Christian Slater currently stars in Roku’s The Spiderwick Chronicles as Mulgarath, an extremely powerful ogre who can shape-shift into any form he wants, whether human or animal. The actor recently revealed that he had no idea about the creator’s inspiration behind the character, but it turned out to be something that he loved for years.

The Spiderwick Chronicles dropped on The Roku Channel on Friday and the reviews have been mixed, at best. The series, based on Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi’s novels of the same name, did not live up to the magic of the original source material. Critics generally found that the series tried telling a modernized version of the story but failed to execute the integral fantasy element. Some fans accuse the series of going too woke, without consideration for the myth and the magic.

Fans call it the Dei Harry Potter, as The Spiderwick Chronicles race-swaps the central sibling trio of Mallory, Jared, and Simon. These characters, originally White in the book, were played by Black actors Noah Cottrell, Lyon Daniels, and Mychala Lee respectively.

The book series was first adapted into movie format in 2008, when The Spiderwick Chronicles was released, receiving generally positive reviews but that was it at the time. The official trailer for Roku’s The Spiderwick Chronicles shows off much more of the series’ fantasy world and of Christian Slater as an ogre who would prefer a world without humans. The two-minute trailer also introduces the Grace family and how moving into the Spiderwick Estate opens up their eyes to the existence of mythical creatures.
In addition to Christian Slater as Mulgarath, season one stars Joy Bryant as Helen Grace, Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace, Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace, and Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace. Jack Dylan Grazer provides the voice of Thimbletack.
“The Grace family moves from Brooklyn, New York, to their ancestral home in Henson, Michigan, the Spiderwick Estate. Helen makes the move with her 15-year-old fraternal twin boys, Jared and Simon, and her older daughter, Mallory,” reads Roku’s synopsis. “Shortly after moving to the Spiderwick Estate Jared discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real!

Christian Slater’s Dr. Dorian Brauer aka the villainous ogre Mulgarath is positively “starving” for, well, humans in a first teaser trailer for The Spiderwick Chronicles, which will premiere all eight episodes Friday, April 19 on Roku.
Based on the series of children’s books by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black, The Spiderwick Chronicles “follows the coming-of-age story of the Grace Family as they move from New York to Michigan and into their family’s ancestral home,” according to the official logline. “Upon arrival, the family not only uncovers mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s Spiderwick Estate, but also discovers a secret,...

Netflix has landed rights to the female-driven genre thriller Apex, described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs, Deadline reports today.
Apex was penned by “The Purge” writer Jeremy Robbins and selected as part of 2021’s The Black List, an annual buzzy compendium of the year’s most-liked unproduced Hollywood screenplays.
The spec script logline for Apex: “When an adrenaline junkie sets out to conquer a menacing river, she discovers that nature isn’t the only thing out for blood.” In other words, one woman finds herself stalked by an Apex predator, only this time of the human variety. And it sounds like it’ll be very intense.
Deadline reports that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have created a need for original stories for studios’ development slates, which has led to a boost in spec and packaging markets. Before the strikes, “the market was not as robust...

Exclusive: While high-profile packages have been flourishing following the ends of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the spec market also looks to have some pop to it as sources tell Deadline that Netflix has landed the female-driven genre thriller Apex from scribe Jeremy Robbins. Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment will produce. Netflix declined comment.
The script is described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs and follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.
The sale comes at an interesting time in a post-strike landscape where studios see a need for new original stories to fill their development slates, and the spec and packaging markets have reaped the rewards. Prior to the WGA strike in May, the market was not as robust as reps cautioned their clients about how hard it is to sell a script with talent attached, let alone a spec on its own.

Medical drama The Good Doctor will end after the upcoming seventh series, it’s been revealed. Details here.
Freddie Highmore is one of a select few who was able to successfully go from fresh-faced child star, where he headlined Tim Burton’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, the underrated August Rush and The Spiderwick Chronicles, to a prolific acting career as an adult. The role that really put Highmore into the big leagues was playing Norman Bates, the younger version of Anthony Perkins’ character from Psycho, in five seasons of Bates Motel.
Immediately following the ending of the show, Highmore moved on to arguably his greatest performance as autistic surgical resident Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor. Based on a Korean show, writer David Shore developed and adapted it into the English language version, on which he acts as showrunner alongside Liz Friedman.

Exclusive: Hulu is not proceeding with its planned limited series about Sammy Davis Jr., starring Elijah Kelley as the Candy Man, from Lee Daniels and 20th Television.
I hear 20th Television will be shopping the project to other buyers and plans to attach additional high-level talent before taking it out as part of an aggressive effort to find a new home.
The studio recently was able to set another streaming series, The Spiderwick Chronicles (co-production with lead studio Paramount TV Studios), at Roku, following Disney+’s decision not to move forward with it.
The pickup reversals for both shows come amid a content spend cut across all divisions of Hulu and Disney+ parent Disney, which the company announced earlier this year. Additionally, all media companies have been reevaluating their streaming strategies by cutting programming costs with a renewed focus on profitability.

The new Muppets show is the latest in a string of cancellations at Disney+ as the streamer cuts back on original programming.
It’s a tough time to work in the TV and Film industry right now. With cancellations coming left right and centre, and still relatively few new shows announced after the conclusion of the writers and actors strikes, it looks like streamers might be looking at some of their existing programming and wondering how on earth it’s supposed to turn a profit.
The latest casualty of these tightening purse strings is The Muppets Mayhem, which won’t be renewed by Disney+ after its first season aired in May this year.
It follows Disney+ original shows National Treasure, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., Willow, Big Shot and Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, all of which have been axed this year. The Spiderwick Chronicles, an upcoming adaptation of the fantasy novels...

The Electric Mayhem Band is breaking up after Disney+ canceled its latest Muppets show.
The streamer has axed live-action series The Muppets Mayhem, which comes from The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, after one season.
The ten-part series was released in May but Disney+ never disclosed any ratings for the show.
The cancellation marks a blow for plans for a wider Muppetverse; Goldberg previously expressed interest in branching out using the classic IP, which includes some of Disney’s most recognizable characters.

After being cancelled by Disney+ earlier this year, Nautilus has found a new home at AMC.
The Captain Nemo origin series had already finished shooting, but Disney dropped the series nonetheless as a cost-cutting measure. As stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” Nautilus will air on AMC as well as AMC+ sometime next year.

The Spiderwick Chronicles has set a new streaming home!
The upcoming new television series adaptation, based on the popular books, was originally supposed to air on Disney+ as announced in November 2021, but was dropped from the streamer just a couple months ago.
Their reasoning has to do with the company’s cutting programming costs and reevaluating their content strategy across their streamer and even primetime/cable networks.
Good news though, the show has found a brand new home at The Roku Channel, after already completing filming on the series back in February 2023.

One streaming service's trash is another's treasure. To that end, Roku has announced that it has nabbed the rights to "The Spiderwick Chronicles" TV series, which had previously been in the works at Disney+. And when we say in the works, we mean that the entire eight-episode series had already been filmed. Yet, Disney decided not to release it anyhow, as we learned back in August. But the show will see the light of day after all.
The adaptation of the acclaimed book series by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black will now be a Roku Original series that will debut on The Roku Channel in early 2024. No specific release date has been announced yet but expect more information, including a trailer, sooner rather than later. It's easy to see why Disney would have pursued this in the first place as the YA fantasy adventure novels are quite popular, with 20 million copies sold.

Upon arrival, the family not only uncovers mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s Spiderwick Estate, but also discovers a secret, fantastical world around them.”
As previously announced, the cast includes: Joy Bryant as Helen Grace, Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace, Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace, Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace, Jack Dylan Grazer as the voice of Thimbletack, and Christian Slater as Mulgarath.

Roku just scored a completed, anticipated adaptation of a beloved book series that will air in early 2024. The streaming platform announced on Tuesday that it has acquired “The Spiderwick Chronicles” nearly two months after the show was dropped by Disney+ as part of a cost-saving measure.
Based on the book series of the same name by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black, “The Spiderwick Chronicles” follows the coming-of-age story of the Grace Family, as they move from New York to Michigan and into their family’s ancestral home. Upon arrival, the family not only uncovers mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s Spiderwick Estate, but also discovers a secret, fantastical world around them.
The eight-episode first season was produced by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television to initially stream on Disney+, but the streamer decided not to move forward with its plans after the first season was completed. And their loss is Roku’s gain.

It's always difficult hearing a show that's been completed isn't airing at its original home.
There was a lot of excitement about The Spiderwick Chronicles when Disney+ ordered the series.
You can only imagine our surprise when it emerged that the streaming service had scrapped the project after shooting an entire season.
The decision to nix the show came as Disney+, like many other streaming services, examined its content slate with the eye of cutting costs.
That led to several shows that had already premiered, including Willow, being banished from the service entirely.
While many projects haven't found new homes, we're happy to report that there is a future for The Spiderwick Chronicles.
Roku has stepped in to pick up the completed episodes to air in the U.S. at some point in 2024.
Deadline first reported the news.
