Persuasion (2022)
Str8 white male, loved it
I'm not a Jane Austen aficionado, or typically into this type of movie. But I've seen this movie twice now and I adore it. It's adorable, sentimental, hilarious, witty, and Dakota Johnson has never been better. (She's also classically gorgeous in this, which doesn't hurt). The movie makes me feel all the best feelings , and the plot is interesting and moving, while being gut wrenching in the best way possible. As I've been led to believe, its ending is similar to other Austen novels, so readers (viewers) get treated a nice romantic catharthis.
I give this movie 9 stars. To me, the mark of a good movie is one you want to watch again and again. I'm looking forward to my third viewing.
Ghosted (2023)
Worst movie I've ever enjoyed
Headline says it- although this movie was not good, I did not want to stop it. I enjoyed it. It was fun to watch, and Chris Evans and Ana de Armas are a good pairing. However, the scripted dialogue was hokey, with the plot being forced through in uncharacteristic exchanges. The cinematography has weird, unstandard shots sprinkled in which were neither arty nor useful. The acting was not great, including with Chris (Ana was great though). The film also really liked employing special effect a close ups that did not aid the movie in any way. I'm almost every regard, I could find flaws in this film-- but in enjoyability, I could not. It was an enjoyable ride. I will not watch it a second time- but I do not regret my first viewing.
Los Espookys (2018)
I watch this show with a permanent smile
Los espookys is a hilariously creative show. Every moment is oddball humor. I don't know who writes the dialogue, but I bet they're hilarious and fascinatingly bizarre IRL, because the humor is a dramatic departure from the norm of other comedies. Like, just now, I'm watching it, and a character walks I'm from the store, having bought ONLY carrots. Like, why 😂
When it was first announced and advertised, they made a big deal of Fred Armisen being in it, but he's literally the worst part of it (Not your fault Fred- it's just that the rest is so darn good!). The ensemble cast plays off each other very well, and it's just a non-stop laugh fest- and I can't stop smiling through the whole show.
Ted Lasso (2020)
Meets the hype
Like many others, I had heard overwhelming positive reviews from this show, but didn't quite believe it. Now, 6-7 episodes in, I'm an official convert. This show is so funny that I laugh out loud a dozen times per episode, but it's also serious at times, which is rarely done well in comedies, but just fits here. Every episode gets better and better. Follow the lemming herd and watch this.
Dune (2021)
Exceeded expectations
This movie was excellent. After seeing the 1980's version, I expected this to be similar, but modernized. Instead, they were able to really dive into the story by essentially cutting the narrative in half (a wrap-up sequel is forthcoming so I hear). As a result, it felt more real, more passionate, and more emotionally connected to audiences than the original.
I'd also like to say that when I first saw the casting for this, I objected to Timothy Chalamet, who I did not think was right for the role. I am happy to say I was mistaken, because he was excellent. However, the REAL star of the show was Rebecca Ferguson, who played Jessica Atreides, and was PHENOMENAL. This will hopefully turn her into a household name, and get her cast in more things, because she's an exquisite actress.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Who is giving this a positive rating?
This movie was dreadful. First, the character building: bad, stilted dialogue, deliveries so flat that they undercut all emotion, and unbelievable character arcs. Furthermore, the cinematography was perhaps meant to be edgy or cool but it was just annoying- lots of shots from weird, unnecessary angles. The music was wretched- they were going for a eerie feeel, but the constant whinny of the high pitched theramin just Made it so I HAD to mute the TV instead, so mission not accomplished. On top of all this bad, the plot made very little sense. It was straightforward enough that you could explain it in one sentence, but it was still so far from credible that no one should have green lit this. Now, after watching this movie, the primary emotions I'm left with is anger and betrayal.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
An 8.5?!?
This movie only has an 8.5 and by God that's robbery because it's the best crime movie of all time. The ending of this movie has become legend and for good reason. It's the greatest 5-man ensemble of any movie, and the non-linear storytelling is superb. You will never forget this film
Goodfellas (1990)
Good movie but certainly not perfect
This movie should not have such a high rating. It's certainly good and a worthwhile use of your time, but despite its strong start, the middle and end drags.
The Man from Earth (2007)
Diamond in the rough
This is a true hidden gem. It's interesting, thought provoking, and a slow burn drama that leaves your head swiveling at the end. It's a VERY dialogue heavy movie, which is not for everyone, but if you loved movies like 12 Angry Men, My Dinner with Andre, Glengarry Glenross, The Breakfast Club, The King's Speech, or others similar, then you'll appreciate this movie a lot. I can't believe so few people know about it. It's filmed on a shoestring budget, so probably didn't have much distribution or marketing, but it blew away my expectations.
The King's Speech (2010)
Best movie in years
As soon as I finished this movie I immediately thought it would win best picture and it did. Superb from first moment to last
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Funniest show on TV
I have always considered that the hallmark of a good comedy is that you can watch it multiple times and it stays funny. I can confirm, after a second watch through of the series, that it Does. Very good show
The King's Speech (2010)
Best movie in years
As soon as I finished this movie I immediately thought it would win best picture and it did. Superb from first moment to last
