Fritz Wepper, the German actor who portrayed the German Jew Fritz Wendel in Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning musical masterpiece Cabaret and starred in his home country on the TV series Derrick and For Heaven’s Sake, has died. He was 82.
Wepper died Monday in a Munich hospice after a long illness that followed the life-threatening sepsis he suffered last year, his family announced.
An actor since childhood, Wepper landed the biggest international role of his career in Cabaret (1972), where he appeared alongside Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem and Joel Grey. As Wendel, he passed as a Protestant and fell in love with wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson).
After the film’s success — it raked in eight Oscars in 1973 — Wepper turned down Hollywood offers and instead took a sidekick role as Harry Klein on the new German crime series Derrick, playing alongside Horst Tappert‘s titular homicide detective, a...

Back in December 2023, Netflix swooped in and acquired season two of the critically acclaimed Australian drama The Tourist after Max passed on picking up the distribution rights after airing the first season. Season one of the riveting drama followed Jamie Dornan (Belfast) as a man with a sketchy past who suffered from amnesia as the result of a car accident that was meant to kill him. And season two, which premieres on February 29, 2024, finds Dornan reprising his role as Elliot alongside Danielle Macdonald as Helen, the only person he could depend on when he couldn’t remember his own name.
Their relationship grew over the course of the first season, and by the finale, they were more than just friends. Now, in season two, Elliot and Helen will be traveling to Ireland, hoping to find answers about Elliot’s identity. “But instead, they are forced to face the dangerous consequences of his past actions,...

David Mitchell is returning to the BBC for genre-bending detective comedy Ludwig, which features on a five-strong comedy slate alongside Hulu co-production Dinosaur and a show from The Duchess star Michelle de Swarte.
Unveiling his first major comedy slate at this afternoon’s BBC Comedy Festival in Cardiff, the corporation’s Comedy Director Jon Petrie said the shows reflect “the depth and range of our offerings which champion British creativity.”
The slate is led by Ludwig, Peep Show star Mitchell’s first BBC project since Upstart Crow, which follows the eponymous protagonist as he takes on the identity of his brother, Dci James Taylor, who has disappeared off the face of the earth. Mitchell’s Ludwig lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living under his nom-de-plume, and he struggles to adapt to being a twin who happens to be a successful Dci leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team.

This Attack on Titan review contains spoilers.
Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 20
“Before I save the world, I want to save you.”
Last week’s “Two Brothers” is easily one of the strongest episodes of Attack on Titan that’s ever been produced, which puts a lot of pressure on whatever follows. Another action-heavy installment would be the wrong approach after this chaotic high, so the more muted and reflective structure that’s adopted in “Memories of the Future” functions as the perfect cool down period after watching Eren’s head get blown off.
“Memories of the Future” is a very patient episode and it’s almost entirely spent in the past, or the nebulous timeless space that is “Paths.” This culminates in a huge twist regarding the Jaegers as Attack on Titan delivers its swan song on this tortured family. Eren and Zeke wrestle with their pasts, which turns...

Bahman Ghobadi, the Kurdish-Iranian director whose “The Four Walls” has its world premiere this week at the Tokyo International Film Festival, wants people to watch his film on a big screen.
“If you watch it on a computer you might think that ‘The Four Walls’ is about a building,” he says. “But watching in the cinema you will be able to understand that it is a metaphor, to feel the different forces pressing in.”
The story, loosely based on Ghobadi’s own experiences, involves a man who works for years to buy a small home with a sea view and to have his family move in with him. But, when he returns after a period of enforced absence, he finds that a developer is building a new property that will block his cherished vista. The man’s fight to reclaim what he has lost is humorous, tragic and enraging.

The team behind hit drama series “The Missing” have expanded the universe, and Tcheky Karyo’s Julien Baptise is back in action. This time the French detective is helping a man (Tom Hollander) find his niece, a sex worker who has disappeared in Amsterdam. As with the earlier show, BAFTA-winning writers Harry Williams and Jack Williams created the series through their Two Brothers shingle. Ahead of launching on the BBC and being screened at the Drama Days event in Berlin, it has already sold widely and is set to light up schedules in 2019. Two Brothers’ head of drama and series executive producer Chris Aird lifts the lid on “Baptiste.”
How did a show using Tcheky Karyo’s Baptiste character come about?
Jack and Harry had a really clear sense that they wanted to expand the universe of ‘The Missing,’ that there was a lot left in that world they created.

Europe’s mainstay fest for cinematography, newly rechristened EnergaCamerimage, launched its 26th edition and a week of 241 film screenings in the Polish town of Bydgoszcz on Saturday with a guest appearance by Roman Polanski.
The controversial but seminal director of classics such as “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Chinatown” took the stage to honor a longtime colleague, cinematographer Witold Sobocinski, with a lifetime achievement award for his luminous lensing. The pair, who shared stories from film school in Poland under the former communist regime, worked together in 1988 on “Frantic,” the Paris-set thriller starring Emmanuelle Seigner, now Polanski’s wife.
The master lenser also filmed “The Wedding” and the Oscar-nommed “The Promised Land,” both directed by Andrzej Wajda.
Fest director Marek Zydowicz credited Sobocinski with influencing a generation of cinematographers, noting he continues to teach at the Lodz film school that has set dozens of future directors and camera people on their professional paths.

As is annual tradition, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced this year’s 25 film set to join the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Selected for their “cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance,” the films picked range from such beloved actioners as “Die Hard,” childhood classic “The Goonies,” the seminal “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and the mind-bending “Memento,” with plenty of other genres and styles represented among the list.
The additions span 1905 to 2000, and includes Hollywood blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animation, shorts, independent, and even home movies. The 2017 selections bring the number of films in the registry to 725.

Before Bansky, there was Richard Hambleton. In the ’80s, Hambleton’s “spooky” silhouette paintings —which looked like someone’s shadow and which he drew late at night— appeared on the sides of Manhattan buildings. Regarded as a genius of his time, as his work was on the rise in both demand and value. Hambleton fell victim to drug addiction and became homeless. Twenty years later, the artist is rediscovered and presented with the opportunity to redeem himself.

Is it possible for an actor to win two Emmys for one TV show?
In Season 3 of FX’s Fargo — premiering Wednesday, April 19 at 10/9c — Ewan McGregor is attempting maybe the most difficult acting feat of his career: playing the dual lead roles of feuding Minnesota brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy. For him, that meant 18-hour shooting days and hours upon hours of makeup and costume changes… not to mention all that dialogue. “That means two roles to learn. And they can be quite wordy, the scenes,” McGregor says with a laugh. “I’ve really had my work cut out for me.

Bobby Farrelly has spent a quarter century in comedy, and the co-director of films like “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary” says the world’s sense of humor has become increasingly touchy.
“People are very thin-skinned about a lot of subjects,” he said, speaking at Idaho’s Sun Valley Film Festival, held March 15-19. “You can’t even joke about them. These aren’t the days of Lenny Bruce, when you could try a bunch of different things and break rules. Now, people are sensitive. But I think it’ll change. It’s a cyclical thing. Someone will come along who’s doing it differently, a modern-day Joan Rivers who can make people laugh about being sensitive.”

Two brothers make a pitstop in a town teeming with cannibals in Chris von Hoffmann's Drifter, and for our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Hoffmann to discuss the making of his feature film debut.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Chris. How and when did you first come up with the idea for Drifter?
Chris von Hoffmann: I actually thought of the concept back when I was 16. It was just one of several script ideas I started putting together on paper but never saw it all the way through because of my attention span back then. However, I had the title, had written the opening scene and had the overall structure down, but it was slightly different. I haven't caught all the way up with Rick and Morty yet myself, but there's a clip from the episode "Rixty Minutes" in which the two title characters watch TV in another dimension and comment about how TV there feels more improvisational than it does in their dimension. One of the commercials they watch is a trailer for a fictional movie called Two Brothers, and the YouTube channel Just Editing Stuff has recreated that trailer primarily using live action footage from Michael Bay's Bad Boys. Shout out to them, because it's pretty freakin' spot-on. Take a look, and then watch the original clip below.

The first teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action feature film adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa’s manga and anime Full Metal Alchemist has been released. The trailer shows off a series of brief but great looking and exciting clips, and we get to see Ryōsuke Yamada in full costume as the alchemist Edward Elric, as well as his little brother Al, who is a CG animated character.
In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and his leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Equipped with mechanical “auto-mail” limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his and his brother's bodies...the legendary Philosopher's Stone.
When talking about this film adaptation and its faithfulness to the original source material, director Fumihiko Sori (Ping Pong) said:
"I want to create a style that follows the original manga as much as possible.

Two brothers, one VHS board game, and a quest to find their presumably dead father highlight the intriguing trailer and poster for Beyond the Gates, Jackson Stewart's new horror adventure film that co-stars Barbara Crampton.
Synopsis: "A retro-cool blast from the day-glo 1980s past, Beyond the Gates zaps viewers back to a time when VHS ruled, video stores were meccas for horror fans, and shocks came with a healthy dose of schlock. In the wake of their father’s mysterious disappearance, two estranged brothers—responsible Gordon (Graham Skipper of Almost Human) and reckless John (Chase Williamson of John Dies At The End)—reunite to sift through the contents of his stubbornly anachronistic VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive Vcr board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished. Intrigued, the boys pop in the tape, press play, and soon discover that, far from an ordinary game,...

The film is about two brothers who decide to fake a disappearance in the Alaskan wilderness so they'll have a great survival story to sell. However, things don't go exactly as planned and they end up in even more trouble than before. Jason Momoa stars with Cary Elwes, Melora Walters, Anna Hutchison, John Karna, Drew Roy, Haley Webb and Shane Coffey. This looks like a bit of a mess, with lots of drama among characters and not enough actual survival, though it's hard to judge from this trailer alone. I'm curious but honestly not expecting that much from this. Here's the first official trailer for Richard Gray's Sugar Mountain, direct from YouTube: Two brothers, down on their luck, fake...
