Netflix continues its long-standing tradition of dropping more and more flicks and shows from previous years, filling its already infinite collection up, and next month will mark yet another arrival of a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The streaming has recently welcomed the Gyllenhaal-led thriller Nocturnal Animals and is set to add a 2017 sci-fi horror with the actor in the leading role in July.
Also starring Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds, Daniel Espinosa’s movie titled Life follows three astronauts and the rest of the crew aboard the International Space Station who succeed in finding evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars.
The seemingly exciting discovery turns into the crew members’ worst nightmare as they realize that the life-form they have been exploring is much more intelligent and dangerous than anyone could have ever imagined.

Apart from dropping brand new movies and shows every week, Netflix also keeps itself busy adding more of old flicks to its giant collection, and this time the streaming opted for a 2016 neo-noir psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal in the leading roles.
The reason why the movie has been kept from streaming on Netflix all this time remains a mystery, but now the high-rated thriller can be finally checked out by the streaming’s viewers.
Written and directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals follows Susan Morrow, an art gallery owner living in Los Angeles. Out of the blue, she receives a manuscript for a novel written by her estranged ex-husband Edward who also sends her an invitation to have dinner with him once he’s in the town.

Supuestamente,...

If you look through some of the boldest, most ambitious works of the past few years, chances are you’ll find Andrea Riseborough on the call sheet.

Samara Weaving is buckling up for 20th Century Studios forthcoming heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Sitting shotgun for the project is Karl Glusman, with writer-director Shawn Simmons at the helm. Producing the fast-paced thriller is Deadpool franchise alums Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
In Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving plays Edie, “a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.” (via Deadline)
Glusman hits the pavement as John, Edie’s recurrent boyfriend. Despite their differences, Edie feels compelled to pull John out of the flames of a terrible situation.
As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

Due to his behavior, many assume that the unnamed co-star who was horrible to actress Rebecca Ferguson on set was him. However, there’s an instance that is making people change their minds about the fact that the Brokeback Mountain star could have upset Ferguson.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to reunite with director David Mackenzie as the star of upcoming heist thriller Fuze.
The pair previously worked together on Mackenzie’s 2018 Robert the Bruce drama Outlaw King, which followed heist drama Hell or High Water.
Written by Ben Hopkins, Fuze opens on the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in a London construction site, sparking a mass evacuation, which the serves as perfect cover for a heist.
‘I had the idea of combining all the high stakes of an unexploded bomb with that of a bank robbery – clashing these two genres to create as much pressure as possible in a context that feels as real as possible. Ben Hopkins took those ingredients and cooked up the compelling script that we are now taking into production,” said Mackenzie.
The film is produced by Gillian Berrie for Sigma Films and Sebastien Raybaud and Callum Grant for Anton.
Giles Nuttgens joins Mackenzie’s creative team as director of photography after previously collaborating together on Hell or High Water.
’Together David Mackenzie and Dp, Giles Nuttgens are dynamos. Just add Aaron Taylor-Johnson and we have the Midas touch for this whirlwind movie,” said Berrie.
Anton is financing and will be selling the world rights at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin and will present a sizzle reel for the film.
David is uniquely talented at pairing large-scale filmmaking with truly unique characters. Fuze melds the relentless tension of a bomb movie to the heist genre,” said Anton’s Raybaud and Grant.
UTA Independent Film Group and WME Independent will co-rep the US rights with Anton.
Taylor-Johnson is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, WME and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern, Llp. David Mackenzie is repped by UTA, United Agents in London, and Alan Wertheimer and Kim Jaime. Gillian Berrie is repped by UTA, United Agents in London, and Alan Wertheimer and Kim Jaime. Giles Nuttgens is repped by UTA.

Two-time Emmy Award winner Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) and two-time Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) have committed to star in Netflix’s Death by Lightning, a political drama based on Candice Millard’s Destiny Of The Republic. Matthew Macfadyen will star as Charles Guiteau and Michael Shannon will play James Garfield.
“Death by Lightning is a drama series that brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield, reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau — the man who would come to kill him,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.
The series was created by Mike Makowsky (Bad Education) who’ll serve as writer and executive producer. Game of Thrones and 3 Body Problem‘s David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Bernie Caulfield also executive produce along with director Matt Ross. (Ross will direct all episodes.

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.

There was a time, in the ’90s, when indie film noir thought it was being hip by imitating the trappings of ’40s thrillers — the dark shadows, Venetian blinds, and “slinky” femme fatales. But a true noir never really looks back; it’s always pushing forward, toward fresh new varieties of desire and dread. “Love Lies Bleeding” is like that. It’s the second feature directed by Rose Glass, the British director of “Saint Maud” (2019), and though it’s made with a powerful sense of style, there’s nothing retro or mannered about it. It’s set in a small desert town in rural grunge New Mexico in 1989, and from the opening moments, which unfold at the warehouse workout gym where Lou (Kristen Stewart) toils away as a manager, the movie lets you taste the scuzzy deadbeat Western sleaze as surely as Mailer’s “The Executioner’s Song” did.

Charles Melton hasn’t had a great week. First, he missed out on the BAFTA longlist for Best Supporting Actor. Then, he was snubbed by the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards in their list of official nominees. The two notable omissions have damaged Melton’s chances of an Oscar nomination for his breakout role in Todd Haynes‘ exquisite “May December.”
The Netflix movie follows Natalie Portman as an actress who visits a couple (Julianne Moore and Melton) to do research on them for a film based on the couple’s past scandal. The scandal in question revolves around the couple’s initial affair, which began when the woman was in her 30s and the boy was only 13. As the man — Joe — Melton delivers one of the most heartbreaking performances of the year. There are a few elements of the Golden Globes that, while relevant to only people in Los Angeles and the wider entertainment industry, explain the show’s lasting appeal to the town’s starriest names. It’s often billed as LA’s drunkest night.
That’s been the grin-and-bear-it aspect of this awards show at its height: Suffer through courting favor with the often offbeat and invasive former Hollywood Foreign Press Association; gain access to a genuinely fun night on the town.
The trophies themselves? Almost a consolation prize, one that can market select dramas, musicals, and comedies as must-sees in theaters before the Oscars, rather than serving as a reliable barometer for where Academy voters’ heads are at.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Supporting Actor, which got a new twist with Friday’s BAFTA longlists.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s the Friday before an awards-palooza weekend and we’re typing about what has become, at least to me, a very intriguing Best Supporting Actor race. Earlier this morning, the BAFTA longlists were released and sent a mild disturbance through Film Twitter. While presumed future nominees like Ryan Gosling, Robert Downey Jr., Robert De Niro and Mark Ruffalo made the cut in the Best Supporting Actor field, online favorites Charles Melton and Willem Dafoe did not. Does that spell trouble in River City or is it merely a case of BAFTA being BAFTA? Last year, eventual Oscar nominees Brian Tyree Henry...

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Ryan Gosling is one of the biggest contenders for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig‘s smash hit “Barbie.” The Warner Bros. movie follows Margot Robbie‘s titular Barbie as she leaves Barbie Land for the real world in search of answers after suffering an existential crisis. Gosling’s performance as Ken has brought him plenty of plaudits, leading to a strong case for Best Supporting Actor in this year’s Oscars race.
However, this isn’t the first Oscars race Gosling has been in as he’s received two Academy Award nominations before. Let’s take a look back at them.
Gosling was first nominated in 2007 when he received a Best Actor notice for “Half Nelson,” which follows Gosling as a junior high school teacher with a drug habit. Gosling’s teacher forms a friendship with one of his students...

Tom Ford, the international fashion icon of the 1990s and early 2000s, has compared the length of his peak of cultural influence to the Beatles’, theorizing that a decade was a natural span of time for it to last.
Ford, who went on to write, produce and direct two acclaimed Hollywood feature films, also wondered how long Taylor Swift has in her post as the Princess of Pop.
“I had a 10-year run,” Ford, speaking to GQ for a long-form interview published this week, said of his tenure as Gucci’s design director, before he left and started his own namesake label. “And I think that’s all you get. A PR person would tell me not to say that. But that was where I moved the needle culturally. I was in my 30s and early 40s.
“How many years will Taylor have it?” Ford continued. “I mean, the Beatles.

Marvel Studios is back with its first new movie since “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and, should the release schedule hold, its last new movie until the third “Deadpool,” which doesn’t come out until next July.
This being a Marvel movie, there are characters old and new to keep track of, as our heroes jet across the galaxy in an attempt to thwart a massive threat to our world and countless others.
Here’s a complete cast and character guide for “The Marvels.” The only folks we have left out are the ones you definitely don’t want spoiled.

Carol Danvers is a former test pilot turned superhero, whose origins were traced in “Captain Marvel” and who was last seen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” lending a hand in what is now canonically referred to as the Battle of Earth.

Tom Ford is ready to return to the director’s chair, and this time, he’s focusing on original screenplays.
The “Nocturnal Animals” helmer told GQ that he in part stepped away from his iconic fashion career as a designer to instead focus on filmmaking.
“There are several reasons I sold my company,” Ford said. “I felt, after 35 years, I had said everything I could say with fashion. It’s important to know when to get off the stage. I loved making the two films that I made. That was the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire life.”
Ford directed “A Single Man” in 2009 and “Nocturnal Animals” in 2016, with both films being adaptations.
“I’m 62. Hopefully, I’ll remain somewhat together until 82. So I want to spend the next 20 years of my life making films,” Ford said. “And the clock is ticking. And so it was time to say goodbye to fashion.

As “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” continues to dominate the box office, one three-screen arthouse movie theater in Milwaukee will also show films starring several of Taylor Swift’s past boyfriends.
Cara Ogburn, artistic director of Oriental Theater overseer Milwaukee Film, brainstormed the idea in response to the requirement that theaters can only show “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” Thursdays through Sundays.
“What if we show all Jake Gyllenhaal movies,” Ogburn, who was interviewed by The New York Times, recalled suggesting initially as a joke. “True counterprogramming.”
Thus next week, the theater will screen “Twilight” starring Taylor Lautner as werewolf Jacob Black, “Dunkirk” featuring Harry Styles formerly of the boyband “One Direction” and now doing just fine on his own as a solo musician and actor, “Crimson Peak” starring Tom Hiddleston before he took on the mantle of the MCU’s Lokie and several Jake Gyllenhaal features — “Zodiac,” “Enemy,” “Nocturnal Animals...
