Since actors work with different directors all the time, it is inevitable that they might end up finding the one that truly brings out the potential in them. For Matt Damon, it is Clint Eastwood. The two film industry A-listers have collaborated together on two films so far, Invictus (2009) and Hereafter (2010), both of which received nominations at the Academy Awards for something or the other.

Matt Damon commended Clint Eastwood’s ability to avoid being pigeonholed in the many years he spent in the industry. He even stated that the filmmaker is the best example of what his friends – Ben Affleck and George Clooney – want their career to look like eventually and added that the environment he creates on set helps him become a better actor.

Talk To Me breakout star Sophie Wilde is set to appear in Watch Dogs, a long-in-gestation adaptation of Ubisoft’s hacking-based videogame series.
As such Hollywood films as Blackhat and Hackers have taught us, only the coolest and most photogenic people engage in cybercrime. The cool-and-trendy-hacker theme was continued in Watch Dogs, a series of sandbox action adventure videogames first published by Ubisoft in 2014.
Spawning a hit franchise comprising two sequels and counting, Watch Dogs sees high-tech outlaws cause all kinds of digital mischief in cities around the world, with each game taking in stealth, driving, fisticuffs, shooting and tinkering with electronic devices.
A film adaptation based on the series was first floated by Ubisoft Motion Pictures back in 2013, before the original game was even released. The division’s plans for a multitude of movies based on its games took something of a body blow, however, when 2016’s Assassin’s Creed,...

Damon worked with two of his acting idols in the 2009 feature Invictus. The sports drama saw him collaborating alongside Eastwood and Morgan Freeman for the first time. Just one year later, he teamed up with Eastwood again for Hereafter. In a resurfaced interview with Orange County Register, Damon explained what made him want to work with Eastwood for a second time so soon.
“It’s just his philosophy on work, and how he’s managed to be different all the time,” Damon said. “It’s the mark of true artist to defy any categorization for six decades in the movie business. To bathe in the glory...

Summer is long gone and it’s time to look beyond the blockbuster. Our latest study of recent books about or related to the world of filmmaking is full of artistic titans––Sofia Coppola, Whit Stillman, Clint Eastwood, Christian Petzold, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Wes Anderson. This column also boasts a lengthy rundown of noteworthy novels, many of which will surely be brought to large and small screens in years to come.
Archive by Sofia Coppola (MacK)
In recent years this column has covered several books focused on the iconic, inimitable Sofia Coppola, including a hardcover career overview and interview collection. Archive is constructed from the personal collection of the writer-director of The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette herself. And as one would expect from a filmmaker known for her sense of style, fashion, and design, the result is positively gorgeous. It is packed with photos, ephemera, collages, and text––nearly 500 pages’ worth.

We’re sad to report that beloved actor Mark Margolis died at 83 on Thursday. He is known for his show-stopping roles in movies like Scarface and Darren Aronofsky’s Pi, Requiem For A Dream, and The Fountain. On the television side of the industry, Margolis’ credits are incredibly impressive, covering an expansive spectrum of memorable roles and one-off characters. A valuable film, television, and stage player, he’s best known for his break-out role of Alberto “The Shadow” in Scarface and recently as the character Hector “Tio” Salamanca in the TV series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
Margolis passed away August 3, 2023, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in his beloved and longtime home of New York City, with his wife Jacqueline and Morgan at his bedside, following a short illness.
“He was one of a kind. We won’t see his likes again. He was a treasured client and a lifelong friend.

Steven Spielberg once met fellow filmmaker and veteran actor Clint Eastwood to discuss a project Eastwood was interested in potentially taking on.
But because of the peculiar circumstances of their meeting, Eastwood briefly wondered if there was something physically wrong with the actor.

Eastwood set out to direct the 2010 film Hereafter starring Matt Damon. The film was about a couple of civilians dealing with their individual near-death experiences, a project that intrigued Eastwood because of its spirituality. The film’s script initially landed on Spielberg’s plate. But the Oscar-winner would soon send it to Eastwood to see if he’d be willing to tackle the project instead.

If your perception of Christina Ricci is burned into your brain from the Nineties — when she broke into the public consciousness as the sullen child at the heart of the original Addams Family movie, then went on to play a sullen teen in Casper, a sullen tomboy in Now and Then, and a sullen new kid in Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain — you’d be forgiven for struggling to see her any other way. She does, too. Over the course of an hour-plus lunch on an overcast December day in Los Angeles,...

On paper, Clint Eastwood seems to have enjoyed a well plotted out career. In the early 1960s, he made himself known to American television viewers via his role as Rowdy Yates on "Rawhide." From there, he segued to the newfangled Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone as the laconic "Man with No Name" in the "Dollars Trilogy." As conventional Westerns faded out of fashion, Eastwood made violent, anti-mythic oaters like "Hang 'Em High" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales," while adopting the persona of Dirty Harry Callahan in a series of cop flicks that both capitalized on and tweaked the country's law-and-order fervor. Then, after a few stumbles in the late 1980s, Eastwood went full-on revisionist with "Unforgiven," at which point he became a perennial Oscar darling.
Amazingly, Eastwood is still plugging away at 92. That kind of career longevity isn't just rare, it's just about unprecedented. Only Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira,...

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is one of two Marvel superhero movies in the mix this year for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards. It’s a visually compelling introduction to a lesser-known Marvel Comics hero, as played by Simu Liu. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, this martial arts and fantasy spectacle was also the highest grossing movie of 2021 until along came a certain “Spider-Man” movie.
Just like many nominees in the Visual Effects category, “Shang-Chi’s” nominated team is a mix of previous contenders. A VFX vet for over 20 years, Christopher Townsend was a mainstay at Industrial Light and Magic (Ilm) for half that time. He’s also been involved with the VFX for quite a few Marvel movies, having previously received Oscar noms for “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” and “Iron Man 3.” Dan Oliver’s previous nomination in this category was for...

As we continue to go through this year’s Best Visual Effects category at the Oscars, we come to “Free Guy,” an action-comedy that required extensive visual effects to create a realistic video game world in which Ryan Reynolds‘s Guy lives, one that allowed for all sorts of impossibilities from real life. Netflix is snapping up premiere visual-effects house Scanline VFX, announcing a deal to acquire the company that has done work on Netflix originals like “Stranger Things” as well as tentpole movies for Marvel, DC and others.
Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022, subject to regulatory approvals and other usual closing conditions.
Netflix said it will operate Scanline VFX as a standalone business that will continue to work with a variety of clients. Founded in 1989 in Munich, Scanline VFX also operates locations in Los Angeles, London, Vancouver, Montreal, Stuttgart and Seoul.
It’s the second major M&a deal in the VFX space this month, after game-development software vendor Unity said it will buy Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital technology and tools business for $1.625 billion.

Burgess is in the Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actor race this year for the Netflix comedy’s interactive special “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend.” Like Burgess, Linney also jumped over to limited from comedy for “The Big C: Hereafter” in 2013. “Hereafter” was the fourth and final season of “The Big C,” but the four-episode installment and the rules at the time allowed Showtime to submit it as a limited series instead of as a comedy, which was the show’s designation for its first three outings. Linney was nominated for Best Comedy Actress...

A long time has passed since Clint Eastwood directed a movie that wasn’t ostensibly about the quiet, undersung heroes of the American fabric. It’s been nearly a decade since he directed a film that wasn’t, in some way, inspired by true events. (That would be the forgettable 2010 supernatural drama Hereafter.) In the intervening years, […]

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we explore the career of a B-Side prince: Matt Damon. From his Oscar-laden breakout film Good Will Hunting to the upcoming Ford v Ferrari, the Boston-born filmmaker has made many hit movies, and twice as many that were underseen. And don’t get us started on all of the cameos!
Our Damon-focused episode explores Gerry, The Brothers Grimm, Hereafter and The Great Wall. We discuss the career of Terry Gilliam and his many troubles making Grimm. We dive into the tragic inspiration behind Gerry as well as Gus Van Sant and Matt Damon’s desire to experiment with long camera shots. We gauge how accurate podcast producer Conor O’Donnell’s review of The Great Wall...

Laura Linney has the best Emmy track record any actor could hope for. She has won four times out of her five nominations thus far, but if you break that down further she has actually won for every single role she has ever been nominated for. Is “Ozark” next? One of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed thinks so.
The actress’s first win was Best Movie/Mini Actress in 2002 for playing the title character, Iris Bravard, in the Showtime telefilm “Wild Iris.” Then she won Best Comedy Guest Actress in 2004 for playing the title character’s love interest Charlotte in the final season of “Frasier.” And she returned to Best Movie/Mini Actress in 2008, where she prevailed as First Lady Abigail Adams in HBO’s “John Adams.”

On Friday, the film dominated the market, taking 55% of all grosses with £2.66m – the biggest opening day for a film in the UK this year. That was also the third biggest UK opening day of all time for an 18-certificate film, behind Fifty Shades Of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker.

Threequel “Fifty Shades Freed” (Universal) easily led all films, including three wide openers, as so far 2018 lags behind 2017 at the box office, going against sports competition from both the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics. Grosses are now down one per cent.
Next week’s anticipated release of Marvel’s “Black Panther” (Disney) this Friday will reverse that trend. Early projections for this eagerly anticipatedAfrican-based superhero story directed by Ryan Coogler (“Creed”) are about $150 million, the total for all the films for last year’s three-day President’s Day weekend.
The openers this weekend totaled an expected $75 million. They represent three distinctive strains of mainstream studio product these days: a franchise sequel (“Fifty Shades Freed”), a hybrid animated-live action feature (“Peter Rabbit”) and a true-life heroic action dramatic re-enactment (“The 15:17 to Paris”).
Disconcertingly, last year’s three similar titles totaled $55 million more: “The Lego Batman Movie” at $53 million (more...

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, wherein we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Last week was an especially slow week as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) regained the top spot from Maze Runner: The Death Cure. That likely won’t happen this week as there are three big releases aiming at different demographics. The final chapter of the Fifty Shades series whips into theaters, while Peter Rabbit is aimed towards family audiences, and The 15:17 to Paris looks to please the older demographic. Let’s see which comes out on top.
Fifty Shades Freed
What we are excited about: The fact that this is the final installment, seriously. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) was a boring, poorly made, not-so-erotic erotic thriller, and Fifty Shades Darker (2017) was even worse. So, hope for the third installment being a step in the right direction is almost non-existent, and we...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What filmmaker would you most like to see try their hand at a horror movie?
Kristy Puchko (@KristyPuchko), Pajiba/Riot Material
I struggled with this question, because a lot of the directors I have adored have worked in horror, be it Tim Burton (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Robert Zemeckis (“Death Becomes Her”), Edgar Wright (“Shawn of the Dead”), Frank Oz (“Little Shop of Horror”), Guillermo del Toro (“Crimson Peak”), Bong-Joon Ho (“The Host”), Jim Jarmusch (“Only Lovers Left Alive”), or Taika Waititi (“What We Do In the Shadows”). The National Board of Review, the only non-industry and non-journalist/critic group of note that passes out awards each year have announced their winners. They are notoriously secretive and hard to predict apart from three things: their eternal love for Clint Eastwood (even when no one else is loving him as with titles like Hereafter) so we knew Sully would be on their list; their recency bias (they love December releases historically more than Oscar); and their magical not-at-all suspicious divvying up of prizes to make sure each studio must purchases a table at their banquet.
Their top winner this year were Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea which won four awards and Moonlight which won two. No other film took multiple prizes though some received a prize plus a citation on one of their top five / top ten lists. Notable Oscar hopefuls that received no mentions whatsover: Jackie,...

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Clint Eastwood as director.
Clint Eastwood became an american film star in the 1960’s thanks to his acting performances in a number of western films. As he began to branch out with new roles in front of the camera, he sought out to have more creative input into the types of film projects that he would be involved in. One way he was able to accomplish this was by creating his own production company which eventually allowed him to work behind the camera as director. His first film as director was 1971’s Play Misty For Me, which was well received by critics and did well at the box office. HIs second film as director was High Plains Drifter (1973), in which he also starred.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...

There are few actresses quite like Cecile de France.
Best known for her work in films like The Kid with a Bike, de France has become one of the mainstays of French cinema, with mainstream Us audiences getting to know the great actress through a range of performances in films such as High Tension to the Clint Eastwood-helmed Hereafter. De France has captivated audiences with her stunning beauty and magnetic screen presence and physicality, and her latest picture shines a distinct light on both of those things.
Entitled Summertime, de France stars opposite Izia Higelin, in what is one of the year’s most touching tales of romance. Higelin is the picture’s lead, starring as a young farm girl named Delphine who leaves the strict confines of her parents’ farm to move to Paris with the hopes of growing personally and economically. Going against Randy Meeks’ rules for surviving a horror film, the killer in Cherry Falls (2000) seems to only target virgins. Ahead of its March 29th Blu-ray release from Scream Factory, Cherry Falls is teased in high-definition clips and a trailer.
From Shout! Factory: “A serial killer is stalking the peaceful town of Cherry Falls. At first, it seems that he is just targeting teenagers, but after the third killing it becomes clear that all the victims have been virgins. When the town’s students hear about this, they realize that there is only one way to protect themselves and begin planning a “Pop Your Cherry” party where they will all lose their virginities together. Meanwhile, Jodi (Brittany Murphy, Clueless, Sin City), the virtuous daughter of the town’s sheriff (Michael Biehn, Aliens, Grindhouse), decides to take matters into her own hands and trap the killer herself.

Manuel here. One of our favorite wins from last night’s Academy Awards was Ex Machina’s triumph in the Best Visual Effects category.
We marveled at its nod when the nominations came out mostly because it seemed like the low-key supportive use of visual effects that rarely get cited in the category (why else would you pass over the effects of say, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?). Add to that a stellar category across the board—Judy! Bb-8! Furiosa! Mars!—and the A24 film win feels all the more laudable. Sometimes, it seems, “best” need not mean “most” to Oscar members.
But two things are particularly striking to the inner number cruncher:
1. Ex Machina became the second non-Best Picture nominee to win in this category since the Academy expanded the Best Pic roster. Interstellar, as Amir reminded me in the comments, was the first. As you’ll remember,...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
American Sniper (Clint Eastwood)
Where a lot of recent Eastwood pictures (Changeling, Hereafter, even Jersey Boys) contain patches of awkwardness, American Sniper — particularly in its war sequences, which Joel Cox and Gary Roach edit with white-knuckle precision — exhibits a riveting level of control. This may just be the result of well-matched material (a character study about a born-and-bred cowboy nicknamed “the Legend” could hardly be more...

In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

"This is truly a dream team." Warner Bros has officially announced that Clint Eastwood will be directing the movie about Captain Sully, the pilot who was able to safely land U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in New York in January 2009. The title seems to be Miracle on the Hudson, but that may change. The announcement was made official by Warner Bros via THR, with statements from Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger himself. "I am very glad my story is in the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood, and veteran producers Allyn Stewart and Frank Marshall. The project could not have found a better home than Warner Bros. Pictures," he says. Looks like a fine team, here's to hoping it turns out okay. Clint Eastwood has been on a roll, directing movie after movie after movie recently. He latest was American Sniper (which was nominated for Best...

It's speculation time! Reports are coming in that Franz Drameh (Attack The Block, Hereafter, Edge Of Tomorrow) has joined the cast of the CW's Arrow/The Flash spinoff show. His character has the good old fashioned alliterative secret identity name of Jay Jackson, but the DC superhero he's actually playing remains a mystery. Could it be Static Shock? Black Lighting perhaps? We do have some details on this Mr. Jackson, as according to the official press release he'll be a "former high school athlete, whose pro-career was derailed by injury. Now making ends meets as an auto mechanic, Jay will come to have a surprising affiliation to the S.T.A.R. Labs crew." That makes him sound a Lot like Cyborg, but with that character expected to make his big screen debut in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, is that likely? Whoever he turns out to be he'll...

'The Lazarus Effect' box office: Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass horror movie arrives comatose (photo: Olivia Wilde in 'The Lazarus Effect') (See previous post: "'Focus': Will Smith Has One of Worst Opening Weekends of His Career.") Despite recent news that human head transplants are a mere two years away, the Mark Duplass-Olivia Wilde horror movie The Lazarus Effect – about bringing the dead back to life (as if world overpopulation weren't already a problem) – grossed $10.6 million from 2,666 U.S. and Canada venues on opening weekend, Feb. 27-March 1, 2015, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The Relativity Studios-distributed low-budget horror flick had earned an estimated $3.8 million on opening-day Friday, including $350,000 from Thursday night screenings. Last week, box-office prognosticators had been expecting an opening between $12-$14 million. That was adjusted downward to $10 million or whereabouts after the film's disappointing Friday debut. Some, in fact,...

En équilibre
Director: Denis Dercourt // Writer: Denis Dercourt
French director Denis Dercourt is generally underappreciated in the Us, despite having helmed the superb 2006 film The Page Turner, which premiered at Cannes and is one of his only titles to receive Us distribution. In 2013, Dercourt helmed two titles, Flesh of My Flesh and the German production, A Pact, neither of which have been lucky enough to see play in the Us outside of minor festivals. We have high hopes for this project, which has been cited as the filmmaker’s biggest project yet and is headlined by Cecile de France (known to English speaking audiences for High Tension and Hereafter), as well as the very busy French actor/director Albert Dupontel. His seventh feature film (see set pic above) En équilibre (In Balance) concerns Marc, an equestrian who after a serious accident on a film shoot, loses all hope to mount back on.
