It’s fitting that Ron Howard’s documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” gets its name from the man himself. During an early bit of voiceover, we hear the “Sesame Street” and “Muppets” creator describe his take on just what it is he does: Idea man. Nothing more, nothing less.
As the film winds on, others are more lofty in their estimations. Henson was a “man with a purpose,” a superhuman, someone for whom terms like “incredibly productive” can’t do justice. He “wanted to do more than was humanly possible,” one of Henson’s adult children tells us. Howard’s film reminds us how true that was during Henson’s lifetime and into his continuing legacy.
Henson was a puppeteer and creator of everything from The Muppets to “Fraggle Rock,” an animator and actor, a TV genius (Henson’s fingerprints are still on every element of “Sesame Street”), and a filmmaker.

The story of the rivalry between F1 aces James Hunt and Niki Lauda is given a glossy big screen retelling in Ron Howard's film. Written by Peter Morgan, it's no surprise that the writer of Frost/Nixon and The Queen puts psychology to the fore and amps up the win-at-any-costs mentality of Lauda, in particular - something that led the driver to have a horrific accident. Howard's action on the racing circuit does the job but it's Lauda's battle back from the accident that really holds the interest and Daniel Bruhl, who can be a bit hit and miss in terms of performances, is on the top of his game as the driven Austrian. Chris Hemsworth puts in a solid supporting performance, although he mainly leans into the established playboy image of the English sportsman.

Sometimes it feels like Ron Howard has been around forever. The actor/director, who was born on March 1, 1954, has been a star in TV and movies for over 65 years. From his early days playing Andy Griffith‘s son Opie on “The Andy Griffith Show” to his directing of the latest “Star Wars” story, “Solo,” the unassuming Howard still finds himself the center of attention.
Now primarily known as a director, Howard has won two Academy Awards — for producing and directing 2001’s Best Picture winner “A Beautiful Mind” starring Russell Crowe — and has two more nominations to his credit for producing and directing 2008 nominee “Frost/Nixon” starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella.
Let’s take a photo gallery tour of his 17 greatest feature films, ranked from worst to best. Keep in mind that our gallery strictly focuses on his directing career and leaves out his terrific work as an actor in movies.

Try telling viewers of a certain age about the immense popularity of "The Andy Griffith Show" back in the day and you're likely to be met by blank stares, quite a number of follow-up questions, or both. Looking back, it may be surprising to realize that neither Andy Griffith nor the show itself garnered any major awards love throughout the eight seasons it was on the air, never resulted in much of any real merchandising profits during its run (which was a rarity at the time), and even met a somewhat ignominious end when Griffith was written out of the sitcom series and the entire production became rebranded as "Mayberry R.F.D."
In between those extremes, however, "The Andy Griffith Show" maintained its status as a consistent ratings juggernaut throughout each and every year and vaulted its cast to stardom. Buoyed by Griffith's "Aw shucks" small-town and square-jawed heroic appeal, an all-time classic opening theme song,...

Right on time, this week brings a companion documentary to one of summer’s biggest movies, directed by an acclaimed filmmaker whose pedigree makes him an immediate Oscar candidate — especially in a year that isn’t overflowing with breakout docs.
The contender to watch this week: “A Compassionate Spy”
On the heels of “Oppenheimer” comes a documentary about Ted Hall, an American physicist who gave the Soviet Union classified intelligence about the construction of the atomic bomb. “A Compassionate Spy” has deep pedigree in two-time Oscar-nominated director Steve James, who made “Hoop Dreams,” “Life Itself,” and “City So Real.” If the campaign gods are smart, they’ll put James and Christopher Nolan in a room together at some point, even though Hall isn’t depicted in “Oppenheimer.” “Spy” is now in theaters and on VOD.
Other contenders:

Angela Bassett didn’t quite do the thing and win the Academy Award this year, but she came mighty close. The iconic actress was nominated for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” for her powerful performance as Queen Ramonda, which was one of the star turns not only in the “Black Panther” sequel but in the entirety of the MCU. Bassett lost out to Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) but the fact that she was even nominated is something of a victory in and of itself. Her was the first acting bid the MCU has ever received — so Bassett is still very much a history-maker given the Oscars’ historically snobbish attitude towards superhero flicks.
But Bassett isn’t the only performer to wow audiences in an MCU movie — the franchise is actually littered with excellent performances that have been overlooked purely because they feature in superhero films. With that in mind,...

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we take a look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
It may seem impossible to fathom for many of us, but there are teenagers alive today who have never seen an Academy Awards where there were only five Best Picture nominees in a given year. The Academy decided on five nominees for the top category starting with the 17th ceremony back in 1945, and that number held all the way through to the 81st in 2009, where Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" emerged triumphant and won a total of eight awards.
Alongside the Best Picture winner, the final slate of five featured David Fincher's sole Best Picture nominee "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Ron Howard's stage-to-screen adaptation of "Frost/Nixon," Gus Van Sant's biopic "Milk," and Stephen Daldry's Nazi romance "The Reader.

Peter J. Devlin — who started his career as an audio assistant at the BBC and went on to work on big action movies including Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and smaller dramatic films such as Frost/Nixon — will accept the Cinema Audio Society’s Career Achievement Award. Devlin has worked on more than 70 films and received Oscar nominations for five of them, including Star Trek and Pearl Harbor. Last year, he became the first production sound mixer to be elected a governor of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
Regarding working on the Black Panther series, Devlin says it was important to be involved early on, with collaborators including costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who “spent so much time with me, weeks ahead of the project, to go through all the different costumes and devise a plan as to how to get those mics on those actors.”
He remembers Chadwick Boseman with respect and warmth.

Steven Spielberg is “encouraged” that two blockbusters have finally earned Oscars recognition for Best Picture, but he thinks it’s a milestone that should’ve been hit “years ago” by The Dark Knight.
On Tuesday (24 January), the Academy revealed the nominees for this year’s Oscar awards, with blockbuster hits Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water among the 10 films vying for the top prize.
Recent Golden Globe winner, Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, is also in the Best Picture category. Find the full list of Oscar nominees here.
Following the announcement of the nominees, the award-winning director spoke with Deadline about his feelings towards seeing Joseph Kosinski’s and James Cameron’s breakthrough hits on the list.

By amassing hundreds of film and TV credits over the past seven decades, James Hong has cemented himself as an indelible figure in the history of screen entertainment. Having just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last May, the 93-year-old is now reaping the benefits of taking on one of his most high-profile roles yet in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” His inclusion in the movie’s ensemble is expected to lead to his first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which would make him the oldest film performer ever recognized by the organization.
Hong appears in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” as Gong Gong, the irascible father of Michelle Yeoh’s lead character, Evelyn Wang. He, Yeoh, and Stephanie Hsu share a connection in that they have all voiced characters in the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise. While Matt Smith plays an alluring uncle in “House of the Dragon,” Prince Harry just calls the actor “granddad.” No, but actually.
Smith, who previously starred as Prince Philip in the first two seasons of Netflix’s “The Crown,” revealed that he met Prince Harry once years prior at a polo match. “I met Harry once, at polo, which sounds a bit grand, but it wasn’t that grand,” Smith said during “The Today Show” (via Insider) on September 15. “And he walked up to me and went, ‘Granddad.'”
Smith added that Prince Harry shook his hand.
“He watched the show!” Smith continued. “Well, I can’t claim to know if he watches it currently, but he watched a bit of it then.”

The teaser trailer for the esteemed director Sam Mendes’ new movie, Empire of Light, has been released. The director also serves as screenwriter and producer for this TIFF-bound awards contender. This period piece features an ensemble composed of Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, BAFTA winner Micheal Ward, Toby Jones, and Academy Award winner Colin Firth. The movie comes courtesy of Fox Searchlight Pictures.
The film is about the events that take place in an English seaside town in the early 1980s. The trailer features interlinked stories of the ensemble cast that culminates in the screening of a film. The movie explores the relationship between human connection and human interaction and how it all relates to the power of cinema. This is Sam Mendes’ poignant and powerful love letter to the medium he clearly loves so much.

While Frank Langella is said to be considering legal action after being fired from Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” for his “inappropriate” behavior, more details are emerging about what he is alleged to have said and done that made cast and crew so uncomfortable around him.
Deadline reported on Friday that, according to “a number of people on or close to the Netflix production,” the Tony winner often indulged in graphic discussions about his own sex life and quizzed people on set about theirs.
One production source said, “He spoke graphically about his own sexual history to many people even as they were trying to get out of those conversations,” and another added, “He asked cast members about their sexual experiences.”
“There was a general sense of toxicity that followed him around. A lot of the cast and crew were very uncomfortable around Frank from the beginning,...

Ron Howard’s first animated feature, The Shrinking Of Treehorn, has been acquired by Netflix, Deadline can confirm.
The upcoming film, described as a musical set in New York City during the holidays, is based on Florence Parry Heide’s 1971 children’s book of the same, which was illustrated by Edward Gorey. The story centers on Treehorn, a young boy who starts shrinking one day, even if his parents barely seem to notice.
Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit) adapted the script for the project, which was first set up at Paramount back in 2019. Howard’s Imagine Entertainment is producing alongside Australia’s Animal Logic.
Howard is the two-time Oscar winner behind films including Frost/Nixon and A Beautiful Mind. Also coming soon from the filmmaker is Thirteen Lives, the Thai rescue mission pic he directed for United Artists Releasing, which stars Colin Farrell, Viggo Mortensen, Joel Edgerton and more.

I can’t tell you if the joke was funny or not — I didn’t hear it. I can’t tell you if there were shocked gasps on the set when Frank Langella told it — I wasn’t there. But I can tell you that the punchline was a real doozy.
It went something like this: “You’re fired.”
But more on what happened last month during the filming of Netflix’s adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Fall of the House of Usher” a bit later. How Langella’s behavior on the set — not just telling that bawdy zinger but also touching an actress’ leg during the filming of a love scene — led to the 84-year-old Oscar-nominated actor getting canned from the series. And how he’s fighting back in the press, posting an open letter defending his actions, positioning himself as “collateral damage,” a victim of “cancel culture” run amok in Hollywood.

“Ticket to Paradise,” a forthcoming romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney is exactly the type of movie people always talk about missing. The cross-generational, Bali-set romp is for grown-ups, it isn’t based on anything, and its budget at least could be small.
In an effort to get audiences to recognize just how big a deal this thing is, Roberts is banging the drum well in advance of its late October (New York Film Festival?) release. Speaking with The New York Times to promote her new Starz series “Gaslit,” she said that she hasn’t been avoiding rom-coms for 20 years, it’s just that there haven’t been any offers.
“If I had read something that I thought was that ‘Notting Hill’ level of writing or ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ level of madcap fun, I would do it,” she said. “Ticket To Paradise,” written and directed by Ol Parker,...

Veteran actor Frank Langella has been fired from Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” following a Netflix investigation that found Langella acted inappropriately on set, a source close to the production confirmed to TheWrap on Wednesday evening.
Netflix had no comment on the situation and a rep for Flanagan did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
TMZ reported on Tuesday that Netflix was looking into allegations that the 84-year-old had been accused of sexual harassment, including making inappropriate comments to a female co-star on the set of the limited series.
Langella was halfway through his portrayal of mad patriarch Roderick Usher. According to Deadline, the part will be recast. The role of the decadent aristocrat was most famously played by Vincent Price in Roger Corman’s 1960 horror film.

Ron Howard is a curious director. For all the Oscar love he got for films like "A Beautiful Mind," "Cinderella Man," and "Frost/Nixon," I don't see them as his best work. His sci-fi and fantasy movies tend to resonate with me far more than most of his awards-friendly true-story dramas, save for "Apollo 13" and "Rush." Even then, "Apollo 13" really hits its stride when it evolves into a thriller about NASA's capable technicians scrambling to deal with the fallout of the infamous failed lunar mission. Similarly, "Rush" is at its most engaging when it's focusing on...

One year ago, “Schitt’s Creek” became the second TV series for which two men simultaneously received Screen Actors Guild award bids for playing father and son. As Johnny and David Rose, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy followed the example set by “Everybody Loves Raymond” pair Peter Boyle and Ray Romano in 2002. Until this year, these were the only such cases in SAG Awards history. Now, “Succession” star Brian Cox and his TV sons Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong have broken new ground as the first ones to achieve this feat on the drama side. After winning an Emmy against Cox in 2020, Strong is now challenged with defending his honor by earning the esteem of his acting peers.
Aside from his two costars, Strong faces Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) in this year’s drama actor category. Both Culkin and Lee are SAG Award newcomers, while...

In the 28-year history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, there have been two instances of costar trios being nominated against each other in the drama actress category. Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco and Nancy Marchand (“The Sopranos”) set that precedent in 2000 and were followed just last year by Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin (“The Crown”). Until this year, there were no cases on the male side, but now, “Succession” stars Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong constitute the first. Of the three, Culkin is the only SAG Award newcomer, and that freshman status may help him stand out to voters.
In addition to his two cast mates, Culkin’s challengers in the drama actor race include Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”). All are new to the category except for Crudup, who was nominated here for the same role in 2020. He and Strong...

At the 13th Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in 2007, Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”) made history as the first Black winner in the supporting actress category. In the time since, five of the 11 other Black women who have vied for the same award have succeeded. In the 125 years since the first play based on the life of 17th century author Cyrano de Bergerac premiered, the classic underdog tale’s eternal relevance has been proven time and time again. Its simple love triangle premise has served as the basis for many stage and screen adaptations, two of which captured the attention of Oscar voters. José Ferrer and Gérard Depardieu both earned academy recognition for their portrayals of de Bergerac, and now Peter Dinklage is gunning for a Best Actor bid for starring in the new film “Cyrano.” If he succeeds, the character will become one of only a handful in Oscars history to have inspired three nominations.

Yes, I hated “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” It’s a movie that I’m a total annoying curmudgeonly naysayer about. So even though my antipathy isn’t the topic of this column, why hide it? Go ahead, throw tomatoes at me. But understand that I’m actually on your side.
I hated the film for two reasons. The way the multiverse concept plays out is, in my opinion, a half-baked and unsatisfying mess. “No Way Home” has none of the head-spinning flair and three-dimensional-chess logic that was so hypnotic in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” the bedazzling 2018 animated landmark that is one of the all-time highlights of the superhero genre. That movie was no small influence on this one, but it’s like seeing filet mignon turned into processed, additive-filled hamburger. That said, the only reason “No Way Home” even bothered with the multiverse concept is that it’s the only...

Michael Sheen announced in an interview with The Big Issue (via BBC) that he has “essentially turned myself into a social enterprise, a not-for-profit actor.” What this means is that Sheen will take the majority of his pay from various film, television, and stage projects and funnel it into community-driven projects. As an example, the “Frost/Nixon” and “Masters of Sex” actor recently put forward around $66,000 to fund a scholarship that helps Welsh students attend Oxford University. Sheen also sold two homes to help fund the Homeless World Cup after funding for the $2 million project fell through.

At the Middleburg Film Festival this month, there were two rapturous standing ovations in the main theater of the Salamander Resort, where all the prominent films screen. One was for the best picture front-runner “Belfast” from Focus Features. The other was for Clifton Collins Jr.’s heartfelt turn as an aging equestrian hoping for his final championship run in “Jockey” from Sony Pictures Classics.
With more than 70 movie credits, the Los Angeles-born actor has been a staple at the movies for two decades. From his imprisoned corporal in “The Last Castle” (2001) to his Oscar-snubbed role as convicted murderer Perry Smith in Bennett Miller’s best picture-nominated debut, “Capote” (2005), opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman, Collins has been a true character actor, with no awards recognition to come his way.
“Jockey” debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, which was virtual due to the pandemic. But movies often play differently in theaters.

STX Films has named Nasim Cambron executive vice president of publicity, Adam Fogelson, chairman of STX films motion picture group, announced Thursday.
Cambron rejoins STX Films to oversee all feature film publicity for the studio, after a stint as publicity manager in Netflix’s feature film division. In her new role, Cambron will coordinate communication efforts across all of STX’s internal divisions, including the digital marketing, creative, media, home entertainment and distribution departments. Cambron will report to Keri Moore, STX Films’ president of marketing.
“This is a homecoming for us and for Nasim,” Fogelson said. “She is an exceptional publicity leader and the right choice to lead our film PR team. Having worked with her for years, we have seen firsthand the kinds of results she has generated on behalf of our films and filmmakers, and we know the best is yet to come. We are thrilled to have her back.

While “Nomadland” has been crushing it most of this awards season, it will largely be sitting out of the upcoming SAG Awards. Its only representation is for previous two-time Best Female Actor champion Frances McDormand who isn’t seen as a serious threat to prevail again. (Though the most respected McDormand is always a possibility.)
That leaves the SAG ensemble contest wide open. “Da 5 Bloods,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night in Miami” all missed Oscar nominations for Best Picture, and not since 1996’s “The Birdcage” has a cast flown away with the SAG prize without a corresponding Oscar nom. That leaves two ducks remaining: “Minari” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” While “Minari” is a sweet film with a wonderful team of actors, don’t expect it to follow in the footsteps of last year’s surprise winner, “Parasite.”
Here are five reasons why “The Trial of the Chicago 7...

When Netflix suggested I might like to preside over a conversation between Sophia Loren and Frank Langella, two titans of the screen and stage, it felt churlish to turn the opportunity down. They both appear in films handled by the streamer this year; Loren makes her return to screens after more than a decade away in The Life Ahead, directed by her son Edoardo Ponti, and Frank Langella delivers a blistering turn as Judge Julius Hoffman in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7.
And what to say about two of the most accomplished actors of their generation that hasn’t been better spoken by the many decades of extraordinary work both of them have authored?
Frank Langella, of course, made his name in the theater, where he has won no fewer than four Tony Awards for performances in plays by Peter Morgan, Florian Zeller, Edward Albee and Ivan Turgenev.

Frank Langella is Stanislavsky over Strasberg (“Lee took Stanislavsky and bastardized him terribly”), acting over stardom (“I play my strong suit and try to disappear”), and old over young. “I’d hate to be a young actor starting out now,” said the 83-year-old performer; he was 32 when he earned his first film credit, in “Diary of a Mad Housewife,” which earned him a 1971 Golden Globe nomination as Most Promising Newcomer-Male. “I’ve seen people write about a new young actor who is only 24 being thrown on the junk heap.”
Langella is also theater over film, usually, but he was delighted to make the exception for Aaron Sorkin, whom he compares to Shakespeare. “All the classics I’ve done, I’m safe inside these brilliant writers,” he said. “There are not many today. With Aaron, you never feel you’re being abandoned: ‘How do I play this?’ Aaron has a delicious chocolate cake,...
