Netflix has teamed up with Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow for a harrowing ticking-clock thriller.
The streamer has greenlit a film centered on a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S.
Sources say the story will be told in real time and that its tone harkens back to Bigelow’s foreboding 2012 hit Zero Dark Thirty, which chronicled the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the Navy Seal mission to kill the terror leader.
Netflix wouldn’t confirm any details about the project, merely announcing an untitled Bigalow movie at their upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City on Wednesday.
The film — along with a Happy Gilmore sequel announced today — is the first movie greenlit by the streamer’s new film division head Dan Lin. However, the film’s development began during the division’s previous regime led by Scott Stuber,...

The decade of the 1990s can be considered the essential era of movie history, as it paved the way for all modern cinematography. We all know Tarantino and Lynch’s masterpieces, however, there are lots of films which gained unfairly less attention.
Here are 7 movies of that decade, picked by Reddit, claimed to be must-watches for all.
1. Go (1999)
Directed by the Road House filmmaker Doug Liman, this comedy thriller was considered to be even a “junior” Pulp Fiction. It tells four captivating interlinked stories over the course of one night in LA, narrated non-linearly and from several different viewpoints.
2. Sleepers (1996)
Next comes the star-studded crime drama, following a group of men, who are given a chance to perform revenge on a guard brutalizing them at a detention center. It stars such movie giants as Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Bacon.
3. Dark City (1998)

Recently, I wrote an article about how Ron Howard’s Cocoon was hard to find in any format. It came out on DVD many years ago but went out of print and has never been issued on Blu-ray. You also can’t find it digitally on any platform. This is a perfect example of why you should always hang on to your physical media, as I’m lucky enough to own the now out-of-print DVD of that movie, and while it’s far from an ideal copy, it’s something.
But that got me thinking. What other movies are hard to find? I opened up the forum on Twitter, and I was shocked by how many prominent films aren’t available digitally and have gone out of print on disc, making them all the more precious for collectors. At the same time, there are some happy endings, such as Martin Campbell’s No Escape,...

It’s ironic that memory is the central theme of Piero Messina’s Berlin Competition title “Another End,” when so many of its twists and turns are so directly lifted from other films that it feels like you’ve seen them before; even watching it for the first time feels like rewatching. But if that makes this elegiac literalization of the timeless theme of “what is grief but love persevering?” a rather edgeless experience it’s not a wholly unpleasant one. Less designed to provoke than to soothe, perhaps the very familiarity of much of the movie is a virtue, letting us enjoy its sleek surfaces safe in the knowledge that there’s nothing much lurking in the depths to alarm us.
Indeed, the story’s central alarming incident has happened some time before the film even begins: a car crash for which Sal (Gael García Bernal) believes he was...

A scheduling problem knocks Benedict Cumberbatch out of A Complete Unknown – with Edward Norton stepping in instead.
James Mangold is coming off the back of Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, and has signed up to direct a future Star Wars movie as well. But slotted between the two is a project he’s been interested in for some time: a biopic of Bob Dylan, that he’s looking to press ahead with this year.
Timothee Chalamet – still riding high off the back in the title role of Wonka – has been cast in the role of Bob Dylan, and he’s still on board the movie. But one person who’s made an exit before filming has begun is Benedict Cumberbatch.

Some movies can be so iconic that they accidentally end up damaging their own genre in the long run. For instance, we’re all aware of how cyberpunk has been living in the shadow of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner since 1984, with it being nearly impossible to tell a story about a futuristic dystopia without bringing out the flying cars and neon signage. Fortunately, there are exceptions to this rule, and one of my personal favorites happens to be Kathryn Bigelow’s 1995 sci-fi thriller Strange Days.
A genre-bending murder mystery that takes place in the “distant” future of 1999, this special little film has aged spectacularly well despite its pre-millennial DNA, tackling pertinent issues like race relations and police corruption while also telling a surprisingly engaging love story. This is precisely why I think revisiting this retro-futuristic New Year’s extravaganza is the perfect way to start off 2024 with a bang.

Production designer Ruth De Jong and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick have worked on projects helmed by incredible filmmakers. De Jong earned an Emmy nomination for David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return and worked as the production designer on Jordan Peele’s Us and Nope. Mirojnick, meanwhile, earned an Emmy for Behind the Candelabra — one of her six collaborations with Steven Soderbergh — and designed costumes for Steven Spielberg (Always), Richard Attenborough (Chaplin), Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days), Oliver Stone (Wall Street) and Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Starship Troopers).
So the pair know a thing or two about what makes a great director. But it’s Oppenheimer writer-director Christopher Nolan whom De Jong and Mirojnick call the ultimate filmmaker.
“There is no other director like him, and I’ve worked with some of the best,” says Mirojnick. “His method of collaboration is very generous, and he shares a massive amount by comparison to anyone else.

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.
Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

Something interesting happened the other day. I reached out to Arrow Video to get a review copy of their upcoming Conan the Barbarian 4k release, The Conan Chronicles (which also features Conan the Destroyer). I was told their retail stock of the much-anticipated title had already sold out (don’t worry – more is on the way). To me, this is a very promising sign, with interesting companies like Arrow, Scream/Shout Factory, and Kino Lorber making really thoughtful, beautifully assembled 4K collector’s editions of cult hits on physical media that, despite being more niche than they were twenty or so years ago, are actually selling really well.
Studios have all but abandoned physical media, at least as far as library titles go. Some studios, like Paramount, still re-release their classics through labels like Paramount Presents, but for many companies, these titles are an afterthought, even for their biggest movies.

Colombia’s film landscape is undergoing a significant evolution. As streaming platforms grow in the country and international productions leverage Colombia’s tax incentives, new avenues have emerged for filmmakers to venture into uncharted territories.
Selected for San Sebastián’s New Directors competition, Juan Sebastián Quebrada’s “The Other Son” exemplifies this transformation. Franco Lolli’s work has undeniably carved out a niche for stories centred around Colombia’s middle class; Quebrada’s further explores and expands these narratives, opening up new areas for investigation in filmmaking.
In “The Other Son,” we follow the life of Federico (Miguel González) and his brother Simon, who revel in the throes of adolescence. Tragedy strikes when Simon meets an untimely death, plunging from a balcony during a party. As Federico grapples with this loss, he finds himself drawn to Laura (Ilona Almansa), Simon’s girlfriend, seeking solace in their shared grief. Amidst this emotional turmoil,...

Something inevitable has started to happen. Hardcore movie fans have stopped buying Blu-rays (although they’re in the midst of a slight comeback). Maybe it was the pandemic, when we were all stuck at home, or perhaps it was the closure of all of our favorite mom-and-pop physical media stores, but fans started to build digital libraries rather than physical ones. I get it. One of the reasons I got into buying movies on iTunes was that whenever a fancy new 4K restoration came out, they would upgrade the version you already bought. But, as Christopher Nolan warned recently, you should buy the movies you love on physical media because when you own something digitally, you don’t really own it.
Here’s why:
Digital Copies are basically long-term rentals:
While you can be reasonably sure that the digital copy you buy will stay in your library for a long time,...

"This is your life! Right here, right now!" The famed art house cinema in New York called Metrograph has introduced a new screening series of movies called 25Y2K. They're borrowing inspiration from the brilliant Crtierion Channel collections, featuring a thematic selection of iconic movies to feature in a special package. This time they're looking back at Y2K, and the "Millennium Bug", and how it affected cinema. "A computer glitch that was supposed to drown the world in darkness—[was] on everyone's lips, the air thick with the anticipation of apocalypse. Did that anxiety impress itself on some of the finest films?" Definitely. They're showing classics like Fight Club, Pi, The Truman Show, American Psycho, Strange Days, Audition, Being John Malkovich, Vanilla Sky, American Beauty, and others. To promote the series, Metrograph cut together a quick trailer with Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now" which samples a line from the film Strange Days.

Kathryn Bigelow’s underappreciated “Strange Days” features a line that goes something like “The issue isn’t whether you’re paranoid. The issue is whether you’re paranoid enough.” Although that film is set in 1999, it’s an aphorism that would work equally well in Stéphan Castang’s fun, violent, high-concept “Vincent Must Die,” as a punchy summation of post-pandemic — rather than pre-millennial — nervousness and malaise. Who among us has not gazed in dismay at a world that’s not just increasingly bad-tempered, but seems to hold against each one of us some focused, individual grudge? The times have doubtless always been bad, but they hit (and hit and hit) differently now, like this time, it’s personal.
Vincent is initially not paranoid enough/at all. A bit uninspired, perhaps. Low-level depressed, possibly. And carrying his inevitable thirtysomething disillusionment in a little schlub around the midriff, for sure. But not...

Movie maker James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water isn’t the last time audiences are set to visit the world of Pandora. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has big plans for the film’s sequels going forward, some of which he was willing to share with others.
What to expect from ‘Avatar 3’
Cameron already knows the general direction he plans on taking the Avatar series in the third film. The director confided that the world of Pandora will be further explored, but with a new voice as a guide in the upcoming sequel. Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully ended up narrating The Way of Water. Hollywood’s housekeepers and dishwashers are joining its writers on the picket lines. As the WGA hits the two-month mark of its work stoppage over a contract dispute with studios, and SAG-AFTRA is down to the wire on its decision to strike, the powerful local hospitality union Unite Here Local 11 has announced its own walkout.
The historic strike, the largest such labor action in the hotel industry in modern U.S. history, encompasses about 15,000 union members at more than 60 properties in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Local 11 — which bargains with hotels individually or through their corporate groups — contends the hotel sector is now profitably booming as the pandemic has eased. It’s negotiating for an immediate $5 hourly wage boost, with $3 bumps to follow annually over the course of its three-year contract, totaling $11. Detroit rapper Boldy James is back with his second release since getting seriously injured in a car accident this past January. Entitled Prisoner of Circumstance, the new EP features seven tracks capturing his signature flow and featuring production from friend and collaborator, Chan Hays. Stream the project below.
In January, James’ publicist announced that he had broken a vertebrae in his neck and suffered other orthopedic injuries from a two-car accident in the Detroit area, and underwent “extensive surgery” before reaching a stable condition. Nonetheless, the 40-year-old rapper shared new music just days later, dropping Indian Jones, an album made in collaboration with producer RichGains… and now, with Prisoner of Circumstance, he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

Nonetheless, the 40-year-old rapper shared new music just days later, dropping Indian Jones, an album made in collaboration with producer RichGains… and now, with Prisoner of Circumstance, he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

The Monkees‘ earliest hits spoke of girls, love, and good times. However, as they evolved as musicians and grew in the public eye, their music also changed. Songs with more topical themes were explored in the band’s fourth album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Jones Ltd. One included a song that exposed how musicians felt about groupies in the 1960s.
The Monkees members included Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images The Monkees released ‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.’ in 1967
Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. was the fourth album of four released by The Monkees. It was their final LP of 1967.
With that record, The Monkees broke a record that remains. Per Billboard, the band had four number-one albums in one calendar year.
The group dropped their eponymous debut album at the end of 1966, where it remained locked at the number one position for eight weeks.

On the eve of its 30th birthday, Super Mario Bros.––the 1993 film, not the groundbreaking video game––might be due for critical reappraisal. Dubbed “a complete waste of time and money” by Roger Ebert, rejected by Mario’s custodians at Nintendo, and described with utter contempt by its own stars, it has enjoyed three decades of cultural life as a punchline about the dismal standards of game-to-movie adaptations. Yet the tonally confused kids’ movie, viewed in retrospect of a fully Marvelized Hollywood, recalls a time when genuinely weird, mutant art could sometimes break out of the franchise-blockbuster laboratories. Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the spousal duo behind cult cyberpunk sensation Max Headroom, it liberally reimagines the vaguely defined Mario lore of plumbers, princesses, mushrooms, and dinosaurs into a gothic urban fever dream. Pursuing a kidnapped girl, the titular brothers––Bob Hoskins as Mario, adopting a wheezing, gesticulating meatball...

As long ago as 2006, James Cameron announced that if his then-upcoming film "Avatar" was a hit, he would shift his entire career toward making sequels to it. Weirdly, Cameron was inspired by director Gore Verbinski, who, at the time, had just made two enormously expensive "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels back-to-back. It seems that anything Verbinski could do, Cameron was determined to do better. When "Avatar" opened in 2009, and swiftly became the most successful movie of all time, the writing was on the wall: Cameron was officially in the "Avatar" business in perpetuity. Any of Cameron's other planned projects were put on hold. His manga adaptation, "Alita: Battle Angel," was passed to Robert Rodriguez.
Cameron waited 13 years to make the first "Avatar" sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," as he was famously biding his time for VFX technology to catch up with the undersea visuals he wanted to create. However the reader feels about "Water,...

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is finally coming home.
James Cameron’s supersized sequel, which grossed a whopping $2.3 billion worldwide (enough to make it the third-highest-grossing movie ever), is making its way to digital on March 28 – pretty impressive, especially in our quick-fix era, for a movie that opened before Christmas.
In the sequel, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) are forced to retreat from their home after the evil corporation Rda returns to Pandora. They flee with their extended family, take refuge with the reef people and realize that, no matter where they are, the Rda will find them.
It’s a thrilling, emotional follow-up and one that clearly resonated with audiences. And it’ll be nice to be able to watch the movie anytime you want, especially since the release is festooned with new special features (get a glimpse of one of them above).

Twenty-nine years ago, Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne were celebrating their Academy Award nominations for portraying Tina Turner and Ike Turner in 1993’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” This year, Bassett is nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar for her commanding performance as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and her longtime collaborator couldn’t be more thrilled.
Calling in between interviews for “John Wick: Chapter 4,” Fishburne tells Variety, “It’s what’s in my heart that I’d like to talk about more than what’s on my mind. I’m just really, really happy about all of the accolades that have been coming Angela’s way for this performance.”
Fishburne sought out “Wakanda Forever” early in its theatrical run, interested to see what the Marvel sequel had in store.
“I was just blown away by a couple of things,” he says, recounting the experience.

Tom Sizemore passed away on March 3, 2023, about two weeks after suffering an aneurysm. Once one of Hollywood's most ubiquitous supporting actors, he was always a reliable presence in any film he appeared in, with his trademark ice-cold stare and husky laugh. He also possessed a truly unique attribute: a brooding, taciturn toughness that has become increasingly rare these days, shared by the likes of Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, and Ray Liotta.
Sizemore was a cut above those guys, though, with an uncanny ability to turn his heavy-lidded, sparkling eyes from charming to chilling at the drop of a hat. Look at the actor's cameo in "Enemy Of The State." He essentially plays a comic role, a broad, larger-than-life mobster, and yet when he shifts gears to a more intimidating presence, it doesn't feel jarring, but genuinely menacing instead.

"Pulp Fiction" hit theaters on October 14, 1994 as a bona-fide, paradigm-shifting indie blockbuster. It was the film geek's "Easy Rider," a movie no one knew they needed until it got plunged deep into their veins. It's hard to believe Quentin Tarantino didn't know what he had prior to premiering the film at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, but, per a 2014 interview with his buddy Robert Rodriguez, his first screening for friends and esteemed colleagues wasn't entirely reassuring.
Let's take a step back and survey the cinematic landscape in 1994. Tarantino was the equivalent of Nirvana pre-"Nevermind." He was a hit with film geeks who'd mainlined "Reservoir Dogs" and connected with Tony Scott's high-style take on "True Romance," but there was something potentially gimmicky about his writing. His screenplays were laden with deep-tissue pop-culture references and wildly violent set pieces. Oliver Stone's take on "Natural Born Killers," released two months prior...

Great news for our hive of "Yellowjackets" fans: season 2 is almost upon us! That's right, Showtime's multi-timeline cannibal thriller returns next month and after waiting over a year for some answers, viewers are ready to head back into the wilderness. The fact that the series centers on a group of teen girls in '90s New Jersey (the time and place in which I grew up) was enough to pique my interest, but nothing could've prepared me for the wild ride this show would take me on. If you've not yet tuned in, all I can say is, what are you waiting for? Season 2 promises to be even more shocking, so catch up!

As our present-day dystopia grows increasingly dire, the more relevant speculative science fiction becomes. We've seen it before with Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days," a near-30-year-old film that effectively predicted the rise of voyeurism in social media and a growing police state in the U.S. We've also seen it more recently with "The Handmaid's Tale," a 1980s novel that felt less like a "what if" and more like a warning. For all its terrifying predictions, "The Handmaid's Tale" became a proper phenomenon when Hulu adapted it into a series in 2017. Success like that isn't easy to replicate, but competitors have certainly been making the effort. Amazon Studios is the latest streamer to bring a similar story to the fore, adapting "The Power" as a series starring Toni Collette. Given that's it's also based on a work of speculative sci-fi, there's already a bit of buzz about this project.

"Strange Days" is a film that promises a heck of a lot. In 1995, it was touted as a tech-y, grungy neo-noir set nearly five years in the future. Its apocalyptic setting — as well as the fictional tech that immerses characters into the memories of others — only gains relevance as time goes on. "Strange Days" predicted so many features of our present-day dystopia: the rise of social media (and the parasocial addictions that come with it), tech voyeurism, the perpetuity of police brutality, body cam exploitation, and smartphone journalism. At the same time, it accurately dramatizes the Y2K hysteria that would come to a head in the late '90s.
It's impressive enough that the Kathryn Bigelow-directed film precludes most of the above by at least five years, but it's made all the more interesting with the knowledge that James Cameron — who developed the story and co-wrote the screenplay...

“Have I not given everything?” These words, filled with all of the pain and grief of a mother who has lost not only her son, but also her husband, and given of herself to and for her people, are those of Queen Ramonda, played regally by Angela Bassett in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
When you see the name Angela Bassett in any cast list, you know that each scene she’s in will be one in which she captivates the audience, telegraphing everything felt through her words and body. Dystopian science fiction movies often reveal as much about the time they were made as the future they are predicting, although few films have the poles set as closely together as Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days." Controversial at the time for its disturbing depiction of sexual violence and racial injustice, the dark neo-noir was released in 1995, slap-bang between its incendiary vision of a society teetering on the brink of chaos at the turn of the millennium and the incident that provided a catalyst to get it to the screen, namely the brutal beating of Rodney King by LAPD officers in 1991.
Reaction from critics was mixed, often praising its atmosphere and technical prowess while questioning Bigelow's judgment and motives, and audiences didn't really know what to do with it. As a result, it bombed at the box office, making back just 8 million against its 42 million budget (via Box Office Mojo).

New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve are not exactly known for having movies made about them, at least compared to the volumes of movies made about Christmas. However, there are some movies about that transition time and some of them are great to watch during that short period after Christmas and before life returns to the usual humdrum of work and responsibilities. Here are a few of our favorites:
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! (1986)
Seemingly, every major holiday has a Charlie Brown special. Well, almost. New Year’s is not to be left out and got its own Charlie Brown special in 1986. While most folks will think of Charlie Brown as a Christmas cartoon or a Halloween one, this special is actually quite good. In the story, Charlie Brown doesn’t want to celebrate, he wants to be left alone so he can read “War and Peace”, however,...

Empire magazine recently posted an article in which James Cameron answered questions that were submitted by others who work in the entertainment industry – Guillermo del Toro, Edgar Wright, Robert Rodriguez, Harrison Ford, the Duffer Brothers, Carrie Henn, Sam Mendes, etc. And while answering a question sent in by Rrr director S. S. Rajamouli, Cameron admitted that he mourns the projects he won’t be able to bring to the screen because he’s too busy working on the Avatar franchise.
Rajamouli asked, “You have spent about 25 years in the world of Avatar (going back to when the script for Avatar was first written)… I am sure you will have many more stories/ideas that you want to tell. Do you ever feel bad, that you are not able to tell them?“
Cameron answered, “Hi, S.S. Two thoughts in answer to your question: the first is that the world of...

Director James Cameron’s Avatar 3 is already in post-production and parts of Avatar 4 have already been filmed. That’s while he’s doing promotional duty with the December release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to the original film.
In a Q&a with fellow directors for Empire magazine, Cameron was asked whether he felt bad that he was not able to tell all of the stories he wanted to because of the Avatar time suck.
Cameron said he had two thoughts on that. “The first is that the world of Avatar is so sprawling that I can tell most of the stories I want to tell within it and try many of the stylistic techniques that I hope to explore.
“And secondly, yes… our time as artists is finite. I will always mourn some of the stories that I don’t get to make.”
Despite that,...
