Heirloom is a recipient of the Russo Brothers Italian American Film Forum grant. Spearheaded by Hollywood directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the Film Forum is an initiative to fund films depicting and exploring the Italian American experience for the benefit of future generations.
The interview with Isabella Rossellini was shot on Mama Farm, the actress' 28-acre farm in Brookhaven, New York, which aims to foster the next generation of environment stewards.
Known for her comedy and commercial work, this is director Michela Maria's directorial debut as a documentarian.
Producer Taylor Taglianetti got involved in the project after Michela signed up to become a member of her organization, The National Organization of Italian Americans (NOIAFT). As a result, several NOIAFT members and friends got involved in the project.
Michela Maria only started learning to speak Italian a year before filming. Making the film and getting to visit and speak to her cousins in Sicily was a part of her personal Italian renaissance.
