The situation is a creepy one
deickemeyer19 September 2017
The colonel, at the dinner table, tells a lively story of the manner in which the lieutenant rescued him from peril, all of which is nicely exhibited on the screen. The other diners then determine to test Mainhall's bravery in another way. A note is left on his table advising that he would be dead before midnight. This furnishes the basis of a psychological situation which is very well depicted indeed. You can see the gradual manner in which fear begins to clutch at this brave man and finally almost shatters his nerve, until he learns the facts about the note. The situation is a creepy one and will appeal to those who like plenty of chills up the back. - The Moving Picture World, July 5, 1913
