said, “Ladies and gentlemen, something is coming along for you to see and hear. And it will be coming along on June 5.“

Lynch didn’t provide any hints as to what this something may be. A short film? A music video?...

In a cryptic post shared on X, the micro-blogging platform formerly known as Twitter, the filmmaker surprised his followers with a video announcement.

The director’s last television series, Twin Peaks: The Return, wrapped in 2017 on Showtime.
Lynch did not indicate what he was talking about, but earlier this year, he told Deadline that he hoped to find backers for an animated project.
Lynch began working on the script for Snootworld two decades ago with former Tim Burton collaborator Caroline Thompson, who wrote projects including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and the 1991 film The Addams Family.

We’ve been here before.
Just writing that automatically makes one sound like a David Lynch character. Or perhaps even more perfectly Lynchian: “It’s happening again.” Yes, it’s true: David Lynch has taken to Twitter/X to announce a new project — er, something — for June 5.
Rumors have abounded ever since his last project, “Twin Peaks: The Return,” wrapped on Showtime in 2017, that another project was in the works. About what, who can say, but the total and complete lack of information certainly has not prevented speculation.
This sure sounds like something of import this time, though.

Love the way he says “June Five” rather than “June Fifth.”

Henry Selick's 2009 film "Coraline" was unique in the history of animation in that it was the first stop-motion feature to use 3-D printers to construct its maquettes. For Selick's 1993 hit "The Nightmare Before Christmas," each character's individual face had to be hand-sculpted separately, requiring boxes and boxes of various Jack Skellington heads. 3-D printing for "Coraline" sped up the process and allowed the animators a wider variety of faces for the titular bratty girl and the terrifying adults in her life.
The story of "Coraline" was taken from Neil Gaiman's 2002 children's horror novel, itself heavily cribbing from Clive Barker's 1992 novel "The Thief of Always." In the film, Coraline (Dakota Fanning) moves with her parents to a remote house out in the middle of the woods. Coraline makes no mystery of how much she hates the move, how...

Once upon a time, Netflix was in the business of auteur-driven animation, allowing filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro work on his dream project "Pinocchio," giving Henry Selick his first movie in 13 years after Disney killed his previous project, letting Charlie Kaufman deliver an existential kids' animated movie in "Orion and the Dark," and rescuing "Nimona" after Disney pulled the plug. The streamer has partnered with the likes of Glen Keane, Sergio Pablos, Richard Linklater, Chris Williams, Craig McCracken, and Jorge R. Gutiérrez, but a name that won't join this list anytime soon is legendary filmmaker David Lynch.
Speaking with Deadline, Lynch offered an update on his long-gestating animated movie "Snootworld," which he's been teasing since at least 2009. Lynch co-wrote the script for his animated feature debut with Caroline Thompson ("The Nightmare Before Christmas"), with Lynch penning the second of the film's three acts.

David Lynch is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s biggest visionaries and an author who will forever be remembered in history among the names that have changed movies for the better. Best known as the author of Twin Peaks, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and the surreal, experimental movie Eraserhead, Lynch has recently revealed to Deadline that he has an idea for an animated movie Snootworld which he hopes to release in the future despite, as he reveals, the rejection he got from Netflix.
Lynch’s unique vision could be seen in many of his live-action movies or series, and while fans are hoping for a continuation of Twin Peaks, after the enigmatic conclusion of the third season, it seems that Lynch has other priorities at the time and that he desperately wants to make an animated movie.

Despite David Lynch’s feature-length animation project having been rejected by Netflix, the fillmaker is still seeking financing for Snootworld.
David Lynch has been quietly trying to get an animated feature film up and running and although he might not have found the required funding to get the project into production, he isn’t giving up yet.

David Lynch is claiming Netflix didn’t want to greenlight his “wacky” animated feature, “Snootworld.”
The “Twin Peaks” and “Blue Velvet” auteur told Deadline that his long-awaited animated debut has been two decades in the process. Lynch co-wrote the script with “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Addams Family” scribe Caroline Thompson; the feature has a strict three act structure, with Lynch penning act two.
Lynch revealed that Netflix allegedly “rejected” the project most likely since “old fashioned fairytales are considered groaners.” IndieWire has reached out to Netflix.

Deep in the morass of unmade David Lynch films––among the better-known likes Ronnie Rocket, One Saliva Bubble, Antelope Don’t Run No More, and Dune Messiah––is Snootworld, an animated, family-friendly project his ex-wife Peggy Reavey once claimed would be “David’s Harry Potter.” Some two decades since he began writing a script with Caroline Thompson and fifteen-or-so years since the last bit of speculation, Lynch has––in a somewhat uncharacteristic move––announced his hopes to find financing in an interview with Deadline.
This after, Lynch tells us, Netflix rejected a pitch for the feature, which Thompson revealed is the story of Snoots, “tiny creatures who have a ritual transition at aged eight at which time they get tinier and they’re sent away for a year so they are protected.” In yet another of his riffs on Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, chaos ensues “when...

Exclusive: Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive director David Lynch tells us he is hoping to find backers for his under-the-radar animated project Snootworld, even if Netflix recently “rejected” his “fairytale” pitch.
Screen legend Lynch has said little publicly about Snootworld until now and in recent months he has quietly tried to breathe life into the project by seeking out a financier.
He began working on the script two decades ago with former Tim Burton collaborator Caroline Thompson, writer of projects including The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, as well as 1991 hit The Addams Family.
“I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge,” Lynch told us in a rare interview. “I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this...

The limits of imagination run wild in Sony Pictures’ trailer for Harold and the Purple Crayon, starring Zachary Levi as the keeper of a magical crayon able to bring any drawing to life! Based on the beloved children’s book written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson, the family-friendly adventure finds Levi starring as a grown-up Harold who rediscovers the power to manifest objects like a preschool Green Lantern.
Johnson’s classic novel, Harold and the Purple Crayon, is about a curious four-year-old boy with a magic purple crayon that has the power to make anything he draws become real. Hollywood has been attempting to bring the story to the big screen for decades, and it seems time has finally arrived. The new film, directed by Carlos Saldanha, presents a new spin on the story, with Zachary Levi playing a grown-up Harold who escapes from the book into the real world alongside two of his friends,...

Harold and the Purple Crayon is a beloved children’s book written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson about a curious four-year-old boy with a magic purple crayon that has the power to make anything he draws become real. Hollywood has been attempting to bring the story to the big screen for decades, and it seems that time has finally arrived. Sony Pictures has dropped a pair of posters for the live-action adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon, which stars Zachary Levi.
As you might be aware, Zachary Levi is not a four-year-old boy, so the movie is obviously switching up the story somewhat. Sony hasn’t released an official plot synopsis yet, but here’s my prediction: A now grown-up Harold has mostly forgotten about his magical purple crayon, believing it was a product of his young imagination. But when Harold finds himself in debt to the mob, he...

The late '70s were a dark time for Disney. Following the death of Walt Disney, the studio went through much experimentation (not all of which was successful), and the departure of animator Don Bluth and several other animators led to a mini-crisis at the studio. Still, this was a very interesting time for Disney, which released many movies unlike anything they'd made before or since, from the sci-fi adventure "The Black Hole" to the criminally underrated "The Black Cauldron."
Loosely based on the first two books in Lloyd Alexander's "The Chronicles of Prydain" series, the film follows a bard and a princess who try to destroy a powerful and ancient magical cauldron before the wicked Horned King uses it to rule the world. This is by far the darkest animated movie Disney has made, one that starts with an explanation that the Black Cauldron's power comes from an...

Valentine’s Day may be a day of love, but there’s something about fear and murder that really gets the heart racing. Forget the countless Christmas rom-coms or Technicolor musical romances out there; sometimes, the most swoon-worthy romance is one between a human and a literal monster.
On the surface, horror and romance are two genres that shouldn’t mix well together; one exposes the worst and most disturbing cruelty humanity has to offer, while the other is meant to show the most tender and beautiful feelings we have. But as long as horror has been a genre, it’s been mixed with romance to frequently stellar results. Some of the earliest horror monsters, like vampires, are inherently sexual beings: their powers clear metaphors for intercourse and their ability to allure and entice humans with their beauty a key part of what makes them dangerous. Sex and romance isn’t always the same thing,...

Epic Games is getting a $1.5bn cash injection from Disney, as the two companies announce a new “entertainment universe” connected to Fortnite.
Following a financially iffy 2023, The Walt Disney Company is evidently keen to reassure investors that it has some big, lucrative ideas for the future. To this end, Disney has announced that it’s partnering with Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, to create a “new persistent universe” connected to Fortnite.
Announced as part of its shareholder meeting held on the 7th February, the new deal will also include Disney’s acquisition of a $1.5bn equity stake in Epic. February has barely gotten underway, but 2024 is already hard at work taking beloved artists from us. Mark Gustafson, a pillar of stop-motion and the co-director of the Oscar-winning film "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," sadly passed away on Thursday, February 1, at age 64, The Oregonian reports.
Though del Toro's name is in the film's title and his influence and style is in every aspect of the film, it was Gustafson who handled most of the day-to-day animation directing duties on "Pinocchio." His style and eye are as big a part of the reason for that movie's success as del Toro's.
Born on September 19, 1959, Gustafson had a long and celebrated career in animation that started back in the 1980s at The House That Claymation Built, when the animator worked at the celebrated Will Vinton Studios. It was there that Gustafson lent his talents to projects featuring the California Raisins characters, the claymation sequences in "Return to Oz,...

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” creator Tim Burton and “Gone Girl” writer Gillian Flynn are tackling a remake of “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman” for Warner Bros.
Burton is directing the upcoming film from a script by Flynn. The science-fiction horror story follows a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after an alien encounter and exacts revenge on her cheating husband. It’s unclear how closely this new take will follow the original 1958 movie, starring Allison Hayes, William Hudson and Yvette Vickers. The first film reportedly carried a budget of just $88,000 — so it’s reasonable to assume the remake will have a slightly higher price tag.
The project reteams Burton with Warner Bros., where he is currently working on the sequel to his 1988 movie “Beetlejuice.” The follow-up film about a pesky poltergeist, newly and fittingly titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” will be released in theaters on Sept. 6. His other directing credits include “Edward Scissorhands,...

If you’re a fan of animation, you know the name John Musker, whose four decades at Disney included writing and directing such classics as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Moana. Since retiring from the studio in 2018, he independently pursued an idea for a playful hand-drawn short, which he populated with caricatures of dozens of people from his life, among them fellow animators, CalArts classmates and Disney studios execs.
I’m Hip — shortlisted for an Academy Award — is a charming, music video-like film featuring a cat singing the catchy title song, Dave Frishberg’s 1970s recording of a tune he wrote with Bob Dorough. “[The song’s] very witty, and I always thought that would make for a fun short,” says Musker, 70.
“I have a penchant for teasing people,” he says, and his film “teases people who are so desperate to be on the cutting edge of things. Certainly Los Angeles is full of those people.

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. Tim Burton in episode 102 of Wednesday. Cr. Vlad Cioplea/Netflix © 2022 Tim Burton has been one of the most prolific directors for decades. Starting with his breakout hit in 1984 with the beloved Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, his other big hits include Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Ed Wood. As many know, he has always had a love for animation, having produced admired animation films like The Nightmare Before Christmas and along with co-directing Corpse Bride. Even before hitting it big, Burton made animated shorts. What may surprise some is that before becoming a movie director, Burton worked as an animator at The Walt Disney Studios. In past interviews with us, Burton has revealed that, contrary to expectations, he did not enjoy working in animation at Walt Disney. The concept of the holiday movie began back in 1898 with G.A. Smith’s pioneering silent film Santa Claus. The first of its kind to show the depiction of Santa that only runs just shy over a minute.
Since then Hollywood has belted out an array of films that have either been true to the genre such as A Christmas Story; The Holiday; Miracle On 34th Street; Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey or films like Die Hard; Brazil, and Gremlins that have teetered on the edge of identifying as a holiday film.
Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

Horror for Christmas? Yes, I’m here to holly your jolly, deck your halls, and sacrifice your children to Krampus. What a merry holiday season indeed! Since our October vid focused on Halloween Specials, I figured the Spooky Christmas crossovers deserved some attention as well.
As a kid, my family did have Christmas watching traditions like most. We did Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Frosty, Charlie Brown, Garfield, Home Alone, Gremlins (Ahhhh it’s controversial), Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands…and my mom may have snuck in Black Christmas. She was and is a fan of Holiday-based Horror. Her favorite being My Bloody Valentine. All of this is totally normal. So, as you can probably guess, the tradition has continued.

Ten films representing a broad range of visual effects work made the VFX category shortlist for the 96th Academy Awards, among them Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a rare animated feature selection.
Also advancing in the VFX Oscar race are The Creator, Godzilla Minus One, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Napoleon, Poor Things, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and Society of the Snow.
The VFX branch executive committee selected the shortlist. Next, all branch members will be invited to participate in a “bake-off” during which they will be invited to view excerpts and interviews with the artists from each of the shortlisted films, before they vote to nominate five of these films for the VFX Oscar.

If the fifth season of FX’s “Fargo” looks a little familiar to you, all the creators can say to that is…you betcha. Noah Hawley’s Coen-verse thriller series spinoff has sprouted numerous timelines and tangents (the current season even goes back 500 years at one point), but this year’s tense, fiercely comic installment is not at all coy about wanting to put you right back in the universe of the Oscar-winning 1996 classic, even though this incarnation takes place in 2019, only four years ago.
“Frankly, part of the pitch that I made about myself is that it was really a coming of a full circle,” said production designer Trevor Smith, who is returning to “Fargo” after working as an art director on the first season starring Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman, which is the closest to the vibe of the current season. “This fifth installment, I would argue,...

The Holiday season is not just a time for family gatherings and ugly Christmas sweaters. Sure, we love to sit around a warm fire with our loved ones and sip on Aunt Judy’s famous spiked eggnog- But the winter months are also a time of reflection, anticipation, and in some cases- the death of one thing, and the rebirth of something else. After all, winter signifies the death of leaves, grass, and the calendar year before everything is born again in the spring. So, naturally, it’s the best time for one to cozy up on the couch and revisit those comforting movies that put us in a nostalgic headspace while we reflect on the year behind us.
Such is the case for Tim Burton’s second outing as the director who brought audiences into our “Dark Batman Era” with 1992’s Batman Returns. This is a movie that, like any piece of Batman media,...

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. That leaves a sackful of Christmas films that should have also Oscar nominations. Here are five of them.
“Love Actually”
Writer-director Richard Curtis was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1995 but has never landed a follow-up bid. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).
Perhaps the biggest omission,...
