Milton Quon, an animator who worked on “Fantasia” and “Dumbo,” died of natural causes at his home in Torrance, Ca., on June 18. He was 105.
His son, artist Mike Quon, told Variety that his father was drawing up until his last days. He also acted in movies including “Speed,” “Chill Factor,” “Sweet Jane,” “The Cat Killers” and the TV series “NYPD Blue” in addition to working as a Disney publicity executive. He described his “Speed” character in a 2005 interview as the “token Asian on the bus.”
Mike Quon said his father maintained a sense of humor throughout his life. When asked about the secret to his longevity, he would reply, “A good wife and Chinese food.”
Quon was born in Los Angeles as the eldest of eight children and the only son of immigrants from Canton, China. He was encouraged by an uncle to pursue a career in art, before receiving...

It's generated some classics and more than a few stinkers, but too many buddy-cop films are simply boring

2 Guns shows that the cop buddy movie has flatlined. It only took 24 hours for the film to vanish from my mind – and I took notes. Yes, it's the umpteenth buddy-cop retread, where two wily but likable antagonists are forced to team up to fulfil their competing agendas. Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington play undercover operatives posing as drug traffickers in order to snag Edward James Olmos's Latin drug lord. Their chemistry and fast-talking effervescence are instantly appealing: Washington the swaggeringly confident dandy, and Wahlberg all nerves, jitters and querulousness.
But as usual, the problem is the formula, not the duo. Diverting as the banter is, there's no dodging the fact that Walter Hill's 48 Hrs has officially now been remade for the bazillionth time in 31 years.

While many critics bashed this one, I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen, and honestly, I rather enjoyed it. It’s not a terrific film, and not as animalistic as Jeepers Creepers, or as atmospheric as Salva’s, Clownhouse, but it’s creepy in spots, and it’s certainly a break from current trends. Rose McGowan (Scream), Ray Wise (Chillerama), Lauren Vélez (Dexter), Judson Mills (Chill Factor) and Daniel Ross Owens (The Final) star.

If Brave doesn't hit the target, a reborn Bourne just might. Here we look at this year's big-budget crowd-pleasers
Absorbed at a glance, the list of coming summer blockbusters always seems exciting. That's the point: these are not the year's subtlest or most profound films but they're the loudest, brashest, costliest pulse-quickeners on the annual programme. Trouble is, despite a level of anticipation carefully nurtured by the big studios during winter and spring (posters, billboards, teasers, trailers, tie-ins, tweets, featurettes, adverts, apps – everything but Will Smith himself coming round to scream taglines through the letterbox) the end result is so rarely a good summer's cinema.
There have been magical years. Oh, to go back to '96, with its headlining Independence Day and Mission: Impossible, backed by serviceable romps Twister and The Rock. Or to resummon 1982, when filmgoers must have wandered, happy and bewildered and increasingly hungry, in a never-ending circuit of screens showing E.T.,...

George A. Romero Presents Deadtime Stories Volume 1 Directed By: Jeff Monahan, Michael Fischa and Tom Savini Written By: Jeff Monahan Starring: Jeff Monahan, Nick Mancuso, Bingo O'Malley, Maryann Nagel, Amy Marsalis and George A. Romero I’ve been so starved for any little morsel of horror I can get my hands on this summer that I jumped at the chance to review this new offering from horror maestro George A. Romero. What a waste. My husband (who will watch anything) pronounced that it was crap within five minutes and left the room in a huff. I stuck around for the entire stink-fest. This “anthology” is comprised of three short films, interspersed with Romero sitting in a chair, cracking corny little intros that make the Crypt Keeper look like a master of prose. It’s a pity to see such a legend (Night of the Living Dead) reduced to this embarrassing...

There are at least three major horror releases coming out this week, with Bitter Feast, The Last Exorcism and Case 39. Some will cringe at these titles, while others will jump in horrific delight. The independent feature Bitter Feast from director Joe Maggio releases January 4th on DVD and Blu-Ray. This is a tale of revenge, as one chef gives a scathing food critic and blogger his just desserts. This film will release through Dark Sky Films. Other films also release January 4th.
The Eli Roth (Hostel) produced The Last Exorcism did very well at the box office considering its meager $2 million price tag. Yet, movie critics have been ambivalent, with comments like "a nice surprise" (San Francisco Chronicle), "[the film] is thoroughly engrossing until it loses its way about three-quarters in" (USA Today), and "the film’s docu-style and credible improv acting lay the foundation for an eerie and believable horror movie" (Chicago Tribune). So,...

Tom Savini, whose recently-released and well-reviewed documentary project His Name Was Jason (see our review here) was in Chicago promoting that film, and took a moment to share details on some upcoming projects, along with some statements about what Fangoria means to him.
“His Name Was Jason just came out and of course just before that was Fantastic Flesh. As far as acting, I’m supposed to play an English bare-knuckle boxer in this one thing but we don’t have the contracts yet. I’m supposed to play a gunfighter who is also pretty good with a bullwhip in a Western called Hired Guns shooting in Vancouver and they’ve also got Jeff Fahey and Zoe Bell. And of course the school is launching the fourth semester of the film program and directing Chill Factor episodes so I’m really busy.”
Savini was quick to point out the importance...

There were no Oscars predictions from this blog because too much of the proceedings felt pre-ordained: "Slumdog" cleaned up, Winslet Finally got an Oscar, and Rourke didn't get on stage and frighten the older Academy winners.
By and large I wasn't hugely disappointed with most of the choices. Winslet won for the wrong role, Penn managed to make hanging with Hugo Chevez more appealing than giving an Oscar to the undeniably weird but talented Mickey Rourke, and Hugh Jackman proved he's far more charming than most of his roles to date have shown.
Random thoughts that crossed my mind:
Didn't Christopher Walken talking about Michael Shannon feel like the passing of a very creepy torch? Seriously, Shannon looks like Walken 2.0.
On a similiar note, would have paid money to have seen Walken and Jackman do a song-and-dance number together.
On Still another similiar note, Jackman was wonderful. Funny, charming, smooth but never shticky,...
