Carla Gugino has been able to sustain a lengthy career with a wide array of projects. From her early days, she made a mark co-starring with Pauly Shore in Son-In-Law and continued with indies such as Electra Luxx and Women in Trouble. Over her forty years on screen, starting way back in an episode of Webster when she was 17, Carla Gugino was able to bring an ability to play comedy, drama, sci-fi, and action with equal measure. She starred in sitcoms like when she acted opposite Michael J. Fox on Spin City. Recently, she’s been able to parlay a collaboration with Mike Flanagan on projects like The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, as well as her recent turn in The Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix.

Carla Gugino recently told BuzzFeed that her beloved role in Robert Rodriguez’s 2001 family action film “Spy Kids” was “physically totally impossible.” The actor was 27 years old when she filmed the movie and played Ingrid Cortes, the mother of two spies. By Gugino’s math, the character didn’t add up.
“It is so funny because I was 27,” Gugino recounted. “It was a really beautiful kind of double-edged sword because I love that movie so much. And the whole experience was incredible, and the movies continue.”
“I love Ingrid Cortes. But it was funny because I was 10 years, at least, too young for the role because I was a spy for 10 years and then somehow had children who were like 9 and 11,” she continued with a laugh. “So it was physically totally impossible.”

Carla Gugino said she is still trying to figure out how she was cast as a mother of two school-age children at 27 years old in the original Spy Kids movie.
During a recent interview with BuzzFeed, the actress, who played Ingrid Cortes, looked back at her time filming the 2001 movie, alongside Antonio Banderas, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara. The action-adventure film, directed by Robert Rodriguez, followed a family of spies.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s role in Sex and the City and other ventures once made her one of the highest-earning actors in show business. At one point, her earnings rivaled movie star Angelina Jolie’s, which was surprising to Parker.

Jolie and Parker had two different career paths. Jolie built up her career through a variety of movies, like Girl, Interrupted and Original Sin. She also began developing a reputation as an action star. The Lara Croft films and Mr. and Mrs. Smith were just a couple of projects that demonstrated her credibility as an action hero.
Parker’s rise in stardom, however, might’ve been a bit slower. She became a successful film star in her own right with a few leading and supporting roles under her belt. Perhaps...

Sarah Jessica Parker has starred in a variety of films with a career that’s thrived for decades. There was one film she did in her earlier years she thought would be a game-changer. Unfortunately, it turned out to be anything but.
Why Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t see herself as a movie star Sarah Jessica Parker | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Parker’s most iconic role may arguably be Carrie Bradshaw in the popular Sex and the City series. But the actor’s career went beyond the television show. She entered the business as a child actor, and went on to feature in several movies like Footloose and Honeymoon in Vegas.
Despite her notable filmography at the time, Parker didn’t see herself becoming a movie star. If only because she didn’t see herself drawn to the types of films movie stars would make.

“One Night in Miami” premiered in theaters on Christmas Day last year and on January 15, 2021 it started streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It is Oscar and four-time Emmy-winning actress Regina King‘s feature directorial debut, adapted by writer Kemp Powers from his 2013 stage play of the same name.
The film imagines what would have happened if boxer Cassius Clay a.k.a. Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), singer Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), civil rights activist Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and NFL legend Jim Brown came together in a Miami hotel room after Clay defeated Sonny Liston in February of 1964. What transpires between these iconic men is a lively and timely discussion set against the backdrop of the tumultuous civil rights movement of the 1960s. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Oscar contenders from the film.

Before Golden Globe nominations were announced, Daniel Kaluuya ranked third in our predictions for Best Film Supporting Actor for his role as slain Black Panthers leader Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah.” But perhaps getting the nomination was the biggest challenge, because Kaluuya has since leapfrogged the competition and moved into first place. Now that he’s in, do you agree that he’ll win?
In the nominations round, Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”) was our front-runner, followed closely by Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). Now the order is reversed, with Kaluuya in first place with 71/20 odds, followed by Cohen with 37/10 odds and Odom with 39/10 odds. So why such a big change?

Leslie Odom Jr. is now an official Golden Globe nominee! The 39-year-old actor scored not one, but two nods for One Night in Miami on Feb. 3. Leslie is up for best supporting actor for his incredible portrayal of Sam Cooke, as well as best original song for "Speak Now," which is featured in the title credits of the film.
"I have never been through anything like this before."
"I have never been through anything like this before," Leslie told Et about the exciting milestone. "You know, we have our award season in the theater and stuff, of course. But it's nothing like this. It just, yeah, it feels very, very new. It's a new invitation that's for sure." This year's nominations mark Leslie's first time getting nominated at the ceremony, however, he already has a Grammy and a Tony for his work on Hamilton.

The nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards left much to be desired when it came to representation and inclusion this morning, but there were some strides worth celebrating when it came to diverse nominees. One notable nod was for Nomadland filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who became the first director of Asian descent to receive a Golden Globe nomination.
Chloe “Magic Hour” Zhao’s Nomadland starring Frances McDormand (who was also nominated for her performance in the film) has already garnered critical praise since debuting simultaneously at the Toronto Film Festival (where it won the People’s Choice Award) and the Venice Film Festival (where it won the Golden Lion), making it the first film to get the top prize at both festivals. Forget the highbrow critics groups. They’re influential, but the Screen Actors Guild Awards are more reflective of where Academy actors are heading. SAG and the Oscars don’t always line up, some of which is a matter of timing: Late-breaking movies often aren’t seen by enough of the SAG nominating committee. SAG voters tend to be more mainstream and younger than the Academy’s dominant actors branch, not to mention larger in number: Each year, SAG selects a new nominating committee of 2,500 members, about double the Academy voters.
Last year, eventual Best Picture contenders “The Irishman” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” scored four nominations each, including Cast in a Motion Picture and Stunt Ensemble, while Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” was shut out. NATPE Miami would hardly be the same without a splashy, big, packed and convivial Globo showcase, a fixture for buyers. But, held totally online, this year’s NATPE Virtual Miami, whoch kicks off on Jan. 19, is hardly the same. So it’s heartening to see Globo going for broke with its Jan. 15 Upfront, which catches the Brazilian TV giant, as so many large players in Latin America, with new structures, management and content. Following, five quick takes on what to expect from the event.
All Together, Right Now
Already hosting Brazil’s biggest linear TV network, its leading satellite-cable operator and its biggest Brazilian Ott service, Globo has now brought all three under the same roof. “There’s Only One Globo,” its Upfront slogan reads. That has multiple upside as Globo. “With Globo being unified, our [lineup for international licensing gains more structure, more diversity of content to serve partners and audiences from different regions of the world,” says Paulo Marinho, Globo exec director of networks. Globo ’s domestic viewership now spreads over mobile,...

When Eli Goree was cast as Cassius Clay, the boxer who would become Muhammad Ali, in “One Night in Miami,” he was the most prepared actor you could find. That’s because he had begun almost two years prior, when he auditioned for the role of Ali in a different film, to be directed by Ang Lee.
“I started preparing by gaining weight, learning the accent, going through the audition process,” Goree says. The role ended up going to “some other actor out of England” — ironically, it was Goree’s future “Miami” co-star Kingsley Ben-Adair, though the film has yet to be made. But Goree felt destined to play Ali.
“I believed that someone would make another Cassius Clay film someday and I wanted to be prepared to be the one to get cast,” he says. “So I found and hired my own boxing coach, and dialect coach, and strength and conditioning trainer.

It’s 1927, and we are inside a Chicago recording studio. A blues singer and her band banter about the music business and its inherent lack of equality.
It’s 1964, and we are in Miami, where Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown and Cassius Clay (as he was known for one more day) discuss their roles in society.
It’s semi-present day and we’re in a small town in Indiana, where a high school prom is upended by a non-straight pair. Stage performers show up to save the day.
Three films are arriving this month — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” starring Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, “One Night in Miami,” directed by Regina King, and “The Prom,” directed by Ryan Murphy, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and James Corden — that are all are adaptations of plays. This used to happen all the time but not so much anymore.
Until now.

Leslie Odom Jr. is looking good for his first ever Oscar nomination for his role in “One Night in Miami,” and if he wins, he’ll be one step closer to coveted Egot glory.
That’s because he’s already halfway there thanks to his iconic performance in the blockbuster musical “Hamilton,” for which he won a Tony for Best Actor in a Musical in 2016 after sharing the show’s Grammy win for Best Musical Theater Album earlier that year. If he ends up winning an Oscar for “Miami,” he would then only need to score at the Emmys to ascend the Egot throne alongside the likes of Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend and 13 others who have achieved that distinction.

As we try to squint our way to see what the next seven months hold, TIFF and Venice unveiled the first crop of awards contenders for the 2020-2021 year. At the top of that list is Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” which took the Golden Lion on Saturday evening. Poised to do wonders for distributor Searchlight Pictures on the circuit, Zhao has four possibilities at awards attention, which could tie her with Warren Beatty who achieved four nominations, in one year, on two separate occasions (“Heaven Can Wait” in 1978 and “Reds” in 1981). Depending on how the rest of the film year shakes out, “Nomadland” is at the top of the heap in several categories.

Let me preface this by saying that it’s only September and we’ve got a long, long, long way to go before the Covid-19 delayed Oscars next April. But even at this early, speculative stage of the awards conversation, this is pretty remarkable: there could be two or more women nominated for Best Director for the first time in history. What’s more jaw-dropping is that we could also see the first two women of color ever nominated for directing.

The Moomins, with their hippo-like silhouettes, are beloved cartoon characters familiar to readers around the globe. But less is known about their creator, the bisexual, Swedish-speaking, Finnish visual artist and author Tove Jansson and her surprisingly unconventional life. The engaging biopic “Tove,” from Finnish helmer Zaida Bergroth, goes a long way toward remedying that knowledge gap. Featuring a mesmerizing lead performance by Alma Pöysti, the sensuously textured film, shot on 16mm, concentrates on a formative decade in Tove’s life (from the mid-1940s to mid-’50s) and explores her artistic and personal passions, and the challenges they entail. With multiple hooks, sales and festival interest should be strong.

2020 TIFF: Mundruczó, Franco, Rosi, Jasmila Zbanic & Chaitanya Tamhane Among High Profile Selections
With the red carpets remaining in storage this year and A-list players making no plans to quarantine for two full weeks in Canada’s capitol, this year’s slimmed down version of TIFF is many things: studio-less, gender-parity friendly, more Venice than Cannes, docu-centric, and pro-Canuck edition. Variety can exclusively reveal the trailer for “Playing Hard” director Jean-Simon Chartier’s feature documentary “They Call Me Dr. Miami,” which is being shopped to buyers at the Efm this week.
Commissioned by Documentary Channel and set to bow at the Miami International Film Festival next month, the film follows Dr. Michael Salzhauer — also known as Dr. Miami — who is one of the most famous plastic surgeons in the U.S., and the first doctor to livestream graphic procedures such as tummy tucks and breast augmentations on Snapchat, where he has more than two million followers.
With a two-year patient waiting list, the film examines how Salzhauer grapples with the reality of selfie culture, backlash to his controversial videos and his status as a social media superstar, all while balancing his roles as a father of five, and a conservative Orthodox Jew who observes the Sabbath.

New York City – Although many people will never think of Sarah Jessica Parker in any other role than Carrie Bradshaw of “Sex and the City,” the actor makes a major breakout with her new film, “Blue Night,” which premiered (naturally for her) at the 17th Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on April 19th, 2018.

“Blue Night” is set in New York City, and can be reasonable described as “Carrie Bradshaw through the looking glass.” Parker portrays Vivienne, a jazz singer whose career has always taken precedent over her life. She receives some devastating news, and because she is estranged from her mother, daughter and ex-husband, she has few resources to turn towards. The film follows her character through 24 hours as she processes her news, which includes a guest vocal at an NYC jazz club.

Hello! Robert here. The other night as I was enjoying my long Fourth of July weekend I was in the mood for a movie; something I hadn't seen, something light and funny, something for a summer night on the couch with a bottle of rosé. After clicking around on HBONow for a few minutes boy did I ever find what I was looking for: a gem of a '90s pseudo-intellectual rom-com called Miami Rhapsody. Won't you take a journey back in time with me and explore this strange little film?...

It is a momentous day for Sex and the City fans around the world as Sarah Jessica Parker celebrates her 50th birthday. While the role of Carrie Bradshaw made Sarah a fashion icon and a superstar, she has starred in a wide variety of films and television shows over four decades. Parker began her career as a child star on the stage in Annie, and has gone on to become an enduring fixture in pop culture.
Her movie career was launched with supporting roles in '80s teen comedies Footloose and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, but soon she grew into a leading lady with memorable roles in a string of early 1990s comedies. Parker might be best known for romantic comedies these days, but over the last 30 years she's impressed critics in roles as diverse a mystical witch, an egotistical talkshow host and the embodiment of a single woman of the 2000s.

Hocus Pocus has been on the telly a lot lately. I guess that means it's October? I started to watch but Bette Midler forced me away with her insane voicework. I swear every other word in every line of her dialogue she treats like it's the climax of the sentence And the movie. It's just impossible to listen to. Good grief that movie is noisy.
And so much mugging! I'm surprised I still had a wallet by the time the credits rolled.
Remember when Sarah Jessica Parker was a silver screen sex symbol? That girl has had so many acts in her career. The comic but non-ironic sex symbol years were inbetween the memorable TV personas from the early Square Pegs geekery and the Sex and the City Mega-Icon status. Let's call it the "SanDeE*" years. What a strong stretch that was for her. So many enjoyable performances in mostly good films: L.A. Story,...

Leading up to the 30th year of the Miami International Film Festival, produced and presented by Miami Dade College, a 29-day retrospective will count down one film from each year of the Festival’s history. The event will being January 26 with a rare 35mm print of Pedro Almodóvar's "Dark Habits." Miff was the first festival to bring Almodóvar to North American audiences in 1984. Miff exec director Jaie Laplante exclaims, "I love milestones! What a treat it has been to look through our back catalogues, reliving the excitement of Miff’s great moments, and recharting the growth from the early triumphs of our founding fathers to the new era of our modern festival with a firmly established reputation as a key launch pad for Ibero-American and international films in the United States.” Other films included are David Frankel's "Miami Rhapsody" (he'll be there for for a Q & A), Joel Coen's.

Hey all you closet birdwatchers, time to finally chime in! Fox 2000 Pictures has released a first look photo for their upcoming comedy The Big Year, starring quite a cast, but namely Owen Wilson, Steve Martin and Jack Black, as seen in the photo below, from IMDb (via Cinema Blend). The wacky comedy, that we have yet to see a trailer for, is about three avid bird watchers who compete to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event. Also stars Jim Parsons, Rosamund Pike, Rashida Jones, Joel McHale, Anjelica Huston and others. It's an early first look, but I bet there's plenty more coming soon. Check it out! Three avid bird watchers compete to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event. The Big Year is directed by Oscar winning filmmaker David Frankel, who directed Miami Rhapsody, The Devil Wears Prada...

Update: At Twitter, Kevin Pollak replies: Really, I've enjoyed your insights/musings for quite a while, but your angle on my recent work/luck has me questioning yours. Kevin Pollak is a respected actor-comedian with memorable turns in such movies as The Usual Suspects, A Few God Men and Miami Rhapsody. But in just the past year he signed on to host not one but two TV game shows which then became mired in controversy. The most recent is Fox's Million Dollar Money Drop which aired during the most recent Christmas week and erupted in an on-air gaffe that cost one couple $800,000. But a year ago Pollak surprised many when he agreed to host Fox's Our Little Genius. True, it had all the makings of a sure thing: big-name producer - Mark Burnett; killer time slot - airing behind TV's top show American Idol; and adorable kid prodigies showing off their knowledge for cash prizes.

"The Devil Wears Prada" director David Frankel has picked up a movie biopic about Simon Cowell's protege Paul Potts, after the project was axed earlier this year. Opera singer Potts shot to fame after winning the first series of U.K. reality TV show "Britain's Got Talent" in 2007 and Hollywood producers announced plans to take his story to the big screen.
The film was canceled earlier this year after they failed to find an actor to fill the lead role and Cowell subsequently dropped Potts from his SyCo label. But Frankel has decided to revive the project, entitled "One Chance", according to movie website TheWrap.
David Frankel's other directed movies include "Miami Rhapsody", "Dear Diary", "Just Like You Imagined", and "Marley & Me". The helmer won the Academy Awards for Best Live Action Short Film for his 1996 project "Dear Diary".

Naomi Campbell is celebrating 25 years in the modeling business. Where did the time go? That is quite an accomplishment in any profession, but especially in the cut throat world of modeling, which is always looking for the next young, hot thing. Twenty-five years in the modeling world is about 3,000 in dog years, right?
I worked with Naomi once years ago back when I was a field director at "Entertainment Tonight." It was at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City and we were talking with Naomi about her acting gig in the film "Miami Rhapsody" starring Sarah ...

We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competitive field. Previously: 78, 79, 81, 82, 83, 85, 87, 88 and 90.
When The Bridges of Madison County premiered in summer (a rare Eastwood berth, indeed) it seemed like Streep might finally win her 3rd Oscar the following Spring. She'd been away from the awards race in what seemed like forever. Hilariously, that "forever" absence had only been four consecutive years (1991-1994) but for Meryl, that's an eternity. In fact, a four year absence had never happened before and has never happened since all these years later. By the end of the 1995 film year, a really actressy one, the story was a lot different and the race was suddenly all but sewn up for Sarandon with only Streep and Stone as dark horse possibilities.
1995 the nominees were
Susan Sarandon, Dead Man WalkingElisabeth Shue, Leaving Las Vegas *Nathaniel's pick. This performance kills me.*
Sharon Stone, Casino

A father's expectations. A son's dream. A brother's rivalry.
Runt of the Litter is the acclaimed, semi-autobiographical one-man show (soon to be a major motion picture) chronicles volatile family dynamics as well as triumph despite great odds. Always considered too small to play football, former Houston Oiler Bo Eason developed-then never deviated from-a 20-year-plan to go pro. But his plan didn't include a more talented older brother whose success would forever eclipse his own.
Written and performed by Bo Eason and directed by Larry Moss, Runt of the Litter opens in the final hour of Jack Henry's lifelong dream, with only one thing that stands in his way: his brother. The play closely examines what happens to two brothers in a family of overachievers: when their parents assure their oldest son that he is the one destined for football superstardom, and they tell their youngest son he is too small to compete.
