Crime stories, action series, and comedies rarely converge satisfactorily. In recent years, Netflix has taken stock in presenting shows and films from Japan, Korea, China, and India that embrace this blend of genres and techniques. Like the recent show Obliterated, Netflix is banking on the star power of Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and superproducer Brad Falchuk. Co-created with Byron Wu, The Brothers Sun is an international production between Taiwan and Los Angeles that brings new talent to the forefront in Sam Song Li and Justin Chien.
Here’s the plot of The Brothers Sun:
“When the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin, his eldest son, legendary killer Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien) heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), and his naive younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) — who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now.

CBS has handed a straight-to-series order to Watson, from writer Craig Sweeny (Elementary), Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios, for the 2024-25 broadcast season. Morris Chestnut is set to play the title role and executive produce the medical drama inspired by the characters from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Last January, CBS ordered two drama pilots, Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston and Matlock starring Kathy Bates, as well as writers rooms for two medical drama projects, Watson and The Pact.
In anticipation of a series pickup, CBS and CBS Studios recently attached Chestnut as the lead and Larry Teng as director and executive producer of the first episode, paving the way to a formal greenlight.
The Pact, from the CBS/NAACP Production Venture, has been on a different timetable. It remains in development after attaching a supervising writer just before the start of the WGA strike and...

Actual People.Because when I fall into the abyss, I go straight into it, head down and heels up, and I'm even pleased that I'm falling in just such a humiliating position, and for me I find it beautiful.—Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers KaramazovHumiliation is one of humanity’s cruelest jokes, one of its most repugnant punishments. The Latin root of the word, “humus,” translates to “earth,” or “dirt,” the idea that a person loses dignity and returns to something inhuman, crude and trampled on. The fear of being humiliated is a specter persuasive enough to shrink whole personalities, curtail ambitions, end life as someone knew it. Many mainstream filmmakers avoid its narrative possibilities because, maybe, to degrade a character would mean to degrade the film itself. I don’t think that’s the case. To see humiliation depicted onscreen can be like witnessing a corpse flower blooming: compelling, strange,...

If you’re watching NFL games on CBS this Sunday and things suddenly turn upside-down, rest assured that nothing is wrong with your TV set. It’s just CBS’ promo department being a bit of a larrikin.
TVLine can exclusively report that this Sunday, Nov. 12, CBS will intentionally air its NCIS: Sydney promo spots upside down during NFL on CBS games, tying into the “Down Under” theme of the well-watched franchise’s very first international endeavor, which was filmed on location in Australia — that’s in the southern hemisphere, for those who skipped geography class — and premieres Stateside Tuesday, Nov.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.
Check out the “Tiny Beautiful Things” trailer:
Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Through multiple timelines, the series explores all the traumatic ripples the mystery created for countless people. The series will star Alycia Debnam-Carey,...

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Interview with the Vampire, author Anne Rice’s first volume in her Vampire Chronicles, had been among my favorite novels since I first read it in 1977 (I’ve read it many times since). It was imaginative in its construction and narrative voice — the worst that could be said was that it spawned a legion of mediocre vampire volumes (and movies and TV series) that couldn’t match its originality and depth, and those imitators persist to this day — but what I liked best about it was that it was a painful read.

For the first time in a while, Netflix is adding no new titles today, so let’s instead take the opportunity to recap what’s gone up on the streaming site over the past week, from Saturday, August 1st to Saturday, August 8th. As that encompasses the first day of the month, there was a huge amount of fresh content added to Netflix’s library over this period. To be exact, there were 49 movies and 24 TV shows.
On the film side of things, this haul includes many an acclaimed or cult favorite flick from across the decades in all kinds of genres. The highlight is probably the entire Jurassic Park trilogy, which has proved popular with Netflix users as the first two entries have been hanging around the top 10 most-watched movies list almost ever since arriving. 80s classic fantasy flick The NeverEnding Story and its sequel were added on the 1st as well,...

With the summer starting to wind down, Netflix appear to be taking their foot off the gas a little bit when it comes to releasing high-profile original movies. Over the last few months, the streaming service has debuted a string of in-house projects that have either been subjected to widespread critical acclaim or racked up huge viewing numbers, and frequently both.
Netflix can sometimes be fairly secretive about their viewership data unless they’re shouting their success from the rooftops, and having recently revealed their Top 10 most-watched original movies ever, you can understand why they went public. If you include the reported 72 million streams for Charlize Theron’s The Old Guard that would see it claim sixth spot in the rankings, then four of the Top 10 were released between March and July of this year alone.
However, despite having a huge number of high-profile originals scheduled for the rest of the year,...

A new doctor is coming to Chastain Memorial Park Hospital when “The Resident” returns for its third season this September, with this one played by Morris Chestnut.
Chestnut is joining Season 3 of the Matt Czuchry-led Fox medical drama as Dr. Barrett Cain, “an intimidating neurosurgeon hired by Red Rock Medical to turn around Chastain’s finances.”
Cain believes himself to be a superman physician, capable of curing crippling diseases, according to Fox. He’s charming when he wants to be, but utterly ruthless in his quest for money and power. His ability to exact swift revenge on any who oppose him will put the good doctors at Chastain in jeopardy and drive the season-long thriller arc.

The family of reality TV personality Lyric McHenry, who died Tuesday at age 26, has asked that “all speculation surrounding the circumstances of death cease until the real facts are determined during the current investigation by the NYPD and the City of New York.”
A statement issued on behalf of the family added, “Despite the speculation in earlier reports, at this point in time the cause of Lyric’s death has yet to be determined.”
The statement said that McHenry, who appeared on the short-lived E! reality show “Ejnyc,” was ” a brilliant, creative and lovely young woman who shared a deep passion for writing, film and a long-standing commitment to social justice. Pleasant enough, if not paper-thin and featherweight, The Perfect Match is a bland picture starring attractive people that never quite seems to connect the dots. The romance at the core of the story is between Charlie (Terrence Jenkins), an agent with an incredible home, and Eva (Cassie Ventura, perhaps best known as R&B singer Cassie who had a hit single Me & U a few years ago), a gorgeous women of little substance — although we learn she does like House of Cards. At one point in their friends with benefits arrangement, director Billie Woodruff (Honey, Addicted) makes his point with a montage scored to current radio hit Player by Tinashe, in one of the many moments that feel a little too on the nose.
With an uneven ensemble, The Perfect Match attempts to add context to Charlie’s life: his sister Sherry (Paula Patton) is conveniently a therapist who offers...

Chicago – Halle Berry has had a career of diverse and award-winning roles, and takes on another provocative character in the new movie, “The Call.” Her co-star in the film is Morris Chestnut, a versatile lead and character actor with films as varied as “Boyz n the Hood’ and “The Best Man.” They both honor the acting craft.
“The Call” is a tense and symbolic thriller, about a kidnapping in Los Angeles. Halle Berry portrays Jordan, a 911 operator who gets too involved in the crime, and takes it personally. Morris Chestnut portrays Paul, who is Jordan’s boyfriend and a veteran police officer who gets mixed into the case as well. Together they work to bring that kidnapper to some kind of justice.

White Collar holds a very dear place in my heart. It’s the show about which I first wrote for AfterEllen. So I love it in a perfect, first love, kind of way. That will probably never change but it doesn’t mean I don’t think they should use Agent Diana Berrigan a whole lot more. Because she hasn’t been featured heavily in the three episodes so far, I’m lumping them together to get you caught up on the show.

Billie Holiday would have celebrated 96 today. Her melodic voice can be heard on a lengthy list of film soundtracks including Schinder’s List, Slaves Of New York, Harlem Nights, Watchmen, Angela’s Ashes, The Green Mile, August Rush, The West Wing , The Notebook , Sex In The City and Capote. The films she acted in are The Emperor Jones and New Orleans.
Actor and comedian Bill Bellamy turns 46 today. He started his career as a stand-up comic and parlayed that into a hosting gig at MTV Jams. Love Jones and How To Be A Player are probably his most memorable films. He’s also appeared in Any Given Sunday, The Brothers, Royal Pains, Lottery Ticket and was the voice of Skeeter on Cousin Skeeter.
