"The Office" is one of the greatest television comedies of all time, which is probably why it's still one of the most popular streaming titles (with rights previously costing $500 million) nearly a decade after it premiered on NBC. Despite a few rough seasons in the back half of the show's run, the series still stands tall as a pinnacle of small screen hilarity. Those low points came after showrunner/creator Greg Daniels left the series at the end of season four to focus on "Parks & Recreation," and they got worse after Michael Scott left Dunder Mifflin (something Steve Carell didn't exactly choose to do).
With both of those pillars of "The Office" gone, the writers struggled to fill the holes left in the show, both comedically and narratively, by making Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) the new manager and leaning more into the family drama of Jim (John Krasinski) and...

Netflix and “Elite” creator Carlos Montero have reteamed on the new medical drama “Breathless,” and Variety has been given exclusive access to new first images from the show.
“Breathless” is produced by Montero’s El Desorden Crea and executive produced by Montero and Diego Betancor. David Pinillos and Marta Font shared directing duties, working from screenplays by Montero, Carlos Ruano, Guillermo Escribano, and Pablo Saiz.
Alongside today’s photos, Netflix released a new synopsis for the show: “The Joaquín Sorolla is much more than a public hospital in Valencia where lives are saved every day. Doctors and residents work their fingers to the bone in the frenetic pace of the emergency room, where tensions, emotions and even desire accelerate the hearts of a staff that lives increasingly on the edge. The arrival of a distinguished patient highlights the complicated situation of the public health system, lighting the fuse for what...

The late 1990s had an odd fascination with the Devil and the end of days that gave audiences all kinds of crazy films with varied levels of success. Most of these seemed to come out right around 1999, the end of the millennium when people were starting to panic. However, some of these end of days films came out earlier and set the trend. 1997 was an odd year that saw the release of Dante’s Peak, The Devil’s Own, Volcano, the original Open Your Eyes, Seven Years in Tibet, and a bunch more. There was a trend for the end of days, but also a search for religion which then led to the perfect storm of both with The Devil’s Advocate (watch it Here), a bit end of days, a bit of religious mayhem, and a whole lot of cautionary tale.
In 1997, folks were getting ready for the big millennium change, but...

Principal photography is set to begin in April on “The Captive” (“El Cautivo”), the period adventure epic from Alejandro Amenábar, whose “The Sea Inside” won an Oscar for best foreign language film. Film Constellation has boarded worldwide sales, and will introduce the project to buyers at the European Film Market.
The film centers on the origin story of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the iconic novel “Don Quixote.” At the age of 28, Cervantes was taken captive by the Moors in Algiers, leading to his creative birth.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is on board to release the film in Spain next year.
The film is set in Algiers in 1575 when Cervantes, a wounded 28-year-old Spanish Navy soldier, is held prisoner by Ottoman corsairs. Faced with a ticking clock, a cruel death awaits him should his...

If you go into any AMC theater in the past year, you’ve been graced with one of the best theater chain openings of all time. I’m sure anyone watching this video knows exactly what I’m referring to. If not, it’s none other than Nicole Kidman welcoming you to the movies. Her onscreen presence has been nothing short of incredible. She has starred in some truly great films such as Eyes Wide Shut, Moulin Rouge, Cold Mountain, and this writer’s favorite Practical Magic. But back in 2001, Nicole teamed up with Alejandro Amenabar to make one of the creepiest supernatural horror flicks of all time. It’s a film that was not only a big box office success, but...

On the surface, there’s very little about either Open Your Eyes or Vanilla Sky that screams Erotic Thriller. Both Alejandro Amenábar’s 1997 Spanish original and Cameron Crowe’s 2001 American remake are frequently classified as psychological thrillers, or even dramas, due to their interest in exploring the downward spiral of the main character.
And yet, upon closer examination, both films owe a heavy debt to the tropes of the Erotic Thriller.
As we’ve previously explored in this editorial series, Erotic Thrillers embody the characteristics of Film Noir, albeit with a more contemporary perspective when it comes to sex and violence. There’s often a healthy dose of voyeurism and fetishism, typically embodied in doubles of characters (usually women). And, naturally, sex and death become intertwined as the desires of characters tend to result in dangerous consequences.
Nearly all of these elements are present in Open Your Eyes and Vanilla Sky.

Before he fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and a tragic personality of sorts due to the circumstances of his death, Kim Ki-duk had already become a controversial figure in Korean cinema. The thing in question were not his films, but his on-set behavior that included physical and even sexual violence towards the actresses, by himself or by his collaborators, so he was basically cancelled from his own country's cinema and spent the rest of his life in different Asian and European parts of the former Soviet Union, where he also filmed his two final movies. “Call of God” is a Kyrgyz-Estonian-Lithuanian co-production.
It is questionable if “Call of God”, that premiered at last year's Venice and we caught at Belgrade Fest, could be called his proper movie, since it was not finished by him, but by his Estonian colleagues led by Artur Veeber. However, Kim completed the photography...

Bobby Caldwell, the oft-sampled, blue-eyed soul singer behind the late Seventies smash “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
“Bobby passed away here at home,” Caldwell’s wife Mary tweeted Wednesday. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years.”
While no cause of death was provided, Caldwell had struggled with health issues over the past six years, which Mary cited as a result of an adverse reaction to fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Bobby Caldwell, the blue-eyed soul singer best known for his hit single “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
Caldwell’s wife, Mary, confirmed the singer’s death on social media on Wednesday, March 15th. TMZ reports that he had been battling an unspecified illness for several years.
As a teenager, Caldwell moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He briefly played rhythm guitar for Little Richard, but it took six years for him to catch his big break and land a recording deal with Tk Records. “What You Won’t Do for Love,” appeared on his 1978 self-titled debut album, and hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the ensuing years, the song would be sampled by a number of hip-hop and R&b artists, including Tupac on “Do for Love.”

La Pietà.Something strange is brewing in Spain. At this year’s Fantastic Fest, the biggest genre festival in the US, two Spanish horror films picked up major awards: Eduardo Casanova’s La Pietà won the top prize in the Main Competition, and Carlota Pereda’s Piggy won best picture in the Horror Features category. This year’s selection included not just one or two, but eight Spanish-made horror films (plus one co-production and a series): the sci-fi adjacent Amazing Elisa and The Antares Paradox; new work by established names like Carlos Vermut with Manticore, Jaume Balangueró with Venus, and Casanova with La Pietà; and the series Garcia! (In the interest of full disclosure: I’m a programmer at the festival.) Outside of the strong representation at this year’s showcase, over the last few years there has been a noticeable upsurge in genre pictures coming from mainland Spain:...

Zdf Enterprises (Zdfe) has acquired the international distribution rights to Spanish horror anthology “Stories to Stay Awake,” in Spanish “Historias para no dormir,” for all territories outside of Spain, Portugal, Italy and Latin America, which will be handled by series producer ViacomCBS International Studios.
50 years ago, Chicho Ibáñez Serrador became a household name in Spain thanks to his creation “Historias Para No Dormir,” a Spanish series which aired from 1966 to 1968 and again in 1982. In 2005, the IP was reformatted for the big screen as a group of shorts in “Peliculas Para No Dormir” (Movies to Stay Awake), with Ibáñez’s contribution “La Culpa” being the filmmaker’s final directorial work. He was joined then by several other Spanish genre masters on the project in Álex de la Iglesia (“30 Coins”), Jaume Balagueró (“[Rec]”), Mateo Gil (“Open Your Eyes”), Enrique Urbizu (“The Ninth Gate”) and, back for this new series reboot, Paco Plaza.

Buenos Aires-based Film Sharks Int’l. has sold the streaming rights to Spanish sci-fi dystopian comedy “Some Time Later” (“Tiempo Despues”) to U.S. Spanish-language Ott platform Pantaya, HBO Max Central Europe and Amazon Spain.
The absurdist comedy is the swan song of beloved Spanish director Jose Luis Cuerda who died from a stroke early last year at age 72.
Talks are underway with a pan-regional Latin American buyer, said Film Sharks CEO Guido Rud, who has managed to set up a stand at Cannes’ Marché du Film after narrowly catching the last flight out of Buenos Aires just as Covid-afflicted Argentina began to close its borders again.
“Some Time Later” is set in the year 9177 when the entire cosmos has been reduced to a single high rise which houses the elite, led by a power-mad king, while scattered around it are grimy suburbs where everyone else resides in barbaric neo-medieval squalor.

In a rush to complete an overdue screenplay, a screenwriter's past explodes into the present and his world begins to unravel... When he meets a neighbor from down the hall, everything begins to spin out of control, and he struggles to hold onto hope. Starring Ry Barrett and Joanna Saul, with Suzy Giannakopoulos. Production on AMC-Movistar Plus high-end original “La Fortuna,” starring “Supernova’s” Stanley Tucci, wrapped Tuesday in Spain, ending principal photography on one of the Spanish-speaking world’s most ambitious upcoming drama series.
Scheduled to bow this fall, “La Fortuna” also marks the first TV show from Oscar winner Amenábar, who directed “The Others” and “The Sea Inside.”
Both that ambition and authorship shone through on Monday’s last full day of shooting, which took place in Pasajes de San Pedro, a Bay of Biscay fishing village and shipyard on the northern Spanish coast, a half-hour drive from France.
Produced by Movistar Plus, AMC Studios and Mod Pictures, with AMC bowing the series in the U.S., Canada and Latin America and Beta Film selling the rest of international, the six-hour adventure thriller casts Tucci as Frank Wild, a modern-day, business-driven treasure hunter.

Fred Willard, who parlayed a knack for naive characters into costarring roles on the television series Fernwood 2 Night and Everybody Loves Raymond and in several memorable films, has died. He was 86 and his death was confirmed by his agent, Michael Eisenstadt.
“Fred was one of the busiest comedic actors in a career which lasted over 50 years,” Eisenstadt said in a note. “He had recently completed his Emmy nominated recurring role on Modern Family and can be seen later this month in his recurring role as Steve Carrell’s dad in the Netflix series Space Force. Jimmy Kimmel had Fred recur on his show on an average of every two weeks doing comedic sketches until the stay-at-home order began. As dubbing studios shuttered with Covid-19, Europe’s broadcasters were forced to pull U.S. shows that they couldn’t dub – France’s TF1 with “Grey’s Anatomy” – or, in the case of global platforms, sometimes release foreign series with subtitles but no audio dub.
Dubbing studios are now cautiously returning to work in Spain, France and Germany, though respecting sanitary protocols, such as eliminating physical scripts and installing screens karaoke style.
As the global industry begins gingerly to re-open audio facilities, however, two post-production facilities, both part of the Mediapro Group, have come up with a long-term answer to dubbing challenges that aims to facilitate post-production during and after coronavirus, allowing actors and artists to work remotely, opening up multiple technical and even creative possibilities for post-production audio.

Negan’s brutal executions of both Abraham and Glenn in The Walking Dead‘s infamous season 7 opener marked the most devastating moments in the series’ entire history, but one of the former Savior leader’s victims still doesn’t hold a grudge. Having said that, he’d definitely like to see Negan “put through the wringer.”
Michael Cudlitz might have had his character Abraham Ford killed off all those years ago, but he’s still working as a director on the show. He helmed one episode of season 9 and two in season 10 – episode 4 “Silence the Whisperers” and episode 7 “Open Your Eyes.” Cudlitz chatted with Negan himself, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and his wife Hilarie Burton Morgan on their show Friday Night In With The Morgans and was asked whether he’d like to give Negan a tough time in another directorial effort as revenge. The actor/director revealed that the answer is both yes and no.

The afterlife remains a popular subject matter to explore in media and Amazon Prime Video is diving in with their new series, “Upload.” The series comes from “Parks and Recreation” and “The Office” scribe — and Emmy-winner – Greg Daniels, and focuses on an app developer named Nathan (Robbie Amell). As the trailer lays out, Nathan has been in a horrific accident and in this future world needs to choose between surgery and dying, only to have his consciousness “uploaded” into a virtual afterlife.
Nathan chooses the latter and is placed in a fantasy world where he has everything at his disposal, from the ability to own a talking dog to eating anything he wants … as long as he has the money for an in-app purchase. The 10-episode series will follow Nathan as he gets used to living in the ritzy afterlife community of “Lakeside,” where his girlfriend Ingrid (Allegra Edwards) and her family have purchased space.

The Swedish film “Force Majeure” was a critically acclaimed darling but not exactly a box office hit. So there was an opportunity to take the film’s black humor and install the American charms of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell to see how it might fare commercially in “Downhill,” opening this weekend. But surprisingly, even box office hits abroad don’t always translate when remade with American actors, and the ones that do rarely resemble their original inspiration. Here are the highest-grossing American remakes of foreign films (all domestic box office figures via Box Office Mojo).

The Walking Dead wrapped up the first half of its tenth season in typically dramatic fashion. The penultimate episode, “Open Your Eyes” saw Alexandria doctor Siddiq murdered by Dante, who was secretly a Whisperer spy. As is traditional for the show, it was a particularly brutal death and marked a new escalation in the conflict between our core cast and the Whisperers. That continued to develop in last night’s midseason finale, which concluded with Daryl and his group trapped in yet another dangerous situation, having been outsmarted by Alpha.
The tension will make the wait for the Season 10B premiere an excruciating one for hardcore fans of the show. But now at least they know exactly how long that wait will be, as the series will return on February 23rd, 2020.

The Walking Dead season 10 suffered its first major casualty of the season in "Open Your Eyes," last Sunday's surprising episode that revealed that one of the Alexandrians was not who they seemed. As Siddiq discovers right before his tragic death, Dante is actually a Whisperer informant planted inside Alexandria to spy on the community and spark paranoia within its walls.
The truth is revealed to Siddiq almost by accident when Dante clicks his tongue, a sound Alexandria's doctor remembers well from the traumatic day when the Whisperers decapitated Henry, Enid, and Tara in front of him. The Walking Dead killed off yet another of its major characters in last night’s episode. The penultimate installment of season 10a, “Open Your Eyes” saw Alexandria doctor Siddiq murdered by Dante, who it turns out was a Whisperer spy. It was a brutal end for the character, who recently became a dad, but there is is an upside to it if you think about what the good Siddiq has done for the community. At least, this is how former Twd star Chandler Riggs feels.
The Carl Grimes actor was on Talking Dead following the shocking episode yesterday. When asked if he thinks Carol would be proud of the man he saved and invited into Alexandria shortly before his death, Riggs agreed that he would.

The Walking Dead aired the penultimate episode of season 10a last night and it featured a huge shock that threw everything we thought we knew into question. Specifically, one character was revealed to be a traitor while another met a tragic end. This set the stage for a thrilling midseason finale, with the above promo now promising some tense drama to come.

We’re seven weeks into The Walking Dead season 10, so it was about time that we had another shocking death on the show. Sure enough, yesterday’s episode, “Open Your Eyes,” the penultimate installment of season 10a, saw the demise of another popular character. And, what’s more, it revealed that someone else had been a double agent for the Whisperers all along.
The episode revealed that not everyone within Alexandria’s walls can be trusted and our heroes’ enemies have secretly infiltrated their community. In particular, Dante was revealed as a mole, as deduced by Siddiq when he was locked in a room with him and recognized the nervous tick sound he made. It was the same sound made by the Whisperer who held him down and forced him to watch Enid and others killed by Alpha last season. Unfortunately, before he could tell anyone, Dante strangled Siddiq to death.

Toward the end of Sunday’s The Walking Dead, we kinda saw it coming. But Siddiq? Not so much, even though the Michael Cudlitz-directed “Open Your Eyes” followed the show’s tried-and-true pattern of killing off characters: Suddenly play them more heavily than ever before, attempt at the last second to get us extra-invested in them, then… bam. How did the last friend Carl ever made go to his grave? Read on and find out.

Well, that was unexpected.
Siddiq (Avi Nash), still suffering from ever-worsening panic attacks, is able to pull himself together enough to realize that Alexandria’s plague is being caused by tainted water — due to a switched handle in the purification system and not from Gamma’s (Thora Birch) zombie dam, as previously theorized — and since Siddiq’s in charge of the water systems with Eugene (Josh McDermitt) gone, he blames himself. Dante (Juan Javier Cardenas) comes by to give him a pep talk and clicks his tongue in a distinct manner, causing Siddiq to realize that Dante is a Whisperer. In fact, he’s the one who forced Siddiq to watch as Alpha (Samantha Morton) beheaded his friends. Dante figures out Siddiq is onto him, they have a brief scuffle, and Dante strangles Siddiq, presumably to death.

It likely has something to do with the whole ‘zombie-ridden wasteland,’ but when asked straight-up about Daryl’s love life (or lack thereof), series showrunner Angela Kang told Entertainment Weekly that Norman Reedus’ fan-favorite is “just not wired that way.” Mostly due to his traumatic past.

Daryl’s such an interesting character that way because in some ways, when it comes to romantic relationships, he’s not a person that I think trusts easily, and...

On Oct. 12, 1936, as Spain’s Civil War raged, the aged Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno, rector of the University of Salamanca, rose to address rebel general Francisco Franco’s fascist supporters, declaring that he abominated their cause.
He risked execution with his near insanely brave speech. It marks the climax of “While at War,” directed by Alejandro Amenabar. The first Movistar+ Original Film, which carries one of the biggest-budgets of a Spanish movie in 2019, the psychological drama world premiered at the Toronto Film Festival as a Special Presentation and now screens at Mia in Rome. Variety spoke to Amenabar.
“While at War” marks your return to Spanish-language filmmaking 14 years after the Oscar-winning “The Sea Inside.” Why now?

David Hasselhoff dropped a sprightly rendition of Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On” featuring the Cars’ Elliot Easton on guitar. The shoegaze cover will appear on Hasselhoff’s upcoming LP Open Your Eyes, out September 27th via Cleopatra Records.
The Baywatch icon stays true to the original “Head On,” which Jesus and Mary Chain released as a single in 1989, complete with synths, drum machine and layers upon layers of guitar feedback. “Makes you want to feel makes you want to try,” Hasselhoff sings, his voice swelling over a searing riff.
