It took a long time, but mainstream cartoons are finally coming out of the closet. Now, we can only hope they stay that way.
When live-action television began making inroads for gay representation during the turn of the century, animation remained a frustratingly straight (if frequently queer-coded) affair. The reasons behind the medium’s slowness were obvious and, predictably, homophobic. Animation is too often seen as content made for kids, and same-sex attraction is regarded as an “adult” topic. So, pearl-clutching TV critics would argue, children shouldn’t be exposed to “adult” (read: gay) characters through raunchy cartoons.
That’s not to say that there weren’t LGBTQ people in cartoons before the 2010s; Japanese anime, in particular, was slightly ahead of the curve on this front, with ’90s classics like “Sailor Moon” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion” featuring explicitly queer themes and love stories. But that content was often mercilessly...

This week's big streaming releases include the return of "Sweet Tooth," a rare post-apocalyptic tale that's all about optimism (and cute critters), and the premiere of "Citadel," the second-most-expensive TV show ever made and the hopeful start of a global franchise. Elsewhere, if you want more apocalyptic fun with big smiles and dark undertones, there's "Ranking of Kings" and "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts." Or perhaps you want something before the apocalypse but with dark forces starting to gather, like the criminally underseen "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." For something completely different, "Person of Interest" is a spy thriller with some rather prescient thoughts about AI, "Source Code" is a fun sci-fi time loop thriller, "Spies in Disguise," is a hilarious take on the "James Bond" formula, and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" stares at the end of the world and chooses kindness.

These past few years have been tremendously busy for rapidly rising composer Daniel Rojas.
Between Netflix's "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts" and the Hulu/Marvel one-two punch of "M.O.D.O.K." and "Hit-Monkey," Rojas has made the transition from commercials and short films to major feature films and name-brand shows look impossibly easy.

Dan Stevens has been cast in the Starz series “Gaslit,” which will tell the story of the Watergate scandal, Variety has learned from sources.
Stevens joins previously announced cast members Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. Roberts will star as Martha Mitchell, the protagonist and the celebrity Arkansan socialite who was one of the first to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate in spite of her affiliation to the president via her husband, Attorney General John Mitchell, who will be played by Penn.
Stevens will star as John Dean. Described as a hotshot upstart, Dean is the young White House Counsel torn between his ambition and his struggle with whether he can lie to protect the President. Armie Hammer had previously been cast as Dean, but it was announced he was no longer involved with the project when it was picked up to series in February.
Starz declined to comment.

Photo: 'Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts'/Netflix In the vein of beloved animated series like 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and 'Steven Universe', Netflix’s 'Kipo' is the next innovative adventure saga to steal the hearts of fans of all ages. Modern times have become more and more reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic horror movie as 2020 trudges its way to a close. With the coronavirus pandemic raging, climate change intensifying, and a harsh divide in political ideology, the world today simply does not feel as welcoming and advantageous as it once did. The prospect of the end of the world is alarming to most, but to Kipo it’s only the beginning of a new adventure. In January of 2020, DreamWorks and Netflix released the first chapter of their collaborative series, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts which has just culminated in the final third chapter that released this past October.

The following contains spoilers for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3.
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts has finished its three season run… and we want more. While 30 episodes was a solid amount of time to tell its stories we can’t help but wish we had more time in Kipo’s world. We want to see more of the characters, more of the various Mutes, more of everything! Below we’ve listed just some of the movies, sequels, or even prequels we’d love to see made. DreamWorks, if you’re listening, make these happen!
Wolf Spin-off Movie
This idea is one of the closest to being possible; since creator Rad Sechrist has teased it on twitter and in an interview we did around the release of Kipo season 2. Specifically the show would follow a fifteen year-old Wolf (so this would be set after the timeskip.) Sechrist describes this possible film as,...

The following contains spoilers for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3.
And so Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts has sadly come to an end with its third season. While it’s a shame that we’ve only had less than a year filled with new Kipo episodes at the least got a satisfying ending. The main conflict was resolved, Kipo and friends are onto new adventures, and Hmufa is going strong. Still, we have a few lingering questions after the finale that we dug into to make sure everything was clear.
What happened to Emilia?
Despite Kipo’s repeated attempts to offer Emilia her hand in friendship she rejected it at every turn. Even after she was cured from her Mega form she still tried to kill Kipo. Mandu had to leap in to save the day. This bite from Mandu made Emilia lose her balance and fall...

This Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts review contains no spoilers.
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is one of the most hopeful, cheerful, friend-centric post-apocalyptic stories on television. While the stakes are higher in season three, and the team of characters experiences some losses and set-backs, the sheer amount of faith in a better future packed into these 10 episodes is exactly the kind of story viewers need in the world amidst pandemic and political turmoil.
The conceit behind the series is that 200 years ago, an apocalypse happened that created Mutes, intelligent, giant humanoid animals, who dominated the surface, pushing humans underground. Since then, some groups of humans have been trying to “cure” Mutes, restoring them to their normal, animal-level forms and intelligences, so that humans can once again live on and rule the surface world.

Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.

To show this off they, helped by a performance by none other than rapper Gza as the wolf Bad Billions, start to rap “a brief presentation on absolutely everything we’ve learned about the known universe.” The lyrics include such knowledge drops as,
Protons,
Neutrons,
folding together like a futon
Colliding in poem like a perfect storm,
creating galaxies and planets
Like the one that we’re on!
We’re talking ’bout Earth, ya’ll.
It’s truly the kind of music you wouldn’t hear on any other show and Kipo does not limit itself by any one genre. It’s also carefully woven into the story,...

In 2020, Netflix is almost a utility as much as an entertainment service. Many of us have spent months inside in lockdown staring at our televisions, being at least thankful that the fountain of content they provide never seems to run dry. But despite the massive subscriber numbers, there are some things that fall through the cracks. Now, What’s On Netflix has identified some of the best stuff you might not’ve seen, and I’ve got to admit, they’ve got good taste.
First up is Giri/Haji, a Netflix/BBC co-production about a detective from Tokyo searching for his missing brother in the UK. The first season has a solid 100% rating on the Tomatometer (and a 93% audience rating), with critics describing it as fascinating, adventurous and incredibly smart. There are just eight episodes in the first season and it sounds like a wild ride. I hadn’t actually heard of this until now,...

The following contains spoilers for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 2.
In the first season of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Scarlemagne, a mutated mandril who, like a number of animals within this world, now speaks English and walks on two feet, is introduced wearing British-revolutionary-era clothing. It’s a unique, strange, and seemingly random detail to introduce the show’s first key villain like that. Initially, it seems as though this is just his gimmick, the specific “theme” that the bad guy attached himself to, part of his crazed aspirations so tied to his imaginations. But it isn’t until the second season of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts that the purpose behind the clothing becomes clear. The show uses Scarlemagne’s attire to pinpoint a powerful and prevalent theme throughout its run, relating to race, and the history, iconography, and visuals of how race is depicted and affected.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts Season 2 just hit Netflix last week. Our friends at Gizmodo break down what they like and dislike.
“Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is one of those word-of-mouth shows that started small and grew into a tidal wave. The post-apocalyptic story of a half-jaguar girl and her friends roaming a brightly colored wasteland continues with season two, which wonderful expands its world while making a few sophomore missteps.”
Read more at Gizmodo.
Season 2 of Netflix’s hit series The Witcher will have less timeline confusion, according to the showrunner.
“The Witcher was a massive success, and while production was stalled because of Covid-19, that doesn’t mean that work isn’t still being done. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich shared some information about season 2 of The Witcher with The Wrap, discussing what would be different going into this new season. For those that hated them,...

Netflix continues to enjoy a busy summer, whether by expanding its library of titles or setting up new original series and returning seasons of shows. At times, it can be hard to round up the best new content on Netflix in any given month, especially given the speed by which the streaming giant adds it. However, Collider have reviewed the offerings for June and have identified nine of the best shows to enjoy.
One of Collider’s picks is Hannibal, with the Bryan Fuller series having quickly built up an audience on Netflix this month, especially now that all three seasons of the show are available. Of course, longtime fans won’t be surprised that people are loving the dark and twisted drama, which puts a new spin on the familiar cast of characters and plots from Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter series and the movies set within the same universe.

Netflix can always be relied upon for a large and varied quantity of anime to choose from, and several new titles have just been made available on the streaming service.
Based on a series of children’s novels, Okko’s Inn follows the eponymous young girl whose parents are killed in a car accident and is sent to live with her grandmother who runs a traditional Japanese inn. Soon after her arrival she begins seeing ghosts who encourage her in her work, and she starts to take enjoyment in making other people happy.
Elsewhere, One Piece is a ludicrously long-running series set in a world whose oceans are ruled by pirates. The story follows Luffy, a boy who after eating a special fruit gains superhuman strength and agility and a body with the malleability of rubber, and after gathering together a crew embarks upon a seafaring journey in search of the mythical titular treasure,...

This Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts season 2 review contains no spoilers.
When it comes to dealing with a post-apocalypse, the best stories are the ones that deal heavily in hope: hope for a better future, hope for happiness, and—occasionally—sheer moments of joy found amid the mess. One of the things I loved about Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 1 is that it so perfectly balances the idea of things being an absolute chaotic mess and acknowledging that inside that chaos lies a path toward a brighter, more beautiful future. The second season doubles down on that message, and Kipo continues to be the focal point around which the possibilities of that new future form.
The conceit of Kipo is that 200 years earlier (heavily indicated to be the year 2020), an apocalyptic event sent humans scurrying to cities underground, called Burrows, while the animals on the surface mutated into humanoid,...

As the summer begins to roll in it’s a time of endings for Netflix. No, Netflix isn’t going anywhere anytime soon obviously. The streamer continues to claim that its set up to churn out content through the rest of the year despite the coronavirus pandemic freeze on TV and movie production. If you’ve been on a Netflix binge-watching streak amid the novel coronavirus pandemic and are starting to feel worried about running out of things to stream, you’ll be glad to get a first look at the amazing line-up of TV shows and movies that the company is set to add to its library in June.
As if Netflix wasn’t already popular enough, they’ve stood to gain a lot of profit from the current outbreak of the Covid-19. With hundreds of millions of people around the globe self-isolating at home, it only makes sense that they’ve turned to streaming platforms to alleviate their boredom. Over the last couple of years, the likes of Amazon Prime, Hulu and HBO Now have upped the ante to seriously compete with Netflix, but if it’s variety you seek, then it’ll be quite a while before another service manages to dethrone the juggernaut.
