Raw review. Didn't read the book. Only saw the first movie.
28 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not being a "Games" fan, just reviewing this movie for what it is.

Visually impressive. Actually liked the singing and songs.

Thought it had not so subtle messages about the world today. There are people who will sell their soul to keep an easy life even if it means hurting other people. Snow's grandmother was a perfect example.

As for the 3 chapters, only chapter 2 was unique to the Hunger Games. The other chapters consisted of school/academy competitions similar to a Harry Potter movie. And a boy/girl relationship chapter that happens in nearly every romcom or drama movie where the boy does nearly anything to keep the girl

Despite the length, felt it moved at an acceptable pace. This may be due to my lack of having to continually compare the movie to the book. But realized about halfway through that there will be more sequels to the prequel.

Assuming some of the very negative reviews are due to the lack of any obvious LGBT scenes.

Lessons highlighted here still relevant today
16 June 2023
Amazing that this movie released in 1942, just at the beginning of WW2 is still relevant today. Will not criticize production value of an 80 year old movie as some reviewers have done. Was amazed at the parallels to what is still happening today.

Citizens urged to "snitch" on their neighbors. Others oblivious to the loss of freedoms that are being threatened by the current regime. Political opponents being arrested. Food and energy shortages.

Given all that, the story was very compelling. A self-absorbed elitist ignoring current events until they affect her personally. Somewhat of a love story, but the fight for freedom is primary. Some twists and turns make it an interesting 100+ minutes.

Agree with some others about mis-casting, but only with John Wayne. Substitute Errol Flynn or Douglas Fairbanks and this would have been a classic.

Predictive programming
12 June 2023
Watched this for the first time 10 years after its release. Surprised by its predictive programming. Unsure if it was intentional. Showed corruption in the Drug Enforcement Agency which is likely today. Corruption in Naval Intelligence and the use of psyops.

Showed how our border was being compromised and how money was flowing from the cartels to those in power. Is it any wonder, when a former president attempted to build a wall to stop the flow of illegal drugs and human trafficking that he was fought by government insiders?

Besides that, both Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg were great. The movie was entertaining and kept the viewer guessing.

Less than 2 hours, which is always a plus.

A Tale of Two Kidnappings
30 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Note: This reviewer has not read the book or seen any of the adaptations. So, this review will not be a comparison to other versions.

This was a very entertaining film. The story was fast paced and an easy 90 minute watch. Definitely had a "Tale of Two Cities" sentiment with Alan Breck agreeing to make a similar sacrifice as Sydney Carton.

The "love story" was not that believable with Warner Baxter in the Alan Breck role. Did not see the chemistry. Maybe Errol Flynn or Tyrone Power or even Douglas Fairbanks. But not that hard to overlook. Who am I to judge what a woman may desire?

Contains most elements of a watchable film: good actors, good story, surprise elements, action scenes, evil villains, and a pretty girl. Recommend this to all, especially Freddie Bartholomew fans.

Gracie Allen has a death wish!
15 April 2022
For the older reviewers, Gracie Allen was a female (I guess today I need to say that) comedian whose schtick was that she took every comment literally.

Now take that character and replace Charles Bronson in the movie "Death Wish", add some comedy, and a needless sex scene and you have this movie.

The movie was hard not to turn off through the first half hour, but after that, it turns into a fairly entertaining drama with a good backstory and a little twist.

Just 90 minutes, so not a big time waste.

Night of the Living Environmentalists
19 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Change rural western PA with somewhere in a south American jungle. Replace the stranded people in a farmhouse with a group of environment activists in a cage. Replace zombies with native cannibals. Throw in multiple failed escape attempts. Captives fighting with each other.

Replace black and white with color. And you basically have this movie.

Big Pharma is bad
9 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The main message of this movie is to show the evil behind the relationship between pharmaceutical companies and corrupt government officials. Unfortunately the plot of a husband suspicious of his young, attractive wife distracts from this message, then morphs into his search for those responsible for her death.

The details of this plot become somewhat unbelievable. Would a high ranking government official turn over a highly classified document to a young married woman (half his age) on the promise of a sexual liaison sometime in the future? Then despite not having the liaison occurring, sending an incriminating letter documenting the "deal" and professing his love? There had to be a better way to bring about her demise and continue the story of exposing the corruption.

Also, did not understand the ending. Wouldn't it have been a better tribute to his wife to continue to expose the corruption instead of accepting his death?

The movie, despite criticizing the decisions made by "big pharma" due to the collateral deaths of vaccine "test subjects", it also subtlety exposing the moral dilemma these companies face. In the movie, it is admitted that the TB vaccine does work against TB, but some suffer deaths. How many would have died from TB, if the vaccine was delayed by 3 more years of testing? Just a fictional story.

Also, the movie "Blood Diamond" essentially uses a similar plot but diamond mining substituted for vaccine manufacturing.

Cool Hand Luke prepares for Viet Nam
12 December 2021
Appreciate the reviews by those that actually went through basic training and were at Tigerland. Reminder that this is a fictional movie. The story has an anti-war theme centered around the main character. Like "Cool Hand Luke", Roland Bozz is anti-establishment but sticks up for the "little guy". Not a bad story overall. Could have sent the same message without the sex scenes.

Predicting today's headlines
2 October 2021
Amazingly, the first 15 minutes of this movie, describes the withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan in August 2021. This movie is about a similar situation in 1906 in the Philippines.

Despite objections from the locals, the order has been given for US to leave the island, leaving a small band of US soldiers to train the islanders to defend themselves from the fanatical Muslim Moros.

The comradery between Gary Cooper, David Niven and Broderick Crawford is similar to the trio of Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr and Victor Mclaglen from Gunga Din.

Lots of action/battle scenes, some hard to believe. But not a waste of your viewing time.

"Dead End" Women.
26 September 2021
This is essentially a remake of the 1938 Dead End Kid/Humphrey Bogart movie "Crime School", except with women instead of the Dead End Kids. Rochelle Hudson plays the Billy Halop role and Frieda Inescort fills in for Bogart. Also borrows some of the plot from "Hell's Kitchen" with Ronald Reagan.

Very tame for a women's prison movie by today's standards. Not as entertaining as the Dead End Kid versions, but well done and easy viewing.

So much more than Hunchback
12 March 2021
This movie should be "must watch" for any civics class in high school/college. The themes are just as relevant today. There are statements about immigration, technology, power of the press, government overreach, racism, sexual harassment, religion, identity politics, poverty, justice, and pure evil.

Watch it and learn.

Only 2 wagons to retrieve 260 dead soldiers?
30 May 2019
The first problem with this movie is that it attempted to be somewhat relevant to actual historical events. They should have crafted the screenplay based on total fiction. No historical names. No historical battles.

The second problem is that most of the action had nothing to do with the 7th Cavalry's interaction with Indians. It was mostly infighting between soldiers.

The most glaring issue was the central plot issue: retrieving the bodies of the dead soldiers. How many soldiers were to be retrieved in 2 tiny wagons?

This would have been a poor episode of the TV show Cheyenne.

She's Just Not That Into You
27 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
** Contains Spoilers**

If they just had a different title for this film, it might be more appreciated from younger audiences. It also could be titled, "Whatever Happened to Baby and Mildred".

Besides the somewhat unbelievable plot of a pre-med student with means becoming obsessed with a floozy waitress, I was amazed at Phillips response to hearing that Mildred's baby had died, "I'm glad". That takes pro-choice to a new level. This would not get a great reception from today's PC world.

Also, Mr. Miller (the baby's father) would have a few less schillings in his Lloyds of London bank account by today's standards. The movie does not explain why Mildred did not take legal action. Was Mr. Miller's cavalier attitude for ignoring his own child's welfare a sign of the times?

Despite the story line not being very believable (pre-med student sacrificing career and principles for unattractive floozy), it is worth a viewing just to see these fabled actors in their early roles, especially the beautiful Frances Dee. Who in their right mind would choose Mildred over Sally?

I would have liked the movie better if Phillip did not get out of the gutter. Why a happy ending for this undeserving loser?
