With the unofficial beginning of summer — Memorial Day — come and gone, the season has entered full swing. Several of the summer weekends will be crowded at the box office with sometimes three releases competing on similar dates. With action films like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters taking us through July, some animated adventures like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 will provide fun for whole families.
Deadpool 3 will cap off July with a new Marvel installment from Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, making way for more sinister films ahead of fall like M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Alien: Romulus. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice deserves an honorable mention although it won’t hit theaters until September to lead into spooky season and October.

When Adam Wingard said he would not return for the follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, fans of Legendary‘s latest clash of the titans fell into despair. Wingard brought something special to Godzilla and Kong’s latest city-destroying brawl, and we hoped he’d remain a part of the franchise. Thankfully, Grant Sputore, the director of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, is stepping up to the plate.
The follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire should continue the story from Wingard’s latest blockbuster, focusing on Kong and Godzilla’s tag team antics alongside several Titans waiting in the wings. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham will pen the script.
While Sputore is in, Wingard is moving on to direct Onslaught for A24. Wingard directed 2022’s Godzilla vs. Kong and this year’s Godzilla x Kong: New Empire.

As summer kicks off with the much-anticipated blockbuster season, it seems the industry might be in for a rough ride. This year has witnessed a less than stellar start, highlighted by the underwhelming performance of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. For a film residing in a universe as iconic as Mad Max, the numbers have certainly been disappointing. Struggles at the Box Office During the US Memorial Day holiday, Furiosa managed to top the box office but with an underwhelming $32 million over the four-day period. In stark contrast, The Little Mermaid garnered $118 million during the same weekend last...

George Miller, renowned for bringing the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max: Fury Road to life, is back with Furiosa. This prequel explores the origins of Imperator Furiosa, famously portrayed by Charlize Theron. In the new film, Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the role, a decision rooted in Miller’s choice to avoid de-aging technology. Chris Hemsworth plays the warlord in the upcoming Furiosa film. While fans eagerly anticipate Taylor-Joy’s performance, many are excited about a rumored Mad Max cameo. This brief appearance by Max Rockatansky heightens expectations for those hoping to see Tom Hardy reprising his role. Nonetheless, Furiosa stands strong as...

It’s a sad day for moviegoers living in Texas and Minnesota as Alamo Drafthouse closes its doors in six locations after the franchise filed for bankruptcy. The closures include five locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and a Minnesota theater in Woodbury. The closures are already in effect, with termination of employment contracts to follow immediately. A message to employees is circulating online mentioning the company losing $1 million in 2023. The reality is that Alamo Drafthouse has been fighting an uphill battle since the pandemic. People go to the theater less than they used to, not even for quality cinema experiences like The Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Beyond the pandemic, Alamo Drafthouse suffered a tremendous loss during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, when new films were slow to open and streaming services pumped out movies like they were going out of style. Many people became comfortable...

There is a new Hunger Games movie in the works, and this time it will be a prequel about Haymitch Abernathy, the District 12 tribute and champion played by Woody Harrelson in the original cycle of films in the 2010s. The news came simultaneously Thursday with the announcement of the book upon which the film will be based: Suzanne Collins’ forthcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
According to the press release, the new Young Adult novel and film will follow the events of the 50th Hunger Games, aka the Second Quarter Quell, when Haymitch became an unwilling tribute as a teenager. Presumably the experiences he endured both in the arena and the Capitol will turn him into the bitter middle-aged drunkard who Katniss Everdeen meets and redeems over the course of the original The Hunger Games story, which is set 24 years after the events of Sunrise on the Reaping.

Six Alamo Drafthouse franchised locations are closing abruptly after their owner filed for bankruptcy.
The venues include five Texas locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as a Minnesota venue in Woodbury. The theaters are operated by Two is One, One is None, LLC, which is filing for Chapter 7. The closure is effective immediately and staff has been informed that their employment has been terminated. In a message from the franchisee to employees that was circulating on social media, the owners said they lost “over $1 million” in 2023. The Texas theaters are located in Richardson, Las Colinas, Lake Highlands, Dallas, and Denton.
The closures come as the summer box office is suffering a steep decline, with major films such as “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” failing to connect with audiences. Hollywood has also struggled to release as many films theatrically, after enduring production shutdowns during Covid and the 2023 actors and writers strikes.

Any filmmaker worth their salt will acknowledge that the path to greatness comes from seeking inspiration from any source big or small, that could have a deep influence in their process of creating art. After several weeks of disappointing openings, Hollywood has its fingers crossed that the old-school star power of Will Smith returning to the Bad Boys franchise will give moviegoers a push to return to theaters. Indeed, the well-reviewed four-fuel has the benefit of opening hot on the heels of the franchise’s biggest entry to date, Bad Boys For Life, which made over $200 million domestically. It opened to a gargantuan $62 million, and while Bad Boys: Ride or Die seems unlikely to make that much money, it should still do decently.
I’m predicting an opening in the $40 million range, which would be an ok number for a franchise that, previously, was curiously light at the box office. Let’s remember that the first movie only actually made $65 million domestically, while the huge-budget sequel, Bad Boys 2, was considered something of a flop in 2003 when it made “only” $138 million, despite opening at...

Heading into Memorial Day weekend, it was already anticipated that the box office would witness its lowest totals since the turn of the century. The final numbers turned out to be even lower than expected. The No. 1 film for this weekend, “Furiosa,” made just $32 million over the four-day period, making it the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day release since 1995, when Casper opened to $22 million (before adjusting for inflation). This drop underscores a significant downturn in theatrical earnings. Box office analysis company Nash Information Systems had projected a $160 million 4-day total prior to the weekend, which...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Jacob Scipio, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Nuñez, Eric Dane, and Ioan Gruffud
Director: Adil and Bilall
Bad Boys: Ride or Die Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
What’s Good: Lawrence is back better than ever, and he basically steals the show for everyone else, and it is quite nice seeing him in the spotlight once more.
What’s Bad: Plotwise, the movie makes no sense, and it feels quite confusing at times.
Loo Break: As usual, the second act stretches more than it should, so you could go to the loo right there.
Watch or Not?: If you are in for a fun action movie, then this is a must, thanks to its impressive action and good humor.

After the worst May the box office has seen in 26 years, theaters are hoping that Sony/Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” can restart Hollywood’s momentum in June with a solid opening weekend. But not everyone is optimistic that will be the case.
Produced on a reported $100 million budget, “Bad Boys 4” is relatively less expensive than many of its peers in the summer action film space. That makes the current projections of a $45-50 million opening weekend — which was below the $62 million three-day opening of “Bad Boys For Life” on MLK weekend in 2020 — a decent start that could allow Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s latest wild ride to turn a profit if it continues to play among male moviegoers over the age of 35.
But “Bad Boys 4” is heading into theaters with as little momentum as any summer title, especially an R-rated one, has had in recent memory.

Let’s get the worst of it out of the way: We estimate, at best, a $700 million total domestic gross for June, or 30 percent down from last year. We’ll close the month at least 25 percent below the first half of 2023. There’s no mystery as to why: fewer high-impact releases, with last year’s strikes still taking their toll.
June also has three potential breakouts with “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) Friday, “Inside Out 2” (Disney) June 14, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) June 28. They also have high expectations which, if met, would go some way to restoring confidence. Fall short and the argument of “Well, this movie was never meant to be a blockbuster” will have run its course.
Everyone knew that 2024 would not be a great year. It was never going to equal the $9.1 billion of 2023, but $8.5 billion was the hope and $8 billion was the consensus.

With legacy sequels being all the rage in Hollywood, it’s within reason to imagine that perhaps a world exists where George Miller asks Mel Gibson to return for a new ‘Mad Max’ film in the future. If “Ghostbusters” can do it, so can ‘Mad Max.’ Well, there’s one problem, though–George Miller hasn’t thought about what an elderly Max would be like.

Within minutes of the actors strike ending on Nov. 9, Ryan Reynolds was making plans to get back to London and the set of Deadpool & Wolverine, one of the many movies shut down in mid-July when the walkout commenced. He and director Shawn Levy were determined to make their July 26 release date, which they were able to accomplish. For other tentpoles, it was too late, and they would ultimately decamp to 2025.
One studio head says the impact of the writers’ walkout, which lasted five months until a settlement was reached on Sept. 27, also played a major role. “Think of it like this — if the actors’ strike shut down the oil refinery, then the writers’ strike shut down the oil fields.”

It’s been two months since Dune Part 2 hit the theaters, and it continues to dominate the box office, having grossed a staggering $711 million globally. Despite this commercial success, director Denis Villeneuve has expressed his disappointment regarding Dune’s sustained dominance over other films in 2024. A Year of Disappointing Box Office Returns According to a Deadline report, the domestic box office is down by a significant 66% compared to last year. Films like Mad Max: Furiosa and The Fall Guy did not live up to expectations, with their openings falling short of predictions. Notably, Furiosa barely edged out The...

Attention: The Following Report May Contain Materials Sensitive To Some Readers. Discretion Is Advised.
Whenever a certain franchise is popular there are bound to be references and parodies from all cross media. Star Wars is no acceptation to that rule. From movies such as Spaceballs and Thumb Wars poking fun at the scenarios to skits in Saturday Night Live there is always something to make sport of. Including in the form or materials meant for “older audiences”.
That is what comic creators Mike and Mindy Wheeler were doing. They were/are in the process of making a comic titled “Star Whores: Episode IV – A New Hoe”. A mature themed parody comic based on Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The couple have also produced mature parody comics in the past such as “Trip Story” (Toy Story) and “G-Busters” (Ghostbusters).

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has become the first overseas feature to open at the top of the Japanese box office in 2024 and surpassed the opening for 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
Despite a soft opening and declining figures for the Warner Bros. action feature elsewhere in the world, Furiosa scored a strong start for an international film in Japan, where audiences are increasingly turning toward local productions.
The film took $2.05m (¥318m) during its three-day opening weekend in Japan, recording 199,163 admissions from May 31 to June 2.

Chris Hemsworth may have earned global recognition as an actor through his performance as Thor Odinson in projects from the MCU, but that isn’t the only franchise that has established a fairly respectable future for him in the industry.
While his other projects are one thing, the mastermind Avengers: Endgame helmers seem to have complete faith in one other of Hemsworth’s saga.

This one franchise is his superhit Extraction action saga, and Joe and Anthony Russo, who were the genius brains behind the 2019 masterpiece from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are already backing up that franchise.
But that’s not all, because Joe and Anthony Russo have even more on their mind about their next projects that would be focused on “original storytelling”!

One of 2023’s blockbusters lands on the streamer, with Oscar in hand and more thrills than most Hollywood summer offerings
At a divisive time of much uncertainty and strife, a constant has emerged from the ocean to serve as a great uniter: Godzilla. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, from Warner’s MonsterVerse franchise, is the rare fifth movie to approach a series high; just ask its studio stablemate Furiosa, an acclaimed fifth installment that’s become one of many entertaining 2024 movies to struggle at the box office, how difficult that is. On either side of the Godzilla x Kong triumph sit several more wins for the big G, courtesy of Godzilla Minus One, the most recent entry from the Japanese company Toho. That movie did great business at the box office last December, won an Oscar for visual effects in March, and currently sits atop the Netflix charts in its long-awaited streaming debut,...

It's no secret that the summer box office has not been off to a great start. "The Fall Guy" kicked things off with a disappointing opening weekend before Universal rushed the film to VOD. It got worse with the dual weak performances of both "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" more recently. No two ways about it: Things have been bad. But in looking for reasons to be optimistic, we may be able to turn to director John Krasinski's "If." The family-friendly flick opened in mid-May to middling results. It has, however, been legging out better than expected in North America -- so much so that maybe, just maybe, this one has a shot at pulling an "Elemental."
For those who may need a refresher, Pixar's "Elemental" opened to just $29.6 million in June last year and seemed to be dead on arrival. Then, something amazing happened.

If there are five ages of man, maybe there are four ages of “Bad Boys.” There’s the early age — the original “Bad Boys” came out in 1995 — of youthful effrontery: zappy, flashy, mouthy, decadent. There’s the age when the heroes start to say, “We’re too old for this shit!” There’s the age when they’re too old to even be saying that.
And then there’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth entry in the franchise, in which the actors, the audience, and the whole culture is now so old for this shit that perhaps the only thing left to do is to ramp up the trash nostalgia to new levels of shameless overkill. It’s a truth of the universe that all blockbuster action series must come to an end (“Die Hard with a Lethal Weapon for Another 48 Hrs.” is now ancient history). But in “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,...

Let’s face it, Quentin Tarantino’s truth bombs have always been intricate and delightful as the legendary director hardly refrains himself from making bold comments on anything related to movies. About 8 years ago, the director gave an eye-opening statement on movie ticket prices and it appears to be relevant even today.

Tarantino has a long and glorious career to his credit. Since his directorial debut with Reservoir Dogs in 1992, the director has given several acclaimed titles to global audiences. His unapologetic movies which often wrapped with the raw tale of the narratives on screen, elevated his legacy but in this process, Tarantino’s observation and experience in filmmaking gave him the insight to understand the ups and downs of the movie business.

According to IMDb data from the past week, the new Netflix series "Eric" was the most popular title on the site. The disturbing thriller—which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a grieving father and puppeteer—has had sustained interest since its May 30th premiere, thanks to its polarizing effect on audiences, in addition to strong central performances by Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffman (more on her later).
‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ was the top movie among IMDb users last week, despite the fact that it was outperformed at the box office by both ‘The Garfield Movie’ and John Krasinski’s ‘IF’ during these sluggish early days of the 2024 summer movie season.
Gaby Hoffman was the top name on the site last week, thanks to her performance as Cassie Anderson in the aforementioned “Eric.” Hoffman started as a child actress in films like ‘Field of Dreams’ and ‘Uncle Buck,’ but is more recently known for her role as Ali Pfefferman on Prime Video’s “Transparent,” a role that earned her two Emmy nominations. Other top names last week were Morena Baccarin, who celebrated a birthday and stars in the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Nicola Coughlan of “Bridgerton” fame, and Anya Taylor-Joy of ‘Furiosa.’
Kaiju fans are also stomping over to IMDb to learn more about ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ which just landed on Netflix. The Oscar-winning Japanese film was a surprise hit, and movie fans who missed the theatrical run have been patiently waiting for a streaming release. The movie premiered way back in October 2023, an eternity in the streaming age.
Finally, horror aficionados are keeping the conversation around ‘The First Omen’ alive now that the prequel has arrived on Hulu. The spike in interest is no surprise after the film’s successful theatrical run, good word of mouth from critics and audiences, and a strong central performance from Nell Tiger Free. Could ‘The Second First Omen’ be on the table? Fingers crossed.

Yesterday was the final Spider-Monday, with Spider-Man: No Way Home swinging back into theaters as part of Columbia Pictures' 100th anniversary celebrations.
The movie, originally released in 2021, brought together Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield for what proved to be arguably the McU's most spectacular team-up to date (it was also the best use of the Multiverse we've seen in this Saga).
Opening in 466 theaters across North America, it earned $475,000 yesterday, making it the highest-grossing instalment of the Holland-led Spider-Man trilogy during these weekly re-releases. Three years ago, it grossed over $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office by the end of its run.
Here's how the movies compare based on their respective "Spider-Mondays" from highest to lowest grossing:

Once upon a time, Hollywood's most tech-forward studios made many a breathless proclamation that streaming was the future. Simply put, nothing could rival the convenience, the lack of annoying ads, the vast library of titles available at our fingertips, or, most importantly of all, the affordability of subscribing to all the major streamers -- as opposed to venturing out to expensive movie theaters and catching the latest blockbuster on the big screen. Well, fast forward a few years and the biggest monkey's paw of all time has curled in ways that, quite frankly, we should've seen coming. For many discerning viewers, streaming has mostly just become synonymous with awfully pixelated and low-quality visuals, studios abruptly pulling entire movies and shows at the drop of a hat without offering any release on physical media, and a dystopia where algorithms and advertisements intrude on every spare inch of the screen. Good times!

George Miller’s epic Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is now playing in theatres. It’s the latest entry into the definitive post-apocalyptic saga of our time and a series that minted Mel Gibson as a global superstar, transformed Charlize Theron into an action heroine, and seems poised to do the same for Anya Taylor-Joy. In my opinion, there’s never been a bad Mad Max film, as they’re all quite different in tone and technique, although we all have our favorite. So, here’s our JoBlo list of Mad Max movies ranked from worst to best!

The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, has reached a significant milestone at the global box office. It was supposed to kick off the summer box office, but it failed to achieve that. The movie has already arrived on the Ott platforms; however, word of mouth for the film is strong and is moving ahead at a decent pace. Keep scrolling for more.
About the film-
Ryan Gosling plays the role of a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows, and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy, and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job.

With a track record of turning stories into sensational films, Matthew Vaughn has already astonished us with his directorial finesse. Unfortunately, in addition to creating critically acclaimed flicks like Layer Cake, Stardust, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, he has also directed films that fell flat with critics. That being said, his recent release—Argylle—starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, and Henry Cavill—has failed to capture the hearts of theatergoers.
Despite not breaking even at the box office, the film performed well on streaming platforms. While the box office numbers are still rolling in, with Vaughn at the helm and the film gaining traction, Argylle appears to be ripe for expansion.

Shari Redstone, whose National Amusements owns a controlling interest in Paramount Pictures parent Paramount Global, is reportedly weighing up a modified takeover offer of around $8bn from David Ellison’s Skydance Media and his backers RedBird Capital.
On the eve of Paramount Global’s annual general meeting on Tuesday, CNBC reported that the latest offer would see Redstone receive $2bn for National Amusements, while Skydance would pay $4.5bn to buy out half of Paramount Global Class B shareholders at $15 per share.
Skydance and RedBird have reportedly offered to pay $1.5bn in cash to reduce Paramount Global debt.

Another weekend in the books, another reason to be pessimistic about the state of the box office in 2024. We are just coming off of the worst Memorial Day weekend in decades in terms of ticket sales, thanks to weak performances by both "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie." Now? With no meaningfully big movies entering the marketplace, theaters were left to suffer -- so much so that this past weekend now ranks as literally one of the worst weekends the summer box office has experienced in a quarter century.
"The Garfield Movie" held far better than "Furiosa" in its second weekend, as the animated film topped the charts with a $14 million haul. That's good for Sony, but terrible for the industry at large. When we're in the midst of the summer moviegoing season and the number one movie on a given weekend pulls in $14 million, we're in trouble.

Update: (Monday Pm) As noted yesterday, the margin between the 2nd and 3rd place finish for If and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was slim, and in the end, after final figures were reported, their positions at the weekend box office flip-flopped. According to the latest numbers via Deadline, Furiosa made $10.785 million to If‘s $10.5. While that’s only a $285k difference, it gives Furiosa a bit of a better finish, allowing it to reclaim second place, although it trails far behind The Garfield Movie‘s first-place finish with $14 million.
Original Post:
The box office outlook for George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga looks pretty bleak. In my box office predictions, I anticipated the film being beaten by The Garfield Movie in its second weekend, but I didn’t think John Krasinski’s If, in week 3, would manage to overtake it at the box office. But,...

Monday Am: For those keeping track, Paramount’s If did not push Warner Bros.’ Furiosa into third, but the Ryan Reynolds starring, John Krasinski written/produced/directed title did put up a great hold in weekend 3 with -35%. Finals this Am for the top three pics are Sony’s The Garfield Movie at $14M, -42%; Warner Bros’ Furiosa at $10.785M, -59%; and Paramount’s If at $10.5M.
Can’t stress enough that we’ll have to have patience with the box office until Father’s Day weekend and beyond. No major studio event film on any weekend means no box office, and that’s exactly what went on here. With Garfield at $51.5M through ten days, and If at $80.1M, $1.2M ahead of Reynold’s Free Guy at same point in time, the live-action family movies are doing what they’re suppose to do. Minds still boggle over the results of Furiosa,...
