The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964)
Only for Mummy horror aficionados!
A mediocre plot, subpar acting, laughable dialogue do not a classic make. To put it mildly, not the best Mummy outing. The sets, and Egyptian "artifacts" are pretty cool. But all else is a big snooze. The leading lady is abysmal. The male leads irksome. Fred Clark is wasted here, mainly because he is so out of place. If you are expecting any historical accuracy here, don't bother. I had not seen this one in many, many years and was eager to see it. Truth be told it has not stood up well, I remember it being so much better. It's one hour and twenty minutes long, and feels so much longer. Bypass this one unless you're a glutton for punishment.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
A fair appraisal
I have seen this film twice completely. Once when it came out, and earlier today. I have to admit he first half is very engaging. But the second half of the film slows down immensely. I liked cast, they did fine, and there was not too much corny dialogue. There is a lot of artistic licence here. Fair enough. These are actors in a film, not scientists. I found the concept great, but the storyline ridiculous. There was too much filler. So I have given it five stars. Ten stars for the first half, minus give stars for the second half. I do wonder how this film would have faired if 30-40 minutes were cut from it.
I Married Joan (1952)
An "almost" classic.
I've watched most of the available episodes of "I Married Joan" and even though I liked Joan Davis, I find many of the episodes rather mediocre. Talented actors weren't lacking on this series, but the writing is pretty banal. Joan was very funny, very attractive and quite charming and I feel the real reason this series never in the same league as "I Love Lucy" was the writing! To me it's an "almost" classic. Is it worth checking out? Definitely. But keep your expectations low and you might really enjoy some of the episodes. Her physical comedy is amazing. I am being very generous in my rating of 7/10 primarily because Joan was undoubtedly talented, and better writers could only have helped this series. But as a comedy series 5 or 6/10 is probably more accurate.
Alien Conquest (2021)
Wow...
Wow....and not in a good way. Take an HG Wells story and change it up a bit and voila! You have film with wooden acting, corny dialogue, and lousy CGI. This is the Asylum's third outing with WotW and this is probably the weakest. I don't recommend this, but I know there are gluttons for punishment out there. Knock yourselves out!
Hardware (1990)
Rubbish....
Even though I had never heard of this film, I decided to watch it. In spite of the mixed reviews I gave it a shot. Sorry folks this film is rubbish. I've never heard of this flick and now I know why. It's an incoherent mess.
King Charles III (2017)
Decent acting in...
A terribly flawed film. As a Shakespearean style tragedy, it's an interesting premise, but as "what if" history it surely falls flat. The writer (Mike Bartlett) needed to do his research (much better than he did). I can't believe this is what the BBC has become. I think they've lost their minds if they think they can keep distributing messes like this one.
The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
Starts off well enough....
Most of story is decent, the acting too, but the film kinda runs off the track about 2/3's in. I never read the book, so I've nothing to compare it with. Since we've been inundated with zombie-genre films I've learned not to expect much, so I wasn't that let down. Those "second generation" feral kids had me shaking my head and chuckling, and the cast walking through dozens of "dormant" infected...really?
Pulp Fiction (1994)
I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate this film. But the soundtrack is brilliant!
Let me start by saying that I love gangster films and film noir. I believe I see them all. So I went to see this when it came out because some Oz friends of mine highly recommended it. The film starts out well enough. (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer's performances gave me high hopes). Needless to say from there there was long, long 160 minute spiral out of control. An all-star cast and a great soundtrack notwithstanding. I just didn't "get it" then...and frankly I still don't. I have enjoyed a few of Tarantino's other films, but this one was just vile. I can't recommend it, but I do believe in to each his/her own. Watch at your own risk.
The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)
Decent cast, highly overrated "comedy".
The infamous chest waxing scene is probably the funniest part (and best known scene) of this overly long film. Despite the cast, FYOV falls short of the mark for me, I found it tedious at best. I give it *** out of 10 stars--one star for each time I laughed.
Bigfoot (2012)
Wow....
This movie is a big pile of doo-doo. This movie is a big pile of doo-doo. This movie is a big pile of doo-doo. This movie is a big pile of doo-doo. This movie is a big pile of doo-doo. This movie is a big pile of doo-doo.
Somebody Feed Phil (2018)
Not great, but not bad.
Phil is a sweet, amiable, if a bit goofy host. I watched this because I am a huge fan of "Everybody Loves Raymond" and that this got good reviews. I watched series one and two, but somehow this show just is middle of the road for me. I gave it six out of ten stars rather than five, only because Phil seems like such a nice guy. I think if the programme were cut to 30 minutes and had less pandering it might be more appealing, but that's just my opinion.
Before and After (1979)
Average TV Movie. Good cast.
I usually rate an average film 5/10, but Conchata Farrell's presence in the film gives it an extra star. Although not a bad film, the cheesy music and predictable dialogue don't help, as much as hinder. Patty plays a supposedly overweight (she was hardly that) woman, who is trying to cope with her weight and marriage struggles. I think this could have been an excellent telefilm if it wasn't so heavy handed--and a better script couldn't have hurt. You have almost everyone in the film telling Patty's character, Carole, she is overweight. I suppose this was done so the viewer would believe it. Well, not this viewer. Patty was too svelte, that even with some lame padding she barely looked 5-10 lbs. overweight. I know there was a good point to this film, but with all the other "stuff" the true meaning gets lost in it. Thankfully, Patty made some other fine films, this is more of a curiosity piece with a good cast.
The Mutilator (1984)
Warning! Warning! Do not believe the good reviews!!
Let me begin by saying, I love the "it's so bad it's good" genre, but this film is utter rubbish, a real chore to sit through. From the horrible dialogue to the atrocious acting There is nothing redeeming in this film. I watched this film on a recommendation, and also the reviews here on IMDb. I was sorely disappointed. So if you are a glutton for punishment (like I was).....go ahead watch this trash. But, you have been warned.
Dom Hemingway (2013)
A must for Jude Law fans.
I am a Jude Law fan, and I will admit that there are parts of the film that meandered and bored me. Also, some of the comedic touches barely made me laugh. But Jude Law is absolutely mesmerizing as Dom Hemingway. When he is on screen I just couldn't look away. Does the film have problems? Yes, this is a flawed film, however, because of Law's performance I have given this a 7/10. It might be a little too generous, but he made an otherwise distasteful picture quite palatable.
Multiple Maniacs (1970)
John Waters had to start somewhere I guess
I have been a John Waters fan since the 70's. I remember seeing this one in the early 80's and was not impressed with it then, but decided to watch it again recently. Well, the years haven't been kind to the film. I could barely get thru it. From the meandering screenplay, subpar acting and directionless direction--it's all an amateurish affair. Fortunately, John Waters (Divine & Mink Stole) got so much better with each film. I would say bypass this unless you are a die-hard Waters fan.
Beane's of Boston (1979)
Beyond awful...
This US version of the UK series "Are You Being Served?" is absolutely dreadful. Considering the cast (notably John Hillerman, Tom Poston, Charlotte Rae and Alan Sues) it should have been a lot better. No wonder this pilot was not picked up. Of course, you can judge for yourself as it's on Youtube, but better to avoid this and stick to the original British comedy.
She-Man: A Story of Fixation (1967)
There are better ways to spend an hour
Let me first say I LOVE many of Bob Clark's films, and that is the main reason I checked this one out. I also love cheesy movies (ie Robot Monster, Plan 9 From Outer Space, Glen or Glenda etc). But this film that comes in at 68 minutes, was dreadful. There are several other films of this genre that are much more entertaining. Avoid this one. You've been warned.
Wonder Woman: Balance of Power (2006)
Wow.....and not in a good way.
I'll start this by saying this is a fan-film, and not a theatrical film, so I wasn't expecting much. There are a few good and many bad things about it. Let's begin with the bad. I'm not going to give away the "plot", but suffice it to say there isn't much of one. The actors are one-dimensional, wooden and not very attractive. It had a very low-brow feel, overall very amateurish. It follows the basics of the DC comics, while trying to be original here and there. Now for the good. I liked the idea to cast an Asian actress (or is she Amerasian?), or any other ethnicity for that matter, after-all Wonder Woman is based on a fictional comic character and other than Diana being an "Amazon", there's not much there historically. But Michele Laurent, who was billed as Michelle O'Neill here is miscast. She's quite petite and she has one of those high pitched voices so popular these days. She's got a pretty face, but is she WW? Nope, not by a long stretch. For some reason, we all expect a tall, well built buxom or athletic woman. I mean c'mon she's an AMAZON! This film short comes in at 39 minutes....that somehow felt like 2 hours. My warning, ONLY watch this if you have to, otherwise by-pass this one. You have been forewarned.
Gable and Lombard (1976)
Although it's not a great film, it's definitely worth checking out.
This movie was quite maligned when it came out. Since I had been a big fan of both vivacious Jill Clayburgh and the manly James Brolin at the time I went to see it. Since I was a teen, I took a lot of what was portrayed as quite accurate. True it is a mostly fictionalized account of the two stars, but it has got some redeeming qualities. Namely, Brolin's dead on Gable. He is indeed very good, and I kept forgetting that it was not really Clark Gable. Clayburgh, as attractive as she is does not have Lombard's classic beauty or figure, but she's so gosh darn likable as Lombard one can overlook her shortcomings. Seeing it again recently, Jill Clayburgh as Lombard is a stretch, but I felt she put so much into the character, and a better script couldn't have hurt. Physical aspects aside, the two actors have great chemistry, and one gets the impression they are really crazy about each other. It's ashame that neither Brolin or Clayburgh got more to do...the story does meander at times and the film is a tad too long. Although it's not a great film, it's definitely worth checking out. Be on the lookout for Melanie Mayron as Dixie, before she went from frump to vixen.
Il vecchio testamento (1963)
Biblical "Epic"??
First off let me begin by saying I really love biblical epics from the US or abroad. But "The Old Testament is a dreadful movie. The movie is not what it appears to be. This film is hardly the Old Testament (one assumes in its entirety), but just a tiny segment. I could talk about the lousy cinematography, the editing, where the shots shift from day to night as each character is speaking, or the odd strained dialog and dubbing, but why bother? I'd never heard of this stinker before, and now I know why. Although it might have some biblical significance, I would have to say avoid this one at all costs. Stick to the "Ten Commandments". Trust me.
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)
50 feet and then some....
This film has to be one of my all time favorite bad movies. I used to watch it often as kid on New York City's WPIX Channel 11's Chiller Theater. The special effects(ha!) are dreadful, the dialog laughable, the acting non-existent, but I still loved it! Sultry knockout Allison Hayes wasn't a terrific actress, but she sure looked good! As a kid I remember thinking that her husband HARRY! was a big dope. Why would he want that pinch-faced blonde, when he had gorgeous, sexy and stacked Nancy to come home to every night? What a moron. Finally available on DVD after many years (Warner Bros. has distributed it but I was hoping for a better restoration--oh well)....it's still a pleasure to watch.
Night Gallery: Green Fingers/The Funeral/The Tune in Dan's Cafe (1972)
Everything she plants grows....
This is perhaps one of my most favorite of all the "Night Gallery" episodes. It was such a great series, too bad SciFi or another network hasn't picked it up. Besides the fact that I had always loved Elsa Lanchester, and found her oddly beautiful as the "Bride of Frankenstein" and other old films too, she really was a marvellous character actress, quite often overlooked. In this episode a very greedy land developer tries anyway he can to evict her from her little home. If I remember correctly (it's been ages since I saw this as a kid) the ending is quite shocking--well for the time anyway! I wish Universal would release the Night Gallery series on DVD.
Heartbeat (1946)
Definitely worth a viewing
This film, although not among Ginger Rogers best work, is certainly worth checking out. As usual she is most engaging--she plays a teen (she was actually 35) somewhat convincingly. She has run away from a girls reformatory and is recruited by Professor Aristide (Basil Rathbone), who runs a pickpocket academy in Paris. She is assigned a pickpocketing "job" by a corrupt ambassador (Adolph Menjou). Of course along the way she meets a man (Jean-Pierre Aumont), falls in love and well, you get the drift. The supporting cast is also entertaining most notably Adolph Menjou, although one doesn't see Basil Rathbone nearly enough here. At times the story is slow moving and quite predictable, but when Ginger is on the screen her beauty, charm and magnetism more than compensate for this. If you are a fan of Ginger Rogers, Adolph Menjou or Basil Rathbone this largely forgotten film is worth a look.
King Kong (2005)
King Kong is STILL King!!
I enjoyed this film, the CGI effects are amazing, very realistic--so many scenes in daylight give it a more authentic look. The cast, which I thought was perfect, did a good job. I have seen the IMDb BLOGGERS "reviews" calling this film everything from rubbish to preposterous. Those comments are ridiculous..a film is supposed to entertain, and this film delivers. My only complaint was the inclusion of several unnecessary and uninteresting characters. Perhaps a bit more editing couldn't have hurt. But the overall effect works.
